Welcome to issue 33 of Shine magazine and the year 2013. February March is a great time of year to live in this area. We are over the scorching heat of mid summer and the crowds are thinning out. Relax and enjoy a swim before or after work, summer fruits and alfresco dining. Our little Shine magazine has really hit the ground running in 2013 after producing record issues in 2012. As usual, it’s all about the people. We have a great team here at Shine magazine and I look forward to working with them to celebrate all that is great about living in the Cronulla Caringbah area in the pages of Shine. All the best for 2013.

We would love to hear your feedback on Shine Magazine and welcome any suggestions for content you would like to see in future issues.

Write to us at: editor@shinemagazine.com.au or Shine Magazine, PO Box 197 Cronulla 2230. (Please include your postal address and contact details). IMPORTANT: This magazine is intended as a reference only, not as medical advice. The information provided is from professional practitioners, however be sure to consult your doctor before beginning any therapeutic program. 20,000 copies of Shine Magazine are printed bimonthly and distributed via our contributors, letterbox drops, advertisers and places where women retreat in the Sutherland Shire.

HAPPY WIFE, HAPPY LIFE

Happy Wife, Happy Life By Deena Thompson

The Secret to being a fulfilled and content woman in relationships and life. A book called “The Game of Life for Women” talks about a game plan for women called The Square of Life. The four pillars of this square are HEALTH, WEALTH, LOVE and PERFECT SELF EXPRESSION. 8

HEALTH is defined as a consistent state of well being and involves mental, emotional, spiritual and physical. The effort and discipline to maintain this wellness plan is often in a woman’s thinking. Life can feel complicated and overwhelming for a woman so strategies are vital for a sense of accomplishment around what is meaningful. Why is this? Understanding how a woman and also how

SHINEMAGAZINE2013

When a woman feels loved and can return love, her world is saturated with contentment.

men’s brains are wired will help us appreciate why. Because the brain, the chief emotional organ of life, is constructed differently in men and women, it processes information in a different way. This results in different perceptions, priorities and behavior. Women see, hear, and feel more. What they see, hear and feel means more to them. Women, have greater peripheral abilities, more overall awareness of a situation and an ability to pick up small facial cues as well as senses that men don’t. Women cry more often than men because they have more to cry about – they are receiving more emotional input, reacting more to it, and expressing it with greater force.

Women’s brains, are wired so that they favour communicating, social bonding and connectedness. This is when they are most content. If this is stifled women will crave emotional intimacy in their daily lives and often target their partners to fulfill these needs. It sometimes drives a wedge between the people they most love. For an aware woman it is natural to balance the satisfaction of these needs amongst all her relationships. With her partner, family, friends, nature and HERSELF. Who she chooses to engage with to provide these emotions will be vitally important. WEALTH to a woman is best described as the feeling of abundance in her life. Not all of this is monetary. It can just be a sense of confidence that where there is demand supply will follow. Wealth for a woman is the availability of people and opportunity to support her goals. LOVE - What women value most in their lives are personal relationships and security. When a woman feels loved and can return love, her world is saturated with contentment. PERFECT SELF EXPRESSION is the outlet for a woman’s strengths, talents and beliefs. The words she speaks and the actions she takes. She needs to be clear on what her strengths are and imagine how this will be. The secret to keeping a woman happy is largely about a realistic attitude and approach. A woman thrives on being able to talk and have her feelings heard. Once heard, she is happy to engage further in activities or conversation as this gives her opportunity to bond, and express her ideas and affections. DEENA THOMPSON Counsellor. someone in the shire Margarette Looney A WORLD OF ART GROWING UP IN A MELBOURNE FAMILY OF ARTISTS AND PHOTOGRAPHERS, Margarette Looney followed in their artistic footsteps. Her expansive choice of subject material and expertise across various mediums has earned her an enviable reputation as a talented artist. Eventually settling in the Sutherland Shire she was inspired by the surrounding ocean and bays. Margarette Looney is someone in the shire who has captured the beauty that surrounds us. “At the age of 30 I decided to do the 4 Year Art Certificate at TAFE. My first husband had passed away and it seemed to be the right time to do some formal training in art. With the great tutors we had at TAFE I knew I was on the right path to follow my passion and

