LETTER FROM THE EDITOR A Season of Possibilities written by DIANNE PINEDA-KIM

As the sun shines brighter and temperatures rise, summer unveils a world of endless possibilities for travel, relaxation, excitement, and outdoor activities. After the trying times of the pandemic, it feels like a breath of fresh air has swept over the world, breathing life into once-halted events and reigniting our spirits.

The Jeonju International Film Festival (JIFF) opened its curtains for the 24th time, bringing together lm creators and enthusiasts from all over the world. This year's JIFF brought even more vibrance to the streets of Gaeksa than its o cial orange theme, with visitors immersing themselves in Jeonju’s rich history, traditional architecture, and mouthwatering culinary delights. Now is the perfect time to shed the weariness of the past and embark on new adventures, immersing ourselves in the vibrant tapestry of the season. Coincidentally, the Jeonbuk International Exchange Center has changed its name to Jeonbuk International Cooperation Agency, beginning a bigger role in integrating the international and local communities by creating new business prospects, initiating mutual exchanges, and strengthening ties. The center plans to serve as the bridge between Jeollabuk-do and the world: by supporting local youths and their dreams of going abroad, helping foreign residents and students get settled here, and lastly, introducing the best of what Jeollabuk-do has to o er. As the colors of nature come to life in the summer, the street art in the mural villages of Jeongeup and Jeonju invites visitors to appreciate creativity from inside and outside the community. In this issue, we invite you to hike through these colorful nooks and alleys, and to explore the long suspension bridges found in Jinan, Simchang, and Imsil. Whether it's lounging in refreshing valleys, traversing lush hiking trails, or indulging in exhilarating outdoor sports, summer presents a canvas of opportunities to create unforgettable memories. We also tell the story of a participant of the Asia Paci c Masters Games, who took part in a marathon as part of Jeonbuk’s most-awaited sporting event. From trendy urban cafes to tranquil recreational forests and temples celebrating Buddha’s birthday, destinations beckon with open arms, ready to enchant and rejuvenate. We also traveled back in time to a little Swiss destination, a replica of the famed resort town of Engelberg located in the heart of Jeongeup. Discover a captivating blend of city, nature, and tradition in Jeollabuk-do, Korea this summer! Immerse yourself in vibrant city life, explore breathtaking natural landscapes, and soak in the rich cultural heritage of its many regions. With a perfect fusion of modernity and tradition, Jeollabuk-do promises an unforgettable experience. So grab your sunscreen, pack your bags, and let the warm embrace of the sun guide you toward a summer lled with exploration, joy, and the rediscovery of the world around us.

TRAVEL | RECREATIONAL FORESTS

Recreational Forests BY BETHANY MCCALL

E

very summer, the same few questions come up again and again: "Where can I go to cool off?” or "Where can I go to swim outdoors?” While Jeollabuk-do isn’t particularly well known as a summertime beach destination, the province is full of tree-covered mountains interspersed with streams that flow through the valleys.

If you’re lucky, you may stumble upon your own secret swimming hole in the mountains. But if you don’t have time to hike around looking for a hidden place to cool off, head to one of Jeollabuk-do’s many recreational forests and be guaranteed a refreshing and picturesque summer spot.

6 JEONBUK LIFE

Korea’s recreational forests are managed by the Korea Forest Service. There are over 100 nationwide, with a dozen located in Jeollabukdo. While each recreational forest has different facilities and scenery, many are located near valleys, offering the option of enjoying a shady walk under the trees, a hike on a nearby mountain, or a chance to dip your feet in a cool stream. Facilities also vary, but recreational parks offer a variety of accommodations that you can reserve for overnight stays, including log cabins and campsites. Some unique places to stay in Jeollabuk-do include treehouse cabins in Muju Hyangnosan Recreational Forest and rooms with an ocean view in Byeonsan Recreational Forest. Day trippers can also reserve a wooden platform and pavilion to set up a tent or enjoy a picnic. Other useful facilities include restrooms, showers, and ample parking. More details about facilities, reservations, and fees for each park can be found on the official website, www.foresttrip.go.kr. Because recreational forests are especially popular in the summer, reservations for peak season (around July and August) are made using a lottery system about a month before peak season starts. Check the website for specific dates. Personally, I haven’t yet tried my luck at making it through the online lottery—but even without an overnight reservation, I’ve enjoyed many day trips to recreational forests around the province.

Gosan Recreational Forest (고산자연휴양림) Located in Wanju, just a short drive from Jeonju, this park can fill up quickly with local families. However, if you arrive in the morning (or, even better, on a slightly drizzly day), you should be able to find your own peaceful spot to enjoy splashing around. Near the entrance of the park is a large mugunghwathemed garden, which was featured in the last issue of this magazine and reaches spectacular full bloom at the height of summer.

While each recreational forest has different facilities and scenery, many are located near valleys, offering the option of enjoying a shady walk under the trees, a hike on a nearby mountain, or a chance to dip your feet in a cool stream.

