DEAR FRIEND, This year, JASA served more than 40,000 older New Yorkers and their families.

The seniors we have the privilege to serve come from all backgrounds, all cultures, and all walks of life. In the stories you’ll read inside this report, you’ll feel their pride in their accomplishments, the depth of their grief in losing a beloved partner, the isolation and strain that comes with caring for a parent or spouse, disappointment in life’s misfortunes, and the physical challenges that so often accompany the process of aging.

We want you to know their names and see their faces. It’s hard to predict who’s going to need JASA at some point in their life. These amazing individuals are not defined by their struggles but by their strength and resilience.

JASA seniors want what anyone wants: respect, connection, empathy, and security. Through our diverse 20+ services, we ensure the core needs of older New Yorkers: social connection, economic security, food security, physical and mental health, safety at home, safe housing, and protection from abuse and neglect. And these needs being met, seniors are finding joy, meaning, and purpose. How fortunate we are to do this work!

JASA is engaging in a strategic planning effort to strengthen our organization and our ability to respond and innovate as social infrastructure evolves and the aging population continues to grow.

Clara lives in a safe, secure, and accessible apartment in JASA’s Affordable Housing. JASA owns and manages 11 buildings with on-site social services.

David receives nutritious and life-sustaining Home-Delivered Meals every day. JASA’s team of nutritionists, drivers, and social workers deliver meals directly to older adults’ homes.

Joanne receives respite from JASA’s Caregiver Support program that serves those caring for ill or disabled older adults.

The program offers support groups, respite services, and referrals.

RongXian happily attends group activities, trips, special events, and enjoys meals at his local Older Adult Center.

Center programming also includes art, health, exercise, and computer classes.

Pierre enjoys recreation, education, health services, and social work support as a resident of his Naturally Occurring Retirement Community (NORC) - community or building complexes where many residents are 60+.

Joseph connects with a pastoral counselor through JASA’s Senior Community Connection (SCC), which offers a wide range of short-term intensive case management services, including a registered nurse and pastoral counseling.

Ray leads health workshops through JASA’s Chronic Disease Management program that trains individuals with diabetes, high blood pressure, and other chronic conditions to manage their own illnesses and assist their peers.

Geraldine has assistance navigating the complicated healthcare system. The Care Transitions program helps patients transition from hospital to home, to prevent avoidable hospital readmissions.

Alvin has a healthcare plan through Health Home, a program for individuals with Medicaid and two or more chronic conditions.

Arlene receives help dealing with her husband’s illness. JASA’s Long Island Center for Dignity and Support helps individuals and their families facing a life-limiting or advanced illness, or coping with a recent loss.

Evelyn and Al connect for weekly conversations through JASAChat, which matches volunteers with older adults to reduce social isolation.

Kris takes college-level courses through Sundays at JASA, which offers a variety of courses and lectures on politics, the arts, media, and more.

Zapopa receives support through Adult Protective Services (APS). APS is called into crisis situations where an adult’s safety is at risk due to complications caused by isolation, exploitation, loss of physical health and/or mental alertness.

JASA’s Help Center and NY Connects answer thousands of calls and provide referrals, information, guidance, and resources about aging.

Housing Clara met the man who would become her husband when she was 13 years old and living in Spanish Harlem.

He was her best friend’s next door neighbor. Now they’ve been married for 40 years. She says her secret to a long, happy marriage is patience, humor and communication.

Once their kids came along, Clara retired from her job as a law secretary to take care of their growing family.

In 2012, Clara and her husband were living in Staten Island when their rental house was destroyed by Hurricane Sandy. They went into the shelter system, where Clara’s husband caught an infection that placed him in the hospital for more than a month. With reduced finances and no home of their own, Clara and her husband moved from shelter to shelter for 11 years.

She says it was a “nightmare.”

