Highlights For the history lovers: Jazz At The Philharmonic 14th September, 3.30pm at Cadogan Hall, London Richard Pite’s Jazz Repertory Company continues its run of successful Sunday afternoon concerts at London’s Cadogan Hall with this celebration of the legendary Jazz At The Philharmonic. On 2nd July 1944 in Los Angeles, the American band leader, producer, record label founder and jazz impresario Norman Granz presented A Jazz Concert at the Philharmonic Auditorium - shortened by the printer of the concert posters to Jazz At The Philharmonic. Granz used a variety of well-known bands and singers including such jazz royalty as Oscar Peterson, Ella Fitzgerald, Lester Young and Charlie Parker. The concerts would always conclude with an impromptu jam session featuring all of the participating musicians. This formula proved an instant hit, lauded by both critics and jazz fans who further abridged the title of the concerts to JATP. The concert will be led by the band leader and master clarinettist Pete Long, who will present the concert in his own inimitably humorous way. The concert also features the celebrated saxophonist Ray Gelato and guest vocalists Nicola Emmanuelle and Georgina Jackson. Robert Mitchell’s Invocation suite to be premiered at the Saint Peter’s Church in Bournemouth This autumn Mitchell will be presenting his most striking and innovative project to date – Invocation. His first truly large-scale work, it is a unique cross-genre suite that perfectly blends the traditions of jazz, choral, classical and improvised music. Robert Mitchell says he composed the piece as a thank you

to inspirational teachers everywhere, each section of the piece a tribute to the lifelong guidance they provide, as well as a personal homage to several of my own teachers. Featuring Robert’s band Panacea with vocalist Deborah Jordan and Bournemouth Symphony Chorus, Goldsmiths Big String Ensemble and young music students from Avonbourne and Harewood colleges the piece will be performed for the first time in Bournemouth on 26th September (choral version). The full version will be performed during London Jazz Festival on 23rd November at Queen Elizabeth Hall. The experience will be one of a kind and will include visual projections with inspirational quotes – make sure you don’t miss out on that! Fife Jazz Club’s 6th Anniversary The club will celebrate its 6th Anniversary on 14th September with a Jazz Jamboree, happening at three venues in Queensferry: Albert Hotel, Ferrybridge Hotel and the Community Centre. Check out our listings for full info. Congratulations to the Club and happy celebrating! Dylan Howe’s Subterraneans - New Designs On Bowie’s Berlin Drummer Dylan Howe will be touring with his new, interesting project which is his own take on the instrumental cuts from the famed David Bowie’s Berlin albums Low and Heroes. The line-up for these gigs which promote the release of the new album Subterranean is stunning and apart from the leader on drums there will be Dave Whitford on double bass, Ross Stanley on piano, Steve Lodder on Suthesisers and Andy Sheppard on tenor saxophone. Check our listings to see if the band will be in your area this month.

Propaganda Swing show at the Belgrade Theatre in Coventry 13th – 27th September, evening & matinees Singers, Swastikas and All That Jazz! Featuring a cast of eight actor-musicians performing some of the greatest jazz music of the era, Propaganda Swing throws a spotlight on the gripping true story of ‘Charly and his Orchestra’. The show reveals the characters behind the story of how some of the greatest

German jazz musicians of the day entered into a Faustian pact with the Fascists – they could keep playing their beloved music at the price of seeing it corrupted for evil. The captivating combination of WWII intrigue and drama is set against a backdrop of glitz, glamour and Big Band swagger. www.belgrade.co.uk/event/propaganda-swing

On the Gigs cover: Partisans The band has earned a “cult” status since its formation in 1996. This was so to the unique fusion of New York swing, European improv and UK jam and the incredible vibe and rapport between the musicians, so notable when they play live. The band have recently participated in the Made in the UK concert series at the Xerox Rochester International Jazz Festival (organised in partnership with Jazz

Services) and then toured in the US and Canada, making a notable stop at the famed Dizzy’s Club in New York. They will be touring in the UK with Jazz Services support starting in September and throughout October and November. Co-led by two of the preeminent musicians of their generation, Phil Robson (guitars) and Julian Siegel (tenor sax and bass clarinet), the quartet line-up is completed by Thaddeus Kelly (bass) and Gene Calderazzo (drums). They are widely acknowledged as the godfathers of the new wave of British post-jazz and improv and they are releasing their fifth studio album this month. The new CD, entitled Swamp will be launched at the Jazz in the Round gig in London’s Cockpit Theatre on 29th September. This album is deeply rooted in the Partisan trademark vibe and sound, but completely blows open their already eclectic and unpredictable palette, taking their music to new heights as a result of their near 20 years together.
