Hello and welcome to the Spring 2020 edition of Accelerator. Well when we set out creating this latest issue, we cer tainly didn’t expect to be working from home rather than welcoming customers into our showrooms. The swift onset of the coronavirus and its devasting impact affects us all and we hope that you are star ting to become accustomed to the new lifestyle measures that we’re all having to adopt; and I hope that like me, you are comfor ted by the reassurance that our close knit, suppor tive island communities will get through this together. The recent announcements that have ordered us to stay at home may mean that that many of us have time on our hands. Perhaps you’ll put this to good use catching up on all those niggling DIY jobs around the house and garden, to pick up that book you’ve not had time to read, to learn a new skill or to ‘virtually’ keep in touch with friends and family. With this newfound spare time in mind we are pleased to present the latest issue of Accelerator which, in this edition, focuses on technology in the motoring industry. We look at what’s new from some of the iconic brands we represent and what’s coming in the future. Whilst buying a new car might not be at the forefront of your mind just now, hopefully you’ll find this an interesting read whilst you are staying in and staying safe. When at this unprecedented time we don’t know what the future holds for local businesses, nor indeed for the automotive industry as a whole, we wanted to embrace the great British ethos of ‘Keep Calm and Carry On’ as best we can.

Research shows that automotive is the second most data-driven industry in the world. Thanks to the growing Internet of Things (IoT) and mobile technology, car manufacturers have the ability to learn all about driver habits and create cars that predict and provide solutions to their every need.

Connectivity. Today’s drivers want unrestricted access to social media, music and apps while driving. They want to use these features in just the same way as they would in the office or at home. Whilst car-equipped WiFi is not new, as we move through this decade we’ll see it become standard.

Predictive Maintenance. Your vehicle will know when it needs an oil change before you

do! Put simply predictive maintenance technology, based on the use of IoT connectivity, collects data, transfers it to the cloud and evaluates any risks of potential malfunctions – then lets the driver know. Using remote access, manufacturers will also be able to provide technology updates, safety updates and recall information all without you needing to set foot in the garage. Over-theair updates mean you can make updates whenever you want and wherever you are. Service of vehicles has also become digitised too, owners no longer just rely on a great mechanic but also need a tech-savvy technician to maintain and update software.

Taking in personally. Thanks to AI and IoT, the driving experience has become personal!

Self-adjusting seats, mirrors, radio and air conditioning settings recognise each driver and alter accordingly. AI technology can even read your mood and aler t you when you seem to be getting sleepy or distracted.

Improved Car-Buying Experience. Whilst we at Jacksons pride ourselves on providing

a great customer experience, there is no doubt that advances in technology make this process easier. We have offered personalised videos of vehicles for customers for some time, but as we’ve all had to follow self-isolation protocols and increased measures of social distancing recently this feature has come into its own. Customers can browse our online showroom at www.jacksonsci. com, then drop us a message and a tailor made video covering all the main features of the vehicle can be delivered direct to their mobile, tablet or PC. Plus, augmented reality will soon allow buyers to get to know everything they need to about new models before even setting foot in the showroom. As in all industries digital transformation is having a huge impact, and we’re pleased that these changes are, in the most, positive ones which will bring huge improvements for drivers, making in-car time more comfortable, safe and fun!

50 Shades of Green

Alliance reported that over $30 trillion of funds were held in sustainable or green investments in 2018 and the number is expected to increase when they publish their 2019 figures.

