ANNUAL REPORT 2016-2017 Jewish Family Service of Greater Dallas Jewish Family Service Real lives. Real progress.

GRATITUDE & AWE

Dear Friends,

It is with gratitude and awe that we share this annual report with you; Gratitude for the support of our donors and volunteers who are vital to our mission; Gratitude to the Jewish Federation of Greater Dallas as well as the many foundations who understand and appreciate the special way JFS opens its doors to people in need and meets them on their terms; Gratitude to United Way of Metropolitan Dallas and the Rees-Jones Foundation; Gratitude for our Board of Directors where each member finds ways to move JFS forward, and gratitude for a dedicated, professional staff who believe in our mission and live it daily. Finally, gratitude for our 11,000+ clients who believe in us and trust us to help them through the crises they are facing.

The awe comes from looking back at the year that has passed and being amazed by all that we have accomplished. We launched a new partnership with Jubilee Park, completed the merger with Planned Living Assistance Network (PLAN), were reaccredited by the Council on Accreditation, said goodbye to longtime CEO, Michael Fleisher, all while continuing to offer the highest level of service to all of our clients. This could not have happened without the collaboration and support of individuals working toward a common goal. The Board of Directors set that goal to be an Open Door to All in Need, regardless of race, religion, ethnicity or ability to pay. It is a bold goal. It establishes a very high moral standard that runs through the fabric of our daily lives at JFS. It is part of every decision we make when helping others.

It may also be the reason that demand for our services continues to increase and, in some areas, exceeds our ability to keep up with the resources required. We are taking steps to strengthen our institutional infrastructure so we can handle the growth in a disciplined way. We are also identifying the services we do really well and seeking new ways to offer them to clients. Every major program we offer has the opportunity to grow services and revenues without compromising our core values or mission.

There is one thing we know for sure – unfortunately, there will always be people fighting food insecurity, abuse, addiction, depression, anxiety, mental illness, unemployment or the challenges of aging. With your continuing support, Jewish Family Service of Greater Dallas will always be a safe place for them to turn to for the help they need. Over the course of the year to come, we will share new JFS initiatives with our entire community of supporters. On behalf of the entire board and staff, we want to thank you for being part of our community.

Sincerely,

CHILDREN & TEENS

School Intervention

Children in the Dallas Jewish Day Schools continue to receive personalized in-school services and assessments to meet their unique needs and challenges thanks to generous funding from the Dallas Jewish Women International Philanthropic Fund, the David & Gusta Rosenberg Foundation and the Jewish Federation of Greater Dallas. The School Intervention Specialists play a vital role in helping children with special needs challenges to reach their fullest potential emotionally, behaviorally, socially and academically. These staff members also provide advocacy, strategic guidance and professional support to parents, teachers and school officials that help facilitate the student’s success at school, at home and in the community. Located primarily in the schools, the School Intervention Specialists meet weekly with student and/or faculty and parents, and offer group services like social skills groups and groups addressing bullying. The School Intervention Specialists also provide education and training to school faculty, staff and parents with workshop topics ranging from “Helping Children to Deal with Hate” to “Grief Support for Yourself, Your Children and Family.”

Diagnostic Testing

With generous funding from the Jewish Federation of Greater Dallas, we were able to hire a full time PhD Diagnostic Specialist to provide diagnostic testing for those with special needs, with a specialized focus on testing children who might fall on the autism spectrum. We have also created a coordinated “Autism Team” as a specialized component of our diagnostic testing service. The Autism Team can not only provide the testing, but connect families to the follow up services needed for children identified on the spectrum including occupational therapy, speech therapy, school based intervention services and parent/teacher support in working with the child. The Autism Team has expanded our initial testing services and built them into a coordinated approach to care that has significantly improved outcomes for children with autism in their schools and at home.

An eight-year old boy, Jake, was referred to JFS from Child Protective Services (CPS) and Court Appointed Special Advocates (CASA). Jake was displaying signs of severe aggressive behavior and underdeveloped language skills, and his symptoms were only getting worse. Sadly, Jake was being bounced around the foster care system, resulting in a lack of stability in his life. In the past, Jake had been brought to several hospitals in the area for testing, but the results were inconclusive. This made it particularly difficult for anyone to learn how to communicate with him or manage his negative behavior patterns. Concerned for Jake’s well-being and his future, CPS sent him to JFS for further testing and evaluation.

