What child doesn’t want to grow up to be a superhero?

While they may not have X-ray vision, strength of steel or be able to fly, we can equip them with a super skill set to excel in their careers and in their lives. At Junior Achievement of Central Maryland, we are proud to be serving these young people and helping them soar.

More than ever, we are hearing from our stakeholders that JA works. In this year’s annual report, you’ll see many examples of this statement in action. They illustrate the ways our programs work for Central Maryland students, educators, community partners, volunteers and the economy.

Despite ongoing challenges with unemployment, there are nearly four million U.S. jobs waiting for qualified applicants. Junior Achievement works strategically with its partners to prepare young people for success in the workplace and in their personal lives. We do this by helping them connect the dots between what they learn in school and how to apply it after graduation. Whether it is showing students how to successfully apply for a job, manage their money, or start and grow a business that creates jobs and drives innovation, JA is there, thanks to our more than 3,500 businesses and community volunteers.

COUNTY

As our nation focuses its attention on ways to create jobs and spur economic growth, the case for JA has never been stronger. The landscape in which we operate, bridging young peoples’ experiences between education and the world of work, has highlighted the need for our programs.

As part of our strategic focus to help educators prepare young people to be career and college ready, we expanded our middle and high school reach. As a result of these and other initiatives, we increased the overall number of students participating in JA programs by 15 percent, to more than 38,000 during the 2012-2013 school year.

Increasingly, educators are incorporating blended and distance learning into curricula, and JA is staying relevant in this area by adapting to the new ways in which students learn and share information. One example is JA Company Program®, where Junior Achievement is forging a new, innovative path for our legacy student experience, thanks to the support of our partners. A new pipeline of volunteers is being created via strategic partnerships with funders and other partners to expand students’ access to JA programs.

JA works for Central Maryland by driving positive, transformative change for young people—by helping them become superheroes in the 21st century global economy. We look forward to working with you as we continue to empower the future.

Designed for grades 8-12, JA Job Shadow includes economic and business classroom curricula culminating in a one-day capstone visit that offers students an authentic workplace experience. By exposing young people to the education and skills required to pursue different careers, the program helps prepare students for college and, in turn, close the skills gap that exists in many high-demand professions, particularly in science, technology, engineering and math (STEM).

Bechtel Corporation, an engineering and construction firm in Frederick, was one of the JA partners that hosted JA Job Shadow last year. Approximately 200 total participants over four days visited Bechtel from St. John Regional Catholic School in Frederick County, New Town High School in Baltimore County and Benjamin Franklin High School in Baltimore City. Activities included interactive presentations from a variety of departments, a job fair, careeroriented games and activities, and a networking lunch with Bechtel professionals.

“Many of the students wrote us thank you notes after this program.

I was amazed to hear how many students said they wanted to be engineers after hearing us give presentations about the company and various sources of power,” said Jamey Kalish, Bechtel Construction Coordinator. “That’s when I know our efforts are paying off, and that’s what inspires me to continue working with these students.”

As part of the event, Bechtel also sponsored the “JA Build a Better World Essay Contest,” which encouraged students to communicate lessons learned from the JA Job Shadow and apply them to their future goals. The three 8th grade winners—Colleen Morgan, Alexis Passaro and Molly O’Neel from St. John’s Regional Catholic School—each received a Kindle E-Reader, as well as a $2,000 grant for their school to be used for technology in the classroom. After the awards ceremony, the girls shared that, through the JA Job Shadow experience, they were now interested in pursuing engineering careers.

Bechtel took their mentoring to the next level by bringing volunteers into the classroom at three Frederick County middle schools to lead the JA Economics for Success program. This fall, they also taught JA Career Success in six Frederick County high schools.

“Bechtel volunteers have been impressed at the level of engagement the students have shown,” said Lee Lushbaugh, Senior Vice President and Execution Unit Manager for Bechtel’s Power Global Business Unit. “During the various volunteer efforts throughout the year, they asked tough questions and showed a natural curiosity in STEM subjects. The more we can do to get students excited about STEM careers, the better chance we have of successfully bringing along the next generation of engineers.”

In the real world, life rarely “goes by the book.”

We all need finely honed critical-thinking and decision-making skills to survive and thrive in our ever-changing economy.

That’s why new educational standards, called the Common Core State Standards (CCSS), are being introduced in K-12 classrooms in 45 states across the country. This set of consistent, high-quality academic goals in English/language arts and mathematics is being implemented in all Maryland public schools beginning in the current 2013-14 school year. The goal of the CCSS is to ensure college and workforce readiness for all students.

The CCSS focus on development of 21st century skills—problem solving, collaboration, critical thinking, and creativity—that are vital to success in college and today’s workplace. They also allow students to apply their learning to real-world situations that simulate the type of work they may do in the future. What’s more, the CCSS reflect the knowledge and skills most valued by employers and higher education.

A long-time leader in experiential learning, Junior Achievement offers programs that directly support the goals of the CCSS at elementary, middle, and high school levels. JA Finance Park Virtual® is a case in point. Reaching 8,300 Maryland middle-school students in the 2012-2013 school year, the program includes in-school, teacher-led activities culminating in an online simulation in which students assume a “life situation” that literally walks them through real-world decisions on budgeting, saving and spending.

“The JA Finance Park Virtual program is a valuable asset. Students are able to problem solve and participate in the ‘real’ experience of handling finances. They enthusiastically take on a career and see what it is like to work for a paycheck, get a car, produce and maintain a budget, buy or rent a home, invest, and find out how to live day to day,” explains Michelle M. Jones, Director of Program Evaluation and Planning for the Archdiocese of Baltimore Department of Catholic Schools. “When implementing the program, we are able to use the materials and structure the lessons so students can learn at their own pace. We support them by teaching lessons for living, as they grow to become productive, contributing citizens in their communities.

