Curt Clawson wins, calls for unity in victory speech

After months of bitter campaigning, Bonita Springs Republican Curt Clawson used his victory speech to call for unity among Southwest Florida Republicans, a hope echoed by his opponent Lizbeth Benacquisto. “I’ve learned about the underside of campaigning. It was personal. It was dishonest. It was not a competition of ideas and it was wrong,” he said to a crowd of about 150 supporters Tuesday night at the Hyatt Regency Scott McIntyre/Staff Coconut Point Resort in Bonita Curt Clawson celebrates along with a cheering crowd at his election party. Springs. “It was ambition over truth, ratings over legitimacy. But we are past this. I took the arrows and I am past this. This is over, OK?” Clawson won the special congressional District 19 Republican primary with 26,710 votes, or about 38 percent of the vote in Collier and Lee counties. Clawson came out on top in both counties. Clawson has been a full-time Bonita Springs resident since 2011. The former Purdue basketball player was the chief executive officer at Hayes Lemmerz, a wheel manufacturer. He retired from the company in recent years and took hits throughout the campaign for his decisions, including closing plants, during his tenure at the company. Four Republicans – Benacquisto; Clawson; Michael Dreikorn of Bokeelia; and Paige Kreegel of Estero and Punta Gorda – were vying for their party’s nomination in the special Republican primary. Florida Gov. Rick Scott set the election in January after Trey Radel, R-Fort Myers, resigned. His resignation came just two months after he pleaded guilty to a possession of cocaine charge in a Washington, D.C., courtroom.

$150 million Powerball ticket sold at Golden Gate Estates store

Is there a $150 million lottery winner living somewhere in Golden Gate Estates? There’s a good chance there is. Someone purchased the winning Powerball ticket at E’s Country Store off at Immokalee Road and Oil Well Road, according to the Florida Lottery. The winner has not yet come forward. The winning numbers are 19-25-29-36-48 and the Powerball is 12. The store will receive $60,000 for selling the jackpot-winning ticket. This is Florida’s eighth Powerball jackpot winner since joining the game in 2009, including a record-setting $590.5 million jackpot.

The National Association of Letter Carriers’ food drive will be Saturday, May 10. Collier County residents will participate for the 22nd year. Collier Harvest, a local nonprofit group which delivers food overages and donations to area agencies, will head up the drive. Residents and visitors are asked to leave unopened perishable canned food and dry goods next to their mailbox or in their complex’s mail room. The postal workers will pick up the donations. After months of controversy, Marco Island City Council agreed Monday to let residents decide whether the city should spend up to $3.5 million for a new Mackle Park Community Center that would be more than doubled in size. Council voted 5-2, with councilors Larry Sacher and Chuck Kiester opposing, to hold a voter referendum to ask residents if the city should build a new community center, up to 16,000 square feet, to replace the one built 27 years ago. If residents vote no, the city will be left with an old, leaking, 6,500-square-foot building that’s isn’t large enough to accommodate current demand. The vote will be placed on the Aug. 26 primary ballot. The approval prompted applause from residents sitting in the audience at the community center, including

Parks & Recreation committee members who said they worked hard on the project and urged council to send it to a public referendum. The vote came after some on council debated whether the project was ready for a referendum. “We’re abdicating our responsibility to make the tough decisions that we were voted in for,” Kiester said. “It’s a matter of principle for me. I was elected to make decisions for the people and not throw everything to a referendum.” Sacher contended a 9-foot ceiling was “grossly inadequate” for a meeting room and urged a delay until there were more details. Councilor Amadeo Petricca said the project was presented as a referendum and said residents should make the final decision. “That’s what the people wanted,” Petricca said, adding that he wanted more details about furniture, equipment and landscaping before submitting it to the

county supervisor of elections. “I just think we’re rushing in and we still have a little bit of time.” County Supervisor of Elections Jennifer Edwards has told council she needs the referendum wording six weeks before the election. “Let the citizens speak,” Councilor Larry Honig told council. “It’s very clear what we’re asking the citizens for.” Since the community center was built, records show, Marco Island’s full-time population has doubled to 16,000 residents and is now ranked the 2014 Traveler’s Choice for best island by TripAdvisor. All of the six speakers, except one who cited the hefty price tag, urged council to send it to a referendum. Committee member Litha Berger called the community center “an embarrassment” and urged quick action, noting lending rates won’t get any better. “You have to do this,” Berger urged council. “The seven of us are going to bug

the devil out of you. Pass it. We’re tired of waiting around.” Early estimates for heavy renovations came in at between $500,000 and $700,000. That included gutting the building, adding a new roof, air conditioning, wiring, and upgrades to meet current codes, including Americans with Disabilities Act compliance. But that still would have left the city with an old building not big enough to expand class and meeting offerings.

In other business Council voted to amend the review and approval process for site development plans and site improvement plans to now include the city manager, planning board and council as part of the approval process. Council also voted to postpone discussion and a vote on the controversial Marriott expansion PUD to its May 5 meeting and to start a half-hour earlier, at 5 p.m. due to the large crowds expected.

