There’s nothing wrong with being considered old-fashioned. I wear the title like a badge of honor. I like books I can hold (hardcover is even better), newspapers, a yearbook to flip through and real, printed photographs. Tangible things. Things I can touch, things that cause a rise in emotion in me, things I can show and share with others and, finally, things that I can go back to, hold or look through…and remember.
In my mind, and most likely yours, good parenting is also teaching values like this to our children. Like most parents of elementary-aged kids, we had folders sent home from the school each week full of our child’s art, graded work and all sorts of other things to review and consider. Of course, everything our child created was something we would cherish, right? But, early on, my husband and I decided there would have to be a way to identify those truly cherished items, condense the volume of papers stacking up in our closets and also have something to look back on when they are grown. This is when the “Keep It Forever” box was invented at our home. A place where our children got to decide where the very special, cherished items they created over the years would live…forever. Like a time capsule. We had one big Tupperware box per child for each year of elementary school and every week, we would sit with them and decide on items from their school folder that made the cut to go into the “Keep It Forever” box and what was recycled.
This Annual Report is a keeper. It should go in your own “Keep It Forever” box so you can hold it, show and share it with others someday and... remember. WHAT a year. WHAT an impact.
Together, we served a record-breaking 39,000 individuals and families this past year… 20,796 of those came through our Food Pantry. We can’t help but look back in awe of how much we accomplished when we put our hands, hearts, dollars, and minds together. Many families were able to rebuild their lives during a pandemic, put food on the table, keep a roof over their heads, or find stability because of your generosity.
Like the beautiful wall at the agency that details those who made significant contributions so we could help others this year, or the many photographs of our Past Presidents who made their own contributions over many years and finally, to the last gift of love from Leni Bendorf, a 101-year-old Holocaust survivor (of blessed memory), whose legacy blanket she created up until she passed this year, can be touched and held for generations to come; we MADE MORE POSSIBLE when it all seemed impossible. We did it together. And that is a memory we will keep forever.

The COVID-19 pandemic amplified the need for services to our local Jewish schools, especially for families and children with special needs. JFS, with support from the Jewish Federation of Greater Dallas, responded by providing teachers, school administrators, and parents additional support. In doing so, we addressed the stressors and anxiety that comes with virtual school, how to help their students/children through other unique challenges, and help the students catch up on learning. As a result, the agency saw a 314% increase in the total individuals served at the schools than last year.

Case Management is not a new service to JFS, but we did improve our approach to how it’s delivered. Previously provided by our therapists, case management involves coordinating services and referrals, outside of therapy, for clients. This past year, JFS added 4 full-time Case Managers to our staff so therapists could allocate more time to seeing clients and reduce our long waitlists for therapeutic interventions.
The PLAN “People Living Active Now” program is dedicated to providing comprehensive support toward a meaningful life for individuals with mental health challenges and their families. Our accredited Clubhouse is an evidence-based psychosocial model of rehabilitation. With meaningful work and relationships, it of fers a place where individuals gain confidence to move from isolation to engagement. Members and staff work alongside each other to prepare lunches, facilitate classes, plan social events, and pursue and celebrate employment and educational gains. The PLAN Connections team is a new addition in 2021 and is made up of Case Managers and Certified Peer Support Specialists who help with needs related to housing, medical concerns, benefits and emotional support. To learn more about plan visit planntx.org or call (972) 690-7526.

Older Adult clients served with care management or counseling of Older Adult clients who worked with a licensed clinician one-on-one remained independent and living in their own homes of Older Adult clients improved or maintained their mental health New Holocaust Survivors served last year
Since the start of the pandemic, the demand for senior services that address growing social isolation has been outpacing the community’s ability to respond. Until recently, the Older Adults program had limited video platforms available or the equipment needed to provide virtual services. Through a grant from Network of Jewish Human Service Agencies (NJHSA), we now offer Uniper Care technology equipment and services that are easy to use regardless of age or challenges like dementia.
JFS received grants from Jewish Federations of North America, Network of Jewish Human Service Agencies (NJHSA), Kavod Shef, and Uniper to help Holocaust survivors in the DFW area with counseling, psychotherapy, care management, financial assistance, technology, and non-medical home care to help maintain their independence and quality of life. During COVID-19, 43 new clients were served from the prior year due to our focused outreach to the community.

