Southbrook School Writers’ Zone Southbrook School writers have amazing imaginations. They have used their writing skills to weave exciting tales for us to enjoy.

Infinite Space Yawwwwwwn what another beautiful day in this beautiful world. Lets go check the mail but first I will brush my teeth, because I’m not gross… (one brush later), ok, now I will check the mail. WOW. It’s a JOB APPLICATION and ITS FROM NASA. It has always been my dream.

The next day…

(Voom, voom), okay, we are here at the NASA Company training building. The first thing to do is start the engine says a man at NASA. Okay what one is the start button for the engine? The one that says ‘start the engine’ says the guy at Nasa.

5..4..3..2.. “STOP!!” said the guy at NASA. Why? “First of all I’m not coming with you, second of all, you need to do more training.”

One training course later…

“Okay, we are all done, see you later… oh yeah, I have an explosive that can blow up a whole country, sergeant,” says the guy at NASA. “Okay, thank you. Goodbye Sir.” 5..4..3..2..1, BLAST OFF! Exactly 7 days later…

(BEEP, BEEP, BEEP) DANGER, DANGER! Says the space ship. “What’s going on? Mummy, I’m scared!”

“Hello User 568776675964” “Huh? Who’s there?”

“It’s me, your rocket ship” “Ohhh?”

“It looks like we are being attacked by aliens,” says rocket.

“ALIENS! I thought they only came out on April 14, on Gorilla Independence Day.” What? Now you’re just talking gibberish.

“But we still need to defeat them,” said Rocket ship.

“Ok, it’s game time,” I said.

“No it’s not,” said rocket ship.

“Be quiet, you’re just an object.” I said.

“And you’re a bad astronaut that’s fighting with an object, that’s how weird you are, rocket ship.” said the rocket.

“HEY, both of you, instead of roasting each other, keep your eyes on space. The aliens are breaking the rocket ship,” says the guy at NASA. “Okay rocket ship, engage missile mode!!”

BOOM, POW, BANG

87 booms later…

Kapow! That’s the last of them. “Good job, Sir!” said rocket.

“Thank you.”

“Umm, error, error, error!” said rocket ship.

“What’s wrong rocket ship?”

“DANGER, DANGER,” said rocket ship.

“What do you mean? OH MY GOD. IT’S THE GIANT BOSS ALIEN'' (I’m even scared publishing this rawwwwwr!!)

“Wait a minute…”

“What?” said rocket ship.

“I remember we have an explosive that can blow up a country, remember?”

Rocket ship said “oh yeah, definitely USE IT!” Okay, 3.. 2.. 1.. FIRE!!!

Mars

I‘m a Little Sunflower I was a big sunflower.

Mrs Croteau, Mrs Sollitt, Mrs Webster and Mr Raidaveta were trying to pull me out of the ground.

They could not, so they got some kids to help.

They pulled and pulled and pulled. They couldn’t pull me out of the ground.

They got the rest of the Ngahere kids. They pulled and pulled and pulled and pulled. They did not get me out. So they went and got the Aoraki kids as well. They pulled and pulled and pulled and pulled and pulled. They did not get me out.

It was time to get Mr Jenkins. Everyone pulled and pulled and pulled and pulled. Then Mr Jenkins had an idea. He said to get shovels.

The whole school dug and dug and dug and dug and dug and dug and dug and dug. Then they started pulling again. They tugged and pulled and tugged and pulled and tugged and pulled and tugged and pulled.

R rrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr iiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiii ppp !!!

WHOOSH !

It was 5.59. I breathed deep, heavy breaths. I grabbed a Mars Bar from my pocket. I felt weird eating it because I was going to be the first person on Mars, and here I was floating in a spaceship, heading to Mars EATING a Mars Bar. I pushed that thought aside and looked out the window, then… BOOOOOF. I was here.

“Earth to Mars, Earth to Mars, can you hear me?” said the voice radio on my helmet.

“I read you loud and clear,” I said then unlocked the hatch. A huge gust of hot air blasted at me as I opened it.

“Earth to Mars, plant the flag, plant the flag, I repeat, plant the flag.” I grabbed my flag and stuck it into the read and orange ground.

“Earth to Mars, get back into the spaceship, you are running out of O2.”

“Okay, okay,” I said. I took a mental picture of Mars in my mind and got back into my spaceship and munched on a Mars Bar as I whizzed back to Earth.

Wow, it’s beautiful, but at the same time excruciatingly hot, but I’m gonna put my flag on and get out of here before I lose my oxygen, cause practising the moonwalk and the actual moonwalk are both really difficult.

Ok, well, I didn’t think gravity here was this bad, but I stand corrected and I hope this suit is waterproof because I’m sweating pretty hard.