“I would recommend any budding artist take any opportunity that may come their way" make a career in the art world” said Margarette. After graduating Margarette worked at a local art supply shop in Miranda and eventually went into teaching. Margarette also began painting seriously and exhibiting throughout NSW & interstate. “Sales were great. I started to become (Continued on pg16)

someone in the shire Margarette Looney (Continued from pg14) recognized and even won some prizes for my art. Confidence that I had made the right decision to follow this career path grew. The knowledge gained in the art store enabled me to pass onto students many different techniques using a wide variety of art materials,” said Margarette. Opening her own gallery in Como on the Georges River became another inspiration. It was a hub of artistic activity with seven other teachers sharing the space along with fund raising auctions, exhibitions and social activities with family and friends. During these years Margarette completed many works in pastel and water colour. I also became interested in architecture and went onto paint many commissions of some magnificent Sydney mansions,” comments Margarette. Many of her images have been put into print and reproduced for wine bottle labels, handbags, cushions, cards and calendars. Margarette eventually sold the art studio at Como. She began classes at Sylvania Heights Community and Youth Club for beginners and advanced students in all

mediums. “I would have to say that my years’ working in many aspects of the art world such as teaching, retail art supplies, gallery management and a framing shop was an invaluable experience. I would recommend any budding artist take any opportunity that may come their way to work in these associated fields. It gives you the financial support to keep painting during the lean times and can open many doors.” said Margarette. In 2011 Margarette was “Artist in Residence” in the Greek Islands, tutoring and painting in the beautiful Dodecanese group. “I look forward to discovering many more subjects that will give me inspiration to paint and to bring that inspiration into my classes for a long time to come.” Margarette Looney is “Artist of the Month” at Cronulla Art Gallery during May featuring her well known “Venetian Mask” paintings. by Melisa George

Happiness

is a good nights sleep

IF YOU OR YOUR PARTNER FAIL TO SLEEP WELL REGULARLY, FOR WHATEVER REASON, IT IS HIGHLY UNLIKELY YOU CAN SUSTAIN GOOD HEALTH. Interrupted or impaired sleep can cause a ripple-effect of problems in your body such as: 1. Metabolic - a pre-diabetic state causing you to feel hungry even if you've already eaten. 2. Immune - a weakening of the immune response leading to an increased risk of infections. 3. Tumour growth - tumours grow 2-3 times faster in lab animals with severe sleep dysfunction. 4. Mood and Cognition - inability to think clearly or make decisions, reduced problem solving ability, depression. Preparation is everything. * Be in bed by 10pm * Don't drink any fluids within 2 hours of bedtime and go to the bathroom right before bed * Take a hot shower or bath (with Epsom Salts) before bed

* Wear an eye mask to block out all light * Put your work away at least 1 hour before bed * No electrical devices in the bedroom (TV, mobile, laptop) * Avoid caffeine and alcohol * Exercise regularly but not late at night * Have your adrenal function and hormone balance checked by a Naturopath A happy man, woman, child ... is someone who is getting good sleep. If insomnia or sleep deprivation is happening to you, the Naturopaths at Health in our Hands can help. RED FROGS AUSTRALIA

Safeguarding a generation of young people. by Melisa George Summer holidays, Christmas and the end of year celebrations are behind us. With new goals and challenges on the horizon why not plan to make a difference. Support a program which supports and safeguards a generation of young people from the ages of 15 – 25 called Red Frogs. RED FROGS RECOGNIZE THAT THE CULTURE of young people is dominated by alcohol and that excessive consumption of alcohol and other substances can lead to dangerous behaviours. At the end of each year we hear of parents fears for their children attending Schoolies. They celebrate leaving school and starting a new chapter in their lives. Unfortunately for some these celebrations end in tragedy. At home we sit back horrified and saddened watching the stories run across our nightly news.

