Welcome to the beautiful Bay of Plenty!

Events Calendar ...............................................................................................6

You may fall in love instantly with this region that lives up to its name, but we suggest you read through this guide and take your time to really get to enjoy this sunny part of Aotearoa that stretches from laidback Waihi Beach to beautiful Ohope. For about 700 years, Maori people have been living here; the local iwi (tribes) arrived by waka (sea-faring canoes) that voyaged from the Polynesian ancestral homeland of Hawaiki and landed in Maketu, Mauao and Whakatane. When Captain Cook sailed in on the Endeavour in 1769, he named the stretch of coast between the Coromandel Peninsula and East Cape the Bay of Plenty. He knew what he was talking about; this is a region offering abundance from the land and the sea. But Cook could never have envisaged the variety of fun-filled activities and bountiful produce available along this stretch of coast today: the region offers a mix of outdoor activities, scenic attractions, culture and top dining experiences. Not to mention the superb scenery (this 125 km sweep of pristine coastline is part of the Pacific Coast Highway, one of the Pacific’s great drives), which even features New Zealand’s only active marine volcano!

Regional Overview

• Walk the 18km Nga Tapuwae O Toi walkway, around Whakatane Heads to Ohope Beach. • Be welcomed at Mataatua Wharenui - New Zealand’s Maori meeting house that came home after 130 years of being exhibited overseas. • Swim with dolphins or take an eco-tour around Moutohora Island Sanctuary. • Take a big game fishing adventure with one of the local charter fleet.

Ohope Beach • Take a walk in the scenic reserve and hear the call of wild Kiwi – the result of one of NZ’s most successful conservation projects. • Play golf at Ohope International Golf Course, a scenic treat between the beach and harbour and rated one of the top links courses in New Zealand.

At the mouth of the Whakatane River, 90km southeast of Tauranga, the sunny coastal town of Whakatane is the main centre of the Eastern Bay of Plenty. With a spectacular location overlooking the Pacific Ocean, Whakatane is naturally a hub for game fishing and marine sports, where keen anglers will find plenty of fishing charters to test their skills. The friendly town is steeped in Maori history, so spend at least an afternoon discovering Te Koputu – the new exhibition centre that includes galleries and museum displays of remarkable artefacts.

Ohiwa • Take a night bush walk to find a large glowworm grotto. • Ohiwa Beach is home to the endangered New Zealand dotteril and rare oyster catchers. The best time to see them is from October to April. • Enjoy safe kayaking, boating, fishing and swimming on Ohiwa Harbour. • Take a moonlight guided kayak tour across the Harbour.

Murupara and Te Urewera • Learn to fish for Trout and experience a world class fishing destination.

Off shore, the smouldering volcano of White Island (Whakaari) is New Zealand’s only marine volcano, and local operators will take you on a guided tour to view the volcano’s steaming vents and the old sulphur mine. It breathes, roars and it hisses with steaming vents releasing 800°C toxic gases from cracks in the ground, bubbling pools and roaring gas fumeroles (vents). However, what you’re seeing is only the peak of a much larger submarine mountain - the main vent is below sea level but shielded from the ocean by high crater walls.

Check in to some fantastic accommodation in the Bay of Plenty – whether you’re looking for luxury hotels and motels in Tauranga, Mount Maunganui, Waihi Beach, Papamoa or Whakatane, self-catering apartments, B&Bs or friendly backpacker hostels, there will be something just for you. Holiday parks are another good alternative, providing cabins or camping in a more peaceful setting. If you’re camping over the peak summer period (December until early March) book well in advance to get a good spot. A lot of Kiwis take their holidays at this time so the more popular beach and lakeside campgrounds fill up quickly. The Qualmark star system rates various categories of accommodation in New Zealand and is a reliable indication of the standard of facilities. Jasons offers an authenticated accommodation review service online, making us a trusted source for New Zealand accommodation reviews. Just visit www.jasons.co.nz and leave a review for any of our listed accommodation providers.

Road Rules New Zealand drives on the left. At roundabouts, always keep left and give way to all traffic on your right. All traffic turning right should give way to a vehicle coming from the opposite direction and turning left. This applies at cross roads and T-intersections where both vehicles are facing each other. New Zealand law requires all the occupants of a moving vehicle car to wear a seatbelt. It is illegal to use a mobile phone while driving unless it’s ‘hands-free’. The speed limit on the open road is 100km/h and 50km/h in residential areas unless otherwise marked. The New Zealand Police enforce all traffic laws, including the speed limit and dealing with accidents. All accidents must be reported to the police within 24 hours.

The Bay of Plenty has a great range of transport options to help you get from A to B, including rental cars, campervans, taxis and buses to the outlying areas. Public buses in Tauranga are called Bay Hoppers. This service is provided by Go Bus and managed by the Bay of Plenty Regional Council. Buses run seven days a week and on all public holidays except Christmas Day and Good Friday. Intercity Coachlines, Newmans and Naked Bus runs regular services around the region, which also connect to Auckland, Rotorua, Taupo and around New Zealand. Catch any Intercity Coachlines, Newmans and Naked Bus services from Wharf Street, Tauranga, as well as regional services to Katikati, Rotorua, Te Puke, Omokoroa, Whakatane and all charter, tour and cruise ship buses. If you prefer door-to-door service try a shuttle bus or taxi. Taxi companies are available across the region, along with a range of rental cars, if you prefer to explore under your own steam. The Port of Tauranga is also a popular stop for cruise ships, which is another great way to see the region. For more information about the regional bus services and Bay Bus timetables visit: www.baybus.co.nz Phone: 0800 4 BAYBUS.

Get around the region by bus, or enjoy the freedom of exploring by car or campervan.

Touring routes Choose from several picturesque routes when getting to and from the Bay of Plenty. Drive along the spectacular East Coast with stunning beaches, crashing surf and coastal scenery or head inland with rugged bush, mountains and geothermal sights.

Pacific Coast Highway The Pacific Coast Highway traverses the east coast of the North Island. The route links Auckland, the Coromandel, Bay of Plenty and the East Cape to Hawke’s Bay. The highway is well signposted along the entire route and a detailed Pacific Coast Highway map is available through i-SITEs to help navigate the touring route with ease.

The Great New Zealand Touring Route The Great New Zealand Touring Route gives you the chance to experience the very best of the North Island while following two well-established themed touring routes: Pacific Coast Highway and Thermal Explorer Highway. Your experience starts the moment you leave Auckland. You can follow the unspoilt coastline of the Coromandel Peninsula, Bay of Plenty and Hawke’s Bay then drive inland to Lake Taupo and Rotorua through to Auckland. The Great New Zealand Touring Route is the only place in New Zealand where you will experience everything from unspoilt, pristine beaches to snow-capped mountains, hot bubbling mud pools, Maori culture and some of the country’s best wineries all in a few days. For more information about getting around the Bay of Plenty, visit any of the friendly i-SITE Visitor Information Centres listed on page 65.
