PETTALK

Man’s best friend is a term with no discrimination. Whether your dog is large or petite, obedient or a little rebellious, you love them just the same. The unparalleled companionship between a human and their deaf dog is no exception. It is a popular yet wildly misguided rumor that deaf dogs are unable to be a loving member of your family. Impossible to train, aggressive and unruly, and incapable of living a normal life are all stereotypes falsely attributed to deaf dogs. “Adopting any dog means that you are committing your family to providing a loving forever home,” said Dr. David Nelson, clinical associate professor and director of emergency services at the Texas A&M College of Veterinary Medicine & Biomedical Sciences. “The handicap is not the determinant of suitability, but rather the training and assimilation that you are going to undertake.” The biggest difference between a hearing dog and a deaf one is that you can’t use your voice to get the dog’s attention. Training a deaf dog is not necessarily harder than a hearing dog; it just requires a different approach. “One key point in their training is that if they are not looking at you, they can’t receive feedback and they don’t know you have information to provide,” said Nelson. “They have to learn sign language and body posture which needs to be consistently delivered, and, just like any other dog, you must not let them get away with bad behavior.” Another training technique helpful for communicating with your deaf pooch is to train them to respond to a vibrating collar. A push of the radio transmitter causes a vibration in the collar, and you can then condition your dog that this is a fantastic opportunity for a reward. After multiple positive rewards, their attention should turn towards you immediately after signaling, so you can then provide further instruction. Keep in mind that the vibration from the collar should never have a

negative connotation, or your dog will be afraid to respond in the future. Having them come to you without hesitation is extremely important, so always be sure to provide positive feedback. “We hike in the national forests with him off leash and he actually is easier to manage than the other dog who can hear just fine,” said Nelson about his own deaf dog. “We always have the safety net of the vibrating collar but rarely use it, and he has learned to check back visually and will come to a hand sign without delay.” Another common misconception of deaf dogs is that they are aggressive. This makes many people question whether it is safe to have a deaf dog in their home around children. “It is not deafness which determines suitability of a dog to be with children, but the personality of the dog, the child, and the home environment,” said Nelson. “Deafness does not mean that the dog is bad for this or that; the dog’s personality and the owners’ training determine those results.” Deaf dogs can be startled when touched unexpectedly, so establishing a “communication spot” that you touch when you need to wake them up is a good idea. “We have trained him that the top back of his head is the communication spot, and when we touch it and he is sleeping he immediately begins wagging his tail because he knows it is one of us,” said Nelson. Certain breeds of dogs, such as Dalmatians, carry a gene that causes deafness. If the deafness isn’t genetic, it is still common for a dog to lose hearing from an ear injury or simply from old age, just like people. Despite the few adaptations you must make for training and living with a deaf dog, the love and appreciation you receive far outweighs any perceived adversity from their disabilities. The friendship between a human and their dog, hearing or not, knows no boundaries. Pet Talk is a service of the College of Veterinary Medicine & Biomedical Sciences, Texas A&M University.

Washington Post, Aug. 2, 2013 – The 500L upshifts are smooth and swift and the Fiat’s modest body roll and vague steering give a clear handling edge. The 500L settles in for comfortable, low-assist stability that’s easy to manage. Cabin versatility adds to the appeal, and forward visibility is very good.

E D G E O F I N N O C E N C E Former NFL star relives his childhood coaching Pop Warner team

e might have been standing on the opposite sideline and on the opposite side of the ball but, football-wise, things have come full circle for former NFL All-Pro Edgerrin James. James began his illustrious football career as a kid playing Pop Warner for the Immokalee Braves at Gary Bates Stadium. It’s the same field he would later star for Immokalee High School. After 11 years in the NFL, mostly with the Indianapolis Colts, a Super Bowl and four Pro Bowls, James found himself on Saturday taking the gridiron once again at Gary Bates Stadium. Though James is the Miami Hurricanes all-time second leading rusher, it is with a new set of Hurricanes he finds himself involved with — the Naples Hurricanes’ Mighty Mite team. James is their coach. His son, Edgerrin Jr., is the team’s quarterback. James wanted the players to focus on today. But with everything around him, helplessly, James was caught up in yesterday. “Played right here,” said James, 35, who rushed for 12,246 yards and 80 scores in his NFL days. “The Immokalee Braves. Same field. Same everything.” Well, not everything was the same. The Braves have become the Seminoles, whom the Hurricanes played.

