Ephesians 1:11

In Christ we have also obtained an inheritance, having been destined according to the purpose of him who accomplishes all things according to his counsel and will

Ordered The world may seem like it is in turmoil. Still, one thing is for certain: God is not. God is not a God of confusion but of deficiency and order. Out of the chaos that was the beginning, God created order. God juxtaposed the dry land and the water, day and night, out of nothingness, and God has already set the beginning and the end. Nothing we are experiencing at any moment surprises God--to us, yes, but to God, never. Over the past few years, world events have pushed us to new levels emotionally, physically, intellectually, politically, socially, and spiritually and forced us to pause and consider what is truly important in life –deepening our relationship with God. This will help us to remain focused and ordered in our daily lives. The world has always been challenging, yet, as God’s children, we have the blessed assurance that we serve a God who has already ordered hope, peace, joy, and love through the advent ("the coming") of Jesus Christ, the Incarnate. May your focus this Advent season be on how Christ came so that you might experience the fullness of all that God has already ordained for your life. Pray: God, help me this Advent season to remain focused on experiencing the fullness of all God has for me. Rev. Dr. Susan H. Ephesians 6:10-17 10

Finally, be strong in the Lord and in the strength of his power; 11 put on the whole armor of God, so that you may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil, 12 for our struggle is not against blood and flesh but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the cosmic powers of this present darkness, against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly places. 13 Therefore take up the whole armor of God, so that you may be able to withstand on the evil day and, having prevailed against everything, to stand firm. 14 Stand, therefore, and belt your waist with truth and put on the breastplate of righteousness 15 and lace up your sandals in preparation for the gospel of peace. 16 With all of these, take the shield of faith, with which you will be able to quench all the flaming arrows of the evil one. 17 Take the helmet of salvation and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God.

Still Standing This text, credited to the Apostle Paul, was written to a church composed of Jewish and Gentile Christians. The Church at Ephesus faced many challenges as a 1st-century community. They had to grow in grace as they grew in number, to be united and not uniform, and to remain resistant to the Roman empire. Employing the language of a military strategist, the author challenged the audience to stand against impossible odds. While the armor described is metaphorical, their mess is real. While the spiritual forces they faced were unseen, they had real-world consequences. Similarly, today, we often face odds that seem unimaginable and face overt and covert powers that often go unnamed and unchecked. The good news in our text is that we can stand strong because the Lord makes us strong. The good news of Advent is that Jesus’ arrival equips us with real-time strategies for an eternal battle with earthly implications. Every unseen power will be subject to our mighty God. Every principality hell-bent on violence will bow to the Prince of Peace. Every ruler then and now pales in comparison to the power of the One who came and is coming again. So stand strong, brothers and sisters, and know that as we stand, God’s promise still stands. Pray: God, help me to stand strong during the Advent season. Rev. Romans 15:13

May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace in believing, so that you may abound in hope by the power of the Holy Spirit.

First Sunday of Advent: Hope Filled Recently, I took the Enneagram personality test. My primary personality type is a One, and in a nutshell, Ones are defined by their belief that everything must be in order and by their feeling that they must always be “right.” At their core, Ones are the “model children” of the Enneagram world - dutiful, responsible, and perfection-seeking. In Biblical times, the religious leaders felt they were always right as they tried to trip Jesus up. The Jewish people felt superior to the Gentiles. However, Jesus was for everyone, and Paul, the author of Romans, taught the Gospel of Jesus Christ. Romans 15:13 comes at the end of a passage where he shares that the Gospel is for Jews and Gentiles alike. It does not matter who we are, what we’ve done, or where we have been. The Good News is available if we choose to receive it. Regardless of our personality type or spiritual gifts, we all have value in Jesus Christ. Just as your Enneagram results depict opportunities for development and growth, our life in Christ depicts the fruit of the Spirit, where the hope of God will fill you with joy and peace in believing so that you may abound in all hope with the power of the Holy Spirit. We are all a work in progress, so keep your hope as you pursue your dream anchored in the Lord. Pray: God, I may not be where I want to be, but praise God, I am not where I used to be. As I strive to be more like your Son Jesus, I can say it is well with my soul. Rev. Joy Wilkerson Yancy St. John AME Church Memphis, Tennessee joylynn0895@gmail.com www.stjohnamememphis.org

John 16:33

I have said this to you so that in me you may have peace. In the world you face persecution, but take courage: I have conquered the world!”