“My father has never been one to ask for help. When my mother died last year from COVID-19, he declined my offer to move in with my wife and me in Oklahoma. I was nervous that the isolation would take its toll, as he is 83 years old and hasn’t been in the best of health for a few years now.
He has been a client of JFS for four years and I couldn’t have been more thankful for their Older Adult services over the past few months. They deliver meals to his door weekly through their Kosher Home Delivered Meals program and a volunteer calls him every other Wednesday to check in. He tells me that he can’t wait to meet his “Friendly Visitor” in person once it’s safe to do so.
His therapist even applied for Uniper Care technology on his behalf and to my surprise, he told me he uses it to watch fitness videos and old concerts regularly. I saw him for the first time since my mother’s funeral last month and I couldn’t believe how great he looked. JFS took care of my Dad when I couldn’t, and for that, I can never thank them enough.”
“I was one of thousands who lost their job in March of 2020. I was working in shipping and had no degree. I had a buddy offer me a room in his apartment for cheap while I looked for a new job. After applying and hearing nothing for a few weeks, I started working the to-go counter at a Tex-Mex chain. I made just enough to make ends meet but got sick of working customer service.
The problem was, I didn’t have any of those fancy corporate skills. I found JFS on LinkedIn and saw that they had career coaching and skills training.
I reached out to one of the coaches and he directed me to Intake. I started meeting with a coach 1:1 and took their virtual Microsoft Office courses.
I was still applying to jobs, but then I started to hear back. After five interviews, I accepted a job doing data input for an insurance company. I can finally move back into my own place and have started saving for a new car. I would recommend the Career and Financial Services at JFS to anyone down on their luck. If they can help me, they can help anybody.”
The silver lining of working remotely for the past 18 months is that our services are now more accessible to job seekers than ever before. Our Microsoft Training Courses, which originally launched in 2016 and served an average of 8 people per 6-week class, pivoted to an online version. We are now able to reach clients across Dallas and the U.S. with free, live instruction, multi-day courses and our clients walk away
knowing how to use these critical business tools at beginner, intermediate, and advanced levels. We are now seeing up to 50 people attending sessions at any given time and, in turn, candi dates are now more confident in their abilities, more marketable, and can achieve higher-paying jobs all in order to become more self-sufficient. For more information visit jfsdallas.org/services/career/ or call (469) 206-1670.
During the pandemic, we served an average of 750 families each week during our drive-thru food distribution. Even before this, it was clear we needed to expand our indoor Food Pantry. The drivethru offered a unique opportunity to do construction without service disruption. At the end of the fiscal year in July and August 2021, the community raised $184,000 for all the finishing costs and technology needed to return indoors. Overall, the community helped raise $730,000 for construction and overhead. As of December 2021, we returned to our client-choice model in our new 3,000 square foot pantry.
In 2021, we also expanded our Kosher Corner which is coupled with a new Jewish Community Outreach Initiative to help community members overcome barriers to accessing their basic needsall in a confidential manner.

Our partnership with JFGD is stronger than ever. With their increasing support, advocacy, and connections, we have been able to improve and expand our service offerings including schoolbased services for children and teachers, diagnostic testing, the Food Pantry and Kosher corner and added security measures through the Jewish Community Security Initiative to ensure our staff, volunteers and the community in our care are safe, secure and supported. We are grateful for the relationship we have to ensure the needs of our Jewish clients are addressed now and in the future.
There are more than 30,000 Holocaust Survivors living at or near poverty in the U.S. Many are choosing between heat or food, medicine or rent. Recognizing the importance of reaching any Survivor regardless of where he or she lives, Seed the Dream Foundation partnered with KAVOD to establish the KAVOD Survivors of the Holocaust Emergency Fund (SHEF). KAVOD SHEF exponentially multiplies the dollars and vital services available to these individuals. JFS Dallas is proud to be one of the recipients of this grant and will continue to expand support services to survivors in our area.
Both of these are still significant services offered by the agency in collaboration with the Jewish Federation of Greater Dallas. This program handles everything from assessment of need, arrangements with the funeral home and cemetery, to securing a Rabbi for the burial. When an unaffiliated individual needs an indigent burial or needs assistance from a Rabbi, we are able to connect them with Rabbi Howard Wolk, JFS’ Community Chaplain, to provide support in a timely and respectful manner.
The Priya Fund was created to assist with the financial impediments associated with infertility or adoption. Since its inception in 2010, Priya has assisted 28 couples in the Dallas area and 15 babies have been born. In the last year, we welcomed another Priya baby! Additionally, Priya successfully reached more than 89 people with our first-ever panel discussion about the emotional, physical and spiritual effects on fertility struggles.