And instead of James standing on the Immokalee sideline, he was standing on the opposing one. “First time ever I went against anything Immokalee,” he said. “Wasn’t conflicted. I know all the kids. It’s youth football. It was actually really fun. My son never got the chance to see me play high school football, so he had a lot of questions. That was pretty cool.” James is finding coaching a team of 8-year-olds to be pretty cool indeed. With their 31-6 victory on Saturday, the Hurricanes have improved to 7-1. He’s having a ball watching the kids run double-reverses or even sometimes a no-huddle offense. “Edgerrin is one of the most devoted coaches we’ve ever had,” said Hurricanes athletic director Rich Koert. “He is completely devoted to the kids and our program. To see a great player like him do what he is doing sets an example for all youth coaches.” Youth football has changed dramatically since James’ playing days with the Braves. There are more leagues, more teams and more intensity. Youth players’ stats and combine times are now entered into national databases by scouting services and sold to high school and college programs. For some, youth football has become a moneymaking venture. James sees another downside.

By Scott Clair Citizen Correspondent

“Now, it’s just so many different leagues,” he said. “You don’t get the best of the best because all the talent is scattered about. When we played, you had to make the team.” From the pros to Pop Warner, another issue that runs throughout all levels of football is safety. Many parents are concerned about allowing their children to play a collision sport at such a young age. James allays those fears. “Once (parents) get informed and see what it takes, and if their kids are coached the right way, they’ll let their kids play, “ he said. “You just have to make sure the coaches are doing their part. “Sometimes adults are putting their personal feelings in and that can hurt the kids. As along as things are done the right way, it’s not a problem. When kids are taught the wrong way, that’s where there is a problem and that starts at youth football.” Regardless of the issues and concerns youth football faces, Saturday reminded James what the game is truly about. “My son is giving me a chance to relive it,” James said. “You don’t realize youth football is the funnest time in your life until you play at the highest levels. “I went to the highest levels of the game. I played in a Super Bowl. But, hands down, youth football is way better than that. That’s what I want these kids to find out.”

Like puzzles? Then you’ll love sudoku. This mind-bending puzzle will have you hooked from the moment you square off, so sharpen your pencil and put your sudoku savvy to the test!

Here’s How It Works:

Sudoku puzzles are formatted as a 9x9 grid, broken down into nine 3x3 boxes. To solve a sudoku, the numbers 1 through 9 must fill each row, column and box. Each number can appear only once in each row, column and box. You can figure out the order in which the numbers will appear by using the numeric clues already provided in the boxes. The more numbers you name, the easier it gets to solve the puzzle!

WHAT YOUR ORTHOPEDIC SURGEON DOES NOT WANT YOU TO KNOW... Paid Advertisement

An FDA Approved Treatment For Osteoarthritis That May Eliminate The Need For Total Knee Replacement Surgery Ostheoarthritis is one of the ten most disabling diseases in developed countries (WHO, 2012). Worldwide estimates are that 10% of men and 18% of women aged over 60 years have symptomatic osteoarthritis, including moderate and severe forms. It is estimated by the year 2030, 72 million Americans will be at high risk for osteoarthritis. As the general population ages, more and more baby boomers are opting for knee replacement surgery earlier in life. The reason being that boomers are more active than any previous generation. They want to continue playing their favorite sports, run and dance with the same level of intensity as they are used to. Previously, knee replacement surgeries were only preformed on very old patients who were crippled with osteoarthritis and severely hindering their daily activities. “Now patients in their 40s and 50s are experiencing an earlier onset of osteoarthritis that affects their daily lives,” says J. David Blaha, M.D., an orthopedic surgeon at the University of Michigan Health System. In fact, the number of boomers opting to go under the knife for early knee replacement is growing at an alarming rate. One major concern for orthopedic surgeons is the longevity of the knee implant. Due to the fact that most joint replacements have been performed primarily on older patients, there isn’t a lot of data to show how these implants hold up in younger people, who will engage in more activities and have them over longer periods of time. Even though Orthopedic surgeons are using newer and better materials and techniques, they remain dubious about their improvement in durability. They are uncertain how the knee replacements will hold up over time, especially since some plastics used have only been out there for several years. Younger knee replacement patients may need to get a new replacement in as little as 5 to 10 years, which is a concern. “It gets more complicated with each revision,” says Michael R. Baumgaertner, M.D., professor of orthopedic surgery at Yale University School of Medicine. “Every time it has to be redone, there is more bone loss.” What Is Knee Replacement Surgery? A total knee replacement surgery, is a medical procedure designed to replace weight-bearing surfaces of a knee joint. The surgeon cuts away bone, cartilage and ligaments of a diseased knee-joint, and replaces them with an artificial joint made of an alloy of cobalt, chrome or titanium, and a plastic compound called polyethylene. The entire surgery typically takes 2 to 3 hours without any complications. However, recovery from total knee replacement surgery is bound to take much longer.

