The Pillow is an awe-inspiring place to experience the wide world of movement— whether enjoying performances on our three unique stages, watching the latest dance film in the Archives, or peeking in on stunning artists in rehearsal. Each season we present exceptional dance from around the globe. During Festival 2016 you can discover companies and artists from Argentina, Algeria, Korea, Germany, France, and all across the U.S. There’s flamenco, tap, ballet, contemporary, hip-hop, and beyond. ASPEN SANTA FE BALLET Ted Shawn Theatre

Craig Black and Emily Proctor of Aspen Santa Fe Ballet; photo Rosalie O’Connor

This vibrant, versatile contemporary ballet company is a Pillow audience favorite. To quote The Boston Globe, “The dancers of Aspen Santa Fe Ballet seem as comfortable in acrobatic turns and loose limbed falls as they are in soaring grand jetés and crisp fouettés.” They open the season with an East Coast premiere by renowned Spanish choreographer Cayetano Soto, Alejandro Cerrudo’s poetic Silent Ghost, and other ballets.

JUAN SIDDI FLAMENCO SANTA FE

Juan Siddi Flamenco’s sensational performances immerse audiences in

an extraordinary world of song and dance. Rigorous choreography captures flamenco’s rich cultural heritage while virtuosic musicians and vocalists, 5

many hailing from Spain, heighten the dramatic power of this electrifying ensemble.

CHE MALAMBO

Che Malambo; photo Em Watson

Ted Shawn Theatre ARGENTINA | LIVE MUSIC

Fast-paced footwork, explosive drumming, whirling lasso boleadoras—this thrilling spectacle of dance and music celebrates the unique traditions of the South American cowboy. Danced solely by men, the traditional Malambo began in the 17th century as a competitive duel that challenged agility, strength, and speed. Today, Che Malambo performs the dance style reimagined in an exhilarating, entertaining performance by an all-male company of 14 Argentinean gauchos.

BEREISHIT DANCE COMPANY

Doris Duke Theatre KOREA | LIVE MUSIC

From Seoul, this Pillow debut merges the control

and excitement of break dance with sleek artistry and urban cool. The rigorous male duet BOW is inspired by the tradition of archery and explores the boundaries of sports and dance. The intensely physical Balance and Imbalance features brilliant and fun interplay between a cast of contemporary dancers and an ensemble of Korean traditional drummers.

BALLETX

ZVIDANCE Doris Duke Theatre

Israeli-born Artistic Director Zvi Gotheiner is known for his passionate vision and versatile dances. His company performs Escher/Bacon/ Rothko, danced in three distinct sections inspired by the artwork of M.C. Escher, Francis Bacon, and Mark Rothko. The

stirring choreography pulsates with each artist’s startling perspective, adding new layers to the work of these visual art icons. 9

Contemporary ballet choreographer Matthew Neenan and composer Rosie Langabeer’s Sunset, o639 Hours interprets the dramatic, true story of pilot Edwin Musick’s 1938 inaugural airmail flight across the Pacific. Audiences are transported by the rich sights and sounds of pre-World War II New Zealand, Samoa, and Hawaii through this beautiful and intensely personal narrative of loss, longing, and paradise.

WENDY WHELAN AND BRIAN BROOKS WITH BROOKLYN RIDER

Wendy Whelan & Brian Brooks; photo Christopher Duggan

Ted Shawn Theatre | LIVE MUSIC Choreographer Brian Brooks is beloved for his “kinetic thrill and visual power” (The Washington Post), while former New York City Ballet star Wendy Whelan is “riveting, interesting, unusual, intelligent” (The New York Times). Following a winning collaboration in Restless Creature, they return with

new solos and duets, full of elegance and electricity, along with the remarkable musical stylings of Brooklyn Rider.

ARIAS COMPANY

Bryan Arias; photo João Canziani

Doris Duke Theatre Lauded as “an expressive young powerhouse dancer” (The New York Times), Bryan Arias is a veteran of high-profile companies including Crystal Pite’s Kidd Pivot and Nederlands Dans Theater. Now with his own ensemble, he premieres a rather lovely thing, a contemporary work that challenges notions of identity, bias, and stereotype, danced to music ranging from Chopin to Nico Muhly and Max Richter.

In their Pillow debut, this company of 12 outstanding men from Algeria and Burkina Faso deliver a jaw-dropping performance in What the Day Owes to the Night, packed with backflips, head spins, and a transcending emotional intensity. The Washington Post calls it “a stunning fusion of acrobatics, gymnastics, b-boying, modern dance, and ballet.”

NEW YORK THEATRE BALLET This intriguing chamber ballet company presents a range of works including Antony Tudor’s masterpiece Dark Elegies, an eloquent, somber ballet danced to Gustav Mahler’s song cycle “Kindertotenlieder”. Contemporary choreographer Pam Tanowitz’s Short Memory brings color and wit, and Richard Alston’s Such Longing is passionate and sweeping— both will be danced to live piano accompaniment.

Flex is an electrifying street dance, characterized by gliding, hat tricks, ‘bone breaking’, animation, and contortion, that has evolved from the Jamaican bruk-up style made popular in Brooklyn reggae clubs. This contemporary evening features the eccentric, striking Heaven on One’s Head, and the story progresses as if in a dream of glittering surfaces, described as a love letter to romantic ballets. FLUX Quartet performs live for both dances, alongside a commissioned electronic score by Dan Siegler. The New York Times raves “Ms. Tanowitz is the wittiest choreographer since Mark Morris.”