RED FROGS MAKE IT THEIR MISSION to provide a positive peer presence in alcohol-fuelled environments where young people gather. They educate young people on safe partying behaviours. Over 1500 Red Frog volunteers support school-leavers through their week-long celebrations at Schoolies Week. They provide a positive presence within the party culture giving out tens of thousands of red frogs. THE RED FROGS PROGRAM IS RENOWNED for the support it provides not only to school leavers, but also to uni students, party and festival goers, event managers, sporting groups, and musicians. For parental advice or to support click on http:// au.redfrogs.com or call Red Frog Hotline on 1300 557 123.

valentine's day 2013

Thursday

February 14 Don’t forget boys! Many people celebrate Valentine’s Day by giving flowers, chocolates, jewellery or other presents to their loved ones. The event falls on February 14 each year. For many, Valentine's Day is a time to share a special moment with their loved ones. Activities that people do to show their love and appreciation for each other on Valentine’s Day include: Picnics in the park. Buying gifts of chocolates, flowers, jewellery, or other items for their loved ones. A romantic meal at a restaurant. A boat cruise with a special meal. Some people choose Valentine’s Day as the day to propose to their partners, while others set February 14 as their wedding day. Some charities, non-government organisations, or community organisations hold special

28

events, such as a Valentine’s Day ball, to raise funds for various causes that help others in need. Valentine’s Day is an observance but it is not a designated public holiday. Restaurants, theatres, coffee shops, and shops selling Valentine’s Day related products may be particularly busy on this day. Those wishing to eat out on Valentine’s Day may need to book with their restaurant of choice in advance. The origins of Valentine's Day are not clear but many sources believe that it stems from the story of St Valentine, a Roman priest who was martyred on or around February 14 in the year 270 CE. Don’t forget her on Valentine’s Day boys or it will be you who is martyred!

beauty review

Look after

YOUR SKIN by Cherry Ripe The Australian sun is famously harsh on our skin. Looking at the complexion of the former beach beauties that Cherry went to Cronulla High school with confirms this fact. They are prematurely aged by skin damage. Girls – please look after your skin. You can’t replace it. Wear sunscreen and continue to nourish your skin with moisturiser and a regular face mask.. COST A FORTUNE YOU SAY? Here are a few tips direct from your little beauty tipster Cherry! Why pay when you can use basic ingredients found around the house to make your own simple, hydrating masks and scrubs? Before applying a face mask: 1. PULL back hair and tie it up out of the way. 2. CLEAN you face before applying the mask 3. APPLY with fingertips over forehead, cheeks, nose, chin and neck.

4. NEVER apply the mask close to the eye area. It’s really sensitive. 5. RELAX when you put your mask on. Try not to talk and lie down. There are different recipes for different skin types. The best facial mask is honey. It helps open pores and cleanses them. Rinse off with lukewarm water. Then rinse with cold water to close the pores after cleansing. Facial masks are a must to open the pores of the skin and remove the dirt and grit inside. Glowing skin is a big asset to a woman’s beauty. If her skin is glowing it gives an elegant, beautiful look to women of any age.

Lucky Living in Cronulla HAVE YOU EVER NOTICED HOW SOME PEOPLE TEND TO ATTRIBUTE THINGS TO LUCK WHEN CLEARLY LUCK HAD NOTHING TO DO WITH IT? HERE ARE SOME OF MY FAVOURITES: Gee you were lucky to do well in that race. (oh you mean the one I've been training for every week for the past year). Gee you are lucky to live in a nice place. (luck don't pay the mortgage or rent each month). Gee you were lucky to do well when you sold that place. (as above but for the last decade or more). Gee you are lucky to live in Cronulla. (see item two) Gee you are lucky to live close to work. (I am self employed which again is certainly not luck). If I bother to continue the conversation with these people I generally point out that we all have the ability to run our own lives. It is a free country. You just need the guts to think for yourself. Deciding where we live is fundamental to our life. Like many other natives of Cronulla, I find myself using the car less. Walk to the

beach, walk to work, walk to the shops, walk out to dinner. Why do we do this? Because we can. Ladies and gentlemen it is not luck which allows us to do these things - it is a conscious decision to live a better quality of life. I'm still living in Cronulla. Some people have all the luck.

