Keep your copy of What’s On close at hand as it contains an events calendar, easy to use vouchers, maps, and information to help with accommodation, shopping, dining and transport and plenty of great ideas for activities and sightseeing. Queenstown & Southern Lakes at a Glance The beauty of this exceptional area will take your breath away, and if it doesn’t, the adrenalin-rush activities and adventure packed jaunts you can have certainly will! Queenstown enjoys the best of both worlds: sitting on the shores of Lake Wakatipu, beneath the towering peaks of The Remarkables mountain range. This sophisticated resort town offers year-round activities in an environment of breathtaking beauty. In winter, skiers from all over the world enjoy the excellent facilities at both Coronet Peak and The Remarkables. In summer Lake Wakatipu becomes the focus for watersports. Wanaka is a paradise for thrill seekers or a tranquil respite from

a hectic world – you decide. In winter, Wanaka is the favourite alpine playground of many. For those who favour adrenalin there’s jetboating, rafting, canyoning, trout fishing, gold-panning and sledging adventures; plus rock climbing and hang-gliding. It’s also the gateway to Mount Aspiring National Park, with superb hunting, fishing, tramping and mountaineering on offer. Don’t miss a visit to the beautifully restored goldmining settlement of Arrowtown where you will be charmed by tree-lined avenues and an insight into how life used to be. Further afield, drink in Fiordland’s rugged seascapes and marvel at Milford Sound with the glaciated sides of the 1692-metre Mitre Peak commanding your admiration. Use this booklet as your guide; take your time and take lots of photos!

The best of what

Jasons Recommends

Queenstown has to offer for groups

All the best travel memories are those shared with friends, family or other like-minded souls. So gather your mates and loved ones together, because we’ve selected the best of what Queenstown has to offer for group visits.

Fear Factory Grab a group of your most fearless friends and be prepared to be spooked at Queenstown’s haunted attraction, Fear Factory. Wander down the dark hallways at your peril and get ready to take a journey into your worst nightmare. Horror fans will love this, especially if you like being well and truly scared out of your mind. You’ll be able to have a laugh over your friends’ petrified photos, and congratulate yourselves on making it out alive. Contact details: Phone: 0800 FEAR FACTORY. Email: info@fearfactory.co.nz www.fearfactory.co.nz

Skyline Gondola & Luge Head up the Skyline Gondola and be wowed by the amazing views over Queenstown. The best thing to do with your friends or family is jump into a luge cart and race each other down to the bottom. Whether you take your time and cruise down slowly taking in the scenery, or get your adrenalin pumping with a race to the finish on the fast track, the choice is yours. Or mix it up and try a few different combos. Whatever you choose, you’ll be sure to have a great time. Contact details: Phone: 03 441 0101. Email: queenstown@skyline.co.nz www.skyline.co.nz

Segway on Q Riding an eco-friendly Segway Personal Transporter is a fantastic way to explore Queenstown. Choose a one hour trip and you’ll find out how much fun these machines are to ride, or the two hour Queenstown Tour for the ultimate Segway experience. They are really simple to operate: just lean forwards to make the Segway go forward and put your weight back to stop. It takes a bit of getting used to, but you and your friends and family will have a great time trying it out. Contact details: Phone: 0800 734 386. Email: info@segwayonq.com www.segwayonq.co.nz

This is a 2–3 grade river and so will be a bit more easy going, but still has amazing scenery to check out as you whiz by. As with all outdoor activities, conditions can be variable so make sure you check current snow and weather forecasts before you head for the mountains. You can also research the best ski and lift passes to buy before you even leave for the day. When thinking about what ski trails are best for you, keep this in mind: Beginner (Green Runs): Gentle slopes and progressive terrain suitable for complete beginners and those building confidence or learning new skills. Intermediate (Blue Runs): Varying terrain with steeper gradients. A next step challenge for those that know now how to turn, slow down and stop! Advanced (Black Runs): Steep terrain, requiring ability to manoeuvre in narrow spaces. Handy Ski & Snowboard Links www.snowreports.co.nz www.snow.co.nz www.metservice.co.nz

It’s not just the magnificent southern scenery that will leave you breathless, there’s also an exciting range of activities that will keep the adrenalin-junkies happy, and there’s plenty to do for those who prefer things a little more relaxed. Bungy jumping, white water rafting, jetboating, tandem paragliding and skydiving are all right on your doorstep in Queenstown, with The Remarkables mountain range as a dramatic backdrop. During winter, Queenstown is a magnet for skiers and snowboarders, with four ski fields to try out: Cardrona Alpine Resort, Treble Cone, Coronet Peak and The Remarkables. In summer, the slopes become a great trail zone for walking, hiking and mountainbiking. There are tracks for people of all fitness levels, whether you’re looking for a gentle stroll or a multi-day trip into the backcountry. You certainly don’t have to be a daredevil to enjoy Queenstown. For those who are looking for a more sedate experience, there is plenty to see and do. Jump on a boat on Lake Wakatipu and enjoy the amazing scenery as you cruise along. Or saddle up and go horse riding and breathe in that fresh mountain air, with just the sound of birdsong and clattering hooves. There are also several 4WD tours which will take you to some of the most inaccessible, unspoilt back country regions if you want to get away from it all. Or take to the skies with one of the many scenic flights available and get a whole new perspective on this beautiful mountain town.

