JACK M.BARRACK HEBREW ACADEMY’S Honoree Susan B. Friedman Susan Friedman holds a B.S. in Psychology and Mathematics, an M.A.T. in Elementary Education (K-8), an M.Ed. in Counseling Psychology, and an M.A. in Educational Administration. She is certified in Pennsylvania as a teacher (K-8), a guidance counselor (K-8), and a principal (K-8). She is a member of: Association for Middle Level Education (AMLE); Association for Supervision and Curriculum Development (ASCD); National Council of Teachers of Mathematics (NCTM); Phi Delta Kappa; Kappa Delta Pi International Honor Society in Education; and the Phi Kappa Phi Honor Society. Susan’s career began with high quality graduate internships in the inner city schools of McKeesport, PA, Camden, NJ, and Chester, PA, where she worked as a teacher and guidance counselor. She was part of a select group of graduate students who created The Model School, an inner city/University of Pittsburgh joint initiative, in McKeesport, PA. This was her first experience working with a team to create a model elementary school – an unforgettable experience, which then laid the foundation for the future. Susan’s career continued at the Stern Center of Perelman Jewish Day School, where she and Joan Grossman, za’al, created a unique sixth grade middle school program within an elementary school. Susan taught Mathematics and Ancient History from 1987-1998, also serving as: Advisor to the Student Yearbook; Director of the Gifted Program; Advisor to Student Council; Special Projects Coordinator; and Co-Head of the Teachers Union. Susan moved into administration in 1998, when she accepted a position as Principal of Secular Studies at Torah Academy of Greater Philadelphia in Wynnewood, PA. The Board of Directors of Torah Academy of Greater Philadelphia charged her with bringing the school’s secular curriculum into the 21st century. That endeavor was highly successful! Continued

Honoree Susan B. Friedman continued Susan was invited by the Board of Directors of Perelman Jewish Day School in February of 2000 to create the “middle school of her dreams”— a once-in-a-lifetime honor, privilege, and dream come true. Working with a highly talented steering committee for 18 months, Susan helped create the Middle School of the Raymond & Ruth Perelman Jewish Day School, situated on the Mandell Education Campus in Melrose Park, PA. Susan was instrumental in bringing the relatively young OROT Program to the new middle school. At the current time, Susan is proud to sponsor the Push-in Plus Program of OROT at Saligman at Barrack. Shortly after opening the new middle school, because of its great success, Saligman at Perelman received a major gift from the Robert Saligman Foundation to rename the school the Robert Saligman Middle School of Perelman Jewish Day School. Susan remains forever grateful to the Saligman Family for all that they have done for her and for so many incredible children and families in the Greater Philadelphia area. The Robert Saligman Middle School of PJDS attained its first formal full accreditation from the Pennsylvania Association of Independent Schools (PAIS) in the spring of 2003. The school was reaccredited in December of 2012, when the visiting PAIS Committee declared the school to be “the crown jewel” of the PJDS system. Because of economic factors, Saligman at PJDS merged with the Middle School of the Jack M. Barrack Hebrew Academy in September of 2013. Susan was given another opportunity to recreate the school of her dreams, this time on a larger scale. The Robert Saligman Middle School of the Jack M. Barrack Hebrew Academy proudly opened its doors on September 3, 2013 and was formally dedicated in a beautiful community ceremony on Sunday, November 24, 2013.

In private life, Susan has been a member of Temple Sholom in Broomall for 35 years, where she has served on the Board of Directors and is currently on the Personnel Committee. Starting in September, she will be the layperson who oversees the educational programs at Temple Sholom. Susan hopes to rotate onto the Board of Directors of Heart of Hope – The Caralynn Titter Foundation, an amazing organization that works directly with hospital personnel to help meet the needs of families facing the challenges of pediatric heart transplantation. Susan is also a member of the DMAX Foundation, whose mission is to eliminate mental health stigma and encourage safe and caring conversations about mental health issues and emotional pain in our youth. Susan’s other interests include special needs children, adoption, and improving the way that we deal with mental health issues. In addition, Susan enjoys speed walking, cooking, and all sorts of handiwork, especially tapestry weaving, fabric weaving, knitting, and macrame. Susan has been happily married to Paul for almost 43 years, is the loving mother of Mark and Lauren, mother-inlaw of Andrew, and adoring grandmother of Ethan, now 18 months old.

JACK M.BARRACK HEBREW ACADEMY’S Keynote Speaker Michael H. Steinhardt Michael H. Steinhardt is a legendary money manager turned philanthropist who is dedicated to creating a renaissance in American Jewish life. After he graduated from the Wharton School of Business in 1960, Mr. Steinhardt began his financial career as a research associate, staff writer and securities analyst. In 1967 he formed his own hedge fund company, Steinhardt Partners L.P., where he made his fortune in one of the most spectacular careers in the history of Wall Street. Mr. Steinhardt has always believed that wealth and financial achievement alone are not sufficient to give full value and meaning to life. At the same time, he has felt growing alarm over the erosion of Jewish life in the Diaspora. In 1995, Michael Steinhardt stunned the financial world by announcing that he would close his lucrative hedge fund to devote his time and fortune to the causes of the Jewish world. Mr. Steinhardt directs his Jewish philanthropic activities through The Steinhardt Foundation for Jewish Life which he chairs. Mr. Steinhardt is the co-founder of Birthright Israel and continues to be a major supporter to this day. Mr. Steinhardt also serves as Co-Chair of the Areivim Philanthropic Group. In addition, Mr. Steinhardt supports the development of Hebrew Language Charter Schools, Hillel at the University of Pennsylvania, New York University's Steinhardt School of Culture, Education, and Human Development, the University of Pennsylvania, Tel Aviv University, and the Israel Museum. In 2001, Mr. Steinhardt published his memoirs, No Bull: My Life In and Out of the Markets (John Wiley & Sons, 2001). He and his wife, Judy, are the proud parents of David, Daniel and Sara, and the grandparents of Jacob, Joshua, Kira, Talia, Nathaniel, Theodore, Lila, Eli, Aetien, Aceena, Halean and Aaliyah.

