Welcome to our Inaugural Spring Bull Sale!

We have chosen to offer this year’s bulls at auction to give everyone equal opportunity to purchase the bull of their choice. The Online AuctionsPlus system is a wonderful tool being used in the seedstock selling industry. We decided to make use of it for three main reasons; • it eliminates the need for a physical auction on farm, • all the bulls being offered at once giving buyers time to make their decisions and also • due to the uncertainty of the ever changing Covid situation.

We have catalogued 28 big strong yearling bulls which we think can go out and do a job in any herd. We are increasingly proud of our cow herd and this line up is a real reflection of them. As we have been blessed with a wonderful season, the bulls have done extremely well. They have been grazing solely on pasture and supplemented only with silage and hay. The majority are AI calves by industry leading sires as well as our own walking sires, with many heifer bull options in the sale. Please take note that the bulls have been catalogued in order of tag number/age rather than type, so please be aware that the better bulls are scattered all through the lots.

As they are all offered online together lot order became less critical.

There is plenty of opportunity to inspect the bulls. We will hold an open day on Thursday 30th September from 1pm-4pm. The bulls will be penned on sale day from 11am and they will be available to view other times by appointment. We strongly encourage you to contact us if you need any more information about how the sale will run. Transport Free delivery within 250km. Outside of this we will endeavour to co-ordinate delivery. If bulls are needed ASAP, please let us know at the time of purchase.

Insurance There is no vendor insurance on the bulls. We recommend you insure all new bulls against injury and death. We will have information available on sale day to offer immediate cover.

Unfortunately, sale day places abnormal pressure on bulls so the behaviour of even the quietest bull can be unpredictable. The Benefits of Using Yearling Bulls Rossrich Angus has been using and selling yearling bulls for over 20 years. We believe if treated carefully yearlings can bring many added benefits to your program.

These include: • Accelerated Genetic gain • Improved cost of production. They are proven, on average, to have longer working lives.

• Easier to manage as they can settle in better to a new environment, mix with other cattle more easily and can be easier to handle than older bulls.

• They are fitter and more agile than older bulls and working at a younger age can help to keep them in superior fitness, creating lasting soundness and longevity.

• Extended use over heifers. Being a yearling does not make him a ‘heifer bull’. His effect on calving ease is determined by genetics, shape and other environmental factors. However suitable heifer bulls that are used as yearlings can mean fewer injuries to heifers and use over them for more years.

Nature intended bulls to work at 12-14 months of age. If well grown and in good condition this is when they become sexually mature. We manage them closely and test for reproductive soundness.

Using a bull as a yearling can impact his appearance (they can be a little too enthusiastic) but careful management can overcome this. Smaller mating loads in his first year (25-30 females), the quality of feed and the length of the joining period can help them long term.

In the words of reputable cattle producer and educator Sandy Yeates; “The value of a bull should be measured by the performance of his offspring, not on what he looks like”.

So, a common-sense approach and a little attention post joining can set your bull up for a long and productive life.

Taking Delivery of Your New Bull The bulls have always been run in a large mob and have never been alone. It’s a good idea to have some of your own cattle in the yards when your new bull arrives. A few steers, PTIC cows or even an old bull to keep him company while he settles in. At Rossrich we handle our cattle quietly and with respect.
