When We’re Gone. ‘Art Of.’ Premise & Minor. By Jasmine Mast ers.

Premise.

Premise Proposals. Originally, I was planning to base my Premise off an old folktale but found I couldn’t come up with much that inspired me and found it really difficult to see how I could adapt an old folktale. So after reassessing what I enjoy and what I would like to focus on I decided to looked more at environmental storytelling and world building. By doing this it will allow me to focus on environmental design and world building to help communicate past/present events to the viewer.

“What If?” To start with I looked at coming up with some ‘what if?’ scenarios to help build a foundation platform to work from. In addition to this I also collected visual research to help introduce themes and a variety of ideas to draw upon.

I ni t ial Proposals. Proposal 1 - Nat ure Based.

➢ - Plants, Aquatic Animals, Green Houses – Focus on Summery Lighting/Glowing Plant ascents, texturing and modelling.

Proposal 2 – I n t erior Design.

➢ - House interiors and possible exteriors – Focus on indoor lighting, texturing and modelling.

Proposal 3 – Dystopian Socie t ies. ➢ - Creating Indoor and outdoor exteriors using ideas of cyber/steampunk elements to create a collapsing society.

The Scenario: A society where rebels/activists revolt against the use of nuclear power because of its effects on the earth, they try and ‘save’ the earth by shutting down the nuclear power plants; only to make the situation worse as the power plants aren’t shut down correctly and nuclear reactions occur causing the power plants to explode (this would be a mass attack on power plants across the globe). Meanwhile; underneath all the chaos, there are a group of scientists that are striving to build a conservation ship in preparation to leave earth with plant and organism samples to cultivate in space. The story would be set years into the future where the earth has regained its vegetation from the nuclear explosions with noticeable lack of human colonization in large cities. Those who remain resort to using drones to surveil and scout the cities nearby for potential resources and to monitor the radioactivity within the area. – taking inspiration from Chernobyl/ Fukushima and the nuclear bomb attack on Nagasaki and Hiroshima in 1945 (WW2).

Initial Designs. Started with some initial sketches based off the new conceit and started to design an over grown town and some ruined buildings.

Initial Designs. I also looked at some initial ideas for the rebel group, focusing on the idea of graffiti and scare mongering tactics to sway people into submission of the regime.

Establishing t he Town. To help establish t he world I am creat ing, I first looked at conceptualizing the town in which the animated short takes place. This came wi t h inven t ing a town name and t he t ype of town in which t he story takes place. Here I decided to go with a small to medium size town filled with small local businesses t hat would have cat ered to t he locals. I n addi t ion to t his I also thought of the t ime set ting/feel the town would have; for this I decided to go wi t h a re t ro 1970 -80’s feel where design played a huge feature in shop front design that then married up wi th the typography and other graphics seen on shops in that era .

List of names I liked. • • • • • • • • • • •

Town and Service Names.

Hartset -> Harret Set. The town name I found was a bi t harder to create and come up wi th. To help aid the town naming process I used a random name generator for places in - Harre t Se t Laboratories and Conservat ion Cen t er. the world (some real, some made up and other places that came from ei ther - Harre t Se t Tailors and Co . fo lklore and fan tasy wo rlds) w i t h t his I w en t t hrough t he pro cess to see what names the generator came up wi th. From there I then picked out names I liked the sound of and made them into a list to see what I was working St ree t Names: wi th. I then picked out the names I thought could work wi thin my small Chelmsmound to wn, t his included reworking so me t he names to see t he effect/ge t a feel Chelmsmound Valley → Chelmsmound Terrace for the name; either as a town name or and street name . Street. I n t he end, I chose t he go wi t h t he adapted version of t he name Terrace. ‘ H a r t s e t ’ ( H a r r e t S e t ) f o r t h e t o w n n a m e ; w h e r e I c o u l d t h e n a p p ly t h i s Way. some of my town shops and street names. Shop Fronts Designs Pt 1. In addition to rounding off the concept designs, I looked at prepping my shop front and miscellaneous building designs ready for when I start to model them fully in Maya. This also included orthographs for each key building.

Wi t h t h e d ro n e I wan t ed i t to be small and compact wi t h a way to move about; ei ther wi t h t urbines or wings and to have some sort of camera/screen to v ie w i t ' s s urro und ings, as well as have some sort of extendable arm to be able to move/nudge things within the scene.

Solidifying the Drone Design. Since I intend to have at having a d rone w i t h older model and one is drone to be a bi t more fron t face of t he drone

I also looked at compressing t he c ompac t an d ap p e ar l es s c lunky , to do t h is I s hort ened t h e and rearranged t he fron t componen ts/add -ons.

I n addi t ion to t his I also considered how t he back of t he drone could be used to iden t ify t he drone model, as well at working ou t/adapt ing what t he drones are going to be called (also not ed on t he page before).

Moving on to Pre -Vis. Ge t ting ready to move onto reworking my Pre-Vis from premise, I begun by reworking my laboratory layout to help simplify some of the camera movemen ts. To do this I’ve looked at moving my Lab tower to the back of the building, so this will mean as the camera enters the building i t will have to t r av e l d o w n a h a l lway t o t h e t o w e r s t a i rc a s e ; h e r e I in tend to have the generator room as a side asse t so i t w i l l b e m o r e o f a f ly - b y a s t h e c a m e r a m ov e s o n Original Premise Design. to the upper floors