Facilitated by Beth Broodo, MS, LPC, RYT, Binah Cancer Support Services integrates psychology and Jewish perspective into therapy. 32 individuals received Binah Cancer Support Services this year.
“I was diagnosed with stage 2 breast cancer in 2019. I felt extremely lucky that we caught it relatively early and after a year of aggressive treatment, I have now been in remission.
Having to go to chemotherapy appointments alone and being immunocompromised during a pandemic really took a toll on me. I reached out to my Rabbi for guidance and I am glad that he referred me to Beth Broodo and the Binah Cancer Support Services at JFS.
I feel like the other women in the support group truly understand my experience. Some of the women have been cancer-free for years and I can look up to them as a source of wisdom and inspiration.
Since starting services for cancer survivors at JFS, I not only found an outlet for the emotions surrounding my diagnosis, but lifelong friends as well.”
$21,000 was awarded to Priya recipients this fiscal year
The Priya Endowment Fund at the JFS Foundation grew by $5,542
Thank you to the members of our Major Donor Giving Society for contributing gifts of $1,800 and above from August 2020-July 2021.
Giving levels are determined by the cumulative amount given to JFS or the JFS Foundation within our fiscal year. Please note that this amount does not include in-kind donations.

Established in 2012, The JFS Foundation supports the long-term viability of the mental health and social services of Jewish Family Service through planned giving and endowments. It allows thoughtful, generous people to make a lasting difference in our community for generations by ensuring the availability of JFS’ high-quality, accredited services for any child, teen, adult, or older adult in need.
Establishing a fund or endowment to the Foundation is an investment in the long-term success and viability of the programs and services of JFS. While a yearly contribution to JFS makes an important, direct, and immediate impact, a Foundation fund helps secure the future of JFS services in the community.
JFS FUNDHOLDER SPOTLIGHT: ETHEL SILVERGOLD ZALE FOOD PANTRY FUNDI was introduced to Tikkun Olam at an early age. I remember sitting at my mother’s side as she paid her monthly bills. She had a small stack of dollar bills and she let me put a dollar in a few envelopes that she chose. I asked her what the dollar bills were for. She told me that not everyone was as blessed as we were and the dollars were for those in need and children who might be hungry.
My mother was a young widow with limited funds, and three young children to raise, but she taught me by example our moral duty to help the less fortunate. Her words guided me throughout my life.
Jewish Family Service offers a multitude of services that address the many challenges faced throughout a lifetime: from offering financial assistance to couples struggling with infertility, to mental health and social services for children and adults, through career and financial services, the Food Pantry to feed the hungry, to the needs of the aged, and finally Rabbinical and grief counseling. There are many more programs created to answer every need that Jewish Family Service is presented. The expanding range of diverse services that JFS addresses for all ages, faiths, and backgrounds convinced me that this was the agency for which I wanted to work and give my charity and time.
I have worked for Jewish Family Service as a volunteer for over 25 years. I founded the Woman to Woman luncheon and the Society of Life to raise much-needed funds for the work of Jewish Family Service. I am proud and grateful for the continued support and community awareness that these events have provided for JFS. I have been given the honor of becoming a lifetime member of the Board of Directors of JFS. On my 85th birthday, my children and grandchildren honored me by the establishment of the Ethel Silvergold Zale Food Pantry Fund through the Jewish Family Service Foundation. I hope my service to Jewish Family Service has been a fitting memorial to my mother who taught me the meaning of Tikkun Olam.

When I think about the last year - in the middle of the pandemic - I can’t help but continue to be grateful for all we have accomplished at Jewish Family Service. We have seen the agency rise to new challenges with grace, dedication, and a lot of hard work.
I’m very proud to lead our JFS Board of Directors, and I truly appreciate their continued support and engagement. Together, even virtually, we continued to move the agency forward. Whether it be updating our bylaws, improving and modifying processes and procedures, volunteering, taking part in helping the Food Pantry Expansion come to fruition, overseeing another record-breaking diaper collection, hosting our first-ever Staff Appreciation picnic, or the Federally Qualified Health Center feasibility study, we didn’t let the current challenges we faced impede our important work.
As usual, JFS has once again risen to the occasion with the help of our amazing community. Due to your support, JFS helped make more possible for those in need, at a time when the need was greater than ever before. It is truly humbling to be surrounded by donors, volunteers, staff members, who ask themselves, “What can I do to make a difference today?”
With sincere gratitude,
