The Gift of Madalyn Goff’s Luminous Art Gilded Whispers
Story: Lauren Loeb Ungar
Photography: Hessel Photography
Location: Palette, Covington
For Louisiana artist Madalyn Goff, art is more than color and texture—it is worship, healing, and the language of light. Working primarily in acrylics, epoxy, gold leaf, and texture compounds, Goff transforms each canvas into a living surface that shimmers, shifts, and breathes emotion. Her pieces are alive, meant not just to be seen, but felt—evoking peace, joy, and reverence in those who stand before them.
“I refer to my creations as the jewelry in the room,” Goff explains. “They sparkle and change throughout the day, catching the light differently at every hour. They come alive.”
Art has been part of Goff’s life since childhood. Her mother, Marilyn Cothren, was a print artist and watercolorist who instilled in her the importance of creativity. “I grew up watching her paint and show her work in galleries,” Madalyn recalls. “She taught me early on that art is an extension of life itself.”
From the time she could hold a brush, Goff found herself exploring that expression and giving art as gifts, as she instinctively used creativity as a way to connect with others. “As children, we are all artists,” she says. “Unfortunately, we learn the ‘rules
of art’ and start deciding whether we’re good enough. I never wanted to lose that childlike freedom.” And she did not.
THE PROCESS: WORSHIP THROUGH CREATION
For Goff, creating art is a spiritual act. She approaches each piece as a form of worship and meditation, painting while listening to Life Songs Radio and praying over her pieces. Many of her commissions are deeply personal collaborations with her clients. Some of which have been collaborations with families who want to honor a loved one, capture a milestone, or bring healing to a moment of loss.
“I’ve painted heartbeats for babies who didn’t survive the womb, memorials for beloved pets, and portraits of brides trying on their wedding dresses,” she shares. “Each piece tells a sacred story. I consider it a privilege to help people hold on to beauty in difficult times.”
Her canvases hold layers of emotion as rich as the physical materials themselves— texture and metallic leaf reflecting light like memory, faith, and hope made tangible.
STYLE AND SPIRIT
While her works are sometimes inspired by realism, Goff’s true signature lies in her
whimsical, luminous style. Her paintings seem to shimmer between worlds, not quite abstract, not quite representational, with a sense of wonder that shifts with the changing light.
“I rarely create strict realism,” she explains. “I like my pieces to feel alive, different at every glance. The textures and metallics allow that transformation. They mirror life; always changing, always surprising.”
And, the subjects she is commissioned to interpret are as diverse as her own imagination: portraits of cultural icons like Lil Wayne, Biggie Smalls, and Post Malone. Then, in the same breath, paintings of serene landscapes where lovers were proposed to and abstract works born purely of emotion. Each one reflects her openness to inspiration and collaboration.
“I’m constantly discovering myself through my work,” she says. “Each commission pushes me to paint something I might never have dreamt of, and that’s the gift of art. It keeps revealing who you are.”
ART AS A VESSEL FOR JOY
Beyond her studio, Goff’s art is also a ministry of joy. She serves as an art therapy instructor with the St. Tammany Foundation, teaching monthly sessions at a local cancer
center. For many patients, these classes are a highlight amid the challenges of treatment.
“One woman told me she used to dread coming to the cancer center,” Goff recalls. “After joining our art sessions, she said she now looks forward to it. That’s the power of creativity, it changes how we see the world.”
Her artwork has been featured in multiple publications, displayed in both St. Tammany and Ochsner hospitals, and continues to reach audiences far beyond her Louisiana home. But for Goff, the greatest reward is the quiet moment when someone connects with her work—when they feel seen.
A REFLECTION OF LIGHT
When asked what she hopes people feel when viewing her art, Goff’s answer is simple yet profound: “Peace. Happiness. Reverence. I want my art to remind people that they are seen and heard, even on their worst days.”
Her paintings radiate that intention, each one vibrant yet gentle, spiritual yet grounded. Whether through the glint of gold leaf or the subtle shift of texture, each piece seems to whisper a message of renewal.
Through every brushstroke, Madalyn Goff channels both faith and feeling, creating art that heals, honors, and celebrates the beauty in every story.
Editor’s Note
by Lauren Loeb Ungar
One thing I’ve always loved about Inside New Orleans is that each issue gives space for a local artist to showcase their work. It’s a dive not only into their physical art but also into their lives and the messages their art represents. Each artist lives locally—some take commissions, while others own galleries.
Last month, Zana Brown’s powerful hidden figure graced our cover and told a story about her life expressed through the gold leaf, textures, and motifs she chooses. Zana also hosted our October/November Publication Party alongside 18 of our featured Southern Gentlemen. Her cover art immediately caught my eye, and visiting her split-level Magazine Street gallery completely satisfied my creative appetite—it was a flavor of art I hadn’t realized I was craving.
With every issue of the magazine comes another artist to follow and discover. I see it as a love letter to New Orleans art and to the artists who have cast such an essential cultural anchor. Without them, the portrait of New Orleans would hang incomplete, its colors muted and its story half-told.

