Objective The design aims to create a well established and a well developed hub for social interaction, community exchange, and supporting different users, all with a well contained space that host it. that will create an interconnection enviornment that also help in supporting a healthy life style.

Case Study The Highline NY

The designers manage to transform the abandoned structure of the old railways into a very vivacious public park which overlaps with the city without disturbing it in a way to re-value the already existing.

The railways were built in 30’s and hey were being used until the 80’s. It was abandoned for almost 25 years until the re-treatment project began, during this period time one part of the tracks were cut away.

The Highline project is designed by the architecture firm Diller Scofidio + Renfro which is an inter-disciplinary design office and we can see the effects of the uniting approach for the landscape, functions and building materials in this project.

The aim of the project was reclaiming the abandoned railway structure in an attempt to revitalize the neighborhood and create a public park.

The project was completed in 3 sections between the years 2009 and 2015. The final part of the promenade is finished last year.

Site Analysis Background Alshoqiyah pedestrian walkway (or um almomeneen alsaidah Zainab alhilaliah pedestrian walkway) is a project in Makkah proposed by Makkah’s Municipality, the project is not constructed yet, but it was meant to have the following areas 1. Walking track 2. Playgrounds areas (football and volleyball) 3. Sport machines 4. Interactive fountains 5. Kids playgrounds 6. High raised and low raised sitting areas 7. Amphitheater 8. WC’S 9. Status.

Rammed Earth Rammed earth can be utilized for different factors to use it as a main structural material for the walkaway as an alternative for concrete slabs that can create a heat island in reaction to the environment of the project location.

Installing channel drain

1. Clear the area of tarmac, paving or bricks. Once you have planned out the route of your channel drain you will need to remove the hard surface to accomodate for the trench.

2. Dig the trench Dig a trench which is large enough in height to accommodate a 50mm compacted sand base at the bottom, and is wide enough so that 100mm of concrete side fill on each side can surround the channel. As you dig the trench you need to allow for a fall of around 5mm per every 1m length of channel drain.

Most domestic channels do not have a built-in fall or slope, so this needs to be accommodated for manually in the trench preparation. Fixing a length of string along the trench to mark the height of where the grating should finish (roughly 2mm below the final surface level) can help you by acting as a guide.

3. Lay the drain Start installing the channel at the lowest point to ensure that if you need to cut any lengths, they’re at the furthest point form the outlet. connect the lengths as you go along, they will slot into the next one at the end. When you get to the end, the last length can be cut to fit the space needed. Once finished, install an end cap at the highest point and seal the joints with a silicone sealant to ensure the system has longevity and connect the lowest point of the drain to an underground drainage pipe.

4. Place the grate Place the grating onto the channel making sure it is securley attached and cover the grating with tape or something similar.

Pour concrete into the trench, finishing 2mm above the surface of the grate. Once finished you need to wait at least 72 hours for the channel to cure and set in place before vehicles can drive over or the grates can be removed.
