Whether it’s cross-country, back country, gentle riding or full-speed downhill runs, consider Rotorua to be your biking playground. Whakarewarewa Forest A few minutes south of Rotorua’s city centre, Whakarewarewa Forest, also known as “The Redwoods”, has a 130km labyrinth of continually evolving trails. A mountain biking haven, the Whakarewarewa trails have been rated among the top eight by Red Bull and the best by Australian Mountain Biking magazine. The Redwoods offer an unbeatable blend of riding surfaces and topography; you’ll be riding under the canopy of towering redwood, radiata, douglas fir, eucalyptus and larch, not to mention all the lush New Zealand tree-ferns. All tracks are well marked, and users should remain on designated tracks. The inner core network of tracks, with entry from the car park at Waipa State Mill House or Redwoods car park on Long Mile Road, are suitable for beginner to intermediate riders – great for families. Local tips: • Find a trail called Be Rude Not To and link it to Mad If You Don’t. You’ll be smiling all the way to the closest geothermal hot pool. • Purchase a “manky” from the Redwoods Gift Shop and Visitor Centre or local bike shops. This cool fabric forest map is an eco-friendly and convenient navigation tool; legible when wet, and can be washed and dried. Skyline Rotorua MTB Gravity Park This park is ideal for riders wanting a bit more speed. New Zealand’s first year-round Gondola-assisted bike lift, it gives riders access to worldclass downhill mountain biking on its network of 8.5km trails. A range of Gondola-assisted bike passes can be purchased from the ticket office. Te Ara Ahi – Thermal by Bike Part of Nga Haerenga – The New Zealand Cycle Trail, this 66km track takes riders through a thermal wonderland of steaming vents, bubbling mud pools and spectacular geysers. Between the trail heads at Rotorua and Lake Ohakuri, this cycle trail takes in four significant geothermal fields: Whakarewarewa, Waimangu Volcanic Valley, Wai-O-tapu Thermal Wonderland, and Waikite Valley Thermal Springs. You can ride the trail in three sections; allow two days. Other highlights include the Lake Okaro restoration project, Rainbow Mountain, Te Ranga Hot Pools, Waikite Geothermal Field, and the Paeroa Range. (www.nzcycletrail.com) Local tip: • Kerosene Creek, a thermally heated stream is a great spot to ease aches and pains after your ride. And it’s free! • Shuttles from Lake Ohakuri to Rotorua or Taupo must be organised in advance.

Sample award-winning fine dining with a breathtaking view of Lake Rotorua, relax at a stylish cafe or bistro, enjoy the elegance and charm of a country lodge, or soak up the ambience of an Englishstyle pub or Austrian Gasthaus. With its strong Maori traditions, Rotorua is also the ideal place to try some indigenous kai (food). Maori cuisine is enjoying a renaissance as traditional plants and ingredients seen more often in contemporary dishes. Many of the tour options to Maori villages include the chance to try a succulent hangi – a traditional feast of meat and vegetables steamed in an underground pit heated by hot rocks. Meats most often used are lamb and pork and you’ll get to taste the traditional New Zealand roast vegetables such as kumara and pumpkin. A hangi takes several hours to cook and the end result has a delicious smoky flavour.

Rotorua has a long history as a famous spa resort, thanks to the natural therapeutic values of its geothermal springs and mud. The city’s heritage Bath House, which now houses the Rotorua Museum, first opened back in 1908. In its heyday, it offered baths, mud treatments and other therapies to some 70,000 people a year.

Established in October 2008, Willow has become a destination store for Rotorua’s latest fashion with parking outside the main door. Top New Zealand designs in store, including Trelise Cooper, Robyn Mathieson, @emgirl, Art Style plus many more.

You can still bathe in the thermally heated waters at the restored Blue Baths and take a trip through the old changing rooms – now a museum bringing to life the building’s colourful spa history.

From luxury hotels, easy and tidy motels and apartments to backpacker-friendly hostels, B&B rooms with a view, Rotorua has a room for you. Look for the Qualmark star rating system to ascertain how an accommodation property has been independently rated. The Qualmark star system rates various categories of accommodation in New Zealand and is a reliable indication of the standard of facilities. You can also ask to see the room – inspection should be welcome. Hotels generally offer tea/coffee making facilities, a bathroom and an onsite restaurant and bar. Motel units and apartments are ideal for travellers who prefer to do their own cooking, and usually offer self-contained kitchens. If you’re on a fixed budget, try some of the backpacker or youth hostel accommodation with communal facilities. The regional parks are another good alternative, providing camping in a more peaceful rural setting. For a few more of life’s luxuries, there are plenty of hotels, motels and self-contained apartments. To find out more, visit jasons.co.nz/rotorua/accommodation.

Road rules The official New Zealand Road Code guidebook is available at most bookstores and petrol stations. New Zealand drives on the left. At roundabouts, always keep left and give way to all traffic on your right. All traffic turning right should give way to a vehicle coming from the opposite direction and turning left. This applies at cross roads and T-intersections where both vehicles are facing each other. New Zealand law requires all the occupants of a moving vehicle car to wear a seatbelt. It is illegal to use a mobile phone while driving unless it is hands-free. The speed limit on the open road is 100km/h and 50km/h in residential areas unless otherwise marked. A new and tougher drink-drive law sees a lowering of alcohol limit for drivers aged 20 years and over, reduced from 400mcg of alcohol per litre of breath to 250mcg. The blood alcohol limit has been lowered from 80mg of alcohol per 100ml of blood (0.08) to 50mg (0.05). For drivers under 20, the limit stays at zero. The law says you must not drive if the amount of alcohol in your breath or blood exceeds these limits. However, there is no “safe” level of alcohol for driving and the best thing to do is not drive if you are going to drink. Call a cab or have a designated sober driver.

Banks & ATMS Trading banks are normally open Monday–Friday, 9am–4.30pm, and most have ATMs (money machines).

Millions of years in the making, Waitomo’s labyrinth of caves, rivers and sinkholes provide an underground playground unlike any other. Discover glowworm-lit walls on gentle walks and boat cruises or opt for something more adventurous – like abseiling 100m into a Lost World or black water rafting. Waitomo, located a couple of hours drive east of Rotorua, gets its name from the Maori words “wai” (water) and “tomo” (hole or shaft). Rising from the sea about 30 million years ago Waitomo Caves have continued to evolve ever since, thanks to the constant action of water seeping through the earth. There are around 300 known limestone caves that lie in the hills below the Waitomo region. The caves feature dramatic formations of limestone including stalactites, stalagmites, columns and natural caverns. The walls are decorated with galaxies of native glow worms that give them a starry effect. The most easily accessible caving experience includes guided walking or boat tours of the Waitomo Glowworm Caves. The tours reveal a fascinating subterranean world featuring glowworms, ancient limestone formations and commentary that includes Maori myths and legends associated with the area. If you’re into adventure, try the unique black water rafting – you’ll crawl, swim and float through the caves on a rubber tube. Abseling and zip-lining is also offered along with walking, squeezing and climbing through caves. These activities may all sound extreme, but all you need is a moderate fitness level and a sense of adventure.
