Bay of Plenty at a Glance

2

Haere Mai Welcome to the beautiful Bay of Plenty! You may fall in love instantly with this region that lives up to its name, but we suggest you read through this guide and take your time to really get to enjoy this sunny part of Aotearoa that stretches from laidback Waihi Beach to beautiful Ohope. For about 700 years, Maori people have been living here; the local iwi (tribes) arrived by waka (sea-faring canoes) that voyaged from the Polynesian ancestral homeland of Hawaiki and landed in Maketu, Mauao and Whakatane. When Captain Cook sailed in on the Endeavour in 1769, he named the stretch of coast between the Coromandel Peninsula and East Cape the Bay of Plenty. He knew what he was talking about; this is a region with plenty of fruit, plenty of rivers, plenty of sand and plenty of sea! But Cook could never have envisaged the variety of fun-filled activities and bountiful produce available along this stretch of coast today: bucket-loads of aquatic and land-based adventures, chilled beach culture, port-side communities, iconic fruits, saltwater hot pools, and mouth-watering seafood. Not to mention the superb scenery (this sweep of coast is part of the Pacific Coast Highway, one of the Pacific’s great drives), and even a marine volcano! Safe travels – we know you’ll have plenty of fun here!

10 Tauranga, Mt Maunganui & Papamoa

The western Bay of Plenty centres around Tauranga, the prosperous harbourside city, which together with its sister resort of Mount Maunganui are two of New Zealand’s best loved holiday destinations. Perfectly situated at the entrance to one of the largest natural harbours in New Zealand, Tauranga is one of the country’s busiest working ports, yet it retains a relaxed beachy atmosphere. Tauranga’s downtown boasts a lively waterfront area centred around ‘The Strand’. There’s a vast array of shops, cafés, restaurants and a vibrant nightlife to enjoy. Across the Tauranga Harbour Bridge, Mt Maunganui is an iconic holiday hot spot affectionately known as ‘The Mount’. The physical focal-point is Mauao – sacred to Tauranga’s three Iwi (tribes). Wander around Mauao base track or explore the boutique shops and cafes along Mount Maunganui’s Main Street. Mount Maunganui was recently voted New Zealand’s best beach by Trip Advisor.

Mount Maunganui Hot Salt Water pools © Tourism BOP

Further down the coast, the vast stretch of sand at Papamoa Beach is backed by dunes. Stroll along the uncrowded beach, find a picnic table and gaze out over the Pacific Ocean. Keen surfers and kiteboarders continue to enjoy the beach breaks and swells during the autumn and winter months.

The warm, salt water hot pools are perfect for soaking away any travel fatigue.

Tauranga • The Elms Mission House and Gardens is an essential stop and is the oldest European heritage site in the Bay of Plenty. • Visit the Battle of Gate Pa site where one of the most notable battles of the 1860s Land Wars took place. • Spend a few hours shopping and dining in the eateries on the Strand, before stopping at the Visitor Centre on 95 Willow Street to gain some local insights. • Head indoors to the Tauranga Art Gallery to check out historical and contemporary art exhibitions.

Mt Maunganui • Discover a dynamic display of classic aircraft at Classic Flyers Museum, many of which still take to the sky. •. To enjoy a more relaxed activity, hire a bike or tee off at one of the Mount’s superb golf courses. • Walking up and around Mauao, Mt Maunganui’s dormant volcano, is a mustdo activity with an obligatory coffee or hot chocolate afterwards. • Relax and unwind in the warm salt water Hot Pools under the shadow of Mauao after a day’s activities.

Papamoa • Experience the thrill of three wheeled land sailing or electric drift karts, guaranteed to blow out the cobwebs. • Don’t miss the Papamoa Hills for fabulous walking tracks. The Hills are home to 10 Maori Pa sites thought to date back as far as 1500 AD.

Waihi Beach – Homaunga coastal walking track

Athenree & Omokoroa

This idyllic area boasts many natural attractions that should be high on any visitor’s itinerary. White sand beaches, friendly coastal towns, beautiful riverside picnic spots and gentle native forest walks feature in this beautiful region. Waihi Beach, is a 9km stretch of ocean beach popular with holidaymakers and surfers. Locals call it ‘The Beach’, to differentiate it from inland Waihi, but don’t worry, there’s more than just sand and sea here, with plenty of places to eat, drink and shop. At the northern end of the beach a track traverses the headland to Orakawa Bay, a scenic spot fringed by pohutukawa trees. The historic village of Bowentown has a safe harbour, boat launching facilities and rock fishing. Across the harbour from Bowentown lies Athenree, separated from the open ocean by a small peninsula. This is a peaceful area with local hot springs, nice bushwalks and beautiful beaches nearby. For a taste of Maori history, and some amazing views, head up the Bowentown heads to check out the preserved Maori pa sites.

Katikati murals © Tourism BOP

A few decades ago, the inhabitants of Katikati decided to portray their history on spare walls around town and have created large murals depicting events and people who have influenced the area. Further towards Tauranga from Katikati is Omokoroa, a small coastal village with views across to Matakana Island and Mt Maunganui.

How many murals can you spot in New Zealand’s outdoor art gallery?

Waihi Beach • Walk along the beautiful Orokawa Reserve to the secluded Orokawa and Homunga bays for a picnic or swim. • Visit the local artisans in Waihi Beach art studios and galleries.