Clara connected with JASA and soon she and her husband moved into a safe, affordable apartment of their own. JASA staff helped Clara and her husband furnish their apartment - making sure they had a real mattress to sleep on instead of the blow-up bed they were using and many other useful household items.

JASA staff continues to check in on them regularly making sure all of their needs are met. Clara says the staff made her feel welcome, comfortable, and safe.

JASA owns, manages, and operates 11 affordable housing buildings. JASA is an industry leader in providing safe, affordable, and accessible apartments for more than 2,400 older adults and disabled individuals.

All buildings include on-site social services and activities, with staff fluent in a variety of languages.

JASA’s properties are enhanced by planned capital improvements and green energy initiatives.

David was a trader on Wall Street for over 20 years. He was working at the World Trade Center on 9/11. David was on the 8th floor of the North Tower when the first plane hit and he immediately started running. He was on the Brooklyn Bridge by the time the second plane hit. He lost a lot of friends that day.

David lives alone and doesn’t have a wife or children; he describes himself as stubborn and independent.

When he was hospitalized for a back injury, he was connected to JASA’s Home-Delivered Meals program.

Two years ago, he was walking across the street with his birthday cake, and he was hit by a car. JASA’s social workers were again there to help. David says the meals are really good and everyone at JASA treats him royally. He says that staff go above and beyond, for example, opening up cans that they know he has trouble opening. He appreciates that they check in on him and treat him with respect.

JASA’s team of nutritionists, drivers, and social workers deliver meals directly to the homes of seniors. Many clients depend on the daily meal that JASA delivers as their primary meal. Too frequently, our meal deliverers are their only social contact during the day. JASA’s team sees clients daily, knows their routines, and knows when something is wrong. JASA’s Home-Delivered meals staff continue to ensure that seniors have the meals that they need and deserve and that wellness checks are performed daily to ensure the client’s safety. Beyond the ready-to-eat meals, the program also provides supplemental shelf-stable meals to ensure that clients have enough food at home.

OV ERHE A R D AT JASA : What I find difficult about aging, especially as a caregiver, is social isolation. Most of my time is spent caring for someone who may not remember who I am an hour from now. I don't get out much these days. It's hard because I have no one in my circle of friends or family who can relate or identify with what I am experiencing, and it can be lonely at times. JASA’s Caregiver Support group is a place where I can talk to people who are experiencing the same thing.

Caregiver Support Joanne is a retired teacher. She enjoys visiting museums, going on walks, and reading books when she can. She has one son who lives in Australia with his wife and two children. When Joanne’s father passed away 20 years ago, her mother moved up from Florida. Joanne’s mother is now 101 and needs more of her help. She’s wheelchair-bound and has multiple medical conditions.

When the pandemic hit, Joanne moved in with her mother to help her. Being a caregiver to her mother was something she was happy to do, but it also came with a lot of challenges. Caregiving can often be a 24/7 job and she struggled to find some time for herself.

She hasn’t been on vacation in three years, or had the opportunity to meet her young grandchildren.

When her mother fractured her hip and shoulder, Joanne contacted JASA and found out about the Caregiver Respite program. A JASA social worker connected her with resources: group respite for her mother and home care agencies. Joanne says the first time her mother went to the group respite program, she was so relieved for the break that she cried.

The role of caregiver to an ill or disabled family member can arise unexpectedly. The healthcare system is complicated, costly, and overwhelming.

JASA’s caregiver support program offers caregivers a roadmap, support, and resources. JASA’s flexible approach provides in-home care by trained aides as well as out-of-the home socialization at day centers.

JASA also connects caregivers with other services, including meals, transportation services, and older adult centers.

RongXian grew up in mainland China, and came to the United States more than 30 years ago. He lives in Brooklyn, where he met his wife and they raised their two children. After many years as an electrician with the same company, he recently retired. A friend told him about a JASA center that needed help setting up karaoke equipment. With his technical expertise and time to finally pursue his passion of singing, RongXian joined the center.

