It can be difficult to assign one monthly dollar amount to be an expense, if you don’t spend the same amount every month. It is recommended that an average dollar amount be used.

Creating a budget cont’d 

Get 3 months pay stub and average them to determine the average monthly income.

Get 3 months of bills, add them and divide by 3 to calculate your monthly fixed expenses such as mortgage/rent, utilities, car payments and insurance (fixed expenses).

Average 3 months of other expenses such as groceries, clothing, credit card expenses, medical bills etc.

Creating a budget cont’d 

Add this amount to the fixed expenses to determine total expenses for the month.

Evaluate your expenses; look for opportunities to economize and develop a plan for action to cut back spending in specific areas.

Develop a monthly budget and stick to it.

Set up a savings plan such as passbook a/c, certificate of deposit or individual retirement account and begin making regular deposits.
