A YEAR OFJEWISH CONTINUITY JACK M. BARRACK HEBREW ACADEMY ANNUAL REPORT

"IN A WORLD OF INSECURITY AND UNCERTAINTY, WE HAVE CHOSEN TO SEND OUR CHILDREN TO A PLACE WHERE THEY ARE NURTURED AND GENTLY PUSHED TO EXCEL IN NOT ONLYTHE ACADEMIC ARENA... A PLACE WHERE THEY LEARN TO CARE ABOUT THEIR WORLD AND THOSE AROUND THEM; WHERE THEY ARE LEARNING NOT ONLY HOW TO BE JEWISH, BUT WHAT BEING JEWISH TRULY MEANS." - PROUD BARRACK PARENT

AYEAR OF DISCOVERY

On March 9, 2016, our Jack M. Barrack Annual Gala celebrated Jewish Continuity: A Time for Meaningful Change. Philanthropist and keynote speaker, Michael Steinhardt, co-founder of Birthright Israel, spoke of a vision of a Jewish day school education with a curriculum that is relevant and engaging, one that is rooted in "a history that we can see ourselves in, rather than a history that leaves us out." Since its founding in 1946, our school has nurtured and supported young adults as they have studied our common Jewish heritage and learned to make intelligent and informed choices as part of the global, American, and Jewish communities. Barrack is a school where students can embrace their spiritual and academic development and discover their passions through programs that ignite their creativity and imaginations, such as JLI (Jewish Leadership Initiative), engineering courses in our new STEAM Lab, our 8th grade trip to Israel, and our Muss 11th grade trimester of study in Israel. We remain dedicated to our long tradition of growth and innovation. Thank you for partnering with us as we proudly move forward into our 70th year.

AYEAR OF EXPLORING

Taking the Lead In the summer of 2015, Barrack opened its state-of-the-art Innovation Lab as the cornerstone of the STEAM Program (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts & Mathematics). Furthering our long-standing progressive approach to learning, the STEAM Program allows students in every grade to create, collaborate and discover while gaining critical 21st century technological expertise.

All classes, electives and clubs in the STEAM Program facilitate learning through hands on, workshop-style projects. The program challenges those students who have strong foundations in robotics, engineering and programming and engages students for whom these techniques are unfamiliar. Beginning in the 2016-17 school year, Barrack's STEAM Institute will launch an engineering track that will start in 9th grade and conclude with a special certiďŹ cate at graduation. The 9th graders who have applied, been interviewed, and successfully admitted to this track will begin with "Introduction to Engineering." Students successfully completing this course will move to a Biomedical Engineering course in 10th grade. For grades 11 and 12, the STEAM Institute will create and oversee student research opportunities. Additionally, because of increased enrollment in the incoming 6th grade class, the school created an additional STEAM elective to serve the needs of every incoming middle schooler.

Ben Bernstein '14 I'm a rising junior at Penn studying mechanical engineering. I am currently interning at Fender Guitars in California as a manufacturing engineer. During the year I work in a robotics lab at Penn. Barrack helped prepare me for engineering and college by providing me with a great STEM background from dedicated teachers. I also learned how to express my opinions and evaluate those of others, which is incredibly important in the real world. I visited the Innovation Lab a few months ago and was admittedly a bit jealous. The equipment available in the lab is perfect for letting students be creative while learning about engineering. The kids will be using the same skills I learned in my ďŹ rst year of college. I hope all students are encouraged to make use of this great opportunity.

AYEAR OF EXPERIENCE

A Commitment to Israel Barrack forges strong ties with Israel and inspires an ongoing commitment to the Jewish homeland and people through the study of Israeli history, culture, and current events as well as the celebration and commemoration of Israeli holidays and days of remembrance. As early as 6th grade, Barrack prepares our students for the experience that awaits them on college campuses by being at the forefront of Diaspora/ Israel programming and experiences.

During the 2015-16 school year, we sent 48 eleventh graders on the Alexander Muss High School in Israel program for the first trimester and 53 eighth graders to Israel for 11 days in the Spring. Every year, we host students from our sister school in Petach Tikvah, Echad Ha'am. We continue to examine and evaluate our efforts and have created a robust and comprehensive Israel education curriculum, now proudly called the Center for Israel Studies. The ultimate goal of Israel education at Barrack is to provide a comprehensive education and to nurture informed thinkers who are passionate and educated about Zionism and who have a strong love of Israel. The Center will incorporate: ■

classroom-based, informal and experiential instruction across all grades

Jewish studies classes in Bible and rabbinic literature ranging from ancient Israelites and the historical basis for the Bible all the way to modern Israeli history and comparative religion

extensive preparation of 7th graders for the 8th grade Israel immersion experience

multi-disciplinary study of ancient Jewish history and archaeology, ethnology and geography, Israeli government and coalition politics, and immigration

Hebrew language classes, including the study of literature, current events, music and culture

STEAM classes highlighting Israel: The Start Up Nation

school-wide celebrations of Israeli holidays

conferences, assemblies, and workshops

adoption of an IDF unit

extensive preparation for college campus engagement on Israel

significant professional development for faculty, including the Israel Education Summer Institute, Kivunim Summer Education Institute in Israel, and the AVI CHAI/Brandeis conference