He now runs the weekly Chinese karaoke group, and has invited friends and other community members to sing songs in their native languages. He joins most mornings for exercise, and enjoys spending time with friends. RongXian loves to be active, and his JASA center gives him the opportunity to keep moving.

Thousands of older adults attend JASA’s 17 older adult centers each year, relying on JASA for daily lunch, social interaction, classes, and trips. JASA offers inperson, virtual, and hybrid classes, with more than 150 total classes offered each week and available to seniors all over the city.

JASA’s older adult centers across the Bronx, Brooklyn, Manhattan, and Queens offer vibrant meeting places to socialize with friends, share a meal, participate in arts and cultural programs, and celebrate life events.

Senior center programming includes intergenerational activities, computer classes, health screenings, exercise sessions, and special interest discussion groups.

Mental Health Beatrice Jean has always loved children. Whether it was her job as a paraprofessional working with children in public schools, or way back at the young age of five years old when she announced that she wanted to be a mother. She was married twice and has eight children, eight grandchildren, and 12 great-grandchildren. She loves to sing gospel music, draw, and write.

Over the years, three of Beatrice Jean’s children have passed away. Her grief was unimaginable. One of her friends had a son who had passed away and she recommended JASA’s Friendship House, a group program for older adults dealing with mental illness.

Beatrice Jean decided to join as well. She says she found a place she belongs, where everyone in the group cares so much about each other. She attends the various programs at the Friendship House and really enjoys the sessions in meditation, exercise, art, stretching, poetry, and more.

JASA’s mental health services include: (1) JASA’s Friendship Houses, which offer a welcoming environment for older adults recovering from mental illnesses; (2) JASA’s Geriatric Mental Health Outpatient Treatment Services staffed by licensed mental health professionals who provide individual and group therapy and medication; and (3) JASA’s Program to Encourage Active, Rewarding Lives for Seniors (PEARLS), an evidence-based program, which aims to reduce depression and improve quality of life for older adults.

Leonid lives in Queens, where he was a pharmacist.

When he was 17 years old he was in an accident. He was riding his bike without a helmet and was hit by a car. He spent years recovering with physical therapy.

Unfortunately, that was only the beginning of his health problems.

Years later, Leonid was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis. These days he doesn’t walk well, so he uses a scooter or wheelchair. Sometimes his arms have trouble too. His parents, immigrants from Ukraine, are there to support him every step of the way and helped him make his apartment wheelchair accessible. But Leonid began to need additional help.

Over a year ago, Leonid found JASACare, JASA’s home care division, and now has two home care aides to provide 24/7 care. Leonid says the aides help him with everything he needs. They do the cooking and cleaning, as well as helping him with bathing, dressing, and getting in and out of bed. They take him shopping and go to events, and join him when he visits his family.

Leonid highly recommends JASA - he says his aides are very warm and really care.

JASA’s home care clients are homebound, and most receive care to help with medical conditions and health concerns. JASA helps these clients remain safely in their homes and out of hospitals. JASA’s home care services provide home health aides, personal care assistance, and nursing services to enable those coping with health and daily living challenges, recovering from an accident, or dealing with a disability to remain in their homes.

Case Management Dehouti, age 75, was born and raised in Guyana. She has lived in Brooklyn for over 30 years. Dehouti and her husband married in 1966. They are Hindu, and have three children. She has a very loving and close-knit family. Her daughter visits her daily. Two of her children live in Queens. When her children and grandchildren visit, they enjoy watching television, sharing meals, and going on outings.

In 2003, Dehouti was in a car accident. She was in the hospital for just over a month. Her foot is still in a lot of pain and she regularly goes for physical therapy. She said that life is very tough for her. She tries her best to remain independent, but due to poor health, she is not able to do as much as she used to on her own. When her husband went through health issues as well, she connected with JASA’s Case Management program.

The social workers arranged for her and her husband to have home-delivered meals, and connected them to other benefits and services as well as financial assistance. When Dehouti misplaced her citizenship document, a JASA social worker helped her replace it.