Budget ‘kickoff’

City manager unveils debt-ending, five-year plan at 2015 workshop By Cheryl Ferrara Eagle Correspondent

here were a lot of “ifs” in the equation, but Marco Island City Manager Roger Hernstadt and Finance Director Guillermo Polanco presented a budget proposal that would eliminate the city’s debt within five years. The plan had city councilors intrigued as they met Wednesday for their first 2015 budget session. The “kickoff” workshop did not address the city’s utilities budget, which will be discussed in a separate session in May. The presentation focused on six of the general fund’s capital expenses. It also proposed revenue increases to cover their costs. To make the proposal work, council will need to increase millage rates by 10 percent annually over the next five years

based on the roll-back rate and the assumption that assessed values will increase two percent per year. For example, Polanco calculated the 2015 millage rate would need to increase to 2.11 from the current rate of 1.96. That equates to $60 more in taxes in the first year for a Marco Island home valued at $500,000, said Council Chairman Ken Honecker after the meeting. Subsequent years would also require 10 percent increases to make the plan work. The payoff would come within the five-year period. The city could cover its unfunded liabilities, return to repairing streets and drainage, replace city vehicles, build a new Community Center at Mackle Park, pending voter approval, and cover capital improvements through 2019. The Smokehouse Bridge was part of the plan, receiving $2.8 million out of reserves, but requiring a loan to be paid back over 15 years. An initial low

bid of $7,625,327 for bridge construction did not include landscaping and other potential costs. The amount of the loan will be determined once all costs have been negotiated. “In five years, the unfunded liabilities would be taken care of, if everything remains the same,” said Hernstadt. He also told council the plan would maintain city assets and replace vehicles on a 10-year cycle. Unfunded liabilities include fire and police pension plans, $672,047 and $3,424,270 respectively, and other postemployment benefits for city employees of $2,048,291. Councilor Larry Honig called it a highly aggressive proposal. Hernstadt reassured him that the plan was do-able with the right conditions. “We have to work as a three legged stool – city, council and public – to stick to the plan,” he said. See Budget, 8A

a bugler’s call Tradewinds and ‘Taps’ at sunset By Don Manley Eagle Correspondent

he moments just before sunset are a special time at the Tradewinds Apartments of Marco Island. That’s when residents gather in the high rise’s beachside courtyard, socializing as the sunlight wanes and they await what’s become a weekday tradition there – the playing of “Taps” by a lone bugler. As the sun meets the horizon, the festive atmosphere turns reverential, with the military hymn’s somber strains wafting up and down the beach, echoing off the Tradewinds and the high rises that flank it on either side, the Admiralty House and the Emerald Beach. The playing of “Taps” at sunset has been a seasonal custom at the Tradewinds for the last eight years, said Ken Porcaro, a Boston resident who has spent winters there for the last decade. “Ah, we love it,” said Porcaro. “It’s a symbol of our national unity and people just love it.” While some residents congregate in the courtyard, others at the Tradewinds take in the proceedings from their balconies, as do residents at the Admiralty House and the Emerald Beach. As the last notes drift from the horn, their sound is replaced by the applause of onlookers. This is the first year that the man who began the tradition, World War II veteran and Illinois resident Hugh DeSamper, has not been present to handle the bugling chores. Porcaro explained that DeSamper’s health prevented him from traveling to Marco this winter. Stepping in for him is Frank Berry, an Ontario resident who is spending his second winter at the Tradewinds. Berry told DeSamper last season that he was looking forward to playing echo “Taps” – two buglers who start the song one after another – with him this year.

“Hugh didn’t come back this year and I was really disappointed by that,” said Berry. “But the folks here said maybe I could do a little bit of playing. So that’s what I’ve been doing and I’ve added ‘Amazing Grace’ at the end and folks seem to enjoy that.” Berry, 74, accomplishes the task with a coronet that he bought when he was 18 for $105. The retired high school English teacher began playing the instrument when he was in 10th grade and continued it as a hobby throughout his adult life. His only connection to the military is two maternal uncles, one of them his namesake, who served in the Canadian army during World War I. Both were killed and are buried in Belgium. “That inspired me,” said Berry. “I found out where they’re buried and do you know that every night, they play ‘Taps’ at the gate of that cemetery and they’ve been doing it since 1928. We are the recipients of the price those men paid and the sacrifices they made.” Frank Berry’s wife Esther said continuing the Tradewinds tradition is an honor for her husband. “It’s quite a humbling experience (for him) to be able to play and to have the people stand at attention because that song is very meaningful for a lot of folks,” she said. “He was pretty nervous the first few times, but with all the support he’s received, I think we’re feeling pretty special about all of this.” The tradition has served to heighten the sense of community at Tradewinds, according to Jim and Gigi Lyng, who spend part of the year in Saratoga, N.Y. “It gives us a reason to come down in the evening to perhaps share a cocktail or perhaps share a story or two,” said Gigi Lyng. “We’re here and excited to hear ‘Taps’ at night, that’s our excuse. But it’s much more far-reaching than ‘Taps.’ ” Frank Berry left for Canada in early March but plans to return next year for another rendition of “Tap” at sunset.