Rachel Gordon ’12 I enlisted in the IDF in the fall of 2014. My decision to move to Israel was a gradual one, but really crystalized as an 11th grader attending the Muss program. The opportunity to travel through the gorgeous country while studying our rich history left no doubt in my mind that I wanted to become part of this complex yet flourishing democracy. This decision to play an active role in the future of Israel inevitably led me to the IDF where I have been serving for the past four years. Barrack is at the forefront of Diaspora/Israel programming, education, and dialogue, preparing all of our students for the experience that awaits them on college campuses. I am currently serving as the Operations Officer and Head of Strategic Planning in the Foreign Press Branch of the IDF Spokesperson’s Unit.

AYEAR OF TEAMWORK

Chaim Bloom '00 Excellence In and Out of the Classroom At Barrack, athletics are seen as an extension of the classroom experience and part of a dynamic collective. While participating in our interscholastic program, our student athletes develop a strong work ethic and learn the values of teamwork, leadership, sportsmanship and mutual respect. A sense of pride, dedication, excellence, commitment and accomplishment is emphasized and highly encouraged. Through participation in 31 sports teams available to students in both Middle and Upper School, our student athletes are empowered to excel and achieve their full potential while also creating lifelong memories and friendships.

Jen Etkin '93 Playing sports at Akiba and being an athlete is really the foundation for how I conduct myself on a daily basis. As an athlete, I always competed in team sports. That required cooperation, working together towards a common goal and knowing when to lead or when to follow. Being the best on the field or the court does not always mean scoring the most points or having the most goals. It also means being able to motivate your teammates to work hard, ensuring that everyone on the team, regardless of their role, knows their hard work is appreciated and meaningful to the team. It means leading by example on and off the court and showing respect and good sportsmanship to others. I understand that leadership comes with responsibilities to the team and to myself and it is something that I continue to take seriously in my professional career.

As Vice President, Baseball Operations of the Tampa Bay Rays, I'm involved in all aspects of baseball operations, from our Major League roster to our Minor League system and international operations. I've been with the Rays since 2005 in a variety of roles and have served in this capacity for the last two years. I'm proud of the culture we've built in my time with the Rays, but even more proud of my family: my wife Aliza and our son, Isaiah, who turns 2 in August. My years at Akiba were critical to my development, both academically and personally. More important than any specific piece of knowledge that I received was in fact learning how to read, how to parse things and how to think critically. Akiba also tries to make students aware of how to treat others, and of their responsibility as citizens of a larger world, and that's a mindset that stays with me in my work and my life.

As a personal injury attorney, often times representing people who do not know how to be advocates for themselves, I take on a significant responsibility. The same work ethic that I learned in team practices comes into play when preparing cases on behalf of clients. The same pressure that one feels when stepping up to the free throw line with the game in the balance is similarly felt when walking into a court room to present a case. And the same confidence I developed in myself, by having my teammates and coaches relying on me in critical moments of games is present today.

AYEAR OF CREATIVITY

Personal Expression at Barrack From singing in a vocal ensemble and rock drumming, to directing and acting in school dramas and musicals and painting a self-portrait, Barrack Hebrew Academy students have myriad opportunities to discover, develop and nurture their interests and talents in the realms of music, theatre and visual arts.

Faculty members in performing and visual arts departments are trained professionals who eagerly share their passions for creative expression with our Middle and Upper School students, inspiring them to explore and appreciate the wide world of the Arts and make it an integral part of their lives. Enhanced arts programs at Barrack, including academic courses, clubs, and performance opportunities, all further our commitment to providing students with a well-rounded and comprehensive education. Barrack students proudly share their accomplishments in the Arts with the school and broader communities, performing in music recitals and theatre productions, as well as participating in school and juried art shows. This year, 36 schools ranging from huge school districts to small independent schools, from across the entire Philadelphia region participated in the Cappy Awards. Competing against schools such as Upper Dublin High School, Plymouth Whitemarsh High School, Friends’ Central School, and Episcopal Academy, Barrack was the smallest school and had the only student directed and produced play. The production “The 39 Steps” received 11 nominations and took home gold in five categories.

Mordechai N. Rosenstein '51 (a.k.a. MURPH) I am working as an artist, creating, teaching and working as an "artistin-residence" in synagogues, Jewish day schools and camps throughout the USA. My two children, Lisa and Judah, are graduates of Akiba (now Barrack). The vehicle for my art are the letters of the Hebrew Alphabet. I became aware of our culture and history at Akiba and these things are paramount in my life, both artistically and in my life style. The values I learned at Akiba have been with me always. I always felt that my parents’ decision to enter me in the first class at Akiba set a positive direction for the rest of my life, artistic career and major accomplishments.