Globalization has turned many jewelry stores into merchants, selling pieces made overseas or by other companies—but Boudreaux’s Jewelers stands apart. For four generations, the Boudreaux family has proudly manufactured jewelry locally, employing a full team of skilled jewelers and designers who create and customize each piece in-house.
“It puts us in a position to offer the best advice to clients on the version of a particular piece that may best suit their needs, since we handle every step of the production process,” explains Brandon Boudreaux, great-grandson of founder Gilmore Boudreaux Sr. Gilmore Sr. began his career as a craftsman, working behind the scenes as a jeweler. After observing changes in the market, he opened his own brick-and-mortar shop in 1933— the height of the Great Depression! Taking a daring leap into his entrepreneurial goals, he became very successful, and, in the 1950s, he transitioned into retail. Today, Brandon— continuing the family legacy as Boudreaux’s Chief Operating Officer and Lead Designer—carries on that same passion for craftsmanship and innovation.
“Creating my first piece for a client was unforgettable,” Brandon recalls. “I spent months teaching myself CAD software to design it. Seeing the piece come to life, and the client’s face when they opened the box, was something I’ll never forget.”
For the Boudreaux family, delighting and exceeding customers’ expectations is more than a business model, it’s a family value. Brandon, his father, uncles, and brother continue to uphold that tradition every day. “I
Boudreaux’s Jewelers
knew I wanted to become a jeweler to carry on the family legacy and to help our clients celebrate those very special moments in their lives,” he explains. Growing up in the Old Metairie and Mandeville stores, Brandon watched his father beam with joy each time a client smiled, whether it was over a restored heirloom or a newly finished engagement ring. Those moments of shared happiness left a lasting impression.
Now, Brandon walks fully in his great-grandfather’s footsteps, sharing that same warmth and creativity with his own children. “Having my kids come into the store and play with the tools and equipment is the highlight of my day,” he says. He fondly remembers doing the same—making photocopies of his hands, playing with the old registers, and growing up surrounded by the sparkle of craftsmanship and family tradition.
As Boudreaux’s Jewelers prepares to break ground in 2026 on an expansion and renovation of its Mandeville location, clients can look forward to seeing the store double in size. The workshop will also grow, allowing Boudreaux’s to craft even more pieces manufactured in-house. The store will remain fully operational throughout construction—“so no need to worry for our Northshore clients!” Brandon assures. This exciting expansion marks another milestone in the care for clients and enduring legacy of Boudreaux’s Jewelers.

Building a Stronger Future Through Giving Back
INSIDE NEW ORLEANS CLOSES EACH YEAR with a toast to local businesses and organizations dedicated to giving back to the city we love. These community champions embody the spirit of generosity and service that defines New Orleans, making our home a stronger, kinder place for all.
SWIM FOR BROOKE
The Brooke Erin Posey Foundation’s annual Swim for Brooke event supports local non-profits that specifically promote youth wellness and enrichment in Greater New Orleans. Founder Melissa Corass named the foundation for her stepdaughter, Brooke, who passed away at just 17 in a car accident. “Her compassion and zest for life inspired everyone who knew her. She believed deeply in helping others and building community,” Melissa says, which is why Swim for Brooke has financially given back to nine local non-profits, including Hope House, JoJo’s Hope, and Heart of Passion. Each year, they review nominations to ensure they give back to impactful, fiscally responsible non-profits with a strong presence in our community.

In 2006, Rodrigue co-founded the Bayou District Foundation, creating sustainable community resources,
including the Educare early learning facility in Columbia Parish. From rebuilding Louisiana’s coastline to educating future generations, Acme Oyster House proudly serves meaningful change.