Perpetuating the war on poverty Wars are generally short in duration, usually just a few years. But historically, there have been some wars that lasted a long time; the Hundred Years War, for example, was a conflict between England and France that Money lasted from 1337 to 1453. $marts In the modern era, the GERALD Cold War, fought without KRAMER armies slaughtering each other, lasted 46 years, from the end of World War II (1945) to the breakup of the Soviet Union (1991). Here in the United States, we have another long lasting war, the war on poverty, declared by President Lyndon Johnson in 1964 and initiated with a series of government support programs aimed at lowering the poverty rate then at 19 percent of the population. Fifty years later, government anti-poverty efforts have ballooned to 80 means tested welfare programs that provide cash, food, housing, medical care and other social services to Americans classified as “in poverty.” The government spent $916 billion in 2012 providing aid to 100 million Americans, each receiving an average of $9,000. Robert Rector, in a recent Wall Street Journal article that analyzed state and federal welfare spending, found that current welfare spending “adjusted for inflation is 16 times greater than 1964. If converted to cash, current means tested spending is five times the amount needed to eliminate all official poverty in the U.S.” In other words, all poverty in the U.S. could be eliminated by sending cash directly to those in need and we would save 80 percent of current welfare spending. But it’s not in the interest of politicians to eliminate government programs no matter how wasteful. Too many bureaucrats and government workers have a vested interest in maintaining the status quo. What they have created over the past 50 years is dependency that undermines the unique characteristics of a successful American society: responsibility, accountability and equal opportunity. Such dependency created by simply handing out money actually perpetuates poverty by ignoring the fundamental cultural factors that promote poverty.

Studies have indicated three behaviors that serve to eliminate personal poverty. The first is a full time job — any job — and learning the responsibilities of work for pay. The second is delaying marriage. Individuals putting off marriage until out of their teenage years ultimately escape poverty. The final factor is the postponing of having children until your early 20’s. The current anti-poverty mentality focuses on none of these. Indeed, the structure of the programs actually undermines these behaviors. Why work when you can receive more in benefits than a starting job will pay? People receiving benefits thus never have the opportunity to rise above their dependency status. Moreover, family structure disintegrates as men without jobs and lacking self sufficiency don’t marry but have children out of wedlock. Women who bear these children know that they will receive government payouts and raise the children without active father involvement. The number of children born out of wedlock has increased from 6 percent in 1963 to 41 percent today. Children raised in single parent homes are four times more likely to be living in poverty than children of married parents. The current “war” on poverty policies are simply perpetuating the war.

A chemical spill in an East Naples CVS pharmacy sent six employees to local hospitals Wednesday night, according to East Naples/Golden Gate Fire Control and Rescue District Assistant Fire Chief J. Nolan Sapp. “We received a complaint about employees suffering from respiratory difficulties, a metallic taste in their mouths and they thought it was a gassy substance of some type was released in the store,” Sapp said. “What we believe happened was a spill of some compounds in which they make medicine.” Sapp said employees of the CVS, 6800 Collier Blvd., had been working in an area where the chemical compound was spilled when they began feeling ill. Firefighters received the call around 5 p.m. The spilled chemical, which was not identified, is used to make antibiotics and is meant to be take orally, not inhaled, according to Sapp. “So as they’ve been working and stirring that up – it’s almost like a dust-type situation – they’ve inhaled that and aggravated their respiratory system,” Sapp said. The employees transported to local hospitals suffered no major injuries, according to Sapp. “To our knowledge they’re all OK and will probably be released,” Sapp said. “We’ve not received any other information otherwise.”

Rep. Dane Eagle, 30, was arrested shortly before 2 a.m. Monday after he pulled out of a Taco Bell about two miles from the state Capitol, Tallahassee police officer David Keller said in his arrest report. Keller says he watched as Eagle, R-Cape Coral, tried to make a left turn from the parking lot and almost struck a concrete median in his path. Keller says Eagle then stopped at a red light but went across the stripe in the street. He then made a U-turn and almost hit the curb, the report says. Eagle then drove 45 mph in a 35 mph zone, struck a curb and ran a red light before he was stopped, police said. Keller says he smelled alcohol on Eagle’s breath and his eyes were bloodshot, but the state representative denied drinking. He says that when he asked Eagle to walk back to his patrol car, he stumbled and fell against his SUV. Keller says that when he asked Eagle about the alcohol smell, the legislator again denied drinking and said it came from friends who were in the car earlier. Keller says Eagle refused to take a field sobriety test and said he was “good to get home.” Keller arrested Eagle, who later refused to take a breath test. Eagle was released after being charged with driving under the influence. In a statement released Tuesday, Eagle said that “while there are some decisions that I would have made differently,” he does not think Keller’s report “is a complete and accurate picture of the events.” He said that he could not explain further on the advice of his attorney, but would at a later time. Eagle, a real estate broker, was elected to the House in 2012. The Florida Legislature is in the final two weeks of its annual session.

