Al’s Pizza

Al spent years perfecting his pizza since immigrating to America in 1978, opening his first pizzeria in Jacksonville in 1988. Today, he stays committed to using fresh ingredients and still handmakes pizza dough every day. While fresh ingredients and New York traditions are the cornerstone of Al’s, newcomers are often drawn in by the restaurant’s sleek look and contemporary appeal. Whether feasting with the family, picking up a slice for yourself or having one of our expert delivery drivers bring their restaurant fare to your living room, Al’s Pizza is there for you. Diners enjoy a classic slice, customized with whatever toppings their heart desires. They also offer subs, salads, and entrées like lasagna and chicken parmigiana. For dessert, make sure to try the zeppolis, a New York street fare favorite of lightly fried dough coated in powdered sugar with a sweet raspberry dipping sauce.

Eleven South

Fine Dining Restaurant

Tucked on a quiet side street in Jacksonville Beach, this gem is a go-to for fine dining at the Beaches. The setting is nearly perfect for one-on-one meals (we love the secluded patio for alfresco dinners on comfortable evenings) but it’s really the food that keeps locals and visitors coming back for over 20 years. Start with a sampling of grilled Spanish octopus ($16), dive into tuna tartare with crispy wontons ($16), and finish with the local flounder, served atop warm orzo, sweet corn, sun dried tomato, edamame and Vidalia onions, sauteed kale, bell pepper-saffron jam and basil pesto. ($31). Oenophiles will appreciate the attention to detail—all servers are well-versed on wine pairings and selections run the gamut starting at $38 a bottle to a wide selection of $1,000 per bottle and up. Socialites will appreciate the lively bar. Perfect for date night, cocktails at the bar and apps on the patio.

TacoLu

Grab a margarita at the bar while you wait to be seated (trust us there will be a wait) and indulge in some of the tastiest, freshest Mexican food in town. Expect perfectly battered fish tacos, excellent guacamole and bowls of street corn, which probably shouldn’t be missed. Most of the tacos are between $3 and $4, though those with expensive taste can go for the filet mignon-stuffed “Ten Dollar Taco,” a splurge at $5. Brunch on Saturdays and Sundays is full of all the classics—huevos rancheros, chorizo, and eggs—but it’s the Don Patrol ($10) that’s worth braving the crowds for. The quesadillalike creation includes black beans, potatoes, chorizo, cheese and eggs. Perfect for groups and families.

Baja Mexicana

Feature Dishes

The $10 Taco

Filet Mignon, two cheeses, lettuce and pico de gallo on a flour tortilla. This taco SHOULD be $10, but it’s not.

The Carne Royale

An incredible version of carne asada with brie and grape salsa. Rich cheese with sweet and spicy salsa is a match made in heaven.

Banging Shrimp

Spicy, Asian-style fried shrimp served on cabbage with chipotle crema and a sprinkle of scallions.

Baja Fish Taco

“Straight from the streets of Ensenada.”

Beer-battered white fish, lightly fried, served on a corn tortilla with cabbage, pico de gallo & chipotle crema.

OAXACA CLUB

Farm to Table Your Table, In Fact

Farmers markets are fairly common in Florida metro areas today, as the “buy local” movement encourages consumers to seek out fresh and seasonal produce. Northeast Florida is home to more than a dozen such markets featuring fruits and veggies, baked goods, live plants, fresh seafood, handmade crafts and more. Here are just a few of our favorites.

Eartha’s Farm & Market

Saturday, 10 AM-2 PM | 4850 Moncrief Rd., Northwest Jax

This urban farm and market is an initiative of the Clara White Mission, a local nonprofit group with deep roots in Jax. In addition to the range of vegetables and fruit grown on-site, Eartha’s also invites other area growers to participate in its weekly markets. Plus, vendors sell a variety of other products such as honey, plants, baked goods, books and more. And the site plays host to events like yoga sessions and wellness retreats. The nearly

11-acre property was established more than ten years ago and is dedicated to increasing food access, improving health outcomes and engaging the local community in urban agriculture.

Beaches Green Market

Saturday, 10 AM-2 PM | Penman Park, Jacksonville Beach

Vendors at this market, a member of the Farmers Market Coalition, sell an enormous selection of in-season, local, and organic produce, local all-natural meats, free-range eggs, cut flowers, locally roasted organic coffees… whew, plus edible plants and trees, orchids, teas, gluten-free and vegan foods, handcrafted cheeses and desserts, a variety of freshly baked bread, local honey and other seasonal delights.