Green investing is growing

Shannon Lancaster, fund analyst at Ravenscroft, looks at the options. Responsible, sustainable, green, ethical or impact - ESG (Environmental, Social and Governance) investing in its many forms has been around for a long time but recently momentum has been growing as shareholders demand more from the companies they invest in. This newly labelled breed of ‘positive’ investing is one of the most talked about and fastest growing parts of the investment industry in the past five years. The Global Sustainable Investment

Investing in this manner would have once been considered a niche approach that meant sacrificing returns but now these funds are proving that they can keep up with, and in some cases, outperform the market. Armed with the knowledge that investing sustainably does not mean missing out on performance, investors are then faced with the decision of how ‘green’ should they go. The vast array of options available and the lack of a standardised industry definition of ESG investing can make this a daunting task. There are funds that have integrated ESG factors into their processes, others that apply positive or negative screens, those that focus on fulfilling certain sustainability criteria (e.g. UN Sustainable Development Goals) or impact investments that

are made with the intention of generating positive measurable social and environmental impact. There are also specialist funds that focus on decarbonisation, smart materials, clean economies or water and waste. While there are plenty of funds available, both with impressive track records and newly launched products that aim to make a positive difference in the world, many have just rebranded or alternatively the ESG phrase has been tagged onto an existing investment process and not been fully integrated. The process of providing a false impression about how companies are more environmentally friendly, presenting misleading information, has been labelled ‘greenwashing’. So how do investors who genuinely want to access this powerful theme do so while avoiding being greenwashed? We believe it all comes down to one of Ravenscroft’s pillars of investing – know what you own and why you own it. When researching funds, ESG issues have been part of our risk management process since 2013; we essentially view ESG issues as a group of risks we expect our fund managers to be actively monitoring. When we introduced ‘Environmental Solutions’ as a theme for investment funds and invested in this space, we spent a long time researching the people, processes and portfolios behind the fund names. One of the funds we introduced is the Pictet Global Environmental Opportunities Fund which focuses on a broad range of global challenges such as resource efficiency, packaging issues, supply chain management and improving agriculture practices. The fund

differentiates itself by using the planetary boundaries framework in their investment process. This framework is a concept proposed by scientist Johan Rockstrom who explored the idea that the earth has limits, including the burden placed upon it by human activities. The planetary boundaries framework identifies nine key environmental areas e.g. freshwater use, climate change and biodiversity and it shows us the respective threshold which mankind must not cross to prevent irreversible environmental damage. The Pictet team uses this framework by identifying companies that work within the ‘safe operating space’ where human activities can take place. This fund has a track record going back to 2011 and produced over 34% in Sterling terms in 2019, so overall it is a very impressive offering in this space. As assets continue to pour into sustainable investments and a combination of regulation and cultural change help to make it the new norm, we expect ‘sustainable investing’ will soon just become investing as shareholders’ demands become the bare minimum expected from companies going forward. While we agree that green has been the new black over the past few years, the key for us is sticking to our knitting and continuing to know what we own and why we own it. As a result, we are able to access this meaningful theme using our thorough due diligence process which produces a portfolio of quality sustainable businesses that will continue into the future. For All Seasons As technologically advanced as it is durable and capable. The New Land Rover Defender introduces a completely new electrical heartbeat, a new intuitive infotainment system and wireless connectivity, ensuring drivers and passengers are always connected, informed and entertained. With over seven decades of pioneering innovation, Land Rover has always been at the forefront of all-terrain capability and adventure. The new Defender is fit for the 21st century, using the latest technologies to provide new levels of connectivity, capability and convenience. Land Rover’s next-generation Electronic Vehicle Architecture, dubbed EVA 2.0, underpins the digital revolution, supporting Software-Over-TheAir (SOTA) updates that ensure new Defender will get better with age and enabling Land Rover’s fast and intuitive new Pivi Pro infotainment system. Under the bonnet, a Mild Hybrid Electric Vehicle (MHEV) powertrain is available now, with a powerful and efficient Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicle (PHEV) capable of silent zero-emissions driving in EV-mode set to join the range, ensuring new Defender is equipped for today and engineered for tomorrow. “The new Defender is a future-proofed 4x4 for the 21st century, using the latest technologies to optimise efficiency, enhance capability and revolutionise connectivity. With plug-in hybrid electric powertrains, software updates that are sent over the air and next-generation always-on touchscreen infotainment, new Defender is every bit as pioneering today as the original Land Rover was in 1948.” Alex Heslop Director of Electrical Engineering, Jaguar Land Rover

Just as the Defender’s breadth of dynamic capability is underpinned by a new body architecture, its connected technologies are enabled by a new state-of-the-art scalable EVA 2.0, which supports the next generation of driver assistance and customer convenience systems. In total, 85 individual ECUs work in harmony to turn the new Defender into an all-terrain supercomputer capable of handling 21,000 network messages at any one time.