Through JFS’s Children with Special Needs Program, our psychologists conducted a complete battery of neuropsychological tests, observed Jake in multiple settings and worked with everyone involved in the child’s life—the foster family, teachers, CASA representatives, school officials and medical doctors. Once a full diagnosis was reached, our team of psychologists and mental health counselors were able to develop a highly specialized treatment plan tailored to meet his unique needs. We are pleased to report that Jake has recently been adopted and lives with a loving family in the Greater Dallas area and has made measureable improvements in his emotional health, behaviors and relationships.

This year, we held the inaugural “SNP Honors” event through the Special Needs Partnership of Jewish Family Service. The event honored two community leaders, Eileen Kreisler and Laura Seymour, who have served this community as outstanding contributors and role models for advancing the special needs movement. The incredible turn out to this special evening was a testament to their far-reaching impact.

Sadly, Jake was being bounced around the foster care system, resulting in a lack of stability in his life.

New Parenting Education Class

We added a new parenting education class to offer additional support to families utilizing mental health services. The 10-week course follows the Conscious Discipline curriculum, focusing on developing discipline within children. The core methodology is based on four essential components that are scientifically and practically designed for success, and uses everyday events to cultivate emotional intelligence through a self-regulation program integrating social-emotional learning and discipline.

ADULTS

Expansion of Addiction Management Services

The number of people struggling with a personal addiction and those directly affected by a family member’s challenges led JFS to seek additional support for our Addiction Management Services. Addiction carries a stifling negative stigma that can cause people to hide their problem until the consequences can’t be ignored. Thanks to increased funding from the Jewish Federation of Greater Dallas and United Way of Metropolitan Dallas, we were able to expand our comprehensive, accessible, and ongoing support for these clients.

PLAN is now a program of JFS

Breast Cancer Support Services

The prevalence of those diagnosed with breast cancer in our community continues to rise. Cancer Support Services at JFS provide a wide range of assistance for women who have been diagnosed with breast cancer at any time in their lives, as well as support for their family members, through group therapy and modified yoga classes. Our professional staff also provide one-on-one counseling for women who have been diagnosed with breast cancer and in-home counseling for those women whose illness limits their mobility.

As of August 1, 2017, JFS and Planned Living Assistance Network (PLAN) completed our merger, with PLAN becoming a program area at JFS. PLAN will continue to operate curriculum geared towards psychosocial education and community involvement through programs like PLAN-It-4Ward. The addition of PLAN furthers both their mission and ours by expanding programming to comprehensive wraparound services for those with persistent and chronic mental illness.

FAMILY VIOLENCE

INTERVENTION

Bill is the father of two children, son Adam and daughter Christy. For years, Adam and Christy were subjected to physical, emotional and sexual violence. When Adam and Christy were seven years old, their mother was killed in a car accident, resulting in Adam and Christy being removed from their dad’s house and placed with their grandmother, Joyce.

Joyce had been raising Adam and Christy for the past seven years before coming to JFS. Due to their early childhood experiences and abuse from their father, Adam and Christy became two angry, violent teenagers themselves. They continued the cycle of abuse, repeating the model they learned from their father, and became bullies and physically aggressive. After many years of struggling to raise these two children, Joyce reached her breaking point and sought help at JFS.

Since coming to JFS just over a year ago, Joyce, Adam and Christy have made tremendous progress in breaking the cycle of abuse. In therapy, each family member set concrete, measurable goals. Adam and Christy’s grades and behavior have improved. Both Adam and Christy have learned to de-escalate and avoid fighting at school and at home. Both have discovered two strengths that increase their self-worth – excelling in sports and maintaining steady jobs. Joyce established clear consequences for being badgered, and clear rewards when she “catches them doing well.”

This family has ongoing needs and struggles, but they report that their home is much more peaceful, due to better limits and consequences, having a place to air their frustrations, grief and loss, and having ongoing monitoring of safety. Without JFS’s involvement, this family would have continued to escalate as the children got older – with more serious consequences.