Dehouti says that she loves JASA and she honestly does not know what she would do without her social worker.

Michael lived in Staten Island for most of his life. He worked in the dry cleaning business for over 20 years.

After past struggles with drug addiction, he has been sober for 27 years.

One day he was on the bus and had a stroke. Michael woke up in the hospital and he couldn’t see. He was blind for four years before his vision returned. While he was in the hospital, he couldn’t work. He lost his job and his apartment. He says one day he was on top of the world and the next he felt like it was all over. After that his medical issues continued - he was diagnosed with prostate cancer. He says he learned to be strong and to start to care less about material things.

Michael did not have a home to call his own for a few years. When he heard that there was an opening at an affordable housing building in Brooklyn, he interviewed for an apartment and moved in within two weeks. JASA’s Residential Services team helped him settle in. They assisted with transportation to doctor’s appointments and connected him with benefits such as food assistance.

Michael says since moving to his apartment, his life has changed for the better and his health improved.

JASA provides Residential Services at 16 senior affordable apartment buildings. Three different programs increase housing accessibility and offer supportive services for low-income tenants and formerly homeless seniors: Housing and Urban Development (HUD) Service Coordination, Senior Affordable Rental Apartments (SARA), and New York State’s Empire State Supportive Housing Initiative (ESSHI). These programs provide a range of case management services, group programming, and they increase social connection.

Legal Services Desiree* grew up in West Virginia and came to New York at the age of 19. She was a nurse for over 60 years. She has a large beautiful family, and loves cooking for them.

Due to her ex-husband, Desiree was in debt. She wanted to take out a loan on her home to pay off the debts. Her daughter knew someone in real estate. The woman, Ms. Grace, earned Desiree's trust over multiple conversations, dinners, and visits to church. Ms. Grace convinced Desiree to have Ms. Grace’s friend Jason sign on the loan with Desiree, since he had a high credit score, and then once they got the loan, he would take his name off. Desiree trusted Ms. Grace and agreed. A year later, Desiree started getting notices about different loans from a bank. She found out that Jason did not remove his name, had taken out more loans and used her house as collateral, before selling her home to one of Ms. Grace’s relatives. Desiree was unable to get in touch with Ms. Grace after that.

That’s when JASA’s Legal Services for Elder Justice (LSEJ) lawyers took on the case. It was complicated: there were three different cases, including two foreclosure cases and a case to restore title back to Desiree. The process took years. After multiple court dates and appeals, JASA’s team of lawyers helped Desiree - she will finally get back the house in her name. Finally, all the mortgages that the scammers had taken out on her home – stealing hundreds of thousands of dollars - have been voided.

Alice* was a Zumba instructor and also worked in various administrative roles. She loves traveling and exercising. Alice has two adult children who both moved in with her during the pandemic. Her son is addicted to drugs. Soon after he moved in, he began to emotionally, psychologically, and verbally abuse Alice. As a result, Alice experienced severe anxiety and depression. That’s when she connected with JASA’s Elder Justice program.

A JASA social worker provided supportive counseling, referred her to therapy, and helped her make a safety plan. With ongoing support and encouragement, Alice focused on her overall wellness. She began going to the gym, eating healthier, and reconnecting with family and friends. Alice gained the confidence and tools to set boundaries with her son and stopped focusing on his needs. She says until she received the support from JASA she did not have the strength to stand up to her son’s abuse. Her son has moved out, and Alice is now safe in her home. She is grateful for the support provided by JASA. Elder abuse, neglect, and exploitation are underreported and widespread. For over 20 years, JASA’s innovative Elder Justice program has utilized a team approach that has helped tens of thousands of victims successfully resolve crisis situations. JASA staff mobilize all community resources – the court system, social services, health providers, police – to ensure the individual’s ongoing safety. JASA’s Elder Justice services include social work calls; mutual aid peer support groups; case assistance; safety planning, which includes referrals to other community agencies; legal services; and advocacy for accessing the civil court system.