Software-Over-The-Air The future-proof 5G-ready network takes SOTA technology to the next level, ensuring new Defender is always operating on the latest software available. Up to 14 onboard electronic control modules, more than any previous Jaguar Land Rover vehicle, can receive updates, without the need to visit a Land Rover retailer. Even the most adventurous customers can use the technology – all that’s required is a data connection. In isolated locations a satellite-phone could download data for installation. Within the lifetime of the new Defender, the embedded diagnostics system will be able to alert customers to issues and either prevent or resolve them automatically as a data connection replaces a traditional toolkit. Customers will be able to stay truly connected with the Online Pack which will provide unlimited data for music streaming, weather updates and calendar information on the move.

Pivi Pro Infotainment Customer technology has also driven the development of Jaguar Land Rover’s fastest and most intuitive infotainment system, which makes its debut in the new Defender. The nextgeneration Pivi Pro software is inspired by the

Customers can even keep tabs on the new Defender from afar, using Land Rover’s Remote app technology, which allows owners to monitor its location, fuel level, lock and unlock the vehicle and even initiate the climate control to heat or cool the cabin before setting off.

latest smartphones and accessed through the central 10-inch touchscreen with an alwayson design that provides instant responses, even when starting the vehicle for the first time. Supported by a built-in back-up battery, navigation initialisation will take just seconds while an easy-to-follow menu structure ensures customers can carry out the most common tasks directly from the home screen, reducing driver distraction. The easily customised and redesigned layouts reduce the number of steps by an average of 50 per cent versus previous systems and incorporates wireless device charging and Apple CarPlay and Android Auto for intuitive smartphone integration. Its Bluetooth technology can even connect to two smartphones simultaneously. The new navigation system uses self-learning algorithms and dynamic guidance to optimise routing, while Smart Voice Guidance even knows to cancel audio instructions when drivers are travelling in familiar surroundings. Maps will always be up-to-date thanks to SOTA technology.

Land Rover’s new Electrical Vehicle Architecture, state-of-the-art forward-facing digital camera, advanced ultrasonic sensors and powerful 3Gbit/s onboard network support a comprehensive suite of driver assistance technologies, with the cameras and sensors governed by a single integrated processor, or domain controller, for optimised security. These include a 3D Surround Camera that goes above and beyond, providing both 360-degree plan and new 3D exterior perspective views of the surrounding area, both off and on road. The advanced system provides enhanced augmented on-screen visualisation when using Tow Assist, Wade Sensing and Land Rover’s ClearSight Ground View transparent bonnet technology, to improve visibility of the vehicle’s surroundings. To maintain rearward visibility, all new Defenders fitted with the front jump seat also feature ClearSight Rear View technology. At the touch of a button, the frameless interior mirror switches from a conventional mirror to a digital screen showing a feed provided by a high-definition rear-facing camera mounted high at the back of the vehicle. The clever technology effectively makes the rear pillars and spare wheel invisible, while also providing a 50-degree wider field of vision to eliminate rear blindspots. The 1.7-megapixel

camera also provides superior clarity in low light conditions and has a hydrophobic coating to maintain performance in wet and muddy conditions.

a Driver Condition Monitor and 360 Park Aid, while the advanced chassis control features are supported by an ultra-fast Flexray network.

A Driver Assist Pack includes Adaptive Cruise Control and Rear Pre-Collision Monitor, which alerts following drivers who are failing to slow down by automatically flashing the hazard lights, as well as Blind Spot Assist, Rear Traffic Monitor and Clear Exit Monitor.