The Bridle Path Written by Oliver Read

The night before was full of preparation. We packed big, filling lunches and full drink bottles. In the morning we packed our bags and we were on our way.

I was in a car with Mrs Brophy who taught us an annoying song that goes like this…

We wanna we wanna we wanna wee… everyone was singing it except me!

It was the morning we had anticipated, I mean sure the weather wasn’t amazing but the excitement was still the same, no matter where you were. When we arrived I took some funny pictures of everybody and got a couple goofy ones with Coen, Julia, Rose and Nikki being silly.

The mood was one of excitement and people ready to race.

We all felt the burn as we hit the steep climb up the hill, our shoes slipping on the gravel. We made our way up until we got to a lookout which would have looked beautiful on a nice day but sadly it was a misty moisty morning.

We continued on our way, slipping and jumping over rocks until we reached the summit and got to a big curved building. As we went inside, welcomed by the warmth of the heaters, we were directed

down a flight of stairs where a kind woman explained about the Time Tunnel Ride we were just about to enter.

In the Time Tunnel Ride you had to sit in a chair and move through to a dark room with multiple screens projected onto the wall.

Then we went into another room which had a scary boat creaking up and down and then we went into another room which had a mannequin drinking beer.

It was a pleasing experience but left me thinking it was a bit dated because there are new amazing New Zealanders that weren’t born over 20 years ago and also the Time Tunnel is meant to be about the things that New Zealanders have accomplished, however some of us noticed it didn’t really show any of the great things that Māori citizens of New Zealand have done.

I have since found that there was a Stuff article written about the neglect of maori culture in the Time Tunnel and that this is something they are working on improving.

It was good but in my opinion it could have been better.

After our experience at the Time Tunnel we went on our way again, down the hill. Luckily it cleared up a bit and I got a respectable picture of the Lyttelton harbour.

There were some pretty cool shelters along the way. Although graffitied, they must have withstood a lot of time.

As the day came to an end we ate afternoon tea in the Lyttelton square and headed back to school.

The bridle path was named after the trail as it was so steep that in places the first european settlers who rode their horses had to lead them by the bridle.

There are a number of sentry boxes along the path to lyttelton that were made in WWII as strong points which means they have withstood 82 years.

The Lyttelton Harbour is very pretty and I loved walking down seeing the beautiful blue water Overall it was a pretty great day but I liked being a couch potato again that afternoon.

Whānau Fun Evening 2021 Written by Cameron Tobin and Ollie Read

The sun was shining in our eyes, the air was hot. Families were gathered around the school. It was the 2021 Whānau Fun Evening.

We were all really excited about the fact that the whanau fun evening was so close!

When the time finally arrived we noticed a warm summery happy vibe that just instantly hit the heart.

The thing that made the evening stand out was the kids market.

On the night a lot of stalls were up, lots of children were selling different things. There were so many lollies and things like homemade robots. It was great!

As a stallholder myself I was selling lots of different things which

included loom band, charms and bracelets. I found there weren’t many people wanting to buy non-food things so not a lot of money went around, but people still got into it and I thought that even though I didn’t get as much money as I had hoped I still had fun.

Ollie said that his favourite stall was Amiri’s, because the biscuits were not too hard and a little bit chewy they were the best he had tasted.

Sadly the performing arts performance was cancelled due to the teacher being sick.

We were all a bit sad about it. But even though that happened we still had loads of fun.

There were quite a lot of children on the bikes.There were a lot of different bikes to choose from.

It looked like people loved the hangi! There was Kumara and so many delicious foods on the plate!

When they ate it they had lovely smiles on their faces!

Some of the bikes had pedals that were in the exact same spots as the other one! It was so tricky! But most people got it right! And the chairs! People sat side by side and there was a driver, who pushed and pulled a lever in the middle to go left and right, both the people had to pedal as well, but sometimes the chain came off and you had to get a manager to put the chain back on.

Even some former students came back to join in the fun. (It was nice to see them again!)

Many kids enjoyed swimming in the pool on the nice warm evening.We saw so many people doing bombs, dives and a couple doing belly flops that looked like it hurt!

El Gregoe

El Gregoe pulled them out every time he had one in his mouth, it was scary but funny.

Most people knew about El Gregoe, but he hadn’t been at Southbrook school for several years.

I think we were all expecting times throughout the whole show, something a little different - just a which represented us pouring run-of-the-mill magic show kindness out to others. perhaps, but he taught us things like respect, kindness and Some children were chosen to help responsibility. out on stage with the magic acts and they got magic wand slap El Gregoe introduced us to WITS: bands for helping out. El Gregoe Walk away, Ignore, Tell someone, showed us a bee puppet that kept Stand up (for yourself and others) producing balls from its mouth.

My favourite part of the show was the way El Gregoe’s parrots and other birds just appeared, especially the part where the white bird came out of the painting and amazingly the bird painting on the picture disappeared completely.