Road

Welcome to our regular section where Shine focuses on “My Street”. It is a local street that you may already live in or may like to live in. We do the research for you. The pros, the cons and how much it would cost to live there. Occupying a slender peninsula with the waters of Yowie Bay to the east and Gymea Bay to the west,Yowie Bay is almost entirely surrounded by water. Some say that the origin of the suburb’s name is derived from an aboriginal word meaning ‘place of echoes’. No historians suggest that any yowies have ever lived there! Government Surveyor Robert Dixon gave Yowie Bay its name in 1827. The suburb enjoys a slow pace of development and contemporary Yowie Bay is a beautiful residential suburb. Most homes in Yowie Bay offer spectacular views, and many boast waterfrontages suitable for boat-moorings. Running off Kiora Road Miranda, Attunga Road is the main artery running through Yowie Bay. The higher numbers will be bounded by water on three sides. Attunga Road contains over 300 houses ranging in price from under $1,000,000 to over $2.5 million. A regular bus service runs along Attunga Road linking it with the train station at Miranda. Yowie Bay still offers more modest, older style cottages suitable for renovation or rebuilding. In fact, there are still a few level building blocks available here. A retirement village – Waterbrook – also offers an option for the over-55s. If 2012 is anything to go by, we are looking forward to an exciting and buoyant 2013 in the local real estate sector. After a steady start to the Spring market, it was not until October when the market started to really kick with an influx of properties launched onto the market. After the traditionally slower winter period, October saw a large number of hungry buyers flock to open homes eager to inspect what the market had to offer. This type of activity flowed on into November and December and resulted in a number of rapid transactions concluded prior to Christmas. December was an impressive month of activity for our vendors with a total of 35 properties sold by our office. Although inspection numbers decreased in the final two weeks leading up to Christmas, there was still a handful of genuine buyers floating around putting forward strong offers with exchanges taking place as late as Christmas Eve. It is fair to say that we really had a three-speed market in the local market in 2012 which I feel will continue throughout 2013. Sub $1Million Spurred on by low interest rates, the sub $1m price bracket was firing on all cylinders throughout 2012 as buyers aggressively pursued and snapped up quality properties. $1 Million - $2 Million As we move into the mid-tier market ($1m-$2m) a second speed kicks into gear which is less frantic yet buyers remain in healthy

Shine #33.indd 37

numbers and responsive to well-positioned and priced properties. $ 2 Million + The third speed remains the sputtering engine room of the premium ($2m+) sector where buyers continue to tread carefully. Premium buyers are uncompromisingly focused on finding the perfect property to entice them to make a move, with the only alternative being incredible value.

www.localimages.com.au

Happy New Year!

Towards the end of 2012, there were two transactions recorded above $6m which were both negotiated privately by the owners. I believe this gives confidence to any prospective purchasers looking to buy in this price category. Whilst the auction clearance rate across Sydney hovered around 63% over the final quarter of 2012, our office maintained an average clearance rate close to 85%. With uncertainty shrouding investment returns in the local and international stock markets and a further reduction in the RBA cash rate to a level not seen since 2009, property is continuing to be an attractive investment option. Throughout December we continued to lease properties at a steady pace. 25 new managements were leased within 4 days of being offered to the market. This maintained our low vacancy rate of 1.8%. All in all 2012 ended on a good note. The world didn't come to a screaming end as the Mayan's predicted! I look forward to seeing you at our open homes in 2013. Thank you for your continued support throughout 2012.

Try making these healthy homemade muesli bars instead - your kids won't taste the difference. Serving Size: Makes 24 Special Info: Egg free, Nut free Ingredients: ½ cup (125mL) honey ¼ cup caster sugar 125g butter 3 cups rolled oats 1 cup Rice Bubbles 1 cup sultanas ½ cup chopped apricots, dates or choc chips ½ cup desiccated coconut ¼ cup pepitas, sunflower or sesame seeds Method: Preheat oven to 180°C. Grease and line a slice tray (mine is 31 cm x 22cm) with baking paper.

