August 3, 2024
As the summer draws to a close and we eagerly anticipate the beginning of the 2024-2025 school year, I am thrilled to share updates and insights from the Jamestown Public School District. This letter aims to keep our community informed about the significant strides and changes within our schools, guided by our recently updated strategic plan.
Our district’s mission, "Engaging students with challenging and innovative experiences to prepare them for future success," continues to be the North Star guiding Jamestown Public Schools. This vision is supported by
our strategic plan, which has been meticulously reviewed and updated for the 2024-2030 period. The goals embedded in the district’s strategic plan are monitored annually through progress monitoring at regular board meetings. Overviews of our Strategic Focus Areas, which each include 4-5 goals, are as follows:
• Culture of Learning : We aim to foster a healthy learning culture where students, parents, and educators feel connected to our mission. This includes annual surveys to increase stakeholder engagement and the inventory of engagement activities.
• Leadership for Learning : We believe in continuous improvement and high-quality instruction. Our goals include reporting proficiency on priority academic standards and providing leadership and mentorship opportunities for staff.
• Engagement in Learning : Ensuring all learners are engaged is crucial. We strive to maintain high levels of student commitment and reduce disengagement, alongside promoting personalized learning.
• Growth in Learning : Our objective is to monitor and support student growth in knowledge and skills. This involves interventions and enrichment activities aligned with priority standards as well as analyzing supports for our teaching staff.
• Resource Management and Planning : Effective allocation of resources is vital. We are focused on addressing facility needs, future enrollment, and ensuring equitable educational delivery.
If you would like more detailed information on the strategic plan, including each goal and annual plan
for progress monitoring, it can be found at www.jamestown.k12.nd.us.
Our progress and success are a testament to the dedication and support of our staff, parents, students, school board, and the wider Jamestown community. We are grateful for your continued trust and collaboration in providing a high-quality education for our children.
If you have any questions or need further information, please do not hesitate to contact me at the district office at 252-1950, reach out via email at Robert.Lech@k12.nd.us, or visit the office. Together, let’s make the 2024-2025 school year an enriching and successful one for all our students.
Sincerely, Dr. Robert Lech Superintendent of Public School District
Dear Jamestown High School families,
I am thrilled to extend a warm welcome back to all our students, parents, and guardians as we embark on another exciting school year at Jamestown High School. It is an honor to lead this school community filled with bright, curious, and motivated learners, supported by dedicated and compassionate families and staff. Together, we create an environment where every student can thrive and achieve to their full potential.
The start of a new school year always brings a sense of anticipation and enthusiasm. It is a time for new beginnings, fresh opportunities, and renewed commitments to academic excellence, personal growth, and community involvement. Whether you are returning to our school or joining us for the first time, you represent an integral part of the Jamestown High School family. Your presence enriches our community and contributes to the vibrant and diverse tapestry that makes our school so special.
As students return in August, they will notice some new adult faces in the classrooms and hallways of JHS. Karla Rosario returns to JHS and will teach
English. Zeb Willer and Morgan Haerer will join the math department while the Special Education Department welcomes Reagan Celaya. There will also be some new faces in the music department as Jacob Sherfy will teach choir and Brittany Schwingler will teach band, and Halsey Mahoney joins our JHS guidance team as a counselor. Both Barb Jorgenson and Taylor Winter will join our JHS support student support team as para-educators.
In addition to new faces, Jamestown High School made some changes to the planner:
• X replaced Twitter as a communication tool to share vital information and details to events held in the district. In the event someone is unable to access the information on the webpage, they may contact the Technology Department at (701) 252-1950 or at JPS.Webmaster@k12.nd.us.
• Students may still be late three times in a semester without penalty, but students will serve a 30-minute detention for their fourth and fifth tardy in a semester, and a one-hour detention will be issued for all tardies exceeding five. Students may be removed from a class after a 10th tardy.
• While our bell schedule did not change on Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday, it did on Wednesdays and that new schedule is posted on page
18 of the new student planner.
• All schedule changes must be completed by the fifth day of school each semester. If a student drops a class between day 6 and 14 of a semester, a “W” will appear in the transcript signifying the withdraw, and a “WF” will appear on the 15th day or any day after in that semester, signifying withdraw-fail.
• Perhaps the biggest change is in the area of technology. In the classroom setting, cellphones, ear buds, smart watches or privately owned tablets must remain in a bag or backpack at all times, unless a teacher allowed the device for the educational process. Students may check their messages during passing periods or while in the Commons. If discovered in violation of the policy, the student will surrender the electronic device to staff members and serve one hour of in-school suspension. In the first offense, students may have their phones back after school, but parents will pick up the device after school for any subsequent violations.
• For purposes of clarity, prohibited behaviors and substances are a part of this year’s planner.
• Any freshman, sophomore or junior enrolled in online learning for high school credit or dual credit will report to a designated classroom each day for the entire class period. Seniors will
check-in to the online instructor of that same room one day a week, and they may leave campus if their work is done and they have a minimum of a “C” average in that class.
To our parents and guardians, thank you for your continued trust and partnership. Your support and involvement are vital to the success of our students and our school. We encourage you to stay engaged, communicate openly with our staff, and participate in the various activities and events we have planned throughout the year. Together, we can create a strong and supportive network that empowers our students to excel.
As we navigate the challenges and uncertainties of our ever-changing world, let us remember the importance of kindness, resilience, and community. By working together, we can overcome any obstacles and create a positive and productive school year for all.
Once again, welcome back to Jamestown High School. Let us make this year a memorable one, filled with learning, growth, and countless achievements. I look forward to seeing our learners walk the hallways once again in August.

Middle school can be a confusing time, for parents as well as for their kids. Middle school students are becoming more independent yet still need parental support as much as ever. JMS parents are invited to stay actively involved in their child’s school. Research shows that children whose parents are engaged in their education are more likely to achieve academic success. An orientation session for 6th grade students and their parents will take place the evening of Thursday, August 15, from 6 to 7 p.m. This orientation session will give students an opportunity to meet their teachers and tour their classrooms prior to the start of school. During this orientation, students and parents will meet with teachers, counselors and principals. There is no need for 6th graders to bring school supplies until the first day of school.
Jamestown Middle School open house for students in grades six through eight, “What’s Poppin’ at JMS,” will be held Tuesday, August 27, 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. JMS students will be their families’ personal tour guide to view their classrooms and meet their teachers while snacking on popcorn.
