SHALOM Dear Friends,

JCA BUILDING HOURS

It has been just over two years since I was blessed to assume the role of CEO of the JCA. Over the course of the past year, and all its challenges, the staff continues to amaze me with their creativity and dedication to the community. Although February is a shorter month, the JCA has a tremendous number of activities for you to enjoy. If you are looking for a fun evening, a way to support an outstanding organization, and don’t want to worry about formal attire, then adam CHASKIN our Getaway with the JCA Annual Fundraiser is the place you should be on February 27. This night promises to be a fun and entertaining virtual experience while raising necessary funds to support the programs of the JCA and help ensure they are available for all members of our community. I want to highlight some of what will be going on in our various departments this month. Previously, our Theatre Department won the prestigious B’nai Tzedek grant to allow the continuation of its all-important Holocaust education production, Just Like Me, with the performance scheduled for April 11. This is an incredible opportunity for our youth to learn from some of the Holocaust survivors still in our community. The kids of JCA Theatre are hard at work practicing for their performance of The Little Mermaid going live onstage next month! The J Institute has numerous programs this month, both in person and virtually, to afford all adults the opportunity to learn and grow. The JCA Young Concert Artists Series returns on February 14 with a performance by Xavier Foley. Thanks to the generosity of the Berman Family, these concerts bring top international talent to Jacksonville and remain free to the entire community. While summer is still months away, registration for JCA Summer Camp has begun! We have exciting new offerings this summer and have added a second location for camp at The Jacksonville Jewish Center. This will allow our campers to enjoy over thirty acres of campgrounds. We are also launching Camp Kaytana, a series of one week specialty camps for the camper looking to focus on a specific area for the week.

We started the season off with the first of three concerts in The Berman Family Young Artists Concert Series for 2021. January featured pianist Do-Hyun Kim who provided a journey that shifted through many moods and emotions as he explored the complex pieces by Mozart, Schumann and Stravinsky. Enrapturing his audience immediately, he played with great delicacy stroking the keys like a long-lost love. And as quickly as he lulled them in with his sublime sounds, he stomped heavy rhythms and hammered notes creating a dynamic change in atmosphere. Ending with the magical shifts of Stravinsky’s Three Movements from “Petrushka,” his last piece took us through a volatile and thrilling conclusion. But that was not the end! Mr. Kim returned for an encore that was as gentle as the opening bringing his performance full circle.

Jonathan Swensen, Cellist Sun, Mar 14 | 3 pm Jonathan Swensen first fell in love with the cello upon hearing the Elgar Concerto at the age of six and ultimately made his concerto debut at the age of twenty performing that very piece with Portugal’s Orquestra Sinfónica do Porto Casa da Música conducted by his father, Joseph Swensen. Mr. Swensen has captured First Prizes at the 2018 Young Concert Artists International Auditions, 2018 Khachaturian International Cello Competition, and 2019 Windsor International String Competition. In his native Denmark, he was recipient of the Jacob Gades Scholarship in 2019, the Léonie Sonning Talent Prize in 2017, and First Prize at the 2016 Danish String Competition. A graduate of the Royal Danish Academy of Music, Jonathan Swensen currently studies with Professor Torleif Thedéen at the Norwegian Academy of Music in Oslo. YOUTH SERVICES

Whisk-y Business – Kids in the Kitchen By Amanda Collins, Youth Services Director

“One of the secrets, and pleasures, of cooking is to learn to correct something if it goes awry; and one of the lessons is to grin and bear it if it cannot be fixed.” - Julia Child In cooking, as with life, there are no mistakes. When a recipe goes wrong, one simply does their best to balance the flavors, salvage the dish and enjoy the outcome as much as possible. Beyond teaching chefs to be flexible and creative, cooking helps individuals hone their fine motor skills and develop a valuable life skillset. In Youth Services, we take pride in providing a variety of cooking classes catering to your own Julia Child or little Guy Fieri. From Easy Cheesy to Film Foodies to Dip, Dip, Hooray, the JCA is bound to have a cooking class for even the toughest food critics. As they say in Ratatouille, “Anyone can cook!”

JEWISH EDUCATION Purim Mitzvot

By Rachel Sandler, Jewish Educator Did you know that there are four mitzvot, commandments, for Purim? Purim is the story from the Book of Esther about the evil Haman and his plot to destroy all the Jews until Esther and Mordechai stop his plan. One mitzvah is hearing the story of Purim, the Megillah, and making noise with groggers when Haman’s name is read aloud. Another mitzvah is to give gifts to friends and neighbors which is called mishloach manot. This usually includes two different types of food in a basket. The third mitzvah is eating a special meal named seudah. The last mitzvah is to give to the needy called matanot l’evyonim. This honors Esther and Mordechai in their saving of the Jewish people. To fulfill this mitzvah, a donation of money, clothing or food can be made. Purim starts at sundown on February 25 and ends at sundown on February 26, so during this time you and your family can try to perform one of more of these mitzvot.