“Stop Waiting. Start IMPACTing.”
As a lifelong resident educated and employed in our great city, I often found myself saying, “I wish there was something I could do.” That thought became a calling. I startedIMPACT504 and recently introduced plans for our IMPACT University - a wraparound services community center that will serve as a launchpad for community dreams and provide affordable housing in our area - because I believe in the brilliance and beauty within our communities— youth, adults, and seniors alike.
I lead this foundation along with our 13-member volunteer board because service is not about recognition—it’s about transformation. Our team is 100% volunteer-driven, united by one mission: to create opportunities for those who need them most.
What We Do.
For five years, we’ve been reaching underserved neighborhoods, providing resources, mentorship, and programs that unlock potential and restore hope. From educational workshops to distributing coats, toys, and household essentials, we’ve proven that IMPACT happens when we act.
The Power of Your Support. Your involvement changes lives. Here’s how: Volunteer: Share your time and talents. Donate Items & Services: Every contribution matters. Give Financially: Your gift multiplies. Imagine this: a $4,000 donation can become $40,000 worth of coats, toys, and household items for families in need. That’s the power of partnership.
That’s the power of IMPACT. Every dollar of your donation goes directly to providing quality programs and resources to our city’s vulnerable populations!
Our Vision for Greater IMPACT
We’ve done the work for five years—and we’re just getting started. With your help, we can expand programs, reach more families, and create lasting change.
Stop sitting and waiting for someone else to do it. Step up. Be the change you want to see.

IN Better Health
Elaine Kao, MD
Ochsner Health
FOR MOST OF HER LIFE, Erica Tricou lived with pain that few could understand. What began as severe cramping around age twelve soon became a monthly ordeal that dictated every part of her life.
“Between countless visits to the ER and specialists, misdiagnoses, and dismissal of my symptoms, it was wearing me down in every possible way— physically, emotionally, and financially,” she recalls. After years of searching, Erica finally received a diagnosis: endometriosis, a condition in which tissue similar to the uterine lining grows outside the uterus. This misplaced tissue reacts to monthly hormonal cycles, leading to internal bleeding, inflammation, and scar tissue formation. The result is often intense pelvic pain, heavy bleeding, and, in many cases, infertility. Affecting at least one in ten women of reproductive age, endometriosis is far from rare—but proper treatment can be difficult to find.
Medical Condition: Endometriosis
Treatment: Laparoscopic excision surgery
Erica’s first surgery, a laparoscopic ablation, confirmed the diagnosis but didn’t bring the relief she hoped for. “The ablation process can create scarring and lead to more damage,” she explains. “It was frustrating to
realize that what I thought would bring me relief actually made things worse.” When her pain returned, stronger than ever, she knew she needed a different approach.
That search led her to Dr. Elaine Kao, a board-certified OB/GYN and Fellow of the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (FACOG). With over a decade of experience in Louisiana and Mississippi, Dr. Kao now serves as the Medical Director of the Women’s Advanced Minimally Invasive Surgery Program at Ochsner Health, where she focuses on complex gynecological conditions like endometriosis.
From their first meeting, Erica could tell this experience would be different. “I had seen about a dozen doctors before Dr. Kao, but most offered outdated information or only performed ablation surgeries,” she says. “Dr. Kao understood that excision—the complete removal of endometrial lesions—is the gold standard for treatment.”
Dr. Kao developed a personalized care plan centered on minimally invasive excision surgery, supported by a multidisciplinary recovery strategy. Her approach emphasizes not just removing the disease, but restoring patients’ quality of life. “Our goal is comprehensive care,” Dr. Kao explains. “That means advanced surgical precision combined with long-term support—physical therapy, integrative medicine, and follow-up tailored to each woman’s needs.”
The surgery was a turning point. “Since the excision, I’m finally able to function without constant pain and fatigue,” Erica says. “I feel better than I have in years.” While endometriosis can be unpredictable, her progress has brought new hope and stability. “Having this disease means I’ll never know if it will come back, but I finally have control of my life again.”
Erica’s story is a powerful reminder that expert, compassionate care can make all the difference. “Dr. Kao doesn’t just treat endometriosis—she understands it,” Erica says. “She gave me more than relief; she gave me my life back.”

