Documentary Edge Festival 2015

La cenerentola (Cinderella)

Celebrating an inspiring and groundbreaking decade of documentaries, the 10th Documentary Edge Festival is returning to Auckland’s Q Theatre. The theatre will be transformed into a documentarian’s one-stop hub with films, Q and A, and special events. Among the highlights this year are also the debut of Documentary Edge’s new interactive technology and presence of visionary documentarian, Chris McDonald. 20 May– 1 Jun (Screen Edge Forum on 29 May). Q Theatre, Auckland www.documentaryedge.org.nz

Rossini’s dazzling La cenerentola is a fairy-tale with a difference. In this Cinderella story, stepfathers are tyrants, beggar-philosophers replace fairy godmothers, and a silver bangle stands in for that glass slipper. Brilliantly quirky, Rossini’s magically mischievous music tells a very human story of kindness, forgiveness and generosity. New Zealand Opera’s most vivacious and effervescent show of the season, La cenerentola will be, quite simply, magic. 30 May–7 Jun. ASB Theatre, Aotea Centre www.nzopera.com, 0800 NZ OPERA

Whether you’re in a mood for rugged beaches and native bush, walking along the coast or exploring a rich heritage, Auckland’s has it all. Discover the city on one of these fantastic walks. DAY WALKS Coast to Coast Walk 4-5 hours, 16km From Waitemata to the Manukau Harbour, this walk takes you along landscapes that has been shaped volcanoes and people; from the Maori who have occupied the land for more than 600 years to the remnants of our colonial past. Starting at the Viaduct Harbour, the walkway ducks and dives into inner city streets, over Auckland Domain and Mt Eden, and through Cornwall Park/One Tree Hill before coming to Onehunga Wharf. Te Henga Walkway 4 hours, 8km From Te Henga (Bethells Beach) to Constable Rd in Muriwai, this cliff top walk means some tough climbs, but the views are of the wild west coast from the top are well worth the effort. The walkway is now part of the multi-day Hillary Track. It can get muddy and slippery after rain and slips are visible – stick to the marked path. Among other stunning walks in the majestic Waitakere rages are the Kitekite Falls Track that takes you to the 40m multi-tiered Kitekite waterfalls, Upper Nihotupu Reservoir Walk and Fairy Falls Walk. Auckland City Heritage Walks Peek into the past and enjoy the present with one of the heritage walks available in Auckland City. The uptown heritage walk will take you to Aotea Square (once a swamp, but now a popular public space) and iconic buildings such as the Town Hall, Civic Theatre and the Auckland Art Gallery. The free Karanghape Rd Heritage walk is a discovery of Auckland’s most colourful street, while a downtown heritage walk traces the history of Auckland’s historic waterfront.

At the summit another track circles the rim of the crater and offers panoramic views. MULTI-DAY WALKS Hillary Track 4 days, 77km The Hillary Track epitomises the adventure and personal achievement that Sir Edmund Hillary, after whom the track is named, championed. A true wilderness experience, it takes walkers through the diverse, often challenging, West Coast. The self-guided tramp connects various tracks and basic backcountry campgrounds (advanced bookings required on these). Aotea Track 2–3 days, 30km Hop on a ferry to the Great Barrier Island to explore the beautiful Aotea Track that loops the central mountainous area of the island. Auckland has plenty of great beauty salons and spas where you can while away an hour or two and get yourself thoroughly pampered. So make the most of the many options available and take the time to spend on yourself. Give yourself a treat and choose from one of the many treatments available; enjoy a relaxing facial or invigorating massage, or why not give your tired feet some much-needed attention with a soak and a pedicure. For some real indulgence, lie back and relax and enjoy an aromatic full-body polish or a luxurious body wrap. Some salons also have couples treatments available so you and your loved one can enjoy a pampering together. Top up your tan in safety at one of Auckland’s solariums, or give yourself the star treatment for a special occasion with a professional makeup session, waxing, brow shaping or an exfoliation. If you find yourself short of time to get to a salon, consider a mobile beauty clinic that will come to you – so you can enjoy a pampering in the comfort of your own room. Whatever treatment – or treatments – you choose, you can be sure you’ll emerge feeling like you’re on cloud nine.

Relax and enjoy a blissful hot stone massage, an aromatic full body polish or body wrap.

