Rotorua is famous the world over for its vibrant Maori culture, forest-fringed lakes and spectacular thermal areas

Rotorua Rotorua sits at the centre of one of the Pacific’s most active thermal regions and is surrounded by some magnificent examples of boiling mud pools, spouting geysers, steaming fumaroles and massive, water-filled craters. The city nestles beside the region’s largest such crater, Lake Rotorua. The heart of the city is Tutanekai Street, which runs through the centre of Rotorua almost to the lakefront. Hotels, museums and other central attractions can be found on or close to Fenton Street. The small village of Ngongotaha is just 8km from the city centre and offers great trout fishing in its local stream. Rotorua is well known for its vast array of adventure activities. These include unique experiences invented by Kiwis, such as bungy jumping, jetboating, zorbing and the city’s newest adventure, shweebing.

Rotorua Area The surrounding lake district encompasses a chain of beautiful lakes renowned for their fishing, including Lakes Rotoiti, Okataina, Rotoma and Tikitapu (Blue Lake). The lakes provide trout fishing, boating, kayaking and hot springs to enjoy. Near Lake Tarawera, you can visit the famous Buried Village, which was covered by the 1886 eruption of Mount Tarawera. Whakarewarewa Forest Park and the vast Kaingaroa Forest add to the scenic appeal of the Rotorua area, with wonderful walking and mountainbiking tracks to explore. The region’s rivers – in particular the Rangitaiki and the Kaituna – offer more thrills with whitewater rafting and kayaking options.

Taupo, Bay of Plenty & Waitomo South of Rotorua lies a second magnificent thermal region, Taupo, famous for its trout fishing and the thundering Huka Falls. To the north are the Bay of Plenty towns of Tauranga and Whakatane, and the Waitomo region, home to the vast underground caverns of the magnificent Waitomo Caves. browse and book @ www.jasons.com

Polynesian Spa Polynesian Spa is New Zealand’s leading international spa. For 130 years visitors have come to the site to try the famous geothermal therapeutic waters of Rotorua. Visitors have found great relief from the Priest Spring for their tired muscles, aches and pains due to the acidity level of the mineral water. Whereas the alkaline water from the Rachael Spring is very pleasing on the skin. Historically it was said that those who swam in Rachael Spring Water would be blessed with ageless beauty — as the alkaline water provides a natural antiseptic action due to its sodium silicate content. The Redwoods Gift Shop & Visitor Centre

Rotorua offers a vibrant shopping experience, from galleries and gift shops offering both traditional and contemporary Maori crafts to department stores and fashion boutiques Rotorua’s city centre has more than 400 retail outlets, from major chain stores and boutiques to specialty stores, galleries and craft outlets. One of the real highlights of shopping here is the superb range of Maori arts and crafts. The city’s galleries, souvenir outlets and gift shops stock some exquisite examples, from beautiful wood carvings inlaid with bone and paua to Maori weaving and designer jewellery crafted from natural products like flax, paua (abalone), greenstone (jade), gourds, bone and shell. Often carvings have their own special story to tell about the region and its people. Look for the toi iho™, which is used to identify authentic and quality Maori crafts. You can watch the carvers and weavers at work at Mountain Jade and Te Puia, and Tamaki Maori Village also has a fine display of indigenous work. If you’d like to visit some local artists and craftspeople, pick up a copy of the Rotorua Arts Trail from the information centre on Fenton Street. Other shopping goodies include fashion wear from the country’s leading designers, gems and crystals, contemporary New Zealand art, geothermal cosmetics, New Zealand made souvenirs and skincare products. Shopping Hours Generally, city trading hours are 9am until 5pm Monday to Friday and Saturday 9am until 1pm. Some shops and attractions are also open on Sundays. browse and book @ www.jasons.com

From a traditional Maori hangi to fine dining and ethnic eateries, Rotorua has a delectable range of wining and dining options With its strong Maori traditions, Rotorua is the ideal place to try some indigenous kai (food). Maori cuisine is enjoying a resurgence and traditional plants and ingredients, such as pikopiko (fern shoots), can be seen more often in contemporary dishes. Many of the tour options to Maori villages include the chance to try a succulent hangi – a traditional feast of meat and vegetables such as kumara and pumpkin, steamed in an underground pit heated by hot rocks. It takes several hours to cook and the end result has a delicious smoky flavour. Around town, there are more than 50 cafés and restaurants featuring everything from Indian and Moroccan to Italian, European and contemporary New Zealand cuisine. The lake end of Tutanekai Street is a good place to begin exploring, with plenty of options to suit everyone. Warm yourself with hearty pub food and a pint, or try some of the delicious kormas, kababs and tandoori dishes on offer at the town’s Indian eateries. You can tempt your tastebuds with tasty tagines and Moroccan tapas, authentic Italian dishes, succulent steaks, and even Japanese/French fusion fare. Sample awardwinning fine dining with a breathtaking view of Lake Rotorua, relax at a stylish café or bistro, enjoy the elegance and charm of a country lodge, or soak up the ambience of an English-style pub or Austrian Gasthaus. Anglers who want to land their own plump fish for dinner can arrange for a local restaurant to cook and serve it. For something a little different, you can even dine aboard a floating restaurant and enjoy the beautiful scenery as you cruise Lake Rotorua.

