Fumi

Okiji Fumi Okiji leads the Old Time Jazz Band, a fantastic group that combines the spirit of early blues and gospel influenced jazz with a contemporary take on that era’s sound. Their album Old Fashion was released in January, and the accompanying tour is supported by Jazz Services’ Rural Touring Support Scheme, provided in partnership with the National Rural Touring Forum. Fumi Okiji spoke to Jazz Services’ John Norbury-Lyons about the project. “My mother was a great singer”, recalls Okiji, speaking of her early introductions to music. “She had this piercing, direct and pure alto, quite unlike mine. She would sing spirituals and hymns as she went about her day. She is surely my first influence, although it’s probably taken me most of my life to realise it. My parents had us very education-focused and so TV was strictly forbidden for much of the week. We were allowed to watch a bit on Saturdays and when I was little they used to show those old MGM musicals which I loved, mainly because of all the singing and dancing. For ages, being in a film musical from the 1940s was my number one goal. It was only in my mid-teens, when I discovered Ella and Chet Baker, that I realised how tame Fred Astaire and Rita Heyworth’s rendition of ‘I’m Old Fashioned’ was!” Okiji came to jazz via a more rambunctious route. “I found jazz through Jimi Hendrix,” she explains. “I went through a Sixties phase, listening to Small Faces, the Beatles, the Stones

and the Kinks, as well as Hendrix. I wore out Axis: Bold as Love and a compilation of Hendrix’s blues, and this eventually led me to Bessie Smith and Ma Rainey. They were a short step to Billie Holiday and Dexter Gordon, the first jazz musicians that I really listened to.” A little after this Okiji started attending a community music workshop led by trumpeter Jim Dvorak. “It was a project in which we learnt Mingus tunes and freely improvised around them,” she says. “It was great, a really formative experience. I was taught to value space and silence, how to listen to the whole sound and how to focus on what I was attempting to convey. It taught me the importance of keeping hold of my voice and intention while making music communally. This set me on a path which I’m still following.” The experience

has stayed with her, too; “Mingus still means so much to me. I can’t listen to him without a lump in my throat.” The Old Time Jazz Band is most directly inspired by a fairly specific period in jazz’s history, and there’s obviously something special about the early days of jazz that appeals to and inspires Okiji’s musical drive. “I really love jazz,” she enthuses, “from its beginnings, when you don’t really know whether you should really be calling it blues or vaudeville, to its present forms. The free jazz and avantgarde of the late Fifties and the Sixties is perhaps what I enjoy most of all – Don Cherry, Ornette Coleman, late Coltrane, Art Ensemble of Chicago, Archie Shepp, Jeanne Lee and others. I’ve had the opportunity to sing in that freely improvised vein, with Black Top (Orphy Robinson and Pat Thomas), Noel Taylor, Olie Brice and others. Olie and I are at the beginnings of a duo exploring standards in a free way – something I’ve been wanting to do for a long time. As I mentioned earlier, Mingus is a massive influence on me, and I am currently working with Zac Gvi and Fred Thomas on a project of Mingus songs.” Okiji feels the connection between these periods is an important and interesting factor. “I hear a real affinity between some early jazz and the later free and avant-garde eras,” she says. “The blues feeling is important in both, the voice is celebrated. Musicians seem to use their instruments to speak or sing in a way that is certainly not lost in modern jazz but perhaps does not take pride of place. I love the experimentation with sound and texture the vocal, trumpet, harmonium trio of Bessie Smith, Louis Armstrong and Fred Longshaw on St. Louis Blues is surreal! Ellington is just brilliant in bringing the most distinctive of instrumentalists together, making something with such unity yet packed full of idiosyncrasies. These are things that draw me to that early era.” It’s not all rooted in the past, however. “Some of the tunes we perform are not really that early,” asserts Okiji. “Mount Harissa is a later Ellington/Strayhorn composition from the Far East Suite, ‘I’ll Look Around’ was written in the late Forties. Similarly, I’m not sure that standards such as I’m Old Fashioned and Sophisticated Lady can really be seen as ‘early jazz.’ But I think much of the later material we do, in the main, has that off-kilter, blues-imbued quality that much of the genuinely early stuff