Katikati • Step back into the past at the Katikati Heritage Museum. The barn-style museum represents the pioneering days when Irish immigrants first settled in Katikati, up until today. Katikati is the site of the only planned Ulster Irish settlement in the world. • Katikati is also well-known for its Haiku Pathway, a two kilometre walk along the Uretara River. It features boulders engraved with Haiku, short poems written by poets from around the world. This is the largest collection of haiku ‘stones’ outside Japan and the only haiku pathway in the Southern Hemisphere.

Bowentown • Explore the walks of Bowentown Domain with its historic pa sites. • For a tranquil picnic follow the bush track over the hill to Shelly Bay.

Athenree • The natural hot springs are the perfect place to relax. • Visit historic Athenree Homestead, built in 1878 as part of a planned Irish settlement.

Omokoroa • Hire a kayak and explore the rocky points and bays within Omokoroa Harbour. • Don’t miss Omokoroa Thermal Pools where you can relax and revive.

14 Te Puke, Paengaroa & Maketu

Te Puke is known as the Kiwifruit Capital of the World, but there’s more to this area than furry brown-skinned and green-fleshed fruit. The first quarter acre of kiwifruit was planted in Te Puke in 1937. Nowadays, the majority of New Zealand’s kiwifruit is grown in the district, and the town even has a kiwifruit theme park. Te Puke’s main street is a thriving boutique retail area and the town is within easy reach of the Bay of Plenty beaches. Located about 15 minutes from Te Puke, the tiny seaside village of Maketu Beach is the landing place of the Arawa people and known for its stunning estuary and ocean beach . Take a stroll along the sands, play a round of golf, go surfing, or horse riding, or sample one of the famous Maketu Pies, still based on an old family recipe.

Kiwi 360, Te Puke © Tourism BOP

To the south, Paengaroa village – also known as ‘The Junction’ – has antique stores and galleries where you can browse local artists’ work. Life is pretty sweet in this area, and with beautiful flowering native bush nearby, it’s little wonder that the Bay of Plenty is home to some of the best honey-based products available. Get your sweet-fix or a jar of the medicinal marvel that is manuka honey and learn more about the research and development of honey products at the Comvita Visitor Centre.

The fertile land around Te Puke supports dairy farming, fruit growing (citrus, tamarillos, kiwifruit and passion fruit) and market gardening.

& Kawerau

At the mouth of the Whakatane River, 90km south-east of Tauranga, the sunny coastal town of Whakatane is the main centre of the Eastern Bay of Plenty. With a spectacular location overlooking the Pacific Ocean, Whakatane is naturally a hub for game fishing and marine sports, where keen anglers will find plenty of fishing charters to test their skills. The friendly town is steeped in Maori history, so spend at least an afternoon discovering Whakatane Museum’s artefacts and displays. Off shore, the smouldering volcano of White Island (Whakaari) is New Zealand’s only marine volcano, and local operators will take you on a guided tour to view the volcano’s steaming vents and the old sulphur mine. Head over the hills to Ohope Beach, which was recently voted voted by New Zealanders as their favourite beach. The popular beach resort of Ohope is located on a 11km stretch of sandy shore between the Whakatane Heads and the entrance to Ohiwa. Also visible from the Ohope coast is Moutohora (Whale Island). The Bay of Plenty has a great range of transport options to help you get from A to B, including rental cars, campervans, taxis and buses to the outlying areas. Public buses in Tauranga are called Bay Hoppers. This service is provided by Go Bus and managed by the Bay of Plenty Regional Council. Buses run seven days a week and on all public holidays except Christmas Day and Good Friday. Intercity Coachlines, Newmans and Naked Bus runs regular services around the region, which also connect to Auckland, Rotorua, Taupo and around New Zealand. Catch any Intercity Coachlines, Newmans and Naked Bus services from Wharf Street, Tauranga, as well as regional services to Katikati, Rotorua, Te Puke, Omokoroa, Whakatane and all charter, tour and cruise ship buses. If you prefer door to door service try a shuttle bus or taxi. Taxi companies are available across the region, along with a range of rental cars, if you prefer to explore under your own steam. The Pacific Coast Highway links Auckland, the Coromandel, Bay of Plenty and Hawke’s Bay. It takes approximately three hours to drive from Auckland to Tauranga with some fantastic coastal scenery along the way. The Port of Tauranga is also a popular stop for cruise ships, which is another great way to see the region. For more information about the regional bus services and Bay Bus timetables visit: www.baybus.co.nz Phone: 0800 4 BAYBUS.

Get around the region by bus, or enjoy the freedom of exploring by car or campervan.

Driving in NZ

79

The official New Zealand Road Code guidebook is available at most bookstores and petrol stations. Transport & Rentals

Road Rules New Zealand drives on the left. At roundabouts, always keep left and give way to all traffic on your right. All traffic turning right should give way to a vehicle coming from the opposite direction and turning left. This applies at cross roads and T-intersections where both vehicles are facing each other. New Zealand law requires all the occupants of a moving vehicle car to wear a seatbelt. It is illegal to use a mobile phone while driving unless it’s ‘hands-free’. The speed limit on the open road is 100km/h and 50km/h in residential areas unless otherwise marked. The New Zealand Police enforce all traffic laws, including the speed limit and dealing with accidents. All accidents must be reported to the police within 24 hours. Dial *555 on cell phones for non-emergency accidents. Obtain the driver’s name and address and vehicle registration number.
