Soms is ek nogal verbaas oor die reaksie wat ek kry van party van Tert se stories. Vat nou die een van Tert in die houtwerk klas. Elke oproep wat ek ontvang het was 'n potensiële “Oom Buks storie”. Ek kon 'n boek geskryf het! Nie een van die manne wat my gebel het in verband met die storie het iets negatiefs oor Oom Buks Gouws gesê nie. Almal het net respek en hoë agting vir die betrokke onderwyser gehad. Oom Buksie was nou wel baie befoeterd, maar hy was altyd konsekwent. Wat vandag in die klas sou geld sou môre nog geld en oormôre en die dag daarna en so ook al die ander dae wat daarop sou volg. Behalwe vir oom Buks, was daar nog 'n paar ander wat ook verdien om onthou te word. Meneer Eugene Benade en Meneer Le Roux (Sirkus) is ook hoog op die lys. Heel onder is 'n aardrykskunde onnie wat meer as een kind se moontlike liefde vir die vak met een oorveeg kortgeknip het. En nou bedoel ek nie met 'n lat nie; ek bedoel soos in klap! Deur die gesig dat jy steier! Toe ons op skool was en ook daarna sou ons skaars 'n oog knip as ons sou hoor dat 'n bus of 'n trein oor hom en sy kar gery het.

Ons sou meer bekommerd oor die kar gewees het.

Dit klink dalk nie mooi nie, maar sommige onder-wysers in 'n mens se lewe onthou jy oor die positiewe en ander weer oor die negatiewe.

Meneer Benade het ysere dissipline gehandhaaf met 'n krieketkolf by die swembad en 'n dubbele springtou in die gim-nasium. Maar ons het ook besef dat dissipline tragedies en beserings voorkom. Vandag sou hy sweerlik toegesluit gewees het daarvoor.

Maar hy was nooit onredelik nie. Oom Sirkus het Engels in ons koppe probeer kry en by meer as een geleentheid het hy op sy lessenaar gaan staan en ons aan die genade van die Hemelse Vader opgedra as gevolg van ons onvermoë om die lastige taal met al sy tenses te bemeester. Maar, dis Oom Buksie oor wie manne dertigveertig jaar na matriek steeds praat.

Oom Buks was 'n jong onderwyser toe my pa Hoërskool toe is. Na my pa was daar al sy broers (my ooms).

Toe was daar 'n gaping tot ek Hoërskool toe is. Een na die ander is ek en my broers en my neefs by hom verby. Tot by my jongste broer

en toe tree hy af. Twee geslagte het hy onder hande gehad!

Maar, laat ek nie nou nostalgies raak nie. Kom ek vertel jou in watter bobaas planmaker Tert in oom Buks se klas ontpop het.

In standerd 8 het ons met 'n telefoontafel begin. Eers was dit net die raamwerk waaraan die laaikas en die pote vasgesit sou word. Alles met hand gereed-skap.

Oom Buks het vreeslik klem gelê op die haaksheid van elke liewe ding.

“Maans!” het hy vir my by meer as een geleentheid gesê, “'n mens kan 'n haaks laaikas net op 'n haaks raamwerk sit. En dan kan jy net haaks pote onderaan 'n haaks raamwerk sit. As iets skeef is, is die hele ding skeef en dan lyk dit soos 'n hond teen 'n boom! Verstaan jy?”

“Ja Meneer,” was my gereelde antwoord. In standerd 9 het ons die pote gemaak en onderaan die raamwerk vasgesit. Oom Buks het meer as een keer by Tert se model gaan staan en die winkelhaak in die hoeke gepas. Die hoeke was nie haaks nie. Tert kon dit nie regkry nie.

“Hoor hoe klink dit Oosthuizen!” het Oom Buks geraas terwyl die winkelhaak klokkeklok in die hoeke. “Dit klink soos 'n donkie wat gallop! Hoor jy Oosthuizen!” “ J a M e n e e r, ” h e t Te r t d a n geantwoord. “Jy sal nooit 'n kas én 'n laai ewe skeef kan maak dat dit inmekaar pas nie! Haaks goed kan pas! Hoor jy Oosthuizen?” “Ja Meneer.”