Take Heart The world is filled with trouble. I dread turning on the evening news because many of the stories are negative. There are numerous stories of violence, from shooting, robberies, and beatings. We hear and read about natural calamities taking lives and destroying property. The world news often ends with a feel -good piece, and the local news, at least weekly, incorporates a “pass it on” story where someone initiates surprising someone in need with a tangible gift of kindness. These stories warm the heart but unfortunately occur infrequently, or at least they are shared infrequently. Culture seems to prefer bad news over good. Jesus told us there would be trouble in the world, but he quickly reminded us to take heart because he had overcome the world. Other translations of this verse say, “Be of good cheer.” This means to be in good spirits. Despite the gloom we witness in the world, take Jesus at his Word – “take heart” that he has conquered the world far and far between. Jesus is not a human, so he would not lie, so believe what he says. He told us these things so that we would have peace. Do you desire peace? Take Jesus to heart and believe what he says. Jesus said, “Until now you have not asked for anything in my name. Ask and you will receive, so that your joy may be complete.” (John 16:24) Ask for peace, and you will receive it in abundance and have abundant joy. Pray: Creator God, Thank you for showing me the invisible. Thank you for your patience in waiting for it to come to fruition. Give me the strength to walk in your will and your way while I wait. Isaiah 40:31

But those who wait for the Lord shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings like eagles; they shall run and not be weary; they shall walk and not faint.

Hope in the Lord Isaiah 40:31 is one of my favorite scriptures. It probably is my favorite Old Testament verse, while Philippians 4:6-7 are my favorite verses in the New Testament. I do not remember when I latched on to Isaiah 40:31, but in my season of singleness, I was partial to translations that said, “those who wait.” I encouraged myself to wait on the Lord. A friend with the gift of intercessory prayer prayed this verse for and with me at a women’s retreat. As she proclaimed the scripture verbally, I danced the scripture physically. I knew I was not waiting idle but that God was preparing me for something I could not handle right then. Other translations of Isaiah 40:31 use “trust,” and as I trusted the Lord and did not lean to my own understanding, He directed my path. When I began to get weary, the Lord renewed my strength to run on a little while longer. Now, I have a new outlook for the future as a wife, a pastor, and the number of other roles God sees fit to place me in. God is Sovereign, and God can and will do what God wants when God wants and how God wants. Place your hope in God and get ready to soar. Pray: God, keep me hopeful when the world around me appears hopeless. You, God, are the source of all hope, so I cling to you. Lamentations 3:24-25 24

“The Lord is my portion,” says my soul, “therefore I will hope in him.” The Lord is good to those who wait for him, to the soul that seeks him. .

25

My Portion Lamentations 3:24-25 adorns the wall of our downstairs half bath. When I am experiencing challenging moments, I often find myself standing in the bathroom meditating over this scripture. “The Lord is my portion” reminds me of “our daily bread” from the Lord’s prayer. He provides enough of what I need each day. There is no need to worry when I hope in him. The Lord is good to those who wait for him. Another word for wait is trust. As I trust the Lord and seek him with all my heart, I know everything will be alright. The Hebrew word for portion relates to an interest in the favor and love of God, an inheritance. When we are in the presence of the Lord, our hearts let us know that everything will be alright, and that is the best inheritance. We have everything we need to balance our troubles and make up for our losses. Inheritances on earth are empty and perishable; God is an all-sufficient and durable portion. Therefore, I will hope in God. What about you? Pray: Lord, help me seek you in all I do today. Psalm 33:18

Truly the eye of the Lord is on those who fear him, on those who hope in his steadfast love,

Releasing Hope In Greek Mythology, Pandora was given a jar with all of the misery and evils of the world trapped inside of it. One day, she opened the jar, and all of the misery and evils escaped into the world, yet upon closing the jar, hope was contained. The classical analysis of this myth suggests that hope was saved. However, in light of this Advent season, I declare that hope does us no good trapped inside of a jar, rather, it is most impacting when it is released into the world. Jesus’ coming is this very release of hope into a world filled with misery and evil. “For he shall be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace,” and his coming shall manifest God's steadfast love. Jesus–Emmanual–manifests God’s love for each of us. That same love is what we must share daily with others who may be feeling like all hope is lost. Hope is not something we capture or hide or harbor, but rather, it is what we release into the world that needs to know that there is always hope. Pray: God, help me to be a godly manifestation of hope to someone today. Reverend Dr. Susan H. Buckson Allen Temple AME Church Atlanta, Georgia susanhillaryllc@gmail.com www.susanhillaryllc.com

Job 24:8-10 8

For what is the hope of the godless when God cuts them off, when God takes away their lives? 9 Will God hear their cry when trouble comes upon them? 10 Will they take delight in the Almighty? Will they call upon God at all times?

I Hope Not We often say “I hope not” to indicate that we really do not want something to happen. It is a declaration that whatever is pending is something that we do not want to confront and that may make us feel uncomfortable. Often, the confrontation is not with others, but it requires us to have to do some internal work. Do you see yourself as unloveable? I hope not. Are you holding onto unforgiveness? I hope not. Do you refuse to make amends for your wrong? I hope not. Have you spoken ill of someone? I hope not. Have you been minimizing your time with God? I hope not. Do you see yourself as helpless? I hope not. Do you think God does not hear you? I hope not If neither of these questions resonates with you, I do hope that you examine yourself today to see and embrace every circumstance as an opportunity to come to know about the goodness of God. Pray: God, help me put my hope in you no matter the circumstance. Reverend Dr. Susan H. Job 17:1-2, 13-15 1