Stay connected

The comprehensive list of driver assistance technologies includes Emergency Braking, Lane Keep Assist, Traffic Sign Recognition, Cruise Control and Speed Limiter functions,

A comprehensive supply of charging sockets throughout the cabin will keep occupants charged and connected at all times, whether using digital devices to stream music or camping accessories to provide home comforts in remote locations. Front-row occupants can choose from a pair of 12V power supplies and a USB socket located

behind the central touchscreen – perfectly located to minimise trailing wires when used to power a dashcam. In the second row, occupants have two USBs and a pair of 12V charging points when specified with a centre console and when third-row seats are fitted, an additional two USB outlets. The loadspace also includes an additional 12-volt socket while a three-pin 230V domestic socket is also available. Thoughtful touches include the availability of USB sockets on the front seatbacks, specifically positioned to allow second-row occupants to charge devices while using the optional Click and Go tablet holders.

Secure and convenient key technology State-of-the-art keyless technology brings added cyber security and convenience with advanced Ultra Wide Band (UWB) transceivers preventing thefts from copycat devices. Jaguar Land Rover was the first vehicle manufacturer to introduce the pioneering keyless entry system and new Defender uses the innovative set-up to resist relay attack and meet the world’s toughest security standards. The second-generation Activity Key can be specified in addition to the pair of standard fobs for heightened convenience. The water resistant (4 ATM) and shock-proof wearable device now incorporates an LCD watch. The wrist-worn device allows customers to unlock any door, lock or start the vehicle – doing away with the electronic ‘handshake’ previously required to lock or unlock the vehicle. Instead, customers can access or secure the Defender either using a button on the watch screen or its keyless entry functionality.

Land Rover Defender A star of the screen and on and off the road

The stunt co-ordinator on No Time to Die, the 25th in the iconic series of Bond movies due to hit the cinemas this year, needed an “unstoppable vehicle” for the next big Bond car chase, one that could “battle against the elements, steep descents and river crossings”. There was only one option - with its unique monocoque architecture, the new Defender, Land Rover’s “strongest and most robust family of vehicles yet” was perfectly designed for the role! The Defender has been engineered to withstand extreme conditions and repeated impact and was tested by the 007 expert stunt in extreme off-road conditions. Rehearsal footage filmed on location in Scotland has been released showing the Defender surviving a series of stunts from a 100-foot jump and high-speed drive on rough terrain to a flip. With 815mm tyres, it features the largest tyre family of any Land Rover, equipped to absorb shock and endure any terrain, protect the chassis and increase passenger comfort. It’s built with outstanding off-road geometry, to withstand more impact and with suspension adjustment of up to 185mm. Land Rover put their latest model through exhaustive simulation and rig testing and carried out more than 45,000 individual tests as well as driving it 1.2 million kilometres to ensure its their toughest yet. The new model represents 70 years of innovation and improvement, engineered with purpose with allnew durable exterior (with optional Satin Protective Film) updated interior design and the latest driver assistance and connectivity features.

The all-new infotainment system, Pivi Pro is inspired by smartphones and delivers full connectivity and key information at-a-glance. It’s ultra-fast and responsive and with its own battery, doesn’t need to ‘start up’ and is ready for sat nav as soon as you step into the vehicle. Geared for the future it will allow Land Rover to develop it and add features over the air as well as remotely fix any bugs. It’s fitted with a 10” touchscreen and designed so that you can easily customise the layout and add additional information and features. You can stay connected to your route with realtime traffic updates and live access to fuel prices and parking information, displayed in either 2D or 3D. Featuring full-colour, high-resolution graphics, it’ll give you all the key data you need, including your speed, gear position and navigation directions. Clearsight Ground View, par t of the 3D surround camera system allows you to effectively see ‘through’ the Defender’s bonnet, displaying multiple exterior views including the vehicle’s underside and wheels. Meanwhile, the Clearsight interior rear-view mirror uses a live video feed so that you’ve always got an unobstructed view. The new Defender has been designed to make driving at night less tiring. Exterior LED lights illuminate so that it is close to daylight conditions and its Matrix LED technology allows drivers to maximise highbeam visibility without blinding oncoming vehicles. Stay connected at all times with wireless charging in the centre console, USB points or 12v power sockets available on every row and a domestic plug socket ensuring multiple devices can be powered. The new 2020 model, equipped for 21st century adventures whether off or on the road is now in the Jacksons showrooms and if you want the Bond look, the spec used for filming features Santorini Black exteriors, darkened skid pans and 20-inch wheels with off-road tyres. The New Aston Martin V12 Speedster