IN Better Health
Medical Condition:
Facial aging accompanied by dermatochalasis, rhytids (wrinkles), and sagging skin, all indicative of the natural aging process.
Treatment:
Comprehensive Facelift (Rhytidectomy)
AS WE AGE, our bodies naturally produce less collagen and elastin—the proteins that keep our skin firm and smooth. Kathy Lanaux Johnson was no exception. But today, you’d never know it!
When she started to notice signs of aging on her face and neck, like skin sagging, a lack of definition in her jawline, and, the most common of them all, wrinkles, she was recommended to see Dr. David A. Jansen. With over 30 years of experience in both cosmetic surgery and breast reconstruction, Dr. Jansen’s reputation precedes him as one of the most skilled and trusted surgeons in the field. During their first consultation, he performed a thorough facial assessment and explained to Kathy the anatomical changes that occur with age.
From the moment Kathy met Dr. Jansen, she was drawn to his personality—warm, confident, and genuine. “I loved my first impression of him. He immediately made me feel comfortable and understood, and I knew right then that I wanted him to be my surgeon.” Kathy says.
Dr. Jansen reviewed every possible
Dr. David A. Jansen, Jansen Plastic Surgery
treatment option with her, from nonsurgical interventions to surgical rejuvenation, and clearly outlined what each could achieve. “His attention to detail and honest, thoughtful approach made me feel completely at ease. I appreciated how he emphasized a natural outcome—a refreshed version of myself, not a dramatically altered one!” Kathy emphasized.
“The patient’s concerns were not uncommon, as these changes are a typical manifestation of the gradual loss of skin elasticity, facial volume loss, and the weakening of supportive structures beneath the skin.” Dr. Jansen explains.
They created a well-rounded, holistic treatment plan; Kathy would undergo a Comprehensive Facelift (medically known as Rhytidectomy) to revitalize her lower face and neck areas. This procedure involved the meticulous removal of excess skin that had loosened over time, along with tightening the underlying connective tissues that had lost their firmness. To restore definition to her jawline, Dr. Jansen performed liposuction beneath her chin to contour the area.
Post-op, Kathy’s recovery was perfection. Her swelling and bruising was very manageable, and within a few weeks, Dr. Jansen, who kept a close watch on Kathy—as he does for all his patients—, began to see the transformation take shape. Each week, he noticed improvements in her facial contours, particularly in the lift of her cheek area and a more defined jawline.
“Dr. Jansen follows you very closely, which I loved,” Kathy explains.
Her final result was a naturally rejuvenated appearance aligning perfectly with her desire for subtlety and balance, leaving Kathy highly satisfied and confident: “My face looks natural, youthful, and refreshed.”
To maintain her youthful look, she’s adopted a skincare regimen recommended by his office protecting her skin from the sun. She also makes it a habit to maintain a healthy lifestyle to prolong the results of the procedure.
“I can’t say enough wonderful things about Dr. Jansen. His surgical talent is matched only by his kindness and professionalism,” Kathy says. “Everyone deserves a doctor like Dr. Jansen.”
Dr. David A. Jansen.

Haydel’s King Cakes
A Twelfth Night Tradition
In New Orleans, the arrival of Twelfth Night signals more than the end of the Christmas season—it marks the joyful opening of Carnival and the return of one of the city’s most anticipated delights: Haydel’s legendary king cakes. Few local traditions are as deeply woven into the cultural fabric of New Orleans as the sharing of these sweet, symbolic confections. For generations, Haydel’s Bakery has stood at the heart of that ritual.
Founded in 1959 by Mildred and Lloyd Haydel as a humble 24-hour walk-up bakery, Haydel’s has grown into an iconic institution known across the region for scratch-made pastries, family-recipe treats, and, above all, its unmistakable king cakes. Now operated by the third generation of the Haydel family, the bakery continues to honor its heritage with unparalleled craftsmanship. Owner David Haydel, the only Louisiana baker internationally certified as both Craftsman and Master Baker, carries on the legacy with the same attention to quality and tradition that defined the shop from its earliest days. Their dedication even earned them a Guinness World Record in 2010 for crafting the World’s Largest King Cake! Haydel’s traditional king cakes remain a cherished
favorite. Each one begins with tender Danish dough, hand-braided with cinnamon and sugar, baked until golden, then lavishly topped with fondant icing and the iconic Mardi Gras trio of purple, green, and gold sugar. Every bite captures the spirit of Carnival—celebratory, sweet, and unmistakably New Orleans.
For those craving a twist on the classic, the bakery’s signature Cajun Kringle® has become a Christmastime staple. This flaky, buttery pastry is filled with rich praline, glazed with caramel icing, and crowned with Southern pecans—an indulgent treat perfect for the festive season. Fans also adore the Da Parish King Cake, a playful nod to local pride, featuring hand-braided dough baked with Mardi Gras sugars and finished with generous drizzles of icing and sprinkles.
And for holiday revelers looking to bring a little yuletide cheer to the tradition, Haydel’s offers a special Christmas king cake decorated with red and green sugar—an irresistible centerpiece for any seasonal celebration.
From Twelfth Night through Mardi Gras Day, Haydel’s king cakes aren’t just pastries—they’re edible heirlooms, tying generations together through flavor, family, and the enduring joy of Carnival.