“My spirit is broken; my days are extinct; the grave is ready for me. Surely there are mockers around me, and my eye dwells on their provocation.… 13 If I look for Sheol as my house, if I spread my couch in darkness, 14 if I say to the Pit, ‘You are my father,’ and to the worm, ‘My mother’ or ‘My sister,’ 15 where then is my hope? Who will see my hope? 2

Who Sees Your Hope? Job, among many, has a reason to ask, “Why?” Surely, after losing his family and his wealth and his health and enduring the mocking of his friends and his wife, Job had a reason, as many would, to give up and give in to the reasonable tendency to “curse God and die.” (At least that was his wife’s advice. Remember, she lost as Job lost). Job admits that his “spirit is broken,” and he is aware of his mockers’ provocation; however, Job knows that just as his eyes dwell on them, so do their eyes dwell on him. They are watching to see if the man from Uz, who “was blameless and upright, one who feared God and turned away from evil” (Job 1:1), would lose hope. Job does not, for he understands that to do so would demonstrate that his trust and praise of God was conditional. Job’s story teaches us that hope is not conditional. We do not lose it. It is a constant reminder that, like Job, we must demonstrate hope in God and pray for those who do not. (Job 42:10) Who needs to see your hope today? Pray: God, help me to remain constant in the hope. Reverend Dr. Susan H. Buckson Allen Temple AME Church Atlanta, Georgia pastor.allentempleatlanta@gmail.com www.allentempleatlanta.org

1 John 5:3-5 3

4

For the love of God is this, that we obey his commandments. And his commandments are not burdensome, for whatever is born of God conquers the world. And this is the victory that conquers the world, our faith. 5 Who is it who conquers the world but the one who believes that Jesus is the Son of God?

Second Sunday of Advent: Striving for Peace Too often, we turn on the television and see that across the world, men and women and boys and girls are involved in situations that are truly less than peaceful. Though many countries go to war, here in the United States, we do not witness the daily dropping of bombs. Certainly, we have had our share of conflicts on U.S. soil, yet as in other countries, we do not drive and walk looking for physical land mines and fearful of military combat. We pray for our men and women who fight for us, but the question this week, as we reflect on peace, is: How do we handle the internal and socio-economic wars and conflicts in the everyday situations in our own lives? Being “at peace” has never meant living without challenges. The mere fact that we strive for peace of mind is because we deal with challenges in our daily living. We must simply trust that if we put our faith in God and work toward what is pleasing unto God, we will find peace in the midst of it all. Pray: God, help me to focus on peace no matter what I face today. Reverend Dr. Susan H. Matthew 10:34

“Do not think that I have come to bring peace to the earth; I have not come to bring peace but a sword.”

The Battle for Peace Finding peace through the battles of life requires a shift in perspective. Wars within ourselves—against doubt, fear, and inner turmoil—can serve as crucibles for the forging of enduring serenity. As a blacksmith tempers steel in the fire, adversity refines the soul. In the struggle, we unearth resilience, and through the storms, we discover the anchor of peace. Today, practice embracing challenges not as adversaries to our peace but as transformative agents sculpting the contours of your character. Seek the stillness within and let it be a sanctuary that transcends external trials so that we emerge victorious. Pray: God, help me to appreciate challenges as character building opportunities. The people who walked in darkness have seen a great light; those who lived in a land of deep darkness— on them light has shined. 3 You have multiplied exultation; you have increased its joy; they rejoice before you as with joy at the harvest, as people exult when dividing plunder. 6 For a child has been born for us, a son given to us; authority rests upon his shoulders, and he is named Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace. 7 Great will be his authority, and there shall be endless peace for the throne of David and his kingdom. The true light, which enlightens everyone, was coming into the world. 10 He was in the world, and the world came into being through him, yet the world did not know him. 11 He came to what was his own, and his own people did not accept him. 12 But to all who received him, who believed in his name, he gave power to become children of God, 13 who were born, not of blood or of the will of the flesh or of the will of man, but of God. 14 And the Word became flesh and lived among us, and we have seen his glory, the glory as of a father’s only son, full of grace and truth.

The arrival of Jesus transcends the temporal; it heralds a cosmic shift, a bridge between the divine and human. As we stand at the threshold of this sacred moment, let our hearts echo with the magnitude of this truth—a Redeemer born to reconcile, a King in the humblest form. May the miracle of Christ's arrival resound through our lives, shaping our actions, inspiring our love, and illuminating the path to eternal hope. In this season of celebration, let us embrace the joyous proclamation—Jesus has arrived, and with Him, a world forever changed. Pray: God, thank you for miracles that transform lives. John 10:10

The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy. I came that they may have life and have it abundantly.

Live Again Take a moment to read the narrative commonly referred to as The Valley of Dry Bones, penned in Ezekiel 37. As the prophet stands amidst dry bones. In response, a miraculous breath infuses the bones with vitality, and a vast army rises. This narrative mirrors our spiritual journeys. When life feels desolate, God's breath—God’s Spirit—brings renewal. In Christ, we discover resurrection and the promise of abundant life. Speak life into the areas that seem barren, trusting in the divine breath that transforms desolation into a vibrant, purpose-filled existence.