For more info. Click here

A Puristic Limited Edition The Aston Mar tin V12 Speedster made its global debut this March, with just 88 examples of this puristic limited-edition model set to hit the road. Created by luxury British marque’s bespoke customisation service ‘Q by Aston Mar tin’, the Aston Martin V12 Speedster is a truly visceral driver’s car that draws inspiration from both the brand’s rich racing history and aeronautical design.

Aston Martin Lagonda President and Group CEO, Dr Andy Palmer describes the latest, most exciting special model as “An incredible demonstration of the breadth of capability and determination from the ‘Q by Aston Mar tin’ team, who have worked tirelessly to create this stunning, two-seat spor ts car aimed at our most demanding and enthusiastic customers.” Conceived a little over 12 months ago, the V12 Speedster has undergone an intensive development programme, going from drawing board to production reality within that shor t period. Demonstrating the skills and meticulous planning of ‘Q by Aston Mar tin’ and Aston Mar tin Design, the V12 Speedster is a living show car, underlining the company’s commitment

to deliver customers a stunning driver’s car, using the engineering ingenuity and advanced materials evident throughout the entire Aston Mar tin range. Utilising Aston Mar tin’s latest bonded aluminium architecture, the V12 Speedster uses elements from both the DBS Superleggera and Vantage model lines to create its own unique platform. With independent double wishbone front, and multi-link rear suspension with coil springs and adaptive damping offering Spor t, Spor t+ and Track modes, the V12 Speedster also benefits from standard 21-inch forged centre lock alloy wheels. Carbon Ceramic Brakes of 410mm on the front axle and 360mm at the rear are also standard equipment. Over the V12 Speedster’s unique chassis is a bespoke body constructed almost entirely from carbon fibre.

Miles Nurnberger, Director of Design, Aston Mar tin Lagonda, said: “With the V12 Speedster we do go back a step and look into our past for inspiration. Since the DB11 launch, everything has been focused and very forward looking. Here though, we find a different tempo. There’s clear lineage from the 1959 Le Mans winning DBR1 to our Centenary celebratory CC100 Speedster Concept in 2013. There is also a bit of 1953 DB3S in the mid-section, so it really is our latest incarnation of the Speedster concept. It’s also inspired by fighter jets as much as it is by our history, and it has been created to deliver an incredibly visceral experience, hence why it is a V12, rather than a V8. With the V12 Speedster we are amplifying all the emotional strings that we can to the absolute maximum.”

Nurnberger adds: “No roof or screen, a big engine, low, with broad shoulders and exaggerated and emotional styling with twin humps and the spine separating the driver and passenger. The light, low, rear end contrasts with the bold, enlarged grille, unique headlights and bonnet nostril at the front. The bonnet nostril we haven’t done in a very long time, but we’ve brought them back. It’s a neat trick visually to allow us to win some space for the V12. It creates this iconic looking vent.” The interior specification pushes new boundaries, using a mix of traditional and modern materials. Structural satin carbon fibre, contrasts with traditional hand-crafted Saddle Leather, chrome, aluminium and even 3D printed rubber. Visually and physically the interior reduces mass, for a

