Writing this from my third week as Director here at The Arts Center, I don’t know what I can tell you about this wonderful organization that you don’t already know. Every day something exciting is happening—home-schooled kids come for art class, clients from Community Options learn about ceramics, the Woodchippers Group meets in the Hansen Studio, Artful Happy Hour, Classic Movie Night, Arts After School, adult classes, Rumble-in-the-Jungle, high-quality exhibitions, community theatre… And The Duhks? Playing in Jamestown? Here? Really? I am constantly blown away by the capacity The Arts Center has, the breadth of the programs here, and the organization’s commitment to the community—But you know all of this already, right? People have asked me about my “vision” for The Arts Center. While I am not without vision, The Arts Center is an organization that is here to provide Jamestown and the surrounding area with creativity, culture, and education. The vision it achieves is one that comes from you, the people The Arts Center serves. I invite you to stop by, say hello, and share with me your opinions on what The Arts Center can do to continue to keep the community culturally engaged. For me, art has always been the thing that comes along when life feels blurry or dark and makes it beautiful again. My vision is that the arts can do that for you too. Many have also asked me about making such a change, moving to North Dakota from Cape Cod. I love it here, and my only regret about moving to Jamestown is not doing it in time to make it to Taylor’s retirement send-off. Which sounds, deservedly, like it was a really great party.