The Lord of the Rings cast and crew fell in love with the dramatic mountain scenery of this region, and you will too. ”Tolkien’s world was one of the deep hidden valleys, barren wastelands, remote mystical mountains and lush, low valleys” Peter Jackson The majestic beauty of New Zealand’s adventure capital and the surrounding area fit this imagery perfectly. Whether you are a full enthusiast or have just seen one of the films, it is an amazing opportunity to view some of the key locations used for this epic trilogy. Queenstown’s Lake Wakatipu was used as the location for some scenes involving ‘Lothlorien’, home to the Lady of the Forest, Galadriel. The river Kawarau, which flows from Queenstown’s Lake Wakatipu to Cromwell, became part of the Great River Anduin, and fans can now raft past the site of Argonath (the Pillar of the Kings). The pillars themselves, of course, were computer-generated. The historic goldmining town of Arrowtown, a short drive from Queenstown, lies near another The Lord of the Rings film location, the rugged Skippers Canyon. This was the site of filming for Arwen’s (Liv Tyler’s) most dramatic moment - her confrontation with the Black Riders at the Ford of Bruinen. The town is also famous for the autumn colours of the exotic trees that line its main street.

There lie the woods of Lothlorien!’ said Legolas The Lord of the Rings, J R R Tolkien

In Queenstown you won’t have to look far for a great place to quench your thirst; from friendly pubs to popular bistros spilling out onto the pavement, and let’s not forget the sophisticated wine bars where you can settle in for a cosy night and sip the stunning world-class wines on offer in the region. If you’re a party person, and looking for more party people, then you’ll be pleased to know that Queenstown is often referred to as the party capital. Queenstown’s busy bars and clubs frequently have live music and fantastic drink specials, and you can even join in on a bar crawl, which will take you to the hot spots of the city. You may be used to putting a few ice cubes in your drinks, but why not have your drinks within an ice bar? Rug up and chill out with some mates and make some new friends in an ultra-cool atmosphere of an ice bar. Wherever you go – whether it’s a big night out, or a quiet afternoon in – you’re sure to get a warm welcome and you’ll be wanting to return again and again.

While Queenstown is known for its endless excitement, it’s also a place to relax and unwind. If you’ve been up on the slopes, or hitting the shopping, ensure you get some time to spend on yourself and revitalise. Queenstown and the surrounding area has plenty of great beauty salons and spas where you can while away an hour or two and get yourself thoroughly pampered. Give yourself a treat and choose from one of the many relaxing and revitalising treatments available; enjoy a facial treatment or invigorating massage, or why not give your tired feet some much-needed attention with a soak and a pedicure. For some total indulgence, lie back and enjoy an aromatic full body polish or a luxurious body wrap. Some salons also have couples treatments available so you and your loved one can enjoy a pampering together. Get your nails done, top up your tan in safety, or give yourself the star treatment for a special occasion with a professional makeup session, waxing, brow shaping or an exfoliating treatment. Whatever treatment – or treatments – you choose, you can be sure you’ll emerge feeling like you’re on cloud nine.

For some total indulgence give yourself the star treatment

From luxury hotels, easy and tidy motels and apartments to friendly backpacker hostels; from bright and buzzy city centre to B&B rooms with a mountain view, or meeting rooms conveniently close to the airport, Queenstown has room for you. Look for the Qualmark star rating system to ascertain how an accommodation property has been independently rated. The Qualmark star system rates various categories of accommodation in New Zealand and is a reliable indication of the standard of facilities. You can also ask to see the room – inspection should be welcome. Hotels generally offer tea/coffee making facilities, a bathroom and an onsite restaurant and bar. Motel units and apartments are ideal for travellers who prefer to do their own cooking, and usually offer self-contained kitchens. If you’re on a fixed budget, try some of the backpacker or youth hostel accommodation with communal facilities. Holiday parks are another good alternative, providing cabins or camping in a more peaceful rural setting. For a few more of life’s luxuries, there are plenty of hotels, motels and self-contained apartments. To find out more, visit jasons.co.nz/queenstown/accommodation.

Tucked away at the end of a valley, away from the prevailing winds, Arrowtown is known for its tranquillity and charm. It is the perfect foil for its busier neighbour, Queenstown. If you want to shop at a leisurely pace, dine at the many cafés or restaurants, take in a movie at a boutique cinema, undertake one of the many walks close to the town or soak up the history at the Lakes District Museum, then Arrowtown is a ‘must visit’. Arrowtown’s unique museum, established in 1948, presents an authentic picture of early Maori in the Southern Lakes District, exhibits the harsh pioneering days of the European Settlers, and the exciting goldrush era. The museum complex includes the town’s original Bank of New Zealand premises, the bank’s stables and the town’s baker’s oven all built circa 1875. Exhibits are family friendly and hands-on learning is always encouraged. The tree-lined avenues are not only picturesque, but also serve to frame the town’s history. The site of the first gold discovery in the Wakatipu in 1862, the town has managed to retain many of its heritage buildings. Through planning controls and community lobbying, around 60 buildings and features remain. During the goldrush, Chinese miners were invited to the town in an effort to stimulate the flagging economy. Their settlement on the outskirts of town has been turned into a park with some of the buildings remaining intact, while others have been recreated to give the visitor a sense of how the Chinese miners lived. Walking and biking have become increasingly popular with over 15 trails leaving from Arrowtown. These range from one-hour circuits to all day expeditions – a trail map is available at the Museum.
