Relay for Life PreviewRelay for Life has always been my favorite event; it was where my first 24 hour event had been and where I sang my first karaoke. It was also my first time pulling an all-nighter, one that I actually enjoyed. For those who don’t know what Relay for Life is, it is an event held by the American Cancer Society that not only spreads awareness of cancer, but also fundraises for cancer research, its survivors, and its patients. Probably the most famous event in Relay for life, a Luminaria Ceremony is held to remember those who have passed away from cancer. As we walk down the path with glow-sticks to remember and respect those who have passed away, one can truly feel how precious life is. Personally, my favorite part of Relay for Life was dressing the Ms. Relay for Lifes. As a tradition to fundraise more money, every team is allowed to pick out two guys to dress as girls. After giving them stuffing and much make up, we send the guys up on stage to dance around as ladies. According to how attractive and feminine they look, people will toss them coins and even bills. The funds are later all donated toward the cancer program. There are so many more events to participate in during these 24 hours. Amongst all the fundraising and volunteering, we had much personal time to roam around and meet people from other teams. It isn’t too late to register Key Clubbers! The Chino Hills Annual Relay for Life will be this Saturday! You wouldn’t want to miss out! -Joyce Xiong

Kiwanis 4th of July PicnicOn Thursday, July 4th, our members had the opportunity to volunteer at Chino Hills’ annual 4th of July picnic. What better way to celebrate America’s birthday than showing the true American spirit of kindness. Our Kiwanis sponsor, the Kiwanis Club of Chino Hills, had invited our club to this event, so we were of course, ecstatic. Myself and my fellow Chino Hills High members were at the Big League Dreams sports complex early in the morning at around 8:30 to help set-up the Kiwanis booth. The actual event did not start until 10am, but we had to ensure that everything was perfect. The cardboard airplanes that were to be given away for free seemed so simple to make, but were in truth, pretty tricky. In the end, we managed to make enough. At 10am, the event officially started, and we could definitely feel the intensity. Many families wandered around the complex, enjoying themselves and celebrating the wonderful day. There is this always this indescribable feeling that you get when you make a child smile. Personally, I felt this feeling many times throughout the event. On one occasion, around 11am, there was a family of four walking around near our booth. This young boy was looking around, when all of a sudden; he spots the Kiwanis booth, and the sign that read, “Free Toys.” You could see the excitement on his face as he urged his family to follow him to the booth. The joy on his face when he took that inflatable balloon could make anyone feel great. That was just one instance; just imagine what the rest of the day was like. Many children and even some adults were interested in our American History Trivia game. The goal of the game was to try and answer three questions right. If the person answered all three correctly, they would win a free book of their choice. This collection of books was generously donated by the Chino Hills Kiwanis President, Mr. Bill Taylor. The questions varied, depending on age or grade level. I was surprised by how quickly the books were being won. Eventually, the difficulty of the questions went from, “How many states are there?” to “Which three presidents died on July 4th?” Still, some people were still able to get all three correct, so that was awesome to see. Our Key Clubbers were having a great time interacting with our Kiwanis. Throughout the day, they gave us a few pointers, which were very helpful, and also gave us a couple of suggestions for service events which we could do together in the future. As the event came to its scheduled ending, 2pm, the festivity certainly did not end until the last minute. Our Key Club was able to showcase our love for service on a day that is all about celebrating kindness and it was certainly something special to be apart of.

CHHS July Newsletter-Page 6 Summer Concerts-in-the-Park“ICE CREAM AND WATER FOR SALE!” Come out and join us at Concerts of the Park Key Clubbers! Every Wednesday from 5:45 to 8:30PM, we join Ayala Key Club and our Kiwanis Family at Crossroads Park to sell ice cream and water. It’s one of the best ways to relax from summer work and volunteer while listening to music in the park. At 5:45 while people get their blankets and chairs ready to enjoy the rest of their Wednesday, KeyClubbers buzz around setting up the easy up and ice cream table. Once the clock strikes 6, music is on and so is our business. As parents with their kids and dogs walk up and down our booth, we persuade them to buy ice cream using all kinds of ways. Unfortunately, the snow cone booth is located right next to our stand. It’s more than sad to see our customers stray away from our booth and chose to buy snow cones instead. Despite our competition with the snow cone booth, Concerts of the Park is a relaxing event that provides much learning experience. It will definitely help you earn some good advertising tips and cashier responsibility as you manage money. Most importantly, it’s the perfect opportunity to support our Sponsoring Kiwanis Club. So Key Clubbers, come out and have some fun! Join us every Wednesday at Concerts of the Park and enjoy the summer through volunteering! -Joyce Xiong

CHHS July Newsletter-Page 7 Region 13 PicnicD-15, NUMBER 1 IS WHAT WE STRIVE! That was the type of intensity that revolved around Butterfield Park on July 13th. This region picnic was from 10am-4pm and included divisions 15, 35 West, 35 East, 10 North, and 10 South. The point of this picnic was not only to bond closer as a Region, but it was partly a canned-food drive as well as a fundraiser. Individual clubs were able to sell food, spirit wear, and other items, to raise money for the Pediatric Trauma Program (PTP). During the first part of the picnic, divisions were able to grow closer together in bonding icebreakers. The tension started to rise when the announcement of the spirit battle was made. Giraffes, as determined and spirited as we were, began to practice our spirit cheers. Credit to our Main Spirit Task Coordinators for coming up with this creative cheers. When the spirit battle started, there was desire to win the spirit stick. Our division cheered loud and proud, eventually getting us to the final against Division 35 East. We came out victorious in the spirit battle and claimed the spirit stick. This unofficially made Division 15 the best division in the Cali-Nev-Ha District, because we proved to be the best Division in the best Region in the District. This day was filled with service and spirit in many ways, but the highlight of this wonderful day was our rightful claiming of the Region 13 spirit stick.

CHHS July Newsletter-Page 8 July Ford Car-WashOn July 20th, our Key Club held a fundraising car-wash at the Chino Hills Ford. This carwash was organized to raise money for the “Relay for Life event. From 8am to around 2pm, we advertised along the sides of the roads. Some of our members and officers were really creative with this. For example, a couple of members and an officer did, in synchronization, a dance to get customers. Believe it or not, it actually worked. Business was slow at first, but people started to show. People would stand by our table, drinking our complementary Starbucks, while we wash their car. With everyone working, we finished each car pretty quickly. After a couple of customers, we were paid a visit by an old friend, Kevin Chou. He was there to get his car washed, but ended up helping us out. We were even visited by our LTG, Amy He, who showed her support for our car-wash. At one point during the event, we were extremely busy. We had three cars lined up, waiting to be washed. It was very hectic, but we managed to get all three done within a reasonable amount of time. One of those cars belonged to Bill Taylor, the Chino Hills Kiwanis Club president, so we made sure that we were worked quickly, but efficiently. At the end of the day, we ended up making about 201 dollars, so it was successful event filled with passion and fulfillment.