“It appears that surgeons are more satisfied than patients after total knee replacement.” In a United States study, a third of patients were dissatisfied with their operation 6 to 12 months later.

How Long Is Recovery From Surgery? There are several factors that influence your recovery, such as, your age, medical history, level of fitness and the severity of the problem. Once the surgery is complete, your doctor will keep you under observation in the hospital for around 3 days. Most patients experience severe pain after knee replacement surgery. In fact, for the next two weeks or so, you’ll need to use a cane or a walker in order to move about. Your activities will be kept to a minimum during this time, since you cannot exert too much force on your knee. Many still experience pain during this time, and must resort to using painkillers in order to find relief. The duration of pain differs for each person but doctors claim you will find natural relief within 3 months of surgery with ongoing physical therapy. How Much Does Surgery Cost? The United States has among the highest costs in the world for knee replacement surgery. An American with no health insurance can expect to pay $45,000 $70,000 at a typical hospital. Even with insurance, there are still costly deductible and co-pays that must be paid. FACTOR

What Are The Long Term Effects, Ye ars After Surgery? The following are some facts that you should consider before undergoing knee replacement surgery: • Kneeling may be problematic. It can hurt to put weight on metal knees, even on a cushion, making activities like gardening a challenge. • Falling or banging an artificial knee can hurt a lot more and last far longer than you might expect. • Going down steep steps can be difficult and may require using a sideways, onefoot approach. This is because a normal knee bends at an angle of 145 degrees, but replaced knees often achieve only 120 degrees, if that. Sitting on the floor crosslegged may be impossible. • Despite months of physical therapy and the passage of time, residual discomfort may still be experienced. • Since most artificial knees are metal, they may set off the security alarm at airports, requiring a personal scan with a wand. • Some patients require a surgical revision within two years ofa replacement because of technical problems like instability or poor alignment of the new joint.

What are the disadvantages of surgery? • Infection: An infection can occur a few weeks after the surgery or even a few years later. Infections are serious complications that may require the implants to be removed followed by weeks of antibiotic treatment. • Stiffness: After surgery, your body naturally produces a scar. When the ligaments around the knee contract, the tissues around the knee joint begin to tighten up. This makes it extremely difficult for you to do things that requires you to bend your knee, such as, sitting down and using stairs. It the stiffness continues for prolonged periods of time, your doctor may have to place you under anesthesia again to break up the scar tissue. • Blood Clots: Blood clots are the most common complication of this type of surgery. The clots can form in the veins in your leg and pelvis after surgery. If they remain there it is usually not much of a problem, but it is possible for them to travel through the heart and to the lungs. This leads to a condition known as pulmonary embolism, which is potentially fatal if not treated promptly. • Loosening: Some implants last longer than others, but all of them eventually wear out and loosen. This is a common problem experienced by younger patients because they live longer and usually stress the implanted joint more. The followup surgery to repair the implant is more complicated and will further decrease the lifespan of the implant. It’s about MORE than JUST Knee Pain “I have had two knee replacements with no results! I still have pain on the knee and it is always swollen. It is difficult to even go down a stair because i can’t bend my knee properly. It’s been almost 5 years since my last surgery, and I am still having problems with my knee to the point that I went back to my orthopedic surgeon and he said there was nothing he could do. I don’t think anyone should live with pain! I am 52 years old and am disabled due to the horrible knee pain.” - Nora B. Knee replacement surgery is not a quick fix, and it is not without risks. Serious complications, such as blood clots and infections, can occur. In addition, the road to recovery can be difficult and time consuming, particularly with joint replacement surgery. If you or a loved one are considering or scheduled for knee replacement surgery, all you have to do is call (239) 687-2165 right now and ask for your “NO-COST, NOOBLIGATION Knee Pain Screening” During this consultation you can get all of your questions answered in a warm and friendly environment. Once complete, you will know exactly what your treatment options are and ifHyalgan therapy and our specialized rehab program is right for you.

