Penny Road development in limbo

The ground is cleared on Penny Road across from Florence Elementary School but that is just about the only thing that has happened in recent months. Now the developer plans to scale back a portion of the original development.

At the April 23 High Point Planning and Zoning Commission meeting, Keystone Homes/ Diversified Estate Holdings, LLC, offered some conditions to a March rezoning request for a 9.7-acre parcel west of the intersection of Penny and East Fork roads. However, Herbert Shannon, senior planner for the city, said these did not address key issues. As a result, the Planning and Zoning Commission unanimously recommended denying the rezoning request.

On May 15, the High Point City Council heard the request, which had some major changes

from the initial proposal. “Staff now recommends approval,” Shannon said. “The applicant has come a long way from their initial proposal. Staff is of the opinion that we have a better proposal than we had a month ago.”

Retiring from one service career only to serve in another

At an age when most teachers are retiring, David Poston is beginning to take a teaching career more seriously.

Having worked as a teacher’s assistant at CJ Greene Education Center for four years, Poston is now studying to get an alternative teacher’s license in classroom management. The irony is that Poston had already retired from one career before embarking on his current one.

Originally from High Point, Poston graduated from Andrews High School and received a master’s degree in public administration from Appalachian State University.

education Center, uses large and small balls and everything in between, along with a variety of other equipment, to lead students in daily physical activities.

“I had always wanted to be in law enforcement, but after I graduated, I got a job as town manager at Long Beach, N.C., which is now part of Oak Island,” Poston said. “While I was there I spent all my time thinking about law enforcement and fire fighting.”

He later realized his dream and began working for the

ments to the intersection. Keystone Homes has reduced the maximum number of units from 56 to 33 on 4.8 acres below a Duke Energy right of way, which cuts through the property diagonally.

Even with these new conditions, the City Council was not satisfied and sent the revised request back to the Planning

and Zoning Commission. The new date will probably be June 28.

March meeting

In March Keystone Homes requested a rezoning from Conditional Use Agricultural (CU-AGR) to Conditional Zoning Residential Multifamily-16 (CZ RM-16) for multifamily development. This means up to 155 dwellings could be permitted on the parcel. The applicant proposes 3-and-4 story multifamily buildings with up to 56 units per building.

The remainder of the property is on the northeast corner of the site along Penny Road and was not part of the rezoning request. This 37-acre area is designated for up to 439 apartments and 41 single-family homes.

Shannon recommended denial in March, noting the presence of a Duke Energy easement and two electrical transmission

Modern Book Club celebrates upcoming 90th anniversary

The agenda for the Jamestown Modern Book Club may have changed since it was first organized in 1933, but the enthusiasm of its members is as strong as ever.

On May 24, the group gathered for a covered dish meal at the home of President Jo Marsom to celebrate the upcoming 90th anniversary of the club and to discuss the book The Uncommon Reader by Alan Bennett.

“We chose that book as our May selection because we were intrigued by the

premise of what would happen if Queen Elizabeth II developed a voracious appetite for reading,” said Marsom, who facilitated the meeting. “We talked about how reading would impact the Queen and the people around her.

“Even though the book is fiction, the characters seem very real. The book would not have been the same if the main character had not been the Queen.”

Decorations for the night lent themselves to a British theme and even many of the dishes shared were those fit for a coronation.

When asked if anyone had a favorite book they had read more than once, several admitted they did.

Former member Joan Brisley, who was interviewed later at her home at Pennybyrn, said she had read the book Gone with the Wind as a youth and five additional times – once each time she was pregnant. She still owns that book.

The Jamestown Modern Book Club began with 10 teachers who lived in the “teacherage” at Jamestown Public School and 10 ladies from the community. It was a way for the two groups who shared a common interest for reading to socialize. Membership then, as is now, was by invitation. All the ladies wore hats and gloves to the meetings, but that was discontinued as time passed.

Each member chose a book that had recently been published and once they had read the book passed it on to another member. Books progressed from member to member until everyone had read all of them by the end of the year. Meetings consisted of programs on various topics of interest.

“It was nice to be asked to join the group,” Brisley said. “I thought that passing the books around was an interesting way to read. Occasionally we would read a book I did not enjoy, but I would stick with it.

“Now I feel I am not going to waste my time and move on to another book,” the centenarian added. “I still enjoy reading and I enjoyed the many years I participated in the club. The best part was being together.”

Today members read the same book and meetings, which are held from September to May, include a discussion about it. Different members lead the discussions each month.

Needless to say, however, there is still plenty of socializing when the group gathers at the homes of different members.

“I enjoy being with these women,” said Sheree Marsh Crane, whose late mother was also a member of the club. “I like getting to know the women and their families.”