44

Combine honey, sugar and butter in a saucepan over medium heat. Cook, stirring, for 2-3 minutes until butter melts and sugar dissolves. Bring to the boil and cook for 2 minutes or until syrup thickens slightly. Remove from heat. Combine remaining ingredients in a large bowl. Pour over the hot syrup and stir to combine. Spoon into prepared pan and press firmly to make sure the mixture will stick together. Wet your fingers with a bit of cold water and press the top to get a smooth finish. Bake in oven for 15-20 minutes or until golden. Cool and then refrigerate until well chilled and cut into 24 slices (about 2cm x 6cm).

Bring your toddler to Cronulla on Tuesdays for a whole lot of free fun! Cronulla has always been a favourite spot for children and their carers, with plenty of open space and a relaxed atmosphere. It is a place to make new friends or meet up with old ones while enjoying the outdoor shopping and seaside lifestyle. Toddler Tuesdays, a new initiative of Cronulla Beach CBD, aims to bring together a community of young Mums, Dads and Carers. Each week the large Pavilion Stage area of Cronulla Mall will be transformed for Toddler Tuesday. Children will have plenty of play equipment to enjoy with new pieces added each week. The fenced play area gives toddlers plenty of room to explore whilst still enclosed in one safe spot. While supervising their toddlers, parents and carers can relax in the adjoining seating area and enjoy time to chat. Toddler Tuesdays are suitable for children aged up to 6 years. The facilities are fully undercover and operate from 9.30am to 1.00pm. The first Toddler Tuesday will

be on 5 February 2013 followed by every Tuesday during school terms until mid November. Sessions are on a drop in basis so no bookings are required and they are FREE! Toddler Tuesdays are a great opportunity for new parents and carers looking for a relaxed, safe play area with great facilities. It’s perfect for mother’s groups, playgroups, grandparents and anyone new to the area. For dates visit www.cronullabeachcbd.com.au or keep up to date with us on facebook www.facebook. com/cronullabeachcbdevents.

dining Chocpad the new Cronulla

'Love Shack'

Some people think eating chocolate is a vice, a naughty thing to get away with while no one's looking. Poor misguided fools! High in antioxidants, the right sort of chocolate can be very good for you. The folks at Chocpad in Cronulla are specialists in the stuff. Grab your chocoholic Valentine and indulge in some serious goodness. Long upholstered benches line the wall with scatter cushions for extra snuggle. Dark chocolate coloured tables and chairs are designed for comfort. Add subdued lighting and old school R&B echoing throughout what is more like a cocktail lounge and you are sure to be in the mood for a little indulgence. Chocpad was created by two guys with a sweet tooth seeking a fresh style of delivering coffee in Cronulla. The focus is on providing comfort and indulgence through an experience that zeros in on the taste buds. Their idea seems to be working. I walked past Chocpad late one night recently and the place was

going off! It’s a place where couples can go and be together to relax and have a good time. The chilled out music and decor mixed with silky Belgian chocolate is guaranteed to offer a refuge for indulgence! A six tiered dual chocolate fountain sits majestically at the front of this refuge. An elixir of pure milk and white chocolate flows from cup to cup. Come and drink from this fountain of youth. Chocolate keeps you young!

Cronulla has one of the longest beaches in Sydney and a sparkling outdoor cafe scene. To us locals Cronulla has a number of beaches not just one. Cronulla Beach itself is the major family beach and great for swimming in the surf and walks along the Esplanade. A visit to the beach is that much better when you retire to a relaxed café to “rehydrate” afterwards. NEW TO THE CRONULLA CAFÉ SCENE IS BEACHES CAFÉ. It is right across the road from South Cronulla Beach and park. This cool, open sided café is perfect for walking into straight off the beach and relaxing in the shade. It has a cool, relaxed, beachside vibe and perfect for chilling out the front and watching the world walk by. Of course the only thing that is better than a great day at the beach is a great day at the beach, followed by a burger, some chips, and a beer. Grab two gourmet burgers with chips and two standard beers from Beaches Café for only $25. After a workout in the surf, bite into a delicious gourmet beef burger in this fantastic café. Beaches Café makes great honest food at fantastic prices. You and a friend can enjoy two of their delicious beef burgers with chips. You'll also get a couple of icy cold beers to wash the meal down. It doesn't get any better than that on a hot summers day. 59 Gerrale Street Opposite Cronulla Beach. PH: 9527 7729

get cooking Sizzling your Summer LAMB KOFTA WRAPS Try something different- a healthy BBQ recipe. Serves 6.

