INTRODUCTION Design portfolio introduction

Liveable Urbanism Unit 5 propose to create a system in Kochi that unifies and create a hole coherent system. The area of Fort Kochi is considered one of the most historical areas in India.

The tourism resembles in ancient history building such as temples and national housing. The port infrastructure has created a new emerging tourism whom focal point is in trace and commerce leading to commercial activities such as cruise tourism and yachting. This has created an interest in the creation of Kochi biennale that have impulse Kochi in becoming one of the top leisure destinations in the past 2020.

Kochi characterizes because of an increasing in HDI and social indicators, citizen engagement and service industry having as a result the leverage the social base to expand employment generation.

However, tourism is having a huge impact on Kochi´s culture and inhabitants. The empowerment of tourism has caused a great and preoccupying increase in resorts, restaurants and tourism infrastructures.

These services come from foreign companies that settle in Kochi having a better quality and richer services than local inhabitants are offering. As a result, a high increase in unemployment of about 20% in the last year.

Proposals include creating a liveable city unifying the increasing tourism of Fort Kochi with the local inhabitants potentiating a common space between both.

Tourism and local economy are two concepts that are separated one from each other in Fort Kochi.

Tourism is leaded by multimillonaire companies that cotrol this sector. This foreign companies are takiong Kochi citizens economy increasing the unemployment and the poverty in the city.

As a result, this catalyst project pretend to unify both concepts creating some intervention in the Eraveli Canal that unifies both phisical parts of the city and that enrises and potentiates local economy. Tourism is a very important source of economy in Fort Kochi activities vary from visiting the chinese fishing nets, churches and cathedrals, cultural cafes, museums...

The intervention proposed will help to understand Indian culture along with the food, traditions and understanding the city from a local point of view and living their life during a short period of time.

This, along with cleaning the canal, and the city will help to enrise local economy as well as creating en environmental intention on local citizens. This will be aquired with some systems and cleaning methods in wich having the city clean will directly depend on their economy.

Services in Kochi are very important for the increase and develop of tourism. The more configured servicies the city has, the more tourists will come. This map shows the land uses in two of the more developed areas in Kochi, Mattanchery and Fort Kochi.

The city of Kochi is considered a cibercuty, based on Technology information. This helps in the development and the ability of founding startups companies, which has increased the number of new companies coming from developed countries.

LOCAL ECONOMY RATES Employment rate and interpretation of the data.

The data shown in the graphic show de decrease in the economy rates during the past 30 years.

With the increase in the tourist attractions of Fort Kochi there is an unemployment rate of the 30 %.

This is due to an increase in the number of companies that establish their buisness in Fort Kochi castal areas. They hire their own workers and as a result, there is a drop in the local economy.

Fort Kochi live of the economy obtain from the tourism. Foreign companies are getting benefit of it, and, as a result, there is an increase in the unemployment rate.

We can observe in the charts located at the right of the page that most of the employments are dedicated to the fishing and toutrist industry that has a direct relation with the economy comming from tourits.

The graph at the left part of the page show a drop in the number of new employees. The local companies do not have the money enough to hire new employees.

The concepts that are being interpreted as employment and uneployment are being explained in the diagram located in the bottom of the page.

As a summary paid employees work for a sallary or for a familly income that can vary from cash or gain such as food, or trade exchange. The latter is the most commonly used in this region of India.

The work for the common living facilities is a scarce commodity that not all familly have the previligy to have and is a necesary source establish in the UDHR (Universal Declaration od the Human Right) by the UN (United Nations).

LOCAL KOCHI IDENTITY

Local Fort Kochi history

Initially found by Portuguese the city of Kochi started at fort Kochi as a colony. Since the 16th century the area has been divided into colonial and native residential area with a canal in between acting as a divider. Through time and different nations taking over the colony enhancing further expansion canal was the only feature that remained the same. For several centuries cultural and social separation was dictated by the natural landscape. This separation is still present nowadays even though it is not as clear due to developed social interaction between residential and tourist attraction area.

Along with this history also came the idea of unity and diversity you know, the idea of living together in harmony, with all these differences that all these people bought in, which actually can be defined as a city of cultural pluralism.” Biley Menon This mosaic of cultures is responsible for forging the character and vibrancy of the city, for which is has become an attraction for thousands of tourists. However, the tourism industry, just like any other, is driven by profit. Seen as a great attractor for tourists, investments are made in the commercial areas, beautifying the surroundings and improving the infrastructure.

However, the residential areas are not addressed and living conditions there are deteriorating.

The historical area of Fort Kochi is slowly pushing away its local inhabitants. Families that lived there for generations are moving out, buildings of cultural and historic significance are left to rot, and the colonial past of the area is being romanticised, to make it more attractive to foreign tourists.

This points represent the different interventions proposed along the Eravely canal. Among them, some include warehouse, labs, workshop, houses, canal cleanning, trash points that mantain the city clean from waste, cultural points.

The intention of this interventions are connecting both highlighted areas in purrple, that now are being physicaly separeted due to the increase of the foreign companies.

The project I intend to carry proposes mixing local culture with tourism as mentioned above. This includes the creation of meeting places with activities, sharing accommodation with local citizens having similar qualities to those of a hotel, eating their food and visiting the city from their point of view. The purpose of the project is to promote local economy and fair trade. Would you be interested in this new tourism?