The cost of ownership By now it is no secret that there are costs associated with living in paradise. Purchase prices, flood insurance, etc., are only the tip of the iceberg. As wonderful as life is here, there are unavoidable costs of ownership. Money Another perspective Talks takes us back to the real WILLIAM estate boom bust nearly 10 HAGUE years ago now. There are any of a number of costs associated with home ownership; among them is taxes and insurance. I know, I know, cash buyers can self insure, but by golly they sure as heck can’t “self tax” their properties. Not only is the math quite simple, it can be quite startling as well. Consider the fact that taxes and insurance are approximately one percent of the purchase price, no not the “post crash” values, but the price paid by the owner; and taxes never go away. Consider the “Johnny come lately” who was the third or forth buyer of an “investment property” during a six month period. Yes, the one who paid top dollar just before the crash. Well, consider that the $1,000,000 “investment property” accrued an annual cost of ownership from taxes and insurance alone of around $20,000 per year. Never mind any repairs, sewer hook up costs, etc., along the way. Fast forward out 10 years and this mislead investor has accrued an extra $200,000 towards the cost of ownership. Yes, I know, the hole just keeps getting deeper and deeper. Remember the number one rule about holes … once you’re in one … stop digging. The concept of breaking even after 10 years is the same whether it is the stock market or real estate. The costs of living, goods and services etc., has only gone up over the last decade, right? Well, this little factoid called inflation never goes away and just because you don’t see it reported in the daily newscast, doesn’t mean it’s not there. So, if we factor in the cost of inflation over the decade as well as taxes paid along the way on top of the fact that the monies that sat idle for 10 years could have readily been repositioned elsewhere for perhaps a better and quicker opportunity to grow, we can begin to see, although begrudgingly so, that breaking even after a decade is all but nearly impossible.

Get a load of this “doozy” of an example on cost of ownership. Perhaps one of the most expensive investment vehicles available is known as a variable annuity readily available from your local dart thrower, which of course indicates they are subject to market loss. Now, keep in mind that there are many types of annuities; however the variable, as the name states, is variable in value meaning it moves up and down with the market. They are layered with insurance so that your beneficiaries will receive the original investment if you pass the assets while down in value. In other words, it does nothing for you while you are alive, and simply guarantees return of principle after you are gone ... but wait, it gets better. Speaking of cost of ownership, the layering of fees in these accounts is nothing shy of staggering from a money management standpoint. Let’s look closer; there are the underlying mutual fund management fees. I know, they are nearly impossible to find, but rest assured, they never go away. There are also administrative and advisory fees. Remember, they must also insure the account in the event that you die while it is down 50 percent in value. Some of these variable accounts with layered fees can be as high 4.75 percent … annually. No, that is not a typo, 4.75 percent payable annually whether you make money or not. Just to be clear, that would cost $4,750 per $100,000 in portfolio value. You can do the math and remember; this fee comes out in both good times and bad. Wow, talk about the cost of ownership … and by the way; the numbers never lie. Educated investors can avoid most if not all annual management fees and still insure their assets against market losses and even the ravages of inflation with guaranteed minimum returns. The lessons of the frog and toad — warts and all

hey say if you put a frog and a toad on a tabletop, they will both hop. The toad will stop at the table’s edge and sit there. But the frog will leap off. I don’t know who “they” are who say this, but apparently it’s true. Some lady wrote about it in a book a hundred years ago, and then some other guy read the book and tried it and got the same results, and then he wrote about it. I don’t know who that guy was, though, either. Some other “they.” But anyway, that’s what they all say. Frogs will leap off the edge of a table. Toads will sit and blink at the unknown. I hesitate to tell you this, because ever since I heard about tabletop frogs and toads I haven’t been able to get the image out of my head. And now I’ve gone and put it into your head. Sorry. I hope you’ll accept my apology, but just so you know, I’m going to keep talking about it for the rest of this article. You can stop reading now and frog-hop to another page. Or you can stay toadly put. Still here? Well, don’t say I didn’t warn you. In the first place, I can’t help but wonder what those frogs and toads were doing on the tabletop in the first place. Was the lady testing them for courage, or problemsolving ability or recklessness? Or did she just live in the kind of house where uninvited amphibians showed up next to the salt and pepper at breakfast time? If she put them there intentionally to see what they would do, I have to wonder what kind of sick person would put a poor frog and toad through this kind of ordeal. And then I wonder where I can get hold of a frog and toad to try it myself. Even if it turns out to be true, I wouldn’t know what to make of the results. After all, sometimes it seems that the whole point of being human is to look at the natural world around us and then to find some moral principle in the analogy. If this had happened on Aesop’s breakfast table, he would have written some instructive fable about it by lunchtime. Because, as Kurt Vonnegut once said, “Fish got to swim, bird got to fly, man got to wonder: Why? Why? Why?” Ask a teenager what lesson he gleans from the frog and toad and he’ll leap with the frog any day. “Sure. Why

not? Take a chance. Anyplace is better than here. Jeez, are you still singing that old song? It’s so 2013. I’m sick of this old iPad I got for Christmas — time to dump it and try something else.” Teens are leapers by nature. Swing by any emergency room during spring break and listen to adolescents tell the tale of how they got there. Frogs, every one of them.

