Fully Engaged and STEM-Powered Girls pursue their interest in science through a wide array of STEM courses and extracurricular activities.
When Dan Barton began teaching industrial technology and engineering (ITE) at Burroughs in 1982, girls generally took home economics and boys took shop. That soon changed, and he’s been encouraging girls’ participation in ITE ever since, from robotics to the Super-Mileage Vehicle Club. When he founded SMVC in 2008, only three students on a team of 20 were girls. “Now, it’s 50 percent female, and of our four leaders this year, three of them are female,” Barton says. During SMVC’s April trip to California for its fourth Shell EcoMarathon, event organizers took notice of that. Given the event’s initiative to get more women involved in STEM fields, organizers were intrigued by the @JBSGirlsofSTEM Facebook page, managed by co-president Hallie Williams ’20. Shell featured the Burroughs team in their 2019 marketing campaign, interviewing co-president Chloe Sowers ’19 in a “Shell Women in STEM” segment. “Gender doesn’t seem to be a barrier to participation and achievement in STEM at Burroughs,” says physics teacher and STEM coordinator Martha Keeley. She and Computer Science chair Martha McMahon unearthed