WHAT YOU'LL NEED 6 x Lamb Kofta skewers from your local butcher 6 x Wholemeal wraps Tzatziki dip or natural Greek yoghurt with grated cucumber Tabouli Salad from your local deli 2 x diced tomatoes. Desired salad to serve

WHAT TO DO

1 BBQ Lamb Kofta skewers until golden brown cooked through the centre 2 Spoon tzatziki dip, tabouli, and diced tomatoes on wraps 3 Place cooked lamb kofta on wraps, fold and pull out stick 4 Serve with fresh salad on the side You can also enjoy this wrap fresh or toasted using your sandwich press. Lamb Kofta skewers available at The Lean Butcher – Lean, Tender and Tasty!

BBQ Tips from the Lean Butcher 1. Don’t Prick your sausages – It's not necessarily fat that comes out, you are likely to lose flavour and juiciness 2. When marinating meat, massage on and remove excess. Too much marinade will stew your meat making it tough while burning the marinade. 3. Kebabs are an easy and fun way to BBQ different types of meat. You can put chicken, lamb, pork, beef and vegetables on a stick and kids love ‘em! 4. Like roasts, steaks should be slightly rested after cooking. The inside of the steak continues to cook after it has been taken off the BBQ. Cutting into the steak straight away will release a lot of juice and flavour onto your plate rather than staying in your steak! 5. You don’t have to go top shelf to have a great BBQ. There are many different styles and options to choose from whether it be steak, chops or chicken. Your local butcher can help make every BBQ sizzle this summer.

Summer FISHING

WITH THE WARMER WEATHER UPON US, there is nothing better than getting out and making the most of what our local waterways have to offer. Warm water, beautiful scenery and most importantly, hungry fish looking to fill up while they can and things are good. All the estuary legends will be on offer. Catching Flathead on “Pillies”, prawns or soft plastics never disappoint. Bream and Whiting on prawns or yabbies will get your heart racing and tastebuds tingling. Tailor off the beach will have you screaming, Cowabunga! For those after something more substantial, the regal Kingfish love to stalk the enclosed waters during

summer. Present a live squid or Yellowtail in the areas around fish holding structures like wharves or boat moorings and hang on. The next unattended rod whipped off a wharf by a rogue “Kingy” won’t be the first, or the last. Summer also sees battalions of succulent Blue Swimmer crabs make their annual march into the estuaries. Whilst the use of traps is banned in The Hacking, they are a welcomely regular by-catch for bait fishos. I’ve even seen brave snorkelers pluck them from the sand flats. Boil in salted water and dress with nothing more than freshly squeezed lime or lemon juice. For the more adventurous, chilli crab is a real delight. With the sun on your back and perhaps a cold drink nearby, you can’t lose. Any fish you catch will be a bonus!

Tree of Life THERE IS NOTHING MORE MAJESTIC THAN A GIANT OAK TREE THAT HAS WEATHERED GENERATIONS. It has grown from a seedling to a towering presence standing strong in the midst of time and storm. The deeper the roots the stronger the tree will be. Shallow planting gives way in the storms of life. One of the oldest living trees is a live oak named the Angel Tree. It is believed to be in excess of 1,500 years old. An estimated 65 feet tall with a circumference of over 25 feet, the Angel Tree shades approximately 17,000 feet of ground cover. It is not excessively tall but has an extensive canopy of limbs. Hurricane Hugo did significant damage to this amazing tree in South Carolina. Due to its deep roots it made a full recovery. Over time this ordinary tree grew into something extraordinary. It may not be the tallest or the most beautiful but it has grown into a history maker. 56