One of the newest members, Heather McKay, likes being challenged to read books she might not otherwise consider. McKay will serve as vice president for the upcoming year. Other new officers include Rebecca Rayborn, president; Patty Morris, secretary; and Vicki Norman, treasurer.

Books that will be discussed for 2023-2024 have already been selected. Normally books are “modern ones” – those written within the past five years. But to celebrate the longevity of the club, members have gone back in time to choose a variety of book titles. They also hope to participate in Greensboro’s One City – One Book once that book title has been announced in August.

Although short-term goals are important, members are already looking beyond the coming year.

“We want to concentrate on collecting information to use during the 95th celebration of the club,” Marsom said.

Burlington Police Department, remaining there for 13 years before moving to the High Point/Jamestown area and working for 13 years for the Guilford County Sheriff’s Office as a deputy.

Because of his rotating duty, Poston was able to volunteer as a tutor helping small groups in reading and math at Florence Elementary School where his daughter was a student. He retired from law enforcement at the age of 52 – a fact that pleased both his daughter and son.

“The last year, I started applying for a job as a teacher’s assistant,” Poston said. “I was praying about it and within the hour got a call from CJ Greene. It was the only school that called me.”

CJ Greene is a high school using an adaptive curriculum to serve students with special needs. Poston has worked there since 2018, most recently with Tom Anderson. When Principal Folice Bailey expressed her vision of having someone handle daily, organized physical activity for all students, Poston applied for and got the position.

“We moved from leisure time to structured time,” Poston said. “Our students need to move and exercise and they now do that. They have 30 minutes of activity each day either in the gym or outside. I cover all sports and do a different one each week.”

Poston admits his wife Melissa, inspired him to

teach. She has taught at the elementary and middle school levels and for the past few years has worked as a teacher at CJ Greene.

“My wife is the most caring person I have ever met,” Poston said. “She cares for the kids here as if they were her own. All the staff at CJ Greene care. It takes caring people to work with the special needs population.

“Where else besides teaching can you have such an impact on children? I still remember my first through sixth grade teachers. The more positive influence children have the better.”

Poston sees teaching as an extension of the service he did when working in law enforcement.

“We are put on earth to serve,” he said. “By working here I get to keep on serving. I don’t have a master plan. I just want to keep living.”

Do Companies Advertise Ineffective Supplements?

dear dr roaCh: I see supplements advertised on television that are supposed to clear “brain fog” and do many other beneficial things. Are these any good, and can they actually do the things that they claim? If they are effective, why aren’t they sold at drugstores? If not, how is it that companies are allowed to make these false claims and advertise these supplements on television?

— J.L.P.

dear J.l p.: I believe that there are over-the-counter supplements that are effective for treating some medical conditions, and there are a few instances in which there is strong evidence of benefit, such as a vitamin and mineral formula to slow progression of macular degeneration. Very often,

there isn’t enough data to be sure a supplement is either effective or ineffective.

It is certainly true that supplement companies sometimes make claims that they cannot support. By law, supplement advertising can claim to support a body part or function (which is why you see claims like “supports heart health”), but these claims must be followed by: “This statement has not been evaluated by the Food and Drug Administration. This product is not intended to diagnose, treat, cure or prevent any disease.”

Often, the advertising for a supplement is at odds with that statement, and there are many instances of supplement manufacturers having to pay fines or change their advertising. A supplement that is found to be unsafe can be removed from the market by the

FDA. In addition, any substance can be toxic if taken at a high enough dose. Vitamin A supplements are a good example.

The U.S. FDA does not regulate supplements the way they do prescription drugs, and supplement manufacturers do not need to prove that their products are effective. Further, there is strong evidence that some supplements sold in the U.S. do not contain as much (or any!) of the supplement they claim to provide. I always recommend getting a supplement that is verified by a third party, such as the U.S. Pharmacopeia or the National Science Foundation, if possible.

There are very few supplements proven to prevent problems, so I generally recommend against supplements in people who are healthy and have no symptoms. This definitely includes vitamin

supplements. Supplements may have benefit in relieving symptoms for some less-serious medical conditions, and physicians should be (or get) familiar with more common supplements, their potential benefits and their toxicities.

dear dr roaCh: I read your recent article on lichen planus. I have suffered with this for over two years. After doing a lot of research, I found that many people, like me, have diabetes. Nothing helped it, and the last treatment was too dangerous for me, although it did help me to lose 35 pounds and my sugar levels are now healthy. I understand that I can never get rid of lichen planus and that it’s just in remission now. — N.T.