From luxury hotels, easy and tidy motels and apartments to friendly backpacker hostels; from the bright and buzzy city centre to green and charming suburbs, or meeting rooms conveniently close to the airport, Auckland has room for you. Look for the Qualmark star rating system to ascertain how an accommodation property has been independently rated. The Qualmark star system rates various categories of accommodation in New Zealand and is a reliable indication of the standard of facilities. You can also ask to see the room – inspection should be welcome. Hotels generally offer tea/coffee making facilities, a bathroom and an onsite restaurant and bar. Motel units and apartments are ideal for travellers who prefer to do their own cooking, and usually offer self-contained kitchens. If you’re on a fixed budget, try some of the backpacker or youth hostel accommodation with communal facilities. The regional parks are another good alternative, providing camping in a more peaceful rural setting. Not only does Auckland boast 48 extinct volcanoes, with hill-like craters scattered around the city, it is also home to more than 85,000 boats, earning its title “City of Sails”. Get your bearings and your adrenalin pumping in the central city by leaping off the Sky Tower, or test your vertigo by walking round its outside ledge at just 1.2m wide. Browse Auckland Art Gallery’s extensive collection of more than 15,000 artworks. Alternatively, take a stroll to the city’s Domain and find out more about New Zealand’s history and its people at Auckland’s War Memorial Museum. Auckland’s central waterfront has extended as a place to meet, do business and relax. The popular Viaduct area used to be the only place to be seen; now there are numerous waterfront locations to wine and dine. From the Britomart precinct to Wynyard Quarter, you’ll find affordable, tasty fare and spectacular sea views. Mission Bay is a short, picturesque drive (or bus ride) from the city along Auckland’s stunning waterfront. Stroll along its long golden beach then grab an icecream or fish and chips to refuel.

Hike up to the top of Auckland’s highest volcano, Mount Eden, 196 metres above sea level, with 360-degree views of the city. The neighbouring suburb of Kingsland is home to Eden Park, where you can watch the All Blacks in action. Finish your day in the hip suburb of Ponsonby, which is great for cute arty shops and funky cafés, with a buzzing bar and restaurant scene.

Highlights • Take the steering wheel of an authentic America’s Cup yacht with Explore NZ. • Watch an incredible Maori cultural performance and a highenergy haka every day at Auckland War Memorial Museum. • Enjoy dinner at one of Auckland’s fantastic restaurants in the Viaduct Harbour or Wynyard Quarter. • See penguins at play or swim with the sharks at Kelly Tarlton’s Sea Life Aquarium on the way to Mission Bay.

Parnell’s colonial-style shops specialise in locally-made crafts, ranging from designer jewellery, pounamu (New Zealand jade) and clothing to paintings, glass-work and sculpture. If that’s not enough to satisfy your shopping fix, head to the neighbouring suburb of Newmarket and explore its designer fashion stores.

Head west and explore Waitakere’s lush native bush, enjoy a stroll on the wild black sand beaches or relax in one of the wineries.

Shuttle services run daily from central Auckland to the West Coast beaches. If you have your own transport, make a pit-stop in Titirangi village for a coffee, and perhaps even catch the Titirangi Village Market (last Sunday of the month) at Titirangi War Memorial Hall from 10am until 2pm.

• Head along the Kitekite track (1.8km) from the Glen Esk Road carpark at Piha and you’ll see a pretty three-tiered waterfall.

Continue west along Scenic Drive to Arataki Visitor Centre, the gateway to the Waitakere Ranges Regional Park, which covers more than 16,000 hectares of native rainforest and coastline. Packed with fascinating exhibits, the visitor centre alone could keep you entertained for hours, but if you’re keen to stretch your legs there are more than 250km of walking trails to choose from. Tracks start directly from the centre, with a wide range of others just a short drive away. Try Fair Falls track, or explore Cascade Kauri Park, located in the heart of the Ark in the Park conservation project.

• Adrenalin fans will enjoy Woodhill Forest, which has a network of mountain-bike trails and quadbiking adventures.

• Watch the wild waves from the clifftops at Muriwai Beach or the Piha Beach lookout.

• Enjoy a cellar door tasting or a delicious lunch at one of Auckland’s vineyards in Kumeu.

Head further west for a bracing stroll on the black sand beaches of Karekare or Piha, their dark colour a product of high volumes of volcanic iron rich sand. The Kitekite Falls trail can also be accessed from Piha, or enjoy the views after climbing half-way up imposing Lion Rock (walk down to the waters edge to see the Lion). Venture further afield and you can hit the waves with Muriwai surf school, or for some fun with the kids slide down the massive sand dunes at Lake Wainamu at Bethells – don’t miss the delicious kumara chips at the Bethells Beach Café.