Naturally Occurring Retirement Community (NORC) Program Pierre moved to Brooklyn from Haiti 40+ years ago. He was a police officer and used to patrol Coney Island and Brighton Beach. He has three children - a son who is a doctor, one daughter who is a teacher, and one daughter who is a nurse. His wife passed away last year.

Pierre enjoys dancing and making new friends. He says when he was younger he enjoyed going to parties.

Over 10 years ago, Pierre’s friend from church recommended JASA’s NORC (Naturally Occurring Retirement Community) program and since then he goes almost every day. Pierre says it is so important to stay active and do things. He attends JASA’s exercise classes and dancing classes and enjoys going on trips with the seniors in his community. Most of all, he loves making new friends, and he loves making people laugh. He says he’ll go up to a group of people and start telling jokes. He says he tells all of his friends about the NORC program.

JASA embraces the NORC (Naturally Occurring Retirement Community) model as an effective community-based partnership approach to help adults age in place and strengthen the neighborhoods in which they live. Services include individualized social work assistance and nursing support, group programming, intergenerational events, and volunteer and leadership opportunities. Program staff also offer information and assistance to help older residents secure benefits and entitlements, transportation to medical appointments, home care, and homedelivered meals.

Joseph was married to his wife Sylvia for 62 years.

When he saw her for the first time, he fell instantly in love. Joseph says that, “God must have loved me for bringing her into my life.” He was so taken with her that he got a D in one of his college classes, because he couldn’t concentrate. The secret to their long marriage is simple, he says: they just belonged together.

Joseph was born and raised in Brooklyn - where he still lives today at the age of 91. He was in the Navy for four years before going to college and getting his Master’s degree. Sylvia was a nurse and had a PhD. She ran two operating rooms in two different hospitals over the course of her career. Together, they had two children and four grandchildren.

Sylvia recently passed away. Joseph has been devastated. “Every nook and cranny” in the house reminds him of her. Joseph was connected to JASA’s Senior Community Connection (SCC) program. The pastoral counselor provided emotional support to help Joseph through the grieving process. Joseph says his conversations with the pastoral counselor have been very therapeutic and that her insights are unbelievable.

JASA’s Senior Community Connection Project (SCC) offers short-term intensive case management, including comprehensive in-home or in-office assessment, service planning and connection to assistance, benefits and entitlements, and other relevant interventions by social workers, case managers, a registered nurse, and a pastoral counselor.

Chronic Disease Management Ray moved to New York City as a teenager from South Carolina. She loves playing bingo and cards and watching TV. Ray has one daughter and one grandson who live near her in Brooklyn. When Ray was around 30 years old she lost her eyesight - she said it was a very scary time. That’s when she discovered she had diabetes. Her vision came back after a month, but when she returned home she had to learn to follow a strict diet and take medication.

Eight years ago, Ray joined JASA’s Chronic Disease Management program. She participated in trainings about how to manage chronic diseases like diabetes and arthritis and how to be a community leader.

Ray says these workshops helped her learn how to manage her diabetes better.

Since then Ray has been helping her fellow seniors with chronic diseases in many ways. She leads health workshops, and has educated more than 150 of her peers. Ray runs blood pressure monitoring programs and walking programs. She visits other seniors in their homes to make meal plans, help them remember to take their medications, provide information on healthy eating and benefits of a whole foods plant-based diet.

Ray says it makes her feel good to help people learn how they can manage their illnesses and live a full life.

JASA’s Chronic Disease Management peer-to-peer program trains individuals with diabetes, high blood pressure, pain and other chronic conditions to manage their own illnesses and teach these skills to their peers in the community. JASA provides evidence-based group programs as well as one-on-one coaching to empower older adults to proactively participate in their own health and healthcare.