Riverside Arts Market

Saturday, 10 AM-3 PM | Under the Fuller Warren Bridge, Riverside

This weekly shopper’s extravaganza draws thousands to the bright and airy space under a bridge that’s part of I-95, though you’d never know it because the waterside marketplace is so inviting. Among the regular vendors setting up tents and stalls here are Cross Creek Honey, Humble Nature Farm, Jaxma Orchids, Elkton Flower Farm and SunSoul Plants. There’s also breads and other delish eats provided by folks like 1748 Bakehouse, Olive My Pickle, Maddy D’s Sweets, Summa Salts and more. And did we mention the food trucks, arts and crafts vendors, vintage clothes sellers and pet accessories for sale?

Fernandina Beach Market Place

Saturday, 9 AM-1 PM | N. Seventh St., Amelia Island

Customers are invited to join family, neighbors and friends at this weekly event where farmers, growers, and entrepreneurial individuals sell locally grown and produced goods to those living on or visiting Florida’s most northern barrier island. The farmers’ market is open every Saturday year-round, rain or shine. Come hungry for fresh baked breads, jams, pickles, pastries, hot sauce, jerky, dips, flavored salts, wild-caught shrimp and more. Vendors also sell candles, soap and other specialty good. Live music, too.

Jacksonville Farmers Market

Daily, dawn to 5 PM | 1810 W. Beaver St., West Jacksonville

Only about a mile from the urban core, this open-air market is said to be the oldest continually running farmers market in Florida, established in 1938. Specializing in whole produce and open 365 days a year, the market is visited by home shoppers as well as restaurateurs, food truck operators and other culinary pros. Not everything sold here is grown locally, but the selection of produce is broad—watermelon, bananas, potatoes, pineapple, oranges, grapes, tomatoes, you name it and it’s likely sold here, usually at prices far below what grocery stores offer.

St. Augustine Amphitheatre Farmers Market

Saturday, 8:30 AM-12:30 PM | Anastasia Island, St. Augustine Beach

Oldest City shoppers gather under the oaks at the popular open-air music venue to peruse the handmade arts and craft, local produce and other tasty treats. Fitting the setting, live entertainment is usually presented during marketplace hours. This one’s a “green” market, so shoppers are asked to bring reusable bags and containers to take away their purchases. The Amphitheatre also hosts a series of Night Markets, held on select Tuesday evenings, 5-9 PM, throughout the year. Parking and admission are free.

Murray Hill Farmers Market

Wednesday, 5-8 PM | 3438 Mayflower St., Murray Hill

A tidy parking lot on Mayflower Street holds the majority of vendors participating in this weekly evening marketplace. Others will be set up in the backyard space at Fishweir Brewing Co., which makes their craft beer taps only a few steps away. Shoppers can expect a mix of vendors including Southern Acre Farm, Prema Bakes, Harmony Mushroom Co., Bee Grateful Apiaries, and Cartwheel Ranch Meats. Fresh eggs, micro greens, fresh flowers—one never knows what is blooming and ready to take away for a mid-week treat.  u

To MarkET, To MarkET!

Do you enjoy bringing home farm-fresh food from a local farmers market? If so, here are a few tips to remember before your next shopping excursion.

SHOP EARLY

The best selection is often early in the morning.

KNOW THE GROWING SEASON

Understanding seasonal availability will help you plan your shopping list. If you don’t see a specific fruit or vegetable you’re looking for, ask the farmer about its growing season.

RESPECT THE PRODUCE

Please don’t squeeze, strip, or manhandle the fruits and vegetables. Doing so will create bumps and bruises on the surface.

BRING YOUR OWN BAGS/BASKET

A reusable bag or basket is the perfect way to cart all your fruits and vegetables.

ASK QUESTIONS

Vendors love it when customers ask questions. Asking about the growing process or how to prepare something is a great way to get to know the farmer, too.

TRY SOMETHING NEW

Venture outside of your comfort zone and experiment with new flavors and tastes. Why not try a new variety of pepper or fruit?

MEAL PLAN

Before you leave for the market, have a game plan for the week. Plan out your meals so you know what to buy each day.
