A Poem
Dear lovely Death
That taketh all things under wing — Never to kill —
Only to change Into some other thing
This suffering flesh, To make it either more or less, But not again the same — Dear lovely Death, Change is thy other name.
— Langston Hughes, 1931

DAVID A. HORNER '38 died August 12, 2022.
Mr. Horner attended Washington University in St. Louis for two years before transferring to the University of Illinois to study agricultural engineering. He received the Bronze Tablet Award for being in the top 1% of his senior class before his education was interrupted by World War II. He enlisted in an intensive training program
in meteorology in February 1943 and served as a forecaster in the Army Air Corps, the precursor to the Air Force. In 1947, he finished his degree in agricultural engineering at the University of Missouri-Columbia.
After exiting the military, Mr. Horner and his wife, Winifred Bryan Horner, began purchasing farmland in Boone County, Missouri. They ultimately assembled more than 800 acres, which Mr. Horner worked until the age of 98. Like many other farmers in the area, he needed more profitable employment, so he also held a job with the National Weather Service between 1954 and 1981, and served as the chief meteorologist at the Columbia airport.
When the Horners moved to Boone County, students in grades 1 through 8 were taught by a single teacher in a one-room schoolhouse. The Horners dedicated themselves to advancing the case for consolidation to improve the quality of education in rural communities and the first integrated school in Missouri, New Haven R2 Elementary. Mr. Horner served as Boone County commissioner in the 1980s, and on October 22, 2021, was inducted into the Boone County Historical Society's Hall of Fame. He was a civic leader and civil servant.
We offer our condolences to his family. Many loved ones preceded him in death, including his brother, RICHARD W. HORNER '32.

MARY JANE GRAY '41 died January 23, 2022.
Dr. Gray attended Swarthmore College, Washington University Medical School, and Columbia University before arriving in Burlington, Vermont,

in 1960 to practice obstetrics and gynecology, and teach at the UVM Medical School. She was one of the very few women practicing in her field at that time, and this in part led her in 1965 to become one of the founders of Planned Parenthood of Vermont.
In 1963, she married Thomas Bassett and took on, loved, and raised four teenaged children whose mother had died suddenly four years before. She brought her own family member, a tall and gracious black standard poodle named Mitzi. For many years, she balanced the care and tending of the family, house, and gardens with a full obstetrical practice, a full-time teaching load, and research. She also joined the Burlington Friends Meeting, which met in the barn behind their house, and often hosted guests for lunch after Quaker meeting on Sundays.
In 1979, the marriage ended, and she left Vermont to become head of Women's Health Services at the University of North Carolina in Chapel Hill. Upon retirement she moved to Oregon, continuing to volunteer at women's health clinics in Portland and Corvallis. She joined the Corvallis Friends Meeting and became close to many.
We offer our condolences to Dr. Gray's surviving stepchildren, as well as her nieces and nephews, in particular past Burroughs parents David Danforth and his wife, Tina. She was preceded in death by two stepchildren and her sister, ELIZABETH GRAY DANFORTH '46.

Mr. Weitzer lived a full, rich life, with many trips to Mexico and Europe. He celebrated Thanksgiving with his college friends every year from 1948 up to his death. Reading, gardening, music, and singing rounds were passions, but most of all he was a master woodcrafter to the very end of his life.
After Christine's death, Mr. Weitzer married Dava Johnson in February 1999, and they continued a life of adventure together.

DONALD R. EARLY '66 died August 27, 2022.

Dr. Early attended Rice University and the University of Missouri, where he earned a veterinary degree. He practiced veterinary medicine for over 40 years and owned Westgate Animal Hospital in Ellisville for over 35 years. There, he earned a reputation as a gentle and compassionate doctor of many beloved creatures. He specialized in cats, dogs, and horses, and those who entered his clinic appreciated his confident way with animals. He put animals and their owners at ease, but occasionally confessed he preferred the animals. His love of horses extended to an occasional trip with his wife, Linda, to the racetracks. A dedicated fan of all St. Louis sports, especially the Cardinals, he grew up admiring Stan Musial and modeling his center field skills after Curt Flood. He coached Little League and helped organize countless wrestling meets. But no sport so captured his attention as his own sons' achievements, and as adults, his growing pride in them and in their families. He was adored by his two granddaughters, Amelia and Juliana Early, who knew him as “Doc.”
Dr. Early's quirky, dry sense of humor endeared him to all who were fortunate enough to spend time with him, and love of family remained a central facet of his life.
We offer our condolences to his wife of 38 years, Linda; his sons, William and Andrew; his brother DAVID EARLY '71; and many cousins. Dr. Early was preceded in death by his brother Billy.

Planned Giving
How to make an impactful gift to Burroughs, preserve assets for loved ones, and join the John Burroughs Society
Consider Making Burroughs a Beneficiary of Your Retirement Plan Assets
A gift in your estate plan is a flexible way to extend your support for Burroughs into the future. Retirement plans, IRAs, life insurance, donor-advised funds, and commercial annuities are not affected by a will. These accounts are dispersed according to beneficiary designations, making them simpler ways to leave a legacy at Burroughs.
Making Burroughs the beneficiary of your retirement plan assets, IRA, life insurance, or commercial annuities is easy:
• Contact the institution that manages the asset and request a change-ofbeneficiary form (most are accessible online).
• Decide the percentage of the value of the asset you would like Burroughs to receive (1%-100%).
• Name John Burroughs School as the beneficiary.
• Return the form as directed by the institution.
• Notify Burroughs so we can claim the asset at the appropriate time.
Including Burroughs as a beneficiary of one or more of your retirement plan assets may also have tax advantages. For example, if you have a $200,000 IRA at your death, naming JBS as the beneficiary for 100% means Burroughs would receive the entire $200,000. By comparison, if you choose an individual as the beneficiary, a sizable amount will be subject to substantial income taxes under current IRS rules.
Questions?
Let us know if you have any questions about making a gift from your estate. If you have already taken steps to do so, we would love the opportunity to thank you and include you among the members of the John Burroughs Society. It is possible to include Burroughs among your beneficiaries and maintain your privacy and all preferences regarding anonymity will be respected.
Additional resources are available online at jburroughs.org/giving. Please contact Ginger Imster at (314) 993/4045, ext. 256 or gimster@jburroughs.org
John Burroughs Society

Those who include Burroughs in their wills, trusts, or other estate planning programs are members of the John Burroughs Society.
Since its founding, the Society has grown to more than 200 members who have made a lasting impact by collectively donating over $14.3 million to the school. Whether it's in memory of a teacher who changed the way they think about the world, a coach who taught them the value of teamwork and leadership, or a classmate they'll never forget — members preserve the best of Burroughs for future generations.
MEMBERSHIP
We invite you to become a member of the John Burroughs Society. There is no minimum gift amount required for membership. Lifetime membership is extended to individuals who make one or more of the following commitments to the school:
• Include Burroughs in their estate plans
• Create a charitable life-income arrangement to benefit the school
• Name JBS as a beneficiary of retirement assets or life insurance
• Donate a personal residence or a vacation home to Burroughs
For more information, visit www.jburroughs.org/giving.
To join, contact Amy Greenwood Dunaway '92 at (314) 993/4045, ext. 315 or adunaway@jburroughs.org, or Ginger Imster at (314) 993/4045, ext. 256 or gimster@jburroughs.org.
