Sedgefield’s Adamsleigh finally sells By CAROL BROOKS freelance writer cab1hp@gmail.com Those attending the Wyndham Championship at Sedgefield Country Club are always distracted from play on the 14th hole. The reason is the imposing, and partially hidden, mansion off Alamance Road, roughly surrounded by holes 12-14 along Alamance Road and the tee on No. 15. The house itself looked to be in good shape, but the outbuildings and grounds left a lot to be desired because the property had been unoccupied and for sale since before the tournament returned to Sedgefield Country Club in 2008. But the 2019 tournament goers will see an entirely different side of the site because Furnitureland South’s Jason Harris and his wife Jennifer are the new owners of Adamsleigh. “I think I’m a little crazy,” Harris said last week.

The family, which includes five children, have lived in the same home in High Point for 25 years and had been looking for something different. Harris and his brother Jeff had looked at Adamsleigh as an investment for several years, but something changed in Jason’s mind this year and he made an offer himself, at $2.4 million, quite lower than the asking price that has been as high as $6 million. “I had heard that the grandkids who now own the property were really wanting to sell it so I made an offer. I was really surprised they accepted,” Harris said. “I think they were ready for someone else to take it on. “It’s just a beautiful piece of land and property. It’s a great location.” The sale went trough in early November and Harris has spent that time hiring workers to remove a half-mile of chain link fence and clear the vegetation, in the process uncovering a stream, pond, waterfall and see Adamsleigh, page 3

Holiday vacation begins retirement for Greensboro Beautiful director By NORMA B. DENNIS FREELANCE WRITER ndworddesign@gmail.com

The Cedarwood Garden Club Holiday Decorations

The Cedarwood Garden Club has selected the Holiday Decoration Awards for the community. Our neighbors go to great lengths decorating for the holidays and it is always difficult to choose winners. (Top left) The Best Decorated Door is awarded to Selena Rogers, 106 Crest Hill Rd. (Top right) The Holiday Mailbox to Misty and Preston Burnette, 503 Fairidge Drive. (Bottom left) Meredith and Ron Chandler, 108 Sagewood Road win the Best Christmas Display Award. (Bottom left) Congratulations to Allison and Cam Tally, 106 Cottonwood Drive for being chosen for the Best Traditional Decorations.

As the holidays are winding down, many people throughout the Triad are preparing to return to work. Kathy Cates has no such plans however. After 30 years as executive directive of Greensboro Beautiful Inc., Cates has officially retired. “It is time,” the Jamestown resident said as she anticipated Dec. 21 – her last day on the job. Cates, who has a degree in non-profit management from Salem College, had worked with several nonprofit organizations, including the Eastern Music Festival, before getting the position of City Beautiful Director with the Greensboro Parks and Recreation Department. Greensboro Beautiful, told Cates about the position. “I came to work here in 1988,” Cates said. “I was an employee with the City of Greensboro and served as a liaison between the city and the non-profit Greensboro Beautiful. “I was a cog in the wheel,” she added with a smile. see retire, page 3

The opportunity to network, a review of the past year’s events, a preview of 2019 possibilities and good food were all part of the agenda at the Jamestown Business Association’s annual Christmas luncheon Dec. 14. Representatives from local businesses met in the Jamestown Town Hall community room for a relaxing, but informative meeting to conclude a year filled with activity. Some of the main events JBA sponsored for the community in 2018 were “Movie Nights in the Park.” It also held fundraisers for non-profits and supported events held by other organizations and the town. Most recently, JBA volunteers assisted the Jamestown Rotary Club with its annual Christmas parade. For the first time in the history of the parade, recognition for the Best Float and Best Car were presented to participants. Jamestown Mayor Lynn Montgomery and council members, who lead the parade, took time to review all the parade entries and select the winners. Best float was presented to Mitchell Grove United Methodist Church, and Best Car to Seniors Helping Seniors. These