But anyway, that’s what they all say. Frogs will leap off the edge of a table. Toads will sit and blink at the unknown. But once past middle age, as our sleek and shiny skin grows craggy and dry, we croak a different tune. “Well, I guess this old house, job and marriage aren’t so bad. I could do a lot worse. I haven’t changed brands of toothpaste, deodorant or shampoo in decades, so why start now? Put down that TV remote — ‘I Love Lucy’ is coming on, and…Ooh, I love this episode.” By the time Medicare kicks in, most of us are fully toadified, tethered to whatever tabletop we find ourselves squatting upon.

Or maybe the lesson of frogs and toads has nothing to do with what stage of life we are in. Maybe it’s a business model. Any toad will tell you that change is bad, because they don’t make things like they used to. Typewriters used to last a lifetime. These new computers break down if you look at them funny, and they cost more to repair than to replace. Why can’t manufacturers just leave well enough alone? Yeah, the frog will answer, but how many of your old cars made it to 100,000 miles without the fenders and doors falling off from rust? And it’s kind of nice to walk around with a phone that’s also a camera and a calendar, without trailing a coiled cord behind you, right? Change is good. Or maybe the frogs and toads are trying to tell us important lessons about politics. Any frog in his right mind will tell you that this current crop in Congress isn’t getting the job done. Anybody would be better than them, right? Well, not so fast, say the toads. That’s what we said about the last Congress that we threw out when we put these guys in office. And after all, these guys are just trying to clean up the mess that those last guys made. Give them time. Or maybe it’s religion. The frogs will tell you that eternal bliss can only be attained by leaving this plane of existence with a leap of faith. The toads will say there is no fairy land at the end of that leap — only gravity. I don’t know. As I say, I’m sorry for bringing all this up. Now you’ll probably lose sleep over it, too, counting squatting frogs and leaping toads in your troubled dreams. Or, like me, maybe you’ll lie awake at night wondering where you can get a frog and a toad to see if it’s true what everybody says about them.

More and more frequently, hotels and other accommodations are selling themselves as pet friendly. The truth of the matter is that if businesses want to encourage four-legged guests and their people to come through their doors, they have to do more than just allow pets to stay in their establishment. TripsWithPets.com recently conducted a survey asking their site visitors and pet travel club members what pet friendly accommodations they considered compelling enough to book a stay in a hotel. The results speak volumes about the small things the industry can do to earn the loyalty of pet parents.

1. Low or no pet fee Everyone loves a good deal, and pet lovers are no exception. Those traveling with pets are more likely to book a room at a pet friendly accommodation where pets either stay for free, or for a very reasonable pet fee. Those surveyed noted that high pet fees or pet “cleaning” fees send them looking elsewhere. 2. Doggie welcome gift Pet parents love it when their pets are welcomed with open arms, and nothing says “we’re glad you’re here” like some delectable dog treats, a ball, or a chew toy. Being greeted at check-in with a thoughtful gift for Fido goes a long way toward winning the hearts (and bookings) of those folks who traveling with their fourlegged kids. 3. A paper concierge Imagine, as a pet lover, checking into a pet friendly hotel or accommodation and being handed a “paper concierge” with all of the relevant pet information you could ever need while you’re in town, like local vets, pet spas, dog parks, pet

Many otherwise pet friendly hotels and accommodations only have a few patches of grass in the parking lot available for dogs to do their business. Or, their pets are relegated to a spot way in the back of the hotel that they have to share with smokers. A designated dog potty area, complete with waste bags and receptacles, is a must for people traveling with pets.

5. A clean room It’s unfortunate, but true. Those traveling with pets arrive at so-called pet friendly hotels, only to find themselves consigned to smoking rooms or stinky, unkempt rooms. Their frustration is understandable – they’re paying just as much and often times more as other guests for a room, and they’d like to get an equally clean and hygienic room. To put it simply ... if hotels and accommodations would like to earn a spot in the hearts of pet lovers, they need to take down the “pets allowed” sign, and roll out the welcome wagon.