that we do has.” The group came about through a series of personal connections as Okiji explains. “My partner, Ben Davis, got the band together – despite the name of the band, it is definitely not an autocracy! Ben had worked with Stuart, Idris and Roy in the past and thought as well as being fantastic players that they would great to work with, and bring their distinctive personalities and sense of fun in making the music.” Each of the players brings their own unique qualities to the proceedings, and Okiji is warmly enthusiastic about each of their contributions. “Stuart is such an amazing musician. He’s the agitator of the band which, I think, is the key to tackling the material that we do. While many of the tunes we perform cannot be described as tired (you don’t often hear Big Stuff, and West End Blues, while perhaps a staple in the Dixieland tradition, is not often sung), it is important to hear the tunes afresh and Stuart is without a doubt at the heart of all that.” “Ben has a really distinctive lyrical approach to improvisation,” she continues, “and this

also comes through in his comping which is often intertwined with what the others are doing. My voice, being so dark, is able to cut through more easily than when I sing with bass. The warm, woody sound created by the band is really important.” Having Idris on clarinet is, Okiji says, “like having another singer in the band. He effortlessly communicates with the

audience, really getting to the heart of what a tune is about. The blues is really important to me and listening to Idris makes me want to laugh and cry, often at the same time! He’s a great storyteller. And Roy is such a great drummer. Singers and drummers can sometimes have strained relations as, for some of us singers, a drummer is rarely too quiet! But working with Roy has shown me that, actually, it’s not all about volume.” One of the worries the band had on starting out was exactly how to tackle the material. “I was quite sure that I didn’t want to ‘update’ the material in a self-conscious way,” says Okiji, “by putting things in odd time signatures or reharmonization. On the other hand, we didn’t want it to be museum music either.” She wanted to get past the notion – one that probably comes to many creative singers - that singing standards was a bit of a cop-out, “and past the thought that said, ‘do your really think you can add anything more to what those great singers and musicians before you have already said?’ But actually once we started playing together all those doubts were dispelled. Our aim is to engage with the standard, and tell the story of the song (hopefully showing something new), rather than fulfil any obligation to update and refresh.” It’s probably fair to say the majority of Okiji’s contemporaries take their cue from a more ‘current’ place in jazz. Does she think there’s a risk of music from this era (as played by the OTJB) not being preserved by current musicians? “Well, people are starting to look again at early jazz,” she muses, citing Pigfoot (with Chris Batchelor, Liam Noble, Oren Marshall and Paul Clarvis), as “a fantastic band. But the great thing about jazz music is that it is an oral form in which the material is passed on through recorded sound. We don’t need to rely on our contemporaries or immediate predecessors to know about the Hot Fives and Sevens or Ethel Waters. We can find and listen for ourselves. Even if no-one wants to play or listen to this music today, the chances are someone will in the future thanks to records and CDs.” With the initial part of the tour completed in November, Old Fashion was released in midJanuary; as Okiji says, “we’d been playing together for two years and thought it was about time! We never rehearse, and working things through in performance is exciting if a little nerve-wracking. But that focus and adrena-

lin makes good music and finding a way to replicate that in the studio is what I find most challenging of anything I do. We recorded the album over a couple of days and tried to recreate something of a live performance, all of us in one room in an attempt to retain some of the spontaneity. I find recording stressful and I’m neither Zen nor experienced enough to rise above it all, but it was still the most fun I’ve ever had in a studio.” The Old Time Jazz Band’s Rural Tour continues in February (see dates below), and it seems to be an ideal forum for the group’s approach. “It’s been great to get the support from Jazz Services to tour the band for the first time. It’s near impossible to get music out to audiences across the country without some sort of funding and as a band without a released album that difficulty was compounded. Many of the venues are small and intimate spaces, and as we prefer to perform virtually acoustic it really suits us. It’s perhaps the most sustainable kind of help we could have got as we have made contact with venues and promoters we’ll hopefully be able to visit again in the future.” The Old Time Jazz Band’s Rural Touring Support Scheme dates continue throughout February and beyond, and the album Old Fashion is out now on Jes Grew Records.
