JIE ENGINEER’S WEEK 2014 The JIE Engineers Week was observed during the week of September 21 – 28, 2014. The week of activities was officially launched on September 4, 2014 at the University of Technology. The week’s activities included a church service at the Holy Rosary Catholic Church, a three-day conference at the Knutsford Court Hotel, a site tour to the Maggotty Hydro Power Plant and culminated with the Race for Hope at the Hope Botanical Gardens. Launch Ceremony The Engineers’ Week Launch Ceremony was held on September 4, 2014 at the University of Technology, Faculty of Engineering and Computing Conference Room. The week’s activities were launched by the Minister without Portfolio in the Ministry of Transport Housing and Works, the Honourable Dr. Morais Guy, who deputized for Minister Dr. Omar Davies who was unable to attend the launch. Also in attendance were the acting University of Technology President, Ambassador Burchell Whiteman; Dr. Felix Akinladejo of the University of Technology, Faculty of Engineering and Computing; Past Presidents J.P. Morgan and Desmond Young; sponsor representatives from the main sponsors, Jamaica National Building Society; and platinum sponsors, Caribbean Cement Company. Representatives from gold sponsors, Cemex Jamaica and Isratech Waterworks were also in attendance along with members of the JIE and others.

Jamaica Institution of Engineers’ commitment to play their part in being an agent of change to help Jamaica overcome the challenges being faced and grow the economy. Dr. Brown’s remarks were followed by the address by Dr. Guy, who launched the week of activities while observing the contribution the engineering organizations has made to the development of codes and standards locally. He also highlighted the contribution the profession will make to the development of the Logistics Hub Initiative and the Island’s Vision 2030 plan. Church Service The JIE Engineers’ Week commenced with a church service at the Holy Rosary Catholic Church on Gibbs Avenue in east Kingston on Sunday, September 21, 2014. The JIE was well received by the congregation and the service included participation by two of the JIE Council members who read lessons during the service.

The JIE provided a number of back-to-school items for the children and engaged in fellowship with congregation by providing refreshments after the service.