6

OLDER ADULTS

AWARE Program

Through a grant from AWARE, JFS is helping older adults with Alzheimer’s Disease and related dementias live independently in their own homes for as long as they desire and can do so safely. Through our counseling/ care management process, these older adults are better able to access needed services available at JFS and wellness maintenance, allowing them to continue to lead their lives with dignity and independence.

Chaplaincy

Our Chaplaincy Services are an integrated component of our services to older adults, while also addressing the needs of anyone in the community. The Chaplain is available to meet with people of any faith to assist in times of transition or crisis, including end-of-life support; visiting the ill in hospitals or health-care facilities, or those receiving health-care at home; visiting people in assisted-living facilities, nursing homes, or prison; and performing burial services for the indigent. The Chaplain also works with hospice agencies including VITAS Healthcare, which is accredited by The National Institute for Jewish Hospice.

Chaplaincy Services are an important, proven service component in many communities across the country. Whether the chaplain visits the sick, facilitates spiritual support and healing groups, provides pastoral counseling to someone affected by emotional trauma or comforts the bereaved, the importance of a spiritual component in healing, recovery, caregiving and end of life issues is increasingly recognized.

Kosher Home Delivered Meals

Kosher Home Delivered Meals are available to people in our community who adhere to Kosher dietary requirements. These provide adequate, well-balanced, home delivered meals to temporarily or permanently homebound people who are unable to shop for and/or prepare meals for themselves. This program allows them to remain independent and at home.

CAREER &

EMPLOYMENT

Working Families Success Model

The Working Families Success Model is an integrated, bundled approach to services that help clients overcome financial barriers and advance economically. Finanicial Support from United Way, the Communities Foundation of Texas, and The Dallas Women’s Foundation has enabled us to better assist our clients through this best practice model.

Key components of our Working Families Success Model include:

Employment Services

To help clients of all educational backgrounds and employment status gain or regain employment, we offer resources that include one-on-one job search guidance, networking groups, the Job Search Resource Center, workshops and job fairs.

Income Support Services

Through case management, emergency financial assistance, benefits support, and the JFS Food Pantry, we are able to offer income support services in order to help clients maintain or return to financial independence.

Financial Coaching Services

Financial seminars and one-on-one budget counseling offer clients practical tools for financial health.

Microsoft Office Classes

Designed for clients to acquire skills in order to improve their employability, this completely free course introduces participants to the Microsoft Office suite of computer programs.

Over four weeks, the Career Counselor comprehensively explores Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook. Upon completing the course, participants are able to efficiently use these programs and access much needed employment opportunities.

FOOD PANTRY & EMERGENCY SERVICES

The Food Pantry has expanded food donations through the following new partnerships:

ALDI Starbuck’s Trader Joe’s Snap Kitchen Market Street Kroger North Texas Food Bank through produce distribution at the monthly Mobile Food Pantry

VICKERY MEADOW COLLABORATIVE FOOD PANTRY has expanded their reach to include an additional zip code, 75243.

The 2nd edition of the JFS CAN DO COOKBOOK was selected to be used in the East Dallas Hunger Coalition’s 2016 Senior Hunger Pilot Project which educates older adults on hunger.

THE “FOOD PANTRY EXPERIENCE” offers students a simulation of shopping for groceries when living at the poverty line. The youth groups start with a discussion about hunger, health, and the kinds of food that can be purchased on a limited income. Participants then shop at a nearby Wal-Mart and finish out the experience by restocking the shelves in the Food Pantry with the food that was purchased. This is a powerful program for children of all ages.

On April 27th, we held our new spring fundraising event, Just For Show. Saturday Night Live writer and Weekend Update anchor, Colin Jost, delivered a hysterical performance at the historic Majestic Theatre in downtown Dallas. WFAA Daybreak Anchor and event emcee, Ron Corning, also had the audience laughing.

The highlight of the evening was a formal farewell to our longtime CEO, Michael Fleisher. Fleisher, who retired in March after 23 years of leadership, took the opportunity to look back over his tenure with jokes and gratitude.

