Israel’s National Days

MON, APR 17 - TUE, APR 18, 2023
This somber day commemorates the approximately six million Jewish people who were murdered in the Holocaust and the Jewish resistance that occurred at that time. Jewish communities hold ceremonies that include speeches by Holocaust survivors or their descendants, lighting memorial candles and the Mourner’s Kaddish prayer. There is a siren that is heard across Israel at 10 am on Yom Ha’Shoah.
The siren calls for Israelis to be still and stop everything they are doing to observe two minutes of solemn reflection on Yom Ha’Shoah.
MEMORIAL DAY FOR THE FALLEN SOLDIERS AND VICTIMS OF TERRORISM
MON, APR 24 - TUE, APR 25, 2023
Yom Ha’Zikaron opens at 8 pm with a siren that lasts for one minute. The siren calls Israelis to stop everything and stand in silence to respectfully commemorate the fallen. All places of entertainment in Israel are closed on the evening of Yom Ha’Zikaron.
Regular television programs cease for the day so the names of every soldier who died for Israel can be displayed. The next day, on the day of Yom Ha’Zikaron, a two-minute siren is sounded at 11 am. The second siren begins all official memorial ceremonies and gatherings at cemeteries in Israel.
TUE, APR, 25 - WED APR 26, 2023
As Yom Ha’Zikaron ends, Yom Ha’Atzmaut begins with an official ceremony held for Israel’s Independence Day on Mount Herzl.
The Yom Ha’Atzmaut ceremony includes a speech by the speaker of the Knesset (Israeli Parliament), performances by artists and Israeli soldiers who march in unison to form elaborate structures like menorahs or Magen David (Star of David). There is a ceremonial lighting of twelve torches - one torch for each of the Tribes of Israel. Streets are closed to cars, so people can sing and dance in the streets. The next day, families have picnics or a barbeque in the park to continue the Yom Ha’Atzmaut festivities.