Health & Beauty Wellness & Spas

©Destination Rotorua Tourism Marketing

Rotorua has a long history as a famous spa resort, thanks to the natural therapeutic values of its geothermal springs and mud Maori were the first to discover the curative properties of the region’s hot springs and for more than a century, people have come to Rotorua from all over the world to enjoy the restorative benefits of its thermal water and mud. The city’s heritage Bath House, which now houses the Rotorua Museum, first opened back in 1908. In its heyday, it offered baths, mud treatments and other therapies to some 70,000 people a year. You can still bathe in the thermally heated waters at the restored Blue Baths and take a trip through the old changing rooms – now a museum bringing to life the building’s colourful spa history. Today, the city’s spas and beauty clinics continue to offer a full range of health spa and beauty treatments. Indulge in a luxurious Lithos (stone) massage or relax and enjoy the therapeutic qualities of a natural mud bath or mineral pool. The popular Polynesian Spa has a selection of 26 hot mineral baths perfect for relaxing those tense muscles and you can also enjoy the spa’s legendary Aix Spa massages. Spa at QE offers a range of contemporary treatments making use of the region’s mineral waters and mud. HEALTH & BEAUTY/WELLNESS & SPAS

Around Rotorua

Explore deep caverns with Waitomo Adventures ©Waitomo Adventures

Right at the heart of New Zealand’s most active volcanic zone, Taupo is famous the world over for its trout fishing and adventure, while Waitomo draws crowds with its magnificent limestone caves

Taupo Stunning scenery, thermal areas wreathed in steam and a host of outdoor pursuits from bungy jumping to jetboating make Taupo one of the country’s best-loved holiday destinations. In a region that stretches from Orakei Korako in the north, to magnificent Tongariro National Park in the south, you’ll find snowcapped mountains, the largest freshwater lake in Australasia, pristine native bush, bubbling mud pools and geysers, and one of the world’s only Dual World Heritage Areas. Walk the shores of Lake Taupo, New Zealand’s largest lake, take a scenic cruise or bushwalk, cast your line for a fat trout or get an adrenalin rush with a spot of extreme action. Topgun Paintball offers teambuilding fun with paintball and quadbike adventures, or head offroad with Taupo Quad Adventures. There is rafting and kayaking on the region’s rivers or opt for a close-up view of the thunderous Huka Falls and their churning, foam-capped waters with Huka Jet. Taupo Bungy enjoys one of the country’s most scenic locations, high above the Waikato River – the colour of the water alone is enough to inspire you to jump! You can jump aboard a chopper with Helipro for magnificent aerial views of Rotorua’s lakes and Tongariro National Park. North of Taupo is your chance to see some of the awesome volcanic activity that has shaped the region. The walk through the eerie lunar landscape of Craters of the Moon takes you past bubbling mud pools and steam vents. Wairakei Terraces, 10km to the north, has guided geothermal tours, or view the rare geothermal cave at Orakei Korako Thermal Park. At the end of the day, relax and enjoy a soak in the hot pools before dining at one of the region’s many restaurants and alfresco cafés.

Waitomo If you’re staying in Rotorua, then you’re just a jump away from one of New Zealand’s favourite attractions. Deep beneath the ground, the vast Waitomo Caves are full of eerie stalactites and stalagmites

lit by millions of tiny glowworms. Waitomo Cave houses the famous glowworm grotto, a magical experience that is not to be missed, or explore the beautiful Aranui and Ruakuri Caves with their swift flowing underground rivers and stunning limestone formations. For those wanting to challenge themselves, Waitomo Adventures offers five amazing adventure options to explore the caves that include walking, climbing, swimming, wading, abseiling and blackwater rafting (tubing), including the unique 100m abseil into the spectacular Lost World cavern. Above ground, you’ll find just as many activities to enjoy in Waitomo region, with horse treks, garden tours and scenic walks in the rolling Waikato countryside, as well as golfing and fishing. The Museum of Caves has interactive displays on the caves and how they were formed, as well as free brochures detailing bushwalks in the Waitomo area. Walkers will enjoy the 5km Waitomo Walkway which follows Waitomo Stream through classic limestone landscape to Ruakuri Scenic Reserve. While you’re in the area, be sure to pay a visit to New Zealand’s ‘kiwi town’, Otorohanga. The Otorohanga Kiwi House & Native Bird Park is a vital breeding centre for the endangered kiwi bird. Join a guided tour of the park’s nocturnal kiwi house for a guaranteed sighting then view native birds in a natural forest habitat at New Zealand’s original walk-through aviary.
