Orientation Presentation

IFMSA • For more than 60 years, IFMSA has existed and been led by medical students worldwide. The International Federation of Medical Students’ Associations (IFMSA) was founded in 1951. It is the world’s oldest and largest independent organization representing associations of medical students internationally. IFMSA is recognized as a non-governmental organization within the United Nations’ system and the World Health Organization and as well, it works with the World Medical Association.

PAMSA • The Pan-American Medical Students Association, PAMSA is one of the largest and most diverse sub divisions of the IFMSA. We the members of the Jamaican Medical Students’ Association, JAMSA are proud to be a part of this family for the past 10 years. • PAMSA has long been a cultural melting pot that brings together some of the world’s most driven medical students in our united quest in advocacy and other humanitarian efforts. Whether it is at our annual Regional Meeting of the Americas or at the biannual IFMSA GA’s, the relationships we forged have often times outlasted our days with the IFMSA. It is this spirit that drives the ‘PAMSA-bred’ influencers within the Americas and the rest of the world.

JAMSA • The Jamaica Medical Students’ Association, JAMSA, is a notfor-profit student organization comprised of all the students at the UWI Mona campus registered in the Bachelors of Medicine and Bachelors of Surgery (M.B., B.S.) programme. • The role of the elected “Council” of JAMSA is to represent the views of students as well as to coordinate and facilitate the Association’s various activities and initiatives both locally and internationally.

AIMS AND OBJECTIVES  To represent the best interest of medical students at all levels  To facilitate the learning process by acting as a bridge between the faculty and the students  To give constructive input to improve the standard of education  To organize projects aimed at delivering medical education  To increase students’ knowledge of medical education to ensure maximal efficiency of the standing committee and empower the students

REASONS TO JOIN SCOME 1) Nothing is perfect. Medical education is not nothing. Thus it is not perfect. :) 2) If something is not perfect it can definitely be improved. 3) Students are the first quality check of medical education so the first who see what's wrong or missing. 4) We all complain. We might as well complain where our opinions could actually change something and not in the back of the class.

• 6) It's absolutely impossible that there is nothing you could learn from other medical students. • 7) If something is wrong it can be fixed, if something is missing it can be added. If you expect others to do it, they might expect you to, and you'll all keep on waiting. You will never receive an answer, if you don't ask, or get to a solution, if you don't try. • 8) It is certain that working together with others one can achieve more than alone. • 9) Smart people learn from other people's experiences. • 10) Ideas are the only things you can give to other people and still have.

UPCOMING MAJOR EVENTS • SCOME CDs • Career Day • USMLE Workshop