Revamped Tot Shabbat By Danielle Wirsansky

The Tot Shabbat is a staple of any Jewish preschool and Michele Block Gan Yeladim Preschool & Kindergarten has long offered the program. But starting in 2021, Tot Shabbat will take on a new format and style. The course will be offered monthly and virtually, and each class will be focused on a specific Jewish Holiday. January was Tu B’shevat, while February is focused on Purim and March on Passover. Participants will learn about and do a craft or activity tied to the holiday. Supply lists will be sent out in advance so that families can have their supplies ready to go at home for the course. Tot Shabbat will also now be led by family favorite instructor, Renée Schreck. Prior to marriage and raising three children, Renée Schreck enjoyed working as a school psychologist, teacher, and Exceptional Student Education specialist. She holds several current Florida certifications and considers herself a lifelong learner. For the past 20 years, Renée has had the good fortune to facilitate various preschool enrichment classes, including Sensory Sensations in Gan Yeladim’s Parent & Me program, as well as those based on cooking and art. Renée and her husband have travelled extensively, and her interests include cooking, shopping, reading and live theatre. Participation in Tot Shabbat is free and open to the community as part of Gan Yeladim’s Parent & Me Program. info@jcajax.org

RICK SAMPLE Five-time record holding powerlifter, Rick Samples, trained for the Florida State Powerlifting Championship (2017) while a member of the JCA. “There is sufficient equipment to squat, bench press and deadlift heavily and safely,” not to mention “super effective tools such as bands, chains, a safety squat bar and a hex deadlift bar that are used by competitive strength athletes everywhere.” Rick has been competing since 1985. His best lifts at a single competition were: 600lb Squat, 507lb Bench, and 600lb Deadlift at the AAPF Southern States Meet (Equipped). Rick first became a member after his neighbor, Fitness Director Eiffel Gilyana, invited him to check out the JCA. “I was impressed by the spotless facility and variety of programs for the family.” Rick especially enjoys sharing his love of strength training with his children and has regular father-daughter training sessions at the JCA. “Strength training with your children is one of the best ways to build healthy habits, create a common bond and make great memories. I have trained my sons as well and, even though they are grown, we still train together when schedules permit.” Through the years, to maintain his impressive strength, Rick has had to dedicate himself to a vigorous training routine, sacrificing social activities and even overcoming a shoulder surgery in 2008. While not everyone needs to become a powerlifter, Rick suggests everyone incorporate resistance training in their fitness routine. “So many studies have shown that strength training is beneficial to people of every age. Even the elderly can build muscle mass. Honestly, there are no down sides.” For those that don’t enjoy strength training, Rick suggests experimenting with training styles. “There are so many ways to incorporate strength training into your fitness lifestyle. One size does not fit all.” But for those interested in powerlifting, Rick shares his best advice: “Technique, technique, technique. Focus on technical perfection before trying to add a lot of weight on the bar. The strength gains will come once a firm foundation is built. There is a lot that goes into meet preparation. I would love to talk to anyone with competitive aspirations.”

JCA Swim Team and Swim Lessons; Doing It Safely! By Josie Martin, Aquatics Manager

We, at the JCA, have found a way to safely hold swim team practice and swim lessons during COVID. We have had a successful few months with the swimmers refining their strokes and getting ready for the future. We prepare all swimmers to be able to transition to the Makos Summer Swim Team if they wish to do so. For the swim team, the swimmers swim one length of the pool in one lane and return in another lane. They then exit the pool and stand on designated areas 6 feet apart from each other. All of our Red Cross trained coaches and swim instructors wear masks during the practices and swim lessons; they also disinfect all equipment after each use. We are learning to adapt to the “new norm”; the swimmers are learning a lot during this time. Go Makos! For more information on swim team or swim lessons, contact Josie at ext. 240, or at Josie.martin@jcajax.org.

TENNIS TENNIS: A SPORT FOR LIFE

By Aline Berkenbrock, Tennis Professional Helping your child find the perfect sport can be tough. You want something active, socially engaging and with low risk of injuries. Tennis is an excellent sport for young athletes, and it is a lot more than just fun time on the court. There are physical as well as mental, emotional and social benefits of playing tennis. Growing up playing tennis can help your child grow in numerous ways. Tennis teaches respect, fair play, discipline and mental toughness. Physically, it teaches hand-eye coordination, balance, agility, speed, strength and much more.  Perhaps the biggest benefit of it all, is that tennis is a lifelong sport. Thanks to the low-impact and noncontact nature of the game, tennis carries a low risk of injury and offers unique opportunities to continue working on skill mastery until an advanced age.  Give your child the present of a sport that can be played for life!