Nou; met die ding van die slang in die bottel wat vir die biologie onnie bedoel was en wat Tert die ewigheid ingestuur het en wat ons vir meer as 'n maand ledig laat sit het elke liewe houtwerk periode omdat Oom Buks gedink het hy sal die skuldige so uitge-snuffel kry, het ons werk gruwelik agter geraak. Om in te haal moes ons na skool toe aan ons modelle werk en gedurende klastyd moes ons teorie doen en ons tekene inhaal. Dit het Tert se bas gered – en ons s'n ook.

Die kassies waarin die laai moes pas was al klaar en op die raamwerk gemonteer. Ons was nou besig met die laaie met sy blinde swaelstert voeë. En dis op hierdie punt waar

Tert het ook besef dat geen mens instaat is om 'n laai net so skeef soos die kas waarin dit moet pas kan maak nie. Daar moes 'n ander uitweg wees, het hy gedink. Die betrokke dag na skool was ons weer besig en Tert moes sy laai aanmekaar kry. Oom Buks was nog nie behoorlik in sy kar nie, toe pluk Tert twee bladsye van 'n oefeningboek uit. Ons ander staan en kyk wat hy gaan doen, want ons kry nie ons laaie gepas nie. Ons skaaf dan hierdie kant en dan daardie kant maar ons kry nie haaks en amper haaks bymekaar uit nie.

Tert het die saak beredeneer en tot die slotsom gekom dat hy iewers sal moet inboet. As hy die laai gaan lym smeer en klamp sou hy punte kry vir sy voeë, want dit was nogal heel skaflik, maar dan sou die laai nie pas nie. Sou hy egter die voeë lym smeer en in die kas indruk sodat die laai net so skeef is soos die kas, sou hy punte verloor op die voeë maar die laai sou pas. En dit was meer punte werd as die voeë.

Probleem was; hoe pas hy die laai in die kas sonder dat die lym aan die kas se kante vassit en nooit weer daar gaan loskom nie. Dis waar die twee foliovelle inpas, want Tert skeur die foliovelle elkeen in helftes, smeer die voeë lym, plaas die papier netjies op die nat lym en stoot die laai versigtig in die kas in.

Ons staan die ding so en kyk en besef dis die oplossing vir ons probleem. Tert is na alles nie so dom in die houtwerkklas nie. Na 'n kwartier, toe die lym al redelik geset het, haal Tert die laai versigtig uit die kas en begin die oortollige lym en

die stukkies papier met skuurpapier versigtig wegskuur. Liggies stoot hy die laai weer in die kas in en triomfantlik kyk hy ons aan. Soos blits is ons op die fietse en jaag ons met die spoed van witlig na die nywerheidsgebied toe om nuwe hout te gaan koop. Dit saag en timmer vir die vale, maar toe ons laat die middag die klas se deur agter ons toetrek, toe pas ons laaie.

Tert was ons held.

Die volgende oggend trap Oom Buks vir Tert vas. “Bring hier daai laai van jou Oosthuizen! En jou tafel.” Tert was besig om die knop van die laai vas te sit. Selfvoldaan sit Tert sy tafel en die laai voor Oom Buks neer. Oom Buksie stoot die laai in en trek dit uit; in en weer uit.

Ons kon sien hy was totaal in die duister; want dit was die eerste keer in die geskiedenis vandat die mensdom met hout begin werk het dat iemand dit kon regkry om twee goed ewe skeef te maak sodat alles pas.

“Hierdie ding,” sê Oom Buks terwyl hy die laai instoot en uittrek, “het ek nog nooit vantevore gesien nie, Oosthuizen. Nog nooit nie! Jy weet natuurlik jou voeë is nou nie watwonders nie, nê!” “Maar die laai pas, Meneer. En dis al wat tel. Nê Meneer?” en Tert glimlag breed.

Oom Buksie is al baie jare gelede oorlede, maar sy nagedagtenis leef voort. Tert se telefoontafel staan in sy gang. Skewe laai of te nie. En elke keer as ek daardie tafeltjie sien dan sien ek weer vir Oom Buksie voor my met 'n duisend vrae op sy gesig.