Repeal appeal With each new revelation of the problems of the IRS, it becomes more imperative that a remedy be found for this mammoth problem with our tax system. The House Ways and Means Committee has proposed the first comprehensive tax reform effort in 27 years. Members deserve credit for their hard work and good intentions, but it doesnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t go far enough. The place to start is repealing the 16th Amendment. It is not as far-fetched as it sounds. In fact there is a bill in Congress right now that would do exactly that. It was introduced by sponsors representing people of all socio-economic backgrounds and states from across the country. Thereâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s effectively no oversight of the IRS. The agency writes its own regulations and then decides how to enforce them. The 16th Amendment is a product of the progressive era â&#x20AC;&#x201C; as was another big idea of the time, prohibition. And as we did the prohibition, itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s time to repeal the 16th Amendment. We didnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t need to agree on how to regulate alcohol before repealing the 18th Amendment ending prohibition. There are many ways to fund the federal government without income taxes and we donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t need to agree on the solution before we address the root problem â&#x20AC;&#x201D; the 16th Amendment.

Bernard Johnson | M arco Island Opposes senate resolution 410 I join members of the Pax Turcica Institute of America to strongly oppose senate resolution 410 recently introduced in Congress. Millions of Ottoman citizens of ethnic Turkish, Kurdish, Armenian, and other backgrounds perished in World War I. But as stated by then-Secretary of State Hillary Clinton in 2012, the assessment of these atrocities is a matter of an unbiased scholarly debate. In fact, a genuine healing would only arise from mutual acknowledgment of the shared tragic history. Unfortunately, SR 410 co-sponsored by Senators Robert Menendez (D-NJ) and Barbara Boxer (D-CA) and influenced by the Armenian-American lobby, fails to meet this expectation. Instead, the bill imposes an insensitive and unethical allegation of the â&#x20AC;&#x153;Armenian genocideâ&#x20AC;? without any legal basis. SR 410 follows 7 preceding failed attempts in Congress, the United Nationsâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; repeated rejection in 1986, 2000 and 2007, and a Supreme Court ruling against a similar California law in 2012. In December 2013, the European Court of Human Rights also concluded that the Armenian alle-

gations constituted a historical and legal controversy that can not be equated to the Holocaust or other recognized crimes against humanity. SR 410 legislation of the biased historical narrative threatens the freedom of opinion over the subject. Contrary to its claims, the total Ottoman Armenian population did not exceed the census figure of 1.4 million, and according to Bernard Lewis, a renowned Princeton expert of the Ottoman history, the â&#x20AC;&#x153;genocideâ&#x20AC;? allegation constitutes only â&#x20AC;&#x153;the Armenian version of history.â&#x20AC;? Many Western scholars concur that between 1914 and 1922, Armenian nationalists supported by Russian, French and Greek armies also massacred over half a million Turks, Kurds, Azeris, and Circassians to establish an exclusive Armenian state in Anatolia and the Caucasus. SR 410 fails to address that suffering instead opting for an ethno-religious preference. Assessing history or establishing crimes is not the job of Congress, but that of academic institutions and courts. Meanwhile, during the UN General Assembly in March, Armenia joined 10 other states, including North Korea and Syria, to oppose a resolution against Russiaâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s annexation of Ukraineâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Crimean peninsula. Furthermore, Armenia was the only post-Soviet state to strongly support Russiaâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s brazen incursion, which forced Ukraine to recall its ambassador from Armenia. Thus, instead of wasting taxpayer dollars on baseless antagonism against the U.S.

and NATO ally, Turkey, SR 410 sponsors and supporters should finally rethink their position in terms of U.S. interests. I urge you to vote NO on SR 410. Sincerely.

Balloons over Paradise this weekend

Putting on a hot-air balloon race in Southwest Florida comes with its own unique set of challenges. Biggest of all is the wind. Balloons are completely wind-dependent, literally floating along with the breeze. Once the winds pick up – which in Southwest Florida starts around 9 or 9:30 a.m. – it’s no longer safe to have people out flying. “People come at 10 or 11 a.m. and say, ‘Where are all the balloons?” said Bob Carlton, a balloonist from Polk City who helps organize Immokalee’s event. “If you want to see the balloons, you have to get here early. But it’s actually really beautiful; to see all these balloons launching at sunrise, it’s worth it.” The event is at 6 a.m. April 26-27, Seminole Casino Immokalee, 506 S 1st St, Immokalee. sparagus has been a delicious symbol of spring since at least as far back as the Greeks, who called it asparagos — literally, “to spring up.” But however it is spelled, it makes me happy. Most grocers sell asparagus in a range of sizes, from thin and willowy to thick and stocky. Whatever the size, look for stalks that are firm and smooth from top to bottom, with tight, un-feathery tips. Also check that the grocer stored it properly, because asparagus is quite perishable. It should be stored stem down in ice or a bit of water. Once you get the asparagus home, arrange the stalks standing on their bottoms in a glass jar filled with 1/2 inch of water, or in a zip-close plastic bag with damp paper towel wrapped around the bottoms of the stems.