Unfortunately, I could not confirm that either weight loss or better diabetes control improves the symptoms of lichen planus. Sometimes lichen planus becomes inactive on its own. Coffee Break

Salome’s Stars

week of June 12, 2023

arieS (March 21 to April 19)

You Ewes and Rams will find your ideas cheered by a mostly receptive flock. Those few dissenters could well be turned around by your charm and powers of persuasion.

tauruS (April 20 to May 20)

It’s time for the bold and beautiful Bovine to shake off the dust of the past and shape up new ideas for the future. This could surprise some folks, but they’ll soon adjust.

geMini (May 21 to June 20)

Those nagging new doubts about an upcoming decision should alert you to step back (at least temporarily) so you can reassess its potential impact from a new perspective.

CanCer (June 21 to July 22) That unpleasant situation you hoped would go away by itself needs immediate attention before it affects an upcoming decision. Expect your supporters to rally around your cause.

leo (July 23 to August 22)

Avatar: The Way of Water (pg-13) — James Cameron’s latest blockbuster reaches Disney’s streaming service on June 7, after bringing home $2.3 billion at the box office. As the sequel to Cameron’s 2009 film, The Way of Water takes place 16 years after Jake Sully (Sam Worthington) became part of the Na’vi, where he is now the chief and raises a family alongside his mate, Neytiri (Zoe Saldana). But the Resources Development Administration is as determined as ever to colonize Pandora, so Jake and his family are forced to move away from their home toward the reef

You’re moving up and away from that recent setback. But remain cautious about finances. An exercise in thrift today helps cushion a possible end-of-the-month money squeeze.

Virgo (August 23 to September 22) You’re still dealing with overtones of pessimism that cause you to doubt your ability to make some needed changes. But the negative pressures will ease up by week’s end.

liBra (September 23 to October 22) There could be some fallout from the way you handled a recent family problem. But those who know that you were in the right won’t hesitate to step in on your behalf.

SCorpio (October 23 to November 21) Financial strains ease by week’s end. Meanwhile, focus on cultivating that new relationship if you hope to have it blossom into something more meaningful.

SagittariuS (November 22 to December 21) Health matters once again dominate the

people, where they learn the way of water. If you thought the first film was visually appealing, the special effects of the second film will blow your mind.

The Idol (tV-Ma) — Euphoria creator Sam Levinson continues to push the envelope when it comes to his shows. The Idol , his latest project, focuses on pop star Jocelyn (Lily-Rose Depp) following a nervous breakdown that put her career on halt. Jocelyn meets modern-day cult leader Tedros (Abel Tesfaye), who ignites the fire inside her to get her career pumping again. This project, however, hasn’t had

week. Be careful not to ignore recurrences of an old problem. An almost-forgotten commitment resurfaces.

CapriCorn (December 22 to January 19) The emergence of an unusual selfish streak could dismay those close to you. Defy it — don’t justify it — so you can become your gracious self again.

aQuariuS (January 20 to February 18) Reassess your decision to stay with the status quo. It might seem like the sensible thing to do right now, but changes around you could make that choice a risky one.

piSCeS (February 19 to March 20) Move decisively, but cautiously, when dealing with a delicate personal matter. The fewer mistakes you make now, the less likely it is that the problem will recur later on.

Born thiS week: You can find beauty where many cannot, and you enjoy sharing your discoveries with others.

Shooting Stars (pg13) — Based on the 2009 book about LeBron James’ beginnings in basketball, this film centers on James and three of his best friends

who’ve been playing basketball together since they were kids. Even though the boys play for their own reasons, the love of the game and the love for their “Fab Four” unite them. So, when their coach threatens to separate them, they collectively decide to switch to a Catholic school to remain together. But this transfer comes with great obstacles that could tear the Fab Four apart on their way to securing a championship for their new school. towers that run diagonally through the middle of the site. This makes most of the site undevelopable, according to Shannon. Only a triangular area on the southwest portion of the site is developable where Keystone has proposed a 145-unit multifamily community.

Judy Stalder, the applicant’s representative, stated that when Keystone began looking at this property, which is adjacent to one of its other developments, the company assumed that the conditions would be similar, but that is not the case.

Several concerns were voiced by speakers including increased traffic in an already busy area on roads that were not built to handle it; addition of students at already overcrowded Florence Elementary, Southwest Middle and Southwest High schools; proposed four-story multifamily apartment buildings would overshadow adjacent existing single-family homes; potential stormwater problems and flooding; and removal of trees will increase soil erosion and decrease animal habitats.

Architects, Inc. for 18.4 acres fronting Deep River Road, Jamestown Parkway (formerly 201 Greensboro Road) and I-74 from Institutional (I) to Conditional Zoning Residential Multifamily-16 (C-RM-16) and Conditional Zoning General Business (CZGB). The Hannons propose to convert the former Presbyterian Home assisted living building into an apartment building with approximately 120 senior units comprised of studio, one bedroom and two bedroom plans. There also will be an internal self-storage facility and approximately 8,000 sq. ft. of retail space for the convenience of residents, such as a barber shop, beauty parlor, small grocery or retail use. Legacy at the Point is the tentative name and a portion of the project is expected to open by late 2024. The entire project will take about three years at a cost of at least $12 million.