Want to know more about the Tree Of Life? Caringbah Baptist Church is hosting an afternoon event for woman on Saturday 2nd March. Visit www. ecbc.org.au for further information. Deep roots allow our exterior to be tossed in the wind while our foundation and heart are stable. The questions we will be helping women discover are: What is our life grounded in? What is our foundation? What are the things we deem important? by Robyn Lindsay

Doggy Grooming Grooming is important for the health and comfort of your dog. I am often lax in the grooming department and attract outrageous responses from avid doggie groomers with my dreadlocked mutt. Shamefully, with doggie in hand, I have retreated to the laundry for a good scrub but found myself at a loss how to start. Here are some simple tips for fuss free grooming that’ll leave your dog fresh and you feeling a champ: The first bath should be at 10 –12 weeks old. Dogs with medium length hair should be washed about once a month. A rinse with a jug of luke-warm water after a visit to the beach is ideal. Check the temperature of the water to make sure it won’t hurt your dog. To wash, start at the feet and work up the body, massaging shampoo into the fur. When you get to the head, point it downward and place your hand over the brow to cover his eyes. Rinse well. Shampoo left in the coat will make your dog itchy. Towel or air dry. A walk on a windy day works well.

Nail trimming takes care and attention. Starting at the back, take the leg and bring it back so it flicks up, cupping the paw in your hand so the pads of the feet are facing up. It the nails are white, cut the nail in front of the red vein running through it or you’ll hurt your dog. If they’re not white, cut small parts carefully until you see a dark dot which is the beginning of the nerve. Keep dog grooming equipment, including brushes, combs, shampoo and clippers together. And keep them visible to remind you to do it!

2013 tips and Fashion by Cherry Ripe Welcome to 2013 ladies. It's a shock to say that out loud and realise that we are starting another year again! Life is flying by - so fast - so quickly. My head is in a whirl. Just look at Cherry go …. Have you noticed? Now I handle both Fashion AND Beauty for Shine! Cherry is HOT! I have been bombarded with ..."What’s your new year's resolutions Cherry?" So I'm not going to do that to you, my beloved reader. Instead, I'm going to share my thoughts for 2013 with you. Hopefully you may gain some inspiration for yourself. 1. Life is speeding up because we pack so much into it. I don't have time to sweat the small stuff. I really don't. Remember that, especially when I / you are about to get upset over something small. Let it go. 2. I feel truly blessed. I am sooo lucky to have my own health, my family's health, a roof over my head and food on the table. I want to remember that, especially when I feel I am about to complain about something small. What about you? What are you grateful for? 3. If I really want to make a change – I’m just going to do it. Walk the walk girls. Talk is cheap. 4. Finally - a warning... 2013 is going to be EXACTLY like 2012 unless you do something different. It's just that simple. Now, let's get on with having some fun! The Beach Skirt - Effortless Chic Call me old-fashioned, but Cherry no longer feels comfortable walking around in my cossie in public. Hence the Body Wrap! My secret summer staple,

Walk the walk girls. Talk is cheap. perfect to wear as a skirt over your swimsuit! Pick a colour, print or design to match your cossie. Made from fast drying, high-grade Lycra that will help firm thighs and butt. Not that we need it of course girls – wink! wink! Wear it solo with your swimmers, with a loose cotton t-shirt or team it with a white cotton dress. Wear it: as a Belly Band as a Bustier (boob tube) or... as a Mini Skirt post pregnancy, showing off your great legs and baby! One Size Fits all. Wait till you see Kim Kardashian in hers!

Floaty Fabrics for Summer Freedom As the summer temperatures hit the high 20's, 30's and heaven forbid the 40's, we need to “Keep Calm and Carry On”. Fabrics play an important part in keeping relaxed and comfortable. If you plan on a day outdoors, aim for pure silks and breezy cotton materials. These help your skin breathe and feel lightweight to touch. Coastal styling caters for these balmy days. Add sorbet colours and don't be afraid to clash them up with accessories and footwear. Take your creative flair from Morocco or our coastal beach houses. Free and easy living is good for the soul.
