GAILANXI RESIDENCE

[ Winter 2016 ] High-rise Residential Complex Choqing | China

6

I modelled most of the buildings in this render.

Bird View Render 7

In this residential project, I focused on the residential development as well as the final presentation slideshow. I was responsible for 3D modelling most of the residential towers. During the final production phase, I worked on analytical diagrams and sections uing AutoCAD and Photoshop as well as compiling and designing the layout of presentation slideshows.

BY THE TREES

[ Summer 2016 ] Truth And Reconciliation Working Group Headquarter Pine Cove | French River, Canada

10

The building holds a program of the Truth and Reconciliation Working Group Headquarters, which is an organization by the parties to the Indian Residential Schools Settlement Agreement. Through different activities, its goal is to bring the federal and provincial governments and Indigenous nations of Canada into a reconciled state for the future. This project hopes to establish an intimate and interactive relationship with the trees around while protecting them in the site. The structure, its adherent material, and the branches and leafs of tress interweave together to present atmosphere of each space. It is designed to be a work collaborated by both architecture and nature. The one-storey-building is composed by three independent structures that are linked by bridges, in Y or L shapes stretched horizontally between the trees. 12 pieces of combined steel and concrete wall piers support the upper structures. They are all covered by reflective stainless steel panels, which contain all the vertical ducts and reflect the surrounding green environment.

The site locates to the south of French river, with a tributary on its west. It is considered as a heavily forested area as the exposed rock mostly concentrated on the shore line/bank line of the river. teractive relationship with the trees around while protecting them in the site. 1

This is a steel structure building mainly supported by a system of steel square HSS arranged accordingly in floor plan. Concrete beams and transfer beams are composed into the ground floor framing system which is supported by the concrete wall pier. The skin of the building is composed of mainly two materials: glass curtain wall and wood cladding. Wood cladding is arranged to have different intensity not only for architectural aesthetic and programmatic reason, but also to reduce solar heat gain at some places.

French River area has a relative cold climate, thus insulation and control layers are important to the design. As a result, double glazing windows are used in curtain wall system. Two or even three panes of glass are used to construct a sealed structure with an air gap in between the panes. As air is a good insulator of heat, this design reduces the conduction of heat effectively. Low-e coatings are further applied on windows. They are thin, almost invisible metal oxide or semiconductor films. It reflects back the long wavelength radiation (infrared) emitted by warm objects while allowing shorter wavelengths (visible light) to pass through. In cold weather places where indoor areas are heated, it can reduce heat lost from the indoors to the surroundings by radiation. In addition, the roof is also steel structured with skylights in some parts of the building.

RE: FORM

[ Winter 2015 ] Moving Exhibition Installation for Miniature Art Plaza Mayor | Madrid, Spain

18

The project is a moving exhibition place for miniature arts. It promotes the idea that everything is able to be minimized, including energy The infrastructure acts as an accordionfolding paper that is able to be either stretched out, or folded together. Its structure is designed to allow for easy transportation and multiple. The accordion-folding strategy allows it to accommodate different site availabilities.

FORM YOUR FUNCTION

[ Summer 2016 ] Temporary Installation Cambridge | Ontario, Canada

24

Much like our interaction with objects in nature, adapting natural elements to serve as seats, tables and shade, +/- allows the user to experience that gesture of simple adaptability through a series of 2x2 plugs that can be pushed, pulled and tested for their desired needs.

Located in the Kashii district of Fukuoka city, Nexus World is a project that aims to break away from the uniform and impersonal convention of collective housing. The 5-hectare master plan included designs by Oscar Tusquets, Christian de Portzamparc, Osamu Ishiyama, Mark Mack, Steven Holl, and Rem Koolhaas. Arata Isozaki was involved with designing a tower which was to be the centre piece of the project. The site is generally less active and less chaotic than the typical Japanese city. Because of this reason, the master plan contains fairly low perimeter, European style blocks. Koolhaas wanted to bring to Japan a new type of housing that was neither a free- standing house nor a conventional apartment building. He challenged the notion of making the building contextually deeply significant to Japanese tradition, and he speculated upon the idea of the 90’s being an age in which a new trans-continental culture could be created.

NEXUS WORLD

[ Spring 2017 ] OMA Residential Project Fukuoka | Japan

28

His final product, completed in 1991, contains 24, 3-storey units packed together to form 2 blocks. Contrasting the compactness of the plan, there are courtyards that cut through the cores of each unit. The whole building is wrapped in black rock textured walls that, in elevation, were supposed to represent the base of Isozaki’s tall column like towers that weren’t realized in their original form. The heaviness of these walls blocks out views to the exterior, creating an even stronger feeling of privacy. From the outside the building looks very compact and dark, but the courtyard light wells cut through the units creating gradients of well-lit and aerated public and private spaces within. Koolhaas took influence from traditional Japanese culture in the creation of his Nexus World project. By lifting the heavy parts of the project above the ground, he seems to mimic the traditional elevated Japanese wooden structures. Another influence or inspiration might have been Ando’s courtyard houses, such as the Azuma House built in 1975. Both projects channel the Japanese concept of being able to create views that can be controlled and altered by ones-self. Some other similarities are the central courtyards, and the very private looking facades. The buildings seem to function without relation to the outside context, creating internal focus.

HOUTAN PARK

[ Summer 2016 ] Shanghai 2010 Expo PuDong | Shanghai, China

34

As one of the central green spaces of the Shanghai 2010 Expo, Houtan Park is designed not only as a revived ecological waterfront for the exhibition but the flexibility integrated into the design will transform it into open public waterfront space for Shanghai afterwards. The 14 hectare site is located on the southern boundary of the Expo between the east bank of the Huangpu River waterfront and Puming Road. A former steel manufacturer and boat repair facility remained on site when the design was initiated in early 2007; construction was recently completed in October 2009 and will be open to the public in May 2010. The objective of the park design was to: create a green Expo, accommodate for a large influx of visitors during the exposition from May to October, demonstrate green technologies, transform a unique space to make the Expo an unforgettable event, and transition into a permanent public waterfront park after the Expo.

35

Axonometric Overview 36

37

Suzhou style decorative painting was often regarded as a time consuming and expensive technique, as gold was used for some parts of the drawing. The colors were used to depict tier upon tier in order to manifest the palatial manner of the Royals. Just like how this type of drawing mainly served for the Royals, the Houtan Park is also a tool or propaganda used by the government through the opportunity of Shanghai 2010 Expo. In the drawing, the men at the bottom are still wearing face masks, the water pump is still pumping polluted water into the river, and the fishing men on the boat is holding a dead fish in his hand. Holding the same purpose of this drawing, the Houtan Park creates a faรงade or a beautiful illusion that covers up the real problem---- that the Huangpu River is still dirty, and barely anyone goes to the park after the Expo.