There are challenges to renovating a building that has been empty for nearly 20 years. Vandals have targeted the site and removed all the copper piping in the building and copper shields on the roof. Water and electrical systems need upgrading and the roof replaced. And that is just the beginning. Hannon noted it would be more expensive to demolish the building than to renovate due to the large amount of concrete in the still-solid structure.

The back, or northern, portion of the property along Deep River Road is already developed with 88 townhome units, The Cottages. Some of these are Section 8 housing but Legacy at the Point will be more in line with the market. Residents will primarily be seniors 55 years and older, similar to The Cottages.

The six acres fronting Jamestown Parkway (Greensboro Road) features the 160,000 sq. ft. multistory assisted living building. The building has been vacant since

2005 when the Presbyterian Home moved to Colfax, re-branding in 2022 as Brightspire.

The property was sold in 2011 to Community Housing of High Point. Solution Architects purchased the property for $3.95 million in 2020.

The Hannons’ plans fit right in with High Point’s plans for redevelopment of the nearby Five Points area. Land Use Attorney Tom Terrell, representing Solution Architects, Inc., said the Hannons support the revitalization and the proposed renovation of the vacant building would be a catalyst for the Five Points commercial area as it would stabilize and promote future revitalization of this area.

“This is a huge building. It’s a huge undertaking,” John Hannon told local media in May. “We’re going to do our best to make this a shining gem in High Point.”

History George T. Penny, who later owned the imposing mansion at the corner of Greensboro and Penny Roads, now part of Pennybyrn, once owned the property along Jamestown Parkway in High Point. He sold that property and it later became the Methodist Protestant Children’s Home, which operated from 1910-1941.

Beginning in Denton, N.C., it soon needed a larger space. In 1912, Dr. J.R. Reitzel, who grew up orphaned, and Capt. A.M. Rankin, each offered $500 if the Home would move to High Point. Officials purchased 38 acres “on the Greensboro Highway” in 1913. This property is where the Eastgate Shopping Center is located today.

Additional property across Deep River Road (Presbyterian Home site) was purchased in 1918 where the boys’ dormitory was erected.

Penny probably did not own the property when it was sold to the Home. Several references indi-

cate a farm was purchased from J.J. Welch. However, along with his brother J.C. Penny, George helped finance the construction of the boys’ dormitory, which was named Penny Hall.

The children were required to keep up the buildings and work on the farm, supplying most of the needs for the Home. Summer gardens provided fresh vegetables that could be canned for later use. Livestock supplied pork and bacon, milk, butter, chicken and eggs. Additional property in the Sedgefield area grew grain for the livestock.

The Methodist Protestant Church and Methodist Episcopal Church, South, merged in 1939 into the United Methodist Church. Since there were larger children’s homes in Winston-Salem and Raleigh, all children were moved there and the High Point location closed its doors in July 1941. Approximately 120 children lived at the Home at the time.

After the children left, High Point College (now University) acquired the 132-acre property and used the dormitories as residences for married veteran students after World War II.

Following World War II, the Albemarle Presbytery approached the Presbyterian Synod of North Carolina “requesting the advisability of establishing a home for the aged.”

A $50,000 trust fund from the will of the late Mary Beale Burrus enabled the Presbyterian Home to

open. Mrs. Burrus and her husband, physician Dr. John Burrus, had long dreamed of a home with a caring and loving environment for the aged, according to a history of the Presbyterian Home by former resident Katherine Hardin Marsh Peyton. Dr. Burrus realized that many patients leaving the hospital had nowhere to go for convalescence.

In 1946, The Presbyterian Home purchased the property where the boys’ dorm was located, on the east side of Deep River Road, and opened a home for the aged on Jan. 21, 1952. It was the first retirement facility in the southeast to be accredited. The buildings were constructed in three stages, 1952, the 1960s and the 1980s. The 1923 building was used until 1986 when it was demolished for a newer facility.

When the Highway 311 Bypass project began in 1996, the State of North Carolina used eminent domain to take about one-third of the home’s 27.5-acre property, leaving no room for further expansion. With a long waiting list – and landlocked property – Presbyterian Home officials decided to construct a new 127acre campus in Colfax – River Landing at Sandy Ridge – and move residents there. The first residents moved in January 2003.

In 2005, Presbyterian Home management decided to completely close the Greensboro Road location and move all residents to River Landing.