Geraldine is 101 years old. She has lived in Brooklyn her whole life, and still goes to church when she’s able to get there. Geraldine majored in accounting and economics and had jobs working for her church, the federal government, city government, and the Board of Education. She traveled all over the world on cruises with her husband and their group of friends from the church.

Geraldine was married to the love of her life for 50 years - he passed away a few years ago. Now she lives alone. She has many health challenges: hypertension, asthma, COPD, and osteoporosis. After a hospital stay, Geraldine’s insurance connected her to JASA’s Care Transitions program. The care transitions specialist helped Geraldine manage her conditions, instructed her on how to keep her medications in order, taught her how to prevent falls, and accompanied her to medical appointments. JASA also connected her to home care services, JASAChat for social connection, and physical therapy. Geraldine says she is "quite pleased" with the wonderful JASA staff.

JASA’s Care Transitions program helps high-risk patients transition from hospital to home, with the goal of preventing avoidable hospital readmissions. JASA partners with hospitals and health plans to provide targeted interventions that offer the social support each individual needs to live at home while staying healthy.

The program is led by International Medical Graduates (IMGs), who have gone to medical school overseas and share the cultures and languages of many patients.

JASA currently delivers the program in English, Spanish, Chinese, Russian, Haitian Creole, French, Hindi, Ukrainian, Urdu, Punjabi, and Igbo and emphasizes cultural understanding, in-language communication and building trusted relationships.

Health Home Alvin grew up in Guyana and moved to Brooklyn in 1993. He was excited to come to the “land of the free and the home of the brave.” After moving to New York, Alvin worked in construction, and then as a driver.

His hobbies include music - he was a DJ in his home country - and fitting cars with stereo equipment.

Two years ago while driving, someone hit his car from behind. He was in surgery for 12 hours. Alvin’s spine did not heal completely. He became disabled and is no longer able to drive. In addition to health struggles, this caused financial challenges and Alvin had trouble paying the rent.

He was connected to JASA’s Health Home program for older adults with multiple chronic health conditions.

A JASA social worker helped him apply for the Emergency Rental Assistance Program (ERAP). She also arranged for a home care aide to visit him and helped him with transportation.

JASA’s Health Home program is for individuals that have Medicaid and two or more chronic health conditions. When clients are enrolled, a care plan is created and staff work closely with the client to complete the plan, which evolves with the client’s needs.

Arlene met Stanley when he was an usher at the theater where her sister was a singer. He asked her out to lunch and the rest is history. They have been married for 55 years and have two daughters and six grandchildren.

Arlene was a Spanish teacher and Stanley worked in jewelry. Arlene and Stanley love playing cards together and have traveled the world.

Several years ago, Stanley was diagnosed with advanced dementia. After Stanley was in the hospital, Arlene was overwhelmed and needed help. One of their daughters told them to reach out to JASA. JASA’s Palliative Care team jumped in and assisted with everything from finding home care to counseling to coordinating with medical providers. Arlene says the team worked with her closely in order to give Stanley the best quality of life possible.

Some days Stanely recognizes Arlene, and other days he doesn’t. Even when he doesn’t remember his family, he is always overjoyed to see them when they visit. Arlene says nothing has brought her greater joy than her family.

She says that JASA staff are her backbone and a calming presence in her life.

JASA’s Long Island Center for Dignity and Support (LICDS) makes calls and home visits to provide counseling, care management, spiritual care, information and referrals, entitlements counseling, care coordination, advance care planning, and assistance in navigating the healthcare system for timely and appropriate care. They help clients and their families cope with end-of-life issues, grief, and bereavement and connect families to a vast network of specialized and culturally sensitive services and resources.

LICDS provides assistance with entitlements, referrals, and case management. Interventions are done by palliative care social workers and a registered nurse using a person-centered, trauma-informed approach.

JASAChat Evelyn moved to New York City from South Carolina when she was 9 years old. She worked as a nurse's aid.