At Barrack, a vibrant Jewish life both in and out of the classroom revolves around the Jewish calendar. Students feel the rhythm of the Jewish year in regular Shacharit services, class discussions about the weekly Torah readings, Shabbaton programs and holiday celebrations. Our students forge strong bonds with Israel, and can choose to travel to Israel with their classmates in both 8th and 11th grades. We practice the timeless Jewish tradition of Tikkun Olam, repairing the world through community service projects in the middle school, community service internships in the twelfth grade year, and in regular acts of chesed (loving kindness).

Preparing To Lead In the summer of 2015, Barrack opened its state-of-the-art Innovation Lab as the cornerstone of the STEAM Program (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts & Mathematics). Furthering our longstanding progressive approach to learning, the STEAM Program allows students in every grade to create, collaborate and discover while gaining critical 21st century technological expertise. All classes, electives and clubs in the STEAM Program facilitate learning through hands on, workshop-style projects. The program challenges those students who have strong foundations in robotics, engineering and programming and engages students for whom these techniques are unfamiliar. Barrack is committed to expanding the STEAM Program with internships outside of the classroom for students to explore while they learn.

Mrs. Friedman - When Saligman and I both lived at Old York Rd. and Melrose Ave., one of my favorite things to do was to pop in and say hi to teachers, students, and especially you. Now that we've all moved on from that corner, though, I love that we've been able to stay in touch. Your love for teaching, learning, and your students continues to inspire me, and I will cherish forever the connection that I have personally with you. You helped to give me some of my best memories of school, and it's sad to think that when I find time to visit Saligman at its new location, you won't be there. But I wish you the best and more on the rest of your journey, and I can't wait until the next time we get to catch up. Love, Saul
A single hallway can mean so much, A small but mighty place. And yet a warmth exuded That no one can replace. Melrose Ave and Old York Road, Across the street it stood -Mr - The office moved, the school did too, Our kids had all moved on; Could NEVER be all gone.
By things you said and did. The growth and sense of worth you put In each and every kid. We thank you for all that and more; The list goes on forever; You let each student know they could Succeed in each endeavor. We wish you all the best of things In whatever you choose to do. earned retirement, MAZAL TOV and ALL THE BEST! KEEP IN TOUCH Love, The ZEBOVITZ Family
I have so many fond memories from your time at Saligman, from sharing chocolate on the plane (twice), to heart-to-hearts throughout the years, to hanging before the school year... You have truly left your mark on me, and I wish you behatzlacha on your next step! Love, Sara
Mrs. Friedman, Saligman definitely would not have been the same without you. Your door was always open for us to pop in and say hi, grab a piece of chocolate, chat for awhile, etc. You were definitely the "sweetest" principal we ever had, both literally and figuratively! The chocolate obviously looms large in our collective memory, but we also remember how thoughtful and understanding you always were with any concerns we brought to you. And you never ceased to ask for updates on our families! Whenever we think back to Saligman, you are always among our fondest memories. We miss you so much and we wish you luck in whatever comes next! Love, Leah and Gracy

Dear Susan, Your sense of style is unmistakable from your great jewelry to your beautiful sense of color, your ever-flowing bowl of chocolates, your excellent taste in friends, movies and books, and your use of Comic Sans in every thoughtfully-written note, memo, Nahat Note, holiday card, letter and emoticon .
We are all enriched for having known you, for having learned from you, and for having worked with you. In challenging times, we have forged a set of shared values; and at other times, we have shared beautiful moments in the life cycle, and good laughs over everyday life. to the entire Jack M. Barrack Hebrew Academy Community: those who have known me for several years are aware of the fact that Wicked is one of my most favorite shows ever. the song “For Good” from Wicked is the most exquisitely beautiful song and truly reflects my feelings for all of you. From Wicked--
I've heard it said That people come into our lives for a reason Bringing something we must learn And we are led To those who help us most to grow If we let them And we help them in return Well, I don't know if I believe that's true But I know I'm who I am today Because I knew you Like a comet pulled from orbit As it passes a sun Like a stream that meets a boulder Halfway through the wood Who can say if I've been changed for the better? But because I knew you I have been changed for good It well may be That we will never meet again In this lifetime So let me say before we part So much of me Is made of what I learned from you You'll be with me Like a handprint on my heart And now whatever way our stories end I know you have rewritten mine By being my friend Like a ship blown from its mooring By a wind off the sea Like a seed dropped by a sky bird In a distant wood Who can say if I've been changed for the better? But because I knew you I have been changed for good God bless each and every one of you with long life, peace, good health, and an abun-dance of happiness (and chocolate)! I shall never, ever forget you. “So much of me is made of what I learned from you. You’ll be with me like a handprint on my heart.” Thank you, thank you, and thank you for this exquisite honor!!!