Knee Pain Does Not Mean You Need Knee Replacement Surgery A person with knee pain knows how often it gets in the way of doing the things they want and need to do in daily life. Because the knee is a weight bearing joint, knee pain affects almost everything we do that requires mobility, including those things most of us have usually taken for granted. For many knee pain makes it hurts to walk, stand, stoop, get out of a chair, or to go up or down stairs. Additionally, routine activities of living, work, social and recreational activities are often inhibited, restricted or avoided because of knee pain. If you have been suffering from constant or intermittent knee pain that just won’t go away no matter how much ibuprofen you take, don’t worry - there is another option. If you have tried other treatments and experienced little to no relief, you may still be a candidate for our treatment Program. Call (239) 687-2165 to schedule a nocost, noobligation consultation today! At Physicians Rehabilitation, it’s very important to understand we are not just addressing knee pain. Our goal is to give you the best chance we possibly can of

Preventing Knee Replacement Surgery in the future, which is what knee arthritis frequently evolves into if left undetected and unaddressed. For this reason, we encourage you to schedule an appointment to determine if you are a candidate for the Hyalgan treatment for knee arthritis, you can always have more radical procedures performed later, if necessary. However, with knee replacement surgery, once done there is no turning back to a more conservative approach. Knee replacement surgery is indeed necessary for some people with extreme conditions that Hyalgan is unable to help, but as we have seen with many of our patients... A Total Knee Replacement is a Very Extreme Measure To Take without considering all your options for a condition as common as knee arthritis. What are Hyalgan Injections? Hyalgan injections treat knee osteoarthritis. Hyaluronic Acid (Hyalgan) is a natural substance extracted from rooster combs and purified to mimic the lubricating substances that occur naturally in the joint called synovial fluid. When Hyalgan is injected into the knee, it provides replacement for diseased synovial fluid,

which is the cause of your pain. Hyalgan specifically targets the osteoarthritis in your knee. Unlike over the counter oral medications or non-steroidal antiinflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) that affect all parts of your body. What’s the Process? It’s a very easy and quick process: Our Doctors will inject Hyalgan directly into your knee joint using a high tech medical device called a Fluoroscope to pinpoint the exact location intended with extreme accuracy, which provides the best possible outcome from each injection. Then, an injection of dye confirms needle placement to ensure that the pain relieving drug Hyalgan reaches the knee capsule where it bonds with the naturally occurring joint fluid to create a lubricating and cushioning layer. That’s why if you have tried any type of pain reduction injection elsewhere without success we may still be able to assist you as your original injection may have never wound up in just the right place. Most patients compare the treatment to getting a flu shot and report little pain or discomfort. When will I feel results? Most feel an immediate reduction in pain and return to normal activities in weeks.

Avoid Unnecessary Surgery! This FDA-approved treatment is proven to relieve knee pain, while eliminating the need for surgery. Treatment is safe, easy, and covered by most insurance companies, including Medicare.

Will my insurance cover this treatment? Yes, most major insurances and Medicare will pay for this treatment. What Are Other People Saying About It? “My knee feels great. I had already had a total knee replacement and wanted to try something rather than go through another painful surgery. After completing the program, I can now dance again which I have not done in years, and my lifestyle is on its way back to normal!” - Elizabeth B. So what are you waiting for? Pick up the phone and call us today to schedule your NOCOST,

NO-OBLIGATION, consultation. The demand for this procedure has been overwhelming. We’ve added extra lines to accommodate your calls, so ifour line is busy, or you are re-directed to voice mail, please leave a message or call back.