I HAVE WATCHED MY DAUGHTER JESSIE, NOW FINISHING HER FIRST YEAR AT BARRACK, COME HOME EVERY DAY HAPPY AND ENGAGED IN HER SCHOOL COMMUNITY AND IN THE WORLD AROUND HER. The Lande-Singer Family Leah Lande '89 Marc Singer Jessie Singer '22 Eden Singer '23 Noa Singer – 2nd grade at Perelman

eah Lande’s parents, Gabriella and Ken Lande, fled from Europe in 1939, arriving in New York City as small children. Ken’s father, Bernard Lande, survived a year in two concentration camps.

L

Gaby’s father, Elias Rosner, a caring and dedicated physician in Munich, Germany, had to start over in the U.S., working hard to reestablish himself with a successful medical practice out of their home in Brooklyn. Gaby and Ken’s childhoods were imbued with appreciation for having the opportunity to live in peace and freedom in the U.S. They are, to this day, the ultimate patriots, and have never taken for granted the privilege of being able to practice their religion freely in this country. It was therefore profoundly special for the Lande family to have the opportunity to send their daughter, Leah, to Akiba Hebrew Academy from 1983-1989. Leah: “The six years that I spent at Akiba were among the most valuable of my life. We were taught, both in the classroom and through the actions of those around us, how to do the right thing and uphold our moral principles. As different situations arose, ethical behavior was modeled for us by our teachers, our parents, and our friends. We cared about the good of our community and were not focused only on ourselves. By learning to accept all different practices within Judaism, the pluralistic culture of the school helped us integrate with individuals of different ethnic and religious backgrounds when we entered college. Now as a physician, I know that medical school taught me medical knowledge and skills, but Akiba gave me the foundation to engage with my patients and colleagues in an empathetic, respectful and meaningful way. I am so grateful to have had the opportunity to attend Akiba, and I feel even luckier now to be able to give my children that same opportunity. I know that it will help to shape them into good human beings, and this is our most important goal for them. ”

Marc: “As a product of a public school education, I was hesitant about sending our kids to a private school. But as I have watched my daughter Jessie, now finishing her first year at Barrack, come home every day happy and engaged in her school community and in the world around her. I now understand that this school is giving her more than I could have ever imagined. It has been wonderful to watch her intellectual development over the course of this year. For example, in her Jewish Studies class, she learned about the Babylonian exile from the Jewish point of view, and in parallel, in her Core class, she learned about it from the Babylonian perspective. She is being taught to try to understand both sides of most issues, a skill that will serve her well in life. She is as challenged by her Hebrew and Jewish Studies classes as she is by her science and math classes, and she is excited about all that she is learning. Her friends are kind and supportive of each other, and her teachers hold her accountable for her actions in a firm and patient manner."

THE ELEMENTARY YEARS GIVE YOU A BASE OF LANGUAGE, PRAYER AND RITUAL BUT THE MIDDLE SCHOOL AND HIGH SCHOOL YEARS ARE WHAT HELP STUDENTS TO SET THEIR OWN IDENTITY AS JEWS. hen we moved to Allentown 16 years ago, I knew there was a day school that only went to 8th grade. That gave me 6 years to figure out how I was going to have my kids attend what was then Akiba for high school. Most people thought I was kidding. “How can a child commute that far?” My parents, however, never laughed at me. Instead, they encouraged me to believe that it could happen. I think my father always wished that he had graduated from Akiba, despite attending for only a brief time. After seeing my brother and me succeed there, he was determined to make it a possibility for Hannah and Ari to attend.

W

When my parents first told me that they wanted me to attend Akiba, I did not give it a lot of thought. My brother David was starting in 9th grade, so my going in 6th grade meant that we would be sharing the experience together. I had faculty that supported me, opportunities for sports and I had really wonderful friends. With only 12 students in my 6th grade that first year, it was the ideal size for a new environment. When the size of the class grew in 7th and 9th grades, Akiba became even more interesting. What I also realized was that while Akiba was incredibly accommodating to my lack of a day school background, attending Hebrew school at a young age had been inadequate. When I had children, I knew that I wanted to provide for them what my father and I did not have - a Jewish day school education that started in pre-school and ended with high school graduation. I know a lot of families feel that once the Bar/Bat Mitzvahs have passed, they no longer feel the need for a day school education. In my opinion that is when you want it the most. The elementary years give you a base of language, prayer and ritual but the middle school and high school years are what help students to set their own identity as Jews.

I take immense pride in the fact that my children, from the time they started preschool to graduation, will have had to think about being Jewish and what it means to them every single day. There is no magic bubble to protect our kids, but having a solid education and strong moral compass are imperative and Barrack gives that over and over again to each student. Every day in my work I am guided in some way by what I learned at Akiba and I am so mindful of how lucky we have been that Barrack has been able to provide the same for my children. At Barrack commencement exercises, there is a tradition of parents of graduates who are alumni themselves handing the diplomas to their children. There is no describing the emotion of being on the bimah to hand Hannah her diploma with my father, who himself was a Past President of the school, just as he had handed me mine when I graduated. When it is Ari’s turn to graduate next year we will miss my father being there but know that we have stayed the path that he valued so much.

The outstanding secular and Jewish curricula are one of the primary factors that drew us to Barrack. We decided to invest, because Jewish day school is an investment of both time and money, in the