And try to eat your beautiful asparagus within a day or two of purchase, when it’s still at its peak of freshness. When it comes to prepping asparagus, I have one rule: If the stem is more than 1/3 inch thick, it must be peeled. Doing so ensures the spear will cook evenly. If you don’t peel it, you’ll overcook the tip before the stem becomes tender. Another reason to lose the peel on a thick stalk is that it’s tough. If, however, it strikes you as wasteful to lose those peels, you can gather them up (along with the tough bottoms of the stalks, which you also need to discard) and simmer them in chicken or vegetable broth to make a clear and flavorful asparagus soup. Once prepped, there are any number of delicious ways to cook asparagus. To start, there’s the old tried and true — briefly boiling or steaming the spears, then topping them with butter or vinaigrette. Simple and wonderful.

It also can be grilled, broiled or roasted at high heat, all of which amplify its natural sugars. By the way, I think it is asparagus’ natural sweetness that persuades usually veggie-averse children to make an exception. In this case, though, I’ve moved asparagus from the side to the center of the plate in the form of a one-pot Asian main course. You’ll want to have all the ingredients prepped and lined up on the counter before you start because once you get rolling everything goes into the pan very quickly. The actual cooking time is scarcely 10 minutes. You begin by pan-searing the raw spears in a hot pan to get a little color on them, adding shiitake mushrooms and shrimp, then flavoring it all with ginger, garlic, chili slices and oyster sauce. Serve it with a side of brown rice or your favorite whole grain and you’re good to go.

Pan-seared asparagus with shrimp, shiitakes and chilies Start to finish: 40 minutes Servings: 4 1 pound (about 1 bunch) asparagus, tough ends discarded 3 tablespoons vegetable oil, divided Salt 5 ounces shiitake mushrooms, stems discarded, caps cut into quarters (or sixths if caps are large) 1 pound large raw shrimp, peeled and deveined 2 teaspoons minced garlic 2 teaspoons minced fresh ginger 1 small red or green chili, such as a jalapeno or serrano, seeds and ribs discarded if desired, thinly sliced 1 cup low-sodium chicken broth 2 tablespoons oyster sauce 1 tablespoon cornstarch Cooked brown rice, to serve

n If the asparagus stalks are very thick, use a vegetable peeler to shave off the thick skins starting just below the tip and down to the bottom. Cut the stalks into angled 1/2-inch pieces. n In a large skillet over high, heat 1 tablespoon of the oil. When the oil is almost smoking, add all of the asparagus and a pinch of salt. Reduce the heat to medium-high and saute the asparagus, stirring, until it is crisp tender and golden at some of the edges, 4 to 5 minutes. Transfer the asparagus to a bowl and set aside. n Return the skillet to the heat and add another tablespoon of the oil, the shiitakes and a pinch of salt. Reduce the heat to medium and saute the mushrooms, stirring, until they are barely tender and golden around some of the edges, about 3 minutes. Transfer the shiitakes to the bowl with the asparagus. Return the skillet to the heat and add the remaining tablespoon of the oil and the shrimp. Saute the shrimp, stirring, for 2 minutes. Add the garlic, ginger and chili and cook, stirring, for 1 minute. n In a bowl whisk together the broth, oyster sauce and cornstarch. Add the mixture to the skillet, whisking, and bring to a boil. Return the asparagus and the mushrooms to the skillet and simmer for 1 minute. To serve, spoon a mound of rice onto each of 4 plates, then top with a quarter of the asparagus and shrimp mixture. n Nutrition information per serving: 270 calories; 110 calories from fat (41 percent of total calories); 12 g fat (1 g saturated; 0 g trans fats); 170 mg cholesterol; 14 g carbohydrate; 3 g fiber; 4 g sugar; 27 g protein; 500 mg sodium.

Island’s pineapple past can lead to a sweet future Although the climate of Florida is not perfectly suited to large scale commercial production of pineapple, there was at one time a large pineapple farm on Horrs Island, now known as Key Marco. This was in the days when the Gardening clam factory was in operation. You can grow very sweet pineapples here EILEEN WARD and many people have a plant or two tucked into their garden. The pineapple originated in Brazil and Paraguay but will grow in all the tropical and warm, subtropical areas of the world. The plant is a small, herbaceous perennial with long sword-like leaves which spiral around the short stem. The fruit develops from the end of the stem and consists of many small, seedless fruits fused together. Size can vary from one to 10 pounds or more. Pineapples are oval to cylindrical in shape and yellowish to orange in color when ripe. In the tropics fruit production occurs throughout the year. In Florida greatest production occurs during the summer months. There are many new pineapples on plants now. The fruit should be allowed to ripen on the plant for maximum flavor and sugar content. Pineapples grow best where the temperature is warm and relatively uniform throughout the year. They will survive a temperature of 28 degrees Fahrenheit with leaf damage and will be killed at lower temperatures. Therefore, in Florida planting should be restricted to southern coastal areas like Marco Island. Prolonged exposure to temperatures in the low 40s causes internal breakdown