Waryong Recreational Forest

This recreational forest in Jinan is a bit more isolated, and is accessible via a somewhat harrowing drive up a one-lane road with a mountain on one side and a drop into the valley stream on the other. (Just hope that no cars are coming the other way!)Thankfully, the lush landscape makes it worth the trip, and you can let your worries float away down the stream.

Waryong Recreational Forest is located in Jangsu, at the end of a road that leads through a charming village dotted with flowers and small farms. The park has plenty of facilities for families to enjoy, including a swimming pool and water sledding area that are open in the summer. Taking a walk along the stream also leads to some dramatic waterfall views.

CULTURE | THE GREATEST TEACHER OF MANKIND_CELEBRATIING BUDDHA'S BIRTHDAY IN KOREA

B

uddha’s birthday fell on Saturday, May 27th this year, with a substitute holiday on the following Monday. I traveled to the southern part of Jeollabuk-do over the long weekend and decided to visit the temple in Naejangsan National Park again. I’ve been there a few times, but this amazing temple has never failed to amaze me. Of course, the design of Buddhist temples varies between regions and countries.

This temple has mountains and clouds in the background. It is designed to symbolize the five elements: fire, air, water, earth, and wisdom.

Mankind’s Greatest Teacher

Celebrating Buddha’s Birthday in Korea BY DIVINE QUINITO

For a year and a half now, I’ve been doing yoga, which is actually related to Buddhism and Hinduism. The experience has made me want to dig deeper into the roots of Buddha’s birthday. They sell these roof tiles where people can write their prayers.

Traditionally, people can purchase lanterns or tags that can be clipped onto lanterns and write their family members’ names on them. These lanterns are hung inside and around the temple, then lit with candles on the night of Buddha’s birthday. This brings good fortune to their loved ones in the year to come.

FRESH START The Jeonbuk International Exchange Center has changed its name to the Jeonbuk International Cooperation Agency and made a fresh start

The Jeollabuk-do International Exchange Center changed its name to the Jeonbuk International Cooperation Agency on June 29. Through this reorganization, which takes place 8 years after it opened in 2015, it has been reborn as the central axis of public diplomacy in Jeollabuk-do.

In addition, through cooperation with 14 cities, counties, and local governments in the province, we plan to take the lead in strengthening Jeonbuk's international competitiveness by carrying out the additional function of supporting businesses and young people from the province in going abroad.

It reflects a will to focus on cooperation projects with overseas partners, not just international exchanges, to realize one of the mottos of the eighth civil election Q I am curious about the future steps of Director Kim Dae-shik, the head of the Jeonbuk International Jeonbuk provincial government: "Strengthening Cooperation Agency. international capacity to pursue the practical benefits of knowledge." We plan to change the structure of the organization from the current three teams to ”two rooms, four teams” and to strengthen the business staff. One particularly important change is that we plan to establish a Strategic Project Team to advance the Jeonbuk-type development cooperation promotion system, in response to the provincial internationalization plan. In terms of departmental structure, the Education Cooperation Team will be changed to the Foreigner Exchange Team to further accelerate the preparation

Along these lines, we will explore development cooperation (ODA) projects that make use of the characteristics of Jeonbuk. In addition, the organization will play a bigger role in assisting with settling foreigners and attracting foreign students, which are urgent issues facing Jeonbuk. We will also actively promote projects to further strengthen the internationalization capabilities of Jeonbuk residents and youth.

Built to emulate wooden resort lodges and rustic Swiss homes, Engelberg has not only recreated the region’s architecture but the coziness that comes along with it. The resort is not just for accommodations and sightseeing. It also has several exciting activities waiting for visitors.

There are several more attractions under construction in the village, but rest assured that they’ll be entertaining guests soon. In progress are the Bistro Frankfurt and Sky Lounge, which will serve delightful meals to guests, Brewery Brauhaus for draft beer, and a rooftop cafe where guests can enjoy a view of the idyllic landscapes of Jeongeup.

Once inside, you’ll be greeted by the appetizing smell of freshly made bread and pastries, courtesy of a foreign patisserie chef who will be more than happy to recommend the day’s specialties. You can make reservations for high tea with delectable treats, and be seated in antique furniture with elegant tableware to eat with. The Living Goods Exhibition and Sales Hall is a spacious section inside where visitors can view vintage furniture, decorations, and tea sets. Visitors will be guided by a gracious host who will explain the various trinkets found in the gallery.

This unique project brings a touch of Switzerland's charm and beauty to the Korean landscape. By recreating the ambiance and architecture of the Swiss village it takes its name from, Engelberg offers visitors to Jeongeup the chance to experience a taste of Swiss culture and immerse themselves in the tranquil surroundings that the region is known for. This fusion of cultures provides a delightful escape from the ordinary, offering locals and tourists alike a chance to indulge in the picturesque atmosphere of Engelberg right in South Korea.