A huge thank you to our event CoChairs Fonda and Jay Arbetter, Gilian and Steven Baron, Beth and Larry Konig, Melissa and Bart Plaskoff, and Paige and Marc Sachs, as well as Honorary Chairs Linda and Dave Garner and Ethel Zale.

NEW AT JFS DALLAS

THIS YEAR

North Texas Food Bank Mobile Pantry

Jubilee Park Partnership Mental Health Services

JFS is now able to offer fresh produce to our clients at no cost due to our partnership with the North Texas Food Bank Mobile Pantry.

Our June mobile pantry day was our largest to date with 200 families lining up for produce and Fourth of July cookout supplies.

The NTFB truck parks in the JFS parking lot on the 4th Wednesday of every month from 10:00 am to 12:00 pm. The remaining donations are distributed in the pantry for the rest of the week.

With generous support from The Rees-Jones Foundation, we formed a partnership with the Jubilee Park Community Center to provide mental health services to children and their families who live in the Jubilee Park neighborhood in South Dallas.

Our expert staff are providing crisis intervention, diagnostic assessment, and play therapy for children using specialized intervention resources that involve both the child’s family and school. These services are offered in space provided by Jubilee Park to make them accessible and part of the community.

United Way Expanded Funding

United Way of Metropolitan Dallas continued their generous support of JFS by awarding Community Impact grants in the area of health, income and basic needs programs to the community. In addition to previously funded programs at JFS (Food Pantry, Career & Employment Services, Mental Health and Family Violence programs) we were awarded two additional grants for 2016-2019: Working Families Success and Addiction Management. JFS remains one of the top 10 funded United Way agencies in the area.

JFS Building Refresh Project

COA Reaccreditation

If you haven’t been over to the JFS office recently, please stop by. The building underwent a “refresh” spearheaded by board member, Julie Liberman. The JFS building looks great; we have painted all the walls, added new carpet, updated the reception area and added a fresh coat of paint to the building. You will also see some wonderful art on the walls, generously donated by the talented artist, Artyce Colen.

In July, JFS had a site visit by the Council on Accreditation, an independent, nonprofit, human service accrediting organization. As a result, we were reaccredited for another four years. This affirms every service area, and that the fiscal, administration, and governance of the agency meet or exceed best practice standards. JFS remains the only North Texas organization that has been accredited for the number and types of services that we provide.

JFS FOUNDATION

Established in 2012, the JFS Foundation supports the longterm viability of the mental health and social services of Jewish Family Service through planned giving and endowments. It allows thoughtful, generous donors to make a lasting impact in our community for generations.

FOUNDATION FUND SPOTLIGHT: THE MORCHOWER FAMILY PHILANTHROPIC ENDOWMENT FUND FOR CHILDREN AND ADOLESCENTS IN CRISIS

We sat down with Dr. Gary and Bette Morchower in their home to discuss their fund at the JFS Foundation. The Morchowers have a 40-plus year history with JFS, including serving the agency through many roles and now as Foundation fundholders. Note: Dr. Gary, as he is known, turned off the Dallas Cowboys game for this interview, showing a true passion for the work of the JFS Foundation.

What inspired you to start your fund at the JFS Foundation?

Bette: We know that Jewish Family Service is always there meeting the needs of the growing population and the growing need in Dallas. We thought it was so meaningful as it serves a first response to an immediate need and is imperative for providing proper care. Our fund will be available for those in immediate need –for those in crisis who need intervention, counseling and support.

Dr. Gary: After having practiced for 45 years in this community, one of the glaring needs that is so readily visible is the need for psychiatric services, counseling and care for so many children and families in this community. So many people cannot afford proper psychological and psychiatric services, and their needs are frequently unmet. Bette: This fund will enable them to receive this care.

What are your hopes for your fund as it continues to grow and support JFS?

Bette: There are so many that have immediate needs, and thats why we use “in crisis” to distinguish the fund. Gary being a pediatrician saw firsthand the need.

Dr. Gary: It’s frustrating as a physician, because you’re able to treat things like pneumonia and ear infections, but when it comes to children that are in crisis, it becomes very difficult because you’re limited with your resources. As an individual physician you can only do so much.

The Morchowers are proud parents to two children and a rescue dog. We thank them for their support of the JFS Foundation!