or heart-rot of the flesh. Extremely high temperatures cause sunburning and cracking of the fruit. While most sandy, well drained soils are satisfactory for growing pineapples, they thrive best in a sandy loam, mildly acid of medium fertility. The plant tolerates drought very well but adequate soil moisture is necessary for good fruit production. Propagation is by planting new vegetative growth from the mother plant. There are four types: “slips” from the stalk below the fruit, “suckers” which originate at the axils of leaves, “crowns” which grow from the top of the fruits, and “ratoons” which grow from underground portions of the stem. Slips and suckers are the preferred planting material if they are large and vigorous. My personal favorite is the crown. Simply cut the green, leafy top from your pineapple, strip a few leaves to expose the stem and stick it in soil in a pot or your garden. Pineapples do best when planted during the summer in beds with two to five rows of plants spaced 18 to 30 inches apart. Mulch will help eliminate weeds and conserve moisture. Fertilize three times a year with an 8-08 including magnesium and iron. The most troublesome pests of pineapples in Florida are mealybugs and nematodes. For control of mealybugs apply a spray containing malathion. Do not apply malathion within 7 days of harvest. Nematodes weaken and destroy roots. Affected plants are unable to use fertilizer effectively and lose vigor. Preventive mea-

sures are the only way to avoid nematode damage. Use nematode free planting material. Crown and slips which have never been rooted will be free of nematodes or any planting material from nematode free soils. Virgin soil is not necessarily free of the kinds of nematodes which injure pineapple, but is less likely to have injurious nematodes than land in which vegetables or ornamentals have been grown in preceding seasons. Finally, you can fumigate nematode infested soil using a chemical

Nate knew where all the security weaknesses and surveillance cameras were – except one. So when Joe Pickett was shown trailcam video weeks later and he spotted his friend Nate dragging something, he knew that trouble was mountain-high. For some time, the feds had been nosing around northeastern Wyoming , where folks kept mostly to themselves. In that atmosphere of solitude lived a certain Wolfgang Templeton, a man who owned half the county and most of the people in it, and whose name repeatedly rose during investigations of high-profile disappearances, including that of Scoggins. Was it just coincidence? With a ruse of “helping” Medicine Wheel County Game Warden Jim Latta with a project, Pickett headed for the corner of the state, noting the beautiful land and the poverty of its people. Pickett had promised his wife that he’d avoid danger, but keeping safe wouldn’t be easy when there were so many questions. Why, for instance, did Latta seem afraid of the county’s judge? Why did he look the other way while a couple of Templeton employees poached wild game at will?

Who was the cold-eyed dandy on Templeton’s ranch? And why did everybody seem to know where Pickett was going, even before he got there? Perhaps most vexing of all was the question of Pickett’s friend Nate, and Nate’s covert activities. It pained Pickett to imagine how Nate was involved – although not as much as it would hurt if he kept snooping … Reading parts of “Stone Cold” is somewhat like going on a scenic vacation that takes a bad turn – in a good way. Author C.J. Box lets his main character, Joe Pickett, savor the land, and it’s gorgeous. We’re treated to descriptive images of colorful mountains and harsh beauty, where even scrub takes on a relaxing aura and invites us to linger just a bit. It’s easy, therefore, to be lulled into forgetting exactly what you’ve got in your hands. But then Box brings us abruptly back to his novel, in which few can be trusted and everything seems off. We’re soothed, then we’re hit with an uppercut of thriller that makes us reel – and makes us want more. This novel is part of a series but can definitely be read by itself, so if you’re in need of a hot mystery, get this. You won’t be sorry because, for you, “Stone Cold” fits.

I think not, since when I read the daily bulletins at the national tournaments, I am constantly surprised at the variations that crop up on themes I thought I knew well. Today’s deal contains a useful idea that I first saw in a problem by that great writer, Terence Reese. Once you have spotted the theme, I am sure you will remember the concept in the future. Here you play four spades after a transfer auction, and the spade 10 is led. You take the spade ace and queen, finding the bad break, then unblock the spade jack as East discards a diamond and a heart. This is the best defense -East needs to keep enough small hearts as a possible force against declarer. Now it looks natural to play the heart ace, ruff a heart, then drive out the club ace. But the defenders will be able to win and cash three hearts, thanks to East’s thoughtful defense. However, after three rounds of trump, declarer does have a counter to this potential problem. The winning play is a low heart from hand at trick four. The best East can do is win and continue the attack on hearts. Declarer ruffs in dummy, then draws the last trump, discarding a diamond from hand. He next sets up the clubs by driving out the ace, after which his hand will be high, with the exception of a diamond loser at the end. ANSWER: You have a straightforward choice: Do you bid two clubs or three? The fact that you have soft cards in both red suits (and partner is sure to be short in one of them) means your cards will not be pulling their full weight, so a raise to two clubs should suffice.

A second look at Easter

On Sunday, thousands of people greeted the Easter Sunday sunrise at the beach behind the Marco Island Marriott, in a tradition that has now gone on for 26 years.