2021 Top Team Written by Cameron Tobin

Some other activities we did were: assembling a picture, carrying a sponge along a line to squeeze in a bucket (the aim was to get the most water in the bucket), walking in skis with the rest of your group (the skis had multiple foot holds), there was an activity where you had to connect pipes to make a tennis ball travel to a bucket and many many more.

Although most of us got pretty wet it was a fun day!

Top team was such a fun day for everyone. The year seven and eights all had great buddies to team up with. They were great leaders to help the little ones out.

We had a little talk while we sat in lines with our groups. They discussed that at the end of the activity (when the timer went out) we would rotate to the next activity. We were excited because everything looked like lots of fun.

We did some very fun and challenging activities, some were

very wet activities to do, like the tube with tons of holes where most of the team had to block the holes in it, while one or two people carried water in cups from a bucket (full of water) to the tube full of holes. The people holding them either got wet because the person pouring the water in the tube poured water on them or it was because the holes sprayed water on them because they did not hold the holes properly.

A Visit from the Butterfly Lady Written by Ollie Read

Ngā Manu Nui and Teo Teo had Educational Guide on Monarch some swan plants so the teachers Butterflies.” decided to get an expert in to teach them and the children about how to care for swan plants and some very quickly growing caterpillars.

They invited Maria Romero from the Butterfly Musketeers to come and talk to them about swan plants and their beloved caterpillars.

Maria Romero began a business named the butterfly musketeers where she goes around New Zealand teaching kiwi kids about butterflies and their importance in our world. She has also written a book which is called “An

She came bearing gifts; swan plants, seed pods and lots of knowledge! Did you know that the reason swan pants are called swan plants is because the seed pods look like little fuzzy swans?

She also talked about the life cycle of monarch butterflies and that they are a super important pollinator that helps our fruit and veggies grow.

She had a very fun way of learning about the monarch butterflies life cycle from caterpillar to butterfly.

She got the children to act out being

caterpillars changing into butterflies. Then they could dress up with butterfly wings.

Maria shared some fairly gross facts about caterpillars, including the fact that wasps like to feed on them when they make the letter J just before going into a chrysalis.

As a result of everything the teachers and children learned they decided to make a butterfly and pollinator friendly garden at the entrance to the school which is started coming together after a working bee where Mrs Reid, Mrs Sollit, Mike Dyndul and Stephen McQuarry came together to create the new garden. The Enviro’group is also working on filling it up with soil ASAP so that it is ready for spring time. We can’t wait to see the beautiful flowers and new insects which will allow the teachers to teach a cool science topic to their students.

Teoteo - Our Metamorphosis Journal

We got some new swan plants from the Butterfly Musketeer.

Butterflies lay their eggs on the underside of the leaves to keep them safe. In about fourteen days, the eggs hatch.

Swan plants have enough food for two caterpillars.

The caterpillars grow with all the leaves they munch.

We found out we are not meant to feed them pumpkin.

This caterpillar is getting ready to form a chrysalis.

We thought we had lost a caterpillar but then Mrs Bond found it on this game. It travelled a long way to make its chrysalis.

It will be about 10-14 days at the chrysalis stage. It will start getting dark before the butterfly comes out. We could see the colours of the wings of the butterfly through the chrysalis

We took the game with the chrysalis outside because we thought it might be ready for the butterfly to hatch. We got to see the butterfly pump its wings with blood.

Racism

Written by Rose Walker and Nikki Hare What comes to mind when you hear the word ‘racism’? For me this word is quite personal to both myself and my friends because it is a very serious topic and I believe that people don’t always realise how hurtful racism is.

Often people can be careless with what they say and don’t realise that either they or those around them are being racist.

In the past few months racism has become a major talking point yet again because of the Black Lives Matter movement and Covid-related racism towards asian people, there is a big movement going on right now and it is very relevant at a time when people are even going to the extent of hurting and burning asian people because of their race.

So, what exactly is racism and how do we recognise it? The Human Rights Commission explains it as: -Offensive remarks or jokes about your race, colour, ethnicity or nationality

-Mimicry of the way you speak, e.g. if you have an accent / how you pronounce words -Being called racist names -Being shown racially offensive material -Deliberately mispronouncing your name For me racism is a hurtful thing that people do to criticize, harass and even hurt physically and verbally people of different colours, races and ethnicities.

We asked some students who have experienced racism about how it made them feel: “It can really hurt someone because you can’t just change your culture.

Last year people commented on the food I was having.”

“For me, it gets on my nerves when people do it to other cultures. I like to talk to my dad about it because he understands.

I would be comfortable talking about my culture, but I don’t really know

much about it, which can make me feel embarrassed.”

“People need to think about what they are saying, and if someone asks them to stop, they need to listen.”