Through JA Finance Park Virutal, we are able to provide students with more skills for 21st century learning.”

JA Finance Park Virtual is directly aligned to Maryland’s Common Core standards. Educators have told us it is an easy and effective plugin to their curriculum.

“The quality of the programs directly connects to and enhances our essential curriculum. During times when teachers are asked to do more and more with less, we must carefully evaluate all the new programs we bring into the schools,” says Kristine H. Pearl, Supervisor for Career and Technology Education at Frederick County Public Schools, which began implementing JA Finance Park Virtual in 6th grade classes this year. “Teachers not only embraced the program, they immediately asked to expand the use for their 7th and 8th grades as well. This is a testament to the quality of the product, as well as the teacher-friendly materials and training.”

JA also backs up its programs with evaluation tools that measure student knowledge gains, as well as attitudinal and behavioral change.

This type of outcomes assessment further demonstrates the program’s value to both the students and educators we serve.

“The type support we receive from JA is one of the main reasons we continue to use the product. They are responsive to our needs, and we see response both locally and nationally and in terms of services— whether it is a content, logistics, or technical issue,” says Laurie Collins, Instructional Facilitator for Family and Consumer Sciences and Career Research and Development at Howard County Public Schools. “One of the nicest features is that I can ask for and get data delivered to me in terms of student learning—and it’s delivered to me in any way I want it—with the structure and focus that will allow me to demonstrate that students are making progress.”

And progress is what the Common Core standards are all about.

Through our many partnerships with systems and schools throughout Maryland, JA is joining in the charge to help students succeed— whatever the future holds.

This past year alone, the company sponsored our first-ever JA Jams concert, participated in the bowl-a-thon, volunteered in elementary school classrooms, and hosted a JA Job Shadow™. Through these efforts, Stanley Black & Decker has demonstrated its commitment to giving back to the community in which its associates live and work.

These opportunities helped these young people get a preview of the skills needed to handle the realities and opportunities that exist in today’s workplace.

“I was really impressed with JA’s leadership and organization of the job shadow event, which included students from several local high schools. Stanley Black & Decker associates from across the CDIY organization were involved throughout the day—from HR to finance, and engineering to marketing,” says Stephen Subasic, Vice President of Human Resources for the CDIY Group. “Currently, the number of graduates in the United States in the STEM fields is not keeping up with the demand in the workforce. Our aim for the event was to address this need by exposing students to STEM careers and encouraging them to pursue careers in these areas. We hope the event reinforced the objectives of JA while directly impacting the critical business needs of this world-class organization, both today and in the future.”

Warren’s service to JA began two years ago. In that time alone, he already has mentored dozens of students as a three-time volunteer in both JA BizTown® and JA in a Day. He especially enjoys working with kids in Baltimore City and giving them an expanded idea of what’s possible for their futures.

“One thing I really enjoy about JA BizTown is that you have the opportunity to mentor—to allow kids to function as if they were young adults, but also to provide support. By the end of the day, they all understand at some level how a business runs,” he explains. “In JA in a Day, you’re helping students understand concepts that may not be brought up at home. It’s a great opportunity to interact with the kid and show them how financial concepts relate to communities, counties, states and the global economy. Students realize that society is much bigger than me, my house, my block and my corner.”

Sometimes it’s hard for volunteers to see the immediate impact of their efforts, but Warren’s mentorship took on new meaning when he received a thank you note (excerpted on this page) from one of his 5th grade JA in a Day students. “The letter gave value and purpose to the volunteer day, especially giving time to those less fortunate than myself, my family, and my socioeconomic class,” he says. “I believe that success comes from what you do personally, but also what you help others do. Junior Achievement is doing excellent things in Maryland communities. The sheer notion of this student thinking in terms of attending college is extremely rewarding and a testament that we all can make a difference. Life is so much bigger than what we do every day in our lives. Our youth is our future, and it is up to us to help them make a difference in this world.”

Thank you for coming to wonderful Windsor Hills. I hope you come back next year… I learned a lot of cool words that I had not heard before, like “demand.” I learned that we should be on time always, but especially on your first day in the workplace… Now that you’ve come, Mr. Warren, I really am going to think about my future and what kind of work I want to do. I want to be a mathematician because that’s me!

Among the audience of more than 1,800, perhaps the most special guests were the young people who participated in the evening’s festivities. JA students from New Town Elementary and Reservoir High greeted concertgoers and distributed programs. Talented vocalists from the Seton Keough A Cappella Choir provided pre- and post-concert entertainment. And two courageous and talented students—Jason Gibert, a freshman at Morgan State University, and Madeline McGee, a fifth grader at Severna Park Elementary—stole the show when they turned on the charm and introduced the band to the audience.

For the third year in a row, Fogo de Chão showcased the best of what the popular Brazilian Steakhouse has to offer by hosting a benefit dinner for Junior Achievement of Central Maryland. Held this past April in celebration of Financial Literacy Month, the dinner was a sell-out event—serving 150 diners and raising more than $7,500 for our work readiness, financial education, and entrepreneurship programs.

Guests enjoyed a tantalizing dinner package that included a selection of 15 cuts of fire-roasted meats, gourmet salad and sides bar, beverages and dessert—all at the reduced rate of only $50 per person. Fogo de Chão generously donated 100 percent of the proceeds to JA.