When she retired 9 years ago, she joined one of JASA’s older adult centers, visiting every day. She enjoys spending time with her friends there as well as playing bingo, dancing, and going to exercise classes.

Al moved to New York City right before the pandemic to start a job at the NBA. When Covid hit, she felt lucky to keep her job and her home. She wanted to figure out how she could give back. Her company sent out an email about JASAChat. She was immediately interested and signed up to have weekly phone calls with an older adult. She attended a training with JASA social workers, and felt prepared going into her first conversation with Evelyn.

Evelyn and Al describe their first phone conversation as being really comfortable. They connected over their faith. During the early days of the pandemic, their conversations brought comfort. Since that first chat they have talked about everything going on in their lives. They have now been chatting weekly for over three years, and attended the JASA Art Show together.

JASAChat was launched in March 2020. What started out as a three month time commitment has led to matches celebrating their 3+ year JASAChat anniversaries. Real, long-lasting friendships have formed through the program. Older adults have also felt empowered by having a positive impact on their volunteer’s lives.

Kris is 69 and grew up in Greenpoint, Brooklyn. Her parents lived in Poland during World War II - her mother was taken to a labor camp, and her father was in the army. They escaped Europe and moved to New York when Kris was young. She never had children, but has a "soul family" that includes two daughters and four grandchildren.

Kris loves art, music, and reading newspapers and mystery novels. She enjoys walking around the entire city, especially Central Park. She once walked 234 miles over the course of a month! Before she retired, Kris had a career in Human Resources working in office management, payroll, and benefits. She is proud of the work she did connecting with people.

One day Kris saw an advertisement for Sundays at JASA and noticed a class on opera. She was interested and signed up for the program, a lecture class taught by a bona fide opera diva. Even though she knew a lot about opera, Kris was excited to learn about it from the perspective of someone who had performed all over the world. Now when she listens to opera at home, she appreciates it more. She highly recommends Sundays at JASA to any seniors who are interested in high level classes with expert professors.

JASA engages adults age 55+ who are seeking stimulating and fun ways to pursue learning through Sundays at JASA, our signature college-level continuing education program. Adult Protective Services (APS) and Community Guardian Program (CGP) When Zapopa moved to New York City, she ended up in two homeless shelters before she moved to her current apartment in Manhattan. She loves to sing, listen to music, and explore the city. She has one younger brother who lives in Nevada, who is her only close family.

Zapopa had a hard time managing her finances, paying her rent, and keeping her home organized and clean.

She was also struggling with mental health; she was diagnosed with bipolar disorder. That’s when she was connected to JASA’s Adult Protective Services (APS) program. A JASA social workers helped her apply for benefits to assist with paying rent, and provided heavy duty cleaning. JASA APS also helped her manage her finances to prevent the risk of future eviction. Zapopa says that JASA helped her get her life together. She relies on her social workers for continued check-ins, and is able to live a happy and healthy life in the community.

JASA has two programs that help safeguard the frailest and most vulnerable New Yorkers: Adult Protective Services and the Community Guardian Program.

Adult Protective Services is called into crisis situations where an adult’s safety is at risk due to complications caused by isolation, exploitation, loss of physical health and/or mental alertness. The court appoints JASA’s Community Guardian Program (CGP) to the legal role of guardian for those who have been judged incapacitated and have no family or friends who are able or willing to take on the role. CGP provides legal assistance, financial management, and social services to help clients manage crisis situations such as evictions, domestic abuse/exploitation, hoarding, and other unsafe living scenarios.

Using a holistic approach, these programs provide referrals within the organization as well as connect seniors with other available services: (1) The Sally and Henry Pearce Help Center is a free consultation service that answers inquiries from older New Yorkers, their adult children, concerned family members, neighbors, friends, and professionals; (2) NY Connects is a statewide resource for older adults and people of all ages with disabilities who are seeking long-term services and support. JASA operates NY Connects in Brooklyn .