We interviewed some teachers to hear their thoughts on racism: Miss paterson “I think racism is very unnecessary, as we are all people and we are all the same and everyone has different ideas, beliefs and values. However that's not because of the colour of our skin or where we're from. I have not necessarily witnessed racism in front of me. I've definitely heard about it and witnessed it on TV. If I was witnessing a racist attack I would go over and defuse the situation to begin with, get the person that's being attacked or is the victim to just ignore it for the moment and get the other person to calm down, sit down

and ask them what they've done and why they did it.”

Mrs Marsh...

What is your perspective on racism?

Mrs Marsh: I think it is really hard living in a society where people feel that they are being treated differently.

And for me that is a big part of what racism is, where people aren’t being treated equally and are being judged on appearances or their gender. It must be really hard when you are on the back foot all the time because people aren’t treating you fairly.

What do you think people should do to prevent racism?

I think regardless of your appearance, where you come from or your background I think everyone needs to be given a chance to be who they are and not be judged by someone else’s criteria. I think it’s really important that people feel like they are valued for whatever it is that they have to bring and that people have the same opportunities regardless of what race or gender we are. You only get one life, so you have to be able to live it.

People shouldn’t be silenced just because of their culture, skin colour and ethnicity. Racism is absolutely NOT a joke and it shouldn't be treated like one.

Here is our Year 7 & 8 perspective on racism…

Nikki Why do I think racism is bad? It can really hurt people and their feelings and it really is unnecessary as you can't just up and change your culture or colour even if you wanted to. I think it's bad that people mock others for how they look, what colour they are and what culture they are because like I said before you can't just change your culture whenever you want to just for society to accept you.

It hurts to think of how people have killed Asians in the past and didn't get proper sentencing just because they're white but if they killed a white person it wouldn't be the same story.

I think racism is horrible because it just makes people so insecure, and it can even make people doubt their worth.

People shouldn’t have to change and hide their culture, colour

#StopAsianHate Stop asian hate is a big thing right now. Many people have been attacked and some have even died. So many things have happened since covid, I think it's absolutely disgusting that some people think just because someone is asian they have the virus.

They do things like move away, say racist things about covid and verbally, or physically hurt people just because they look a certain way. It's so scary to think you may be attacked or even killed just because of your race.

Imagine waking up and being worried for your own life just because of your race, because people think you have or are responsible for a virus. A Lot of these attacks are being aimed at elderly asian people. It's scary to live in this kind of society. We are all human.

own opinions, but when it comes to racism if your opinion is rude or wrong then don’t say it. This should not be a thing in this day and age.

Racism is not a joke and it is still bad in 2021, think about that number for a second. 1955 is when Rosa Parks* refused to give up her seat, 1955!

I really like the quote “our lives end the day we are silent about things”

*Rosa Parks was an american activist in the civil rights movement she is most famous for not giving up her seat she was one of the first native americans to make stand against racism in the act of not giving up her seat when a white person asked for it she got put in jail for two months for not giving up her seat that is crazy right?

Rose Some people say they didn’t know what they said was wrong as an excuse when they shouldn't have said it in the first place. Others call people weird for the food they eat and the language they speak. Just because someone speaks differently doesn't give others the right to disrespect and mock their language or accent. We all are human. Just because someone might be a different colour, race or religion it doesn't mean our lives matter less. I have experienced racism before, and it’s horrible. Having someone put you down verbally just because of your race HURTS LIKE HECK!!!

Ollie I have friends of different cultures and it really makes me aggravated seeing people be racist toward them. I think racism is a really bad thing that affects everybody. People are entitled to their

Valentine’s Day

Written by Rose Walker Ollie Read and Nikki Hare a homemade card is enough to make someone feel loved and that is one of the keys to happiness. So this Valentines, or the next, or for the next ten years to come perhaps, instead of rushing off to the store to get your significant other a gift maybe you could make them their favorite meal or say you love them because it only takes that to make somebody feel special.

Valentine’s, what does it mean really?

Rose says: it means a day of love, a day where you can celebrate LOVE! You can celebrate it with a loved one or celebrate it by yourself because why not, it's a day of love. A day where you can remember that everyone is loved, a day to remember you can love yourself too.Treat yourself nicely on valentines because remember you matter!!

Nikki says: Valentine's day is a day to celebrate love, it's not necessarily about romance but just love in general. It's a day to celebrate love, whether it is self-love or appreciating your significant other. It is even a day to spend time with your loved ones or family.

Valentine's day is also a day to appreciate all your different quirks and everything about yourself, It is a day to appreciate your birth and why you are here on earth, because you have a purpose.

Some things you can do to appreciate yourself on Valentine's Day is to buy yourself chocolates or to go out for food, to treat yourself in some way like having a long bath with bath salts or even eat your favourite dish.
