Thank you for supporting these talented JASA artists!
In this catalog, you will see work from members of our programs across New York City. Some artists are professionals and others are newer to the craft, having picked up a paintbrush or knitting needles for the first time at a JASA art class. Each artist shares one common goal: for their hard work to support JASA and the 40,000 older adults we serve each year.
Art programming is one of the ways we combat social isolation while fostering creativity. The results are magnificent.
All funds received from the purchase of artwork will go to support JASA services.

Eva, originally from Warsaw, Poland, has lived in New York City for 14 years. She left Poland with a master’s degree in art and initially sought work in nonprofit organizations. However, she ended up in advertising.
Now new to JASA, she enjoys painting landscapes and loves the nearby beaches for their lighting and vibrant colors. She feels at home at Brookdale Village, referring to her neighborhood as "Little Europe" because of its diverse population, where many languages are spoken.
Eva appreciates the friendly and supportive community, especially as she considers the challenges of aging. She values the helpfulness of others, including home attendants, and enjoys the sense of belonging that comes from being part of a close-knit community.

Frances has always lived in Brooklyn, where she was born and raised. She worked in accounting for more than 50 years and retired in 2013. Frances has always loved art; her parents were also creative. She started taking art classes and participating in other activities such as making clothes, aquarium activities, and going to the gym with JASA.
JASA has been a great support for Frances, especially in difficult times. When her daughter passed away due to COVID, JASA staff were there to support her. She appreciates that the staff at her older adult center care about their clients. Frances is grateful for JASA's help and support.
“They call and show you love. I know that I am not alone with JASA.”
Marie is Brooklyn born and raised. As a transplant to the Rockaways, she was looking for activities to join and found them at the JASA Roy Reuther Older Adult Center, where her mother lived in the building. Marie encouraged her mother to sign up at the center and to take part in the various classes. While her mother has since passed away, Marie volunteers at the center, and leads some of the art and fabric-making classes.
“I first heard about JASA in The Wave, a local newspaper. I was inspired by my family and surroundings, and when I had free time I started knitting and crocheting. I love living here by the water. It’s relaxing. Sometimes all you want to do is make a bracelet, make a chain; you don’t have to rush to do anything.”
Marie sells some of the jewelry she makes at flea markets outside of her building. “I just like art. I like to work with my hands. My father used to draw and my brother used to do the same thing. It’s a family tradition that we all work with our hands.”
Dionicia was born in Panama and moved to New York City in 1976. She became a member of JASA’s Starrett City Older Adult Center a year ago after a former coworker introduced her to the center. Since then, she has immersed herself in the community, especially in creative and wellness-focused activities.
A lifelong crocheter, Dionicia learned the craft as a young girl from her mother and grandmother, as well as in elementary school. Today, she shares her passion by teaching a crochet class at Starrett City OAC. Over the years, she has made a variety of projects, from baby blankets and throws to sweaters.
Beyond crafting, Dionicia also participates in tai chi, enjoying its slow-paced, meditative movements. She encourages newcomers to explore the center’s many offerings, emphasizing that there’s something for everyone, no matter their interests.
Joyce was born and raised in the Bronx, New York. She spent her career working as an administrative manager for the commissioner. She learned about the JASA Brookdale Village Older Adult Center through word of mouth.
One of Joyce's favorite activities at the center is the crochet class. She has been crocheting since she was a little girl, learning from her mother. Joyce now teaches the crochet classes to other seniors at the center. She loves working with her hands and sharing her knowledge with others.
Joyce enjoys attending the JASA center because it provides opportunities to meet new people, attend parties, go on trips, play pool, and join Zumba classes.