leaner, efficient style, but one that retains all the emotion and craftsmanship Aston Martins are renowned for. In front of the passenger is a removable leather bag in place of a traditional glove box, while there’s additional storage space under the rear bumps for luggage. Unveiled at Aston Martin’s Gaydon HQ, the V12 Speedster has been shown in a conceptual specification that is inspired by the legendary F/A-18 and will be available for customers to order. Born from an exciting new collaboration with Boeing and created by the brand’s bespoke customisation service ‘Q by Aston Martin’, this striking livery takes the legendary fighter jet for inspiration and is finished in Skyfall Silver,

with contrasting satin black on the exhaust tips, vent grilles and vanes. The dark theme is carried through to the interior, with satin dark chrome, machined aluminium, black leather, black technical textile, black carpets and vivid red Aston Martin scripted door pulls, creating a purposeful look for this conceptual styling. Powering the V12 Speedster is Aston Martin’s scintillating 5.2-litre, Twin-Turbo V12 engine, with a peak output of 700hp1 and 753Nm1 of torque. Front mid-mounted, the all alloy, quad cam 48-valve engine is mated to a ZF 8-Speed automatic transmission with a limitedslip differential driving the rear wheels. The V12 Speedster is able to accelerate to 62mph (100km/h) in 3.5 seconds on the way to a limited top speed of 186mph (300km/h)1.

The iconic V12 engine promises scintillating performance, but further underlining the V12 Speedster’s abundant character and unparalleled commitment to a thrilling drive is an even more invigorating aural signature. To create this Aston Martin’s engineers have created a bespoke stainless-steel exhaust system exiting centrally into the diffuser surface at the rear of the car for an even more rousing, characterful sound from the drivetrain. With the V12 Speedster, every element of the drive is experiential, most obviously the removal of the windscreen adding to the visceral engagement, heightening the driving experience to new levels. Matt Becker, Aston Martin Chief Engineer, said: “For raw driving thrills the V12 Speedster is unparalleled, the fully open element of the car adding a new dimension to the experience. It engages on every level, delivering a precise, involving driving experience, with agility and poise backed by abundant power from Aston Mar tin’s twin-turbo 5.2-litre V12. Driving doesn’t get any purer than this.” Aston Martin Lagonda President and Group CEO, Dr Andy Palmer said: “Nothing demonstrates Aston Mar tin’s commitment to providing unique, special models to its customers more than the V12 Speedster. The 88 hand-built cars will be sought after by driving enthusiasts and collectors alike all around the world. I’m excited not just about what they offer drivers, but of what it represents. The V12 Speedster not just showcases our incredible engineering capability and ambition, but also celebrating Aston Mar tin’s rich heritage.” Orders are now being taken for the V12 Speedster with deliveries expected to begin in the first quar ter of 2021. BMW Gesture Control A helping hand from BMW

The film Minority Repor t hit our screens in 2002 with its dystopian 2054 setting and futuristic technology. But it has taken less than 20 years for BMW to introduce a taste of this technology with its gesture-based user interface. BMW’s new and innovative Gesture Control system, available in the BMW 7 Series is designed to give drivers a helping hand so that they can focus on the road ahead. Driving at fast speeds, you need to be able to make quick decisions with as few distractions as possible and BMW has been at the forefront of safety technologies to help make the drive safer.

This innovative non-contact recognition, currently unique to BMW means there are no buttons to press or screens to touch so there’s no need to take your eyes off the road whilst looking for things like the volume control. It gives drivers control over the BMW iDrive system with just a wave of the hand or point of the finger.

This intuitive and simple-to-use system lets you control specific infotainment functions; you can point to answer a phone call, swipe to reject one, circle your finger one way to turn the volume up on the infotainment system and circle it the other way to turn it down. You can even get a 360-degree view of the car and customise your settings.

A tiny infra-red camera installed in the vehicle’s roof lining and aimed at the area above the gear lever recognises simple hand gestures made under the rear-view mirror and tells the computer to perform the appropriate action.

The gesture controls also come with tips that can be displayed on the screen and which can be turned off if you’re familiar with all the moves. Here’s the hand gestures you’ll need to get the most from the system: Accept a call – Point to the BMW iDrive touchscreen Reject a call – Swipe your hand to the right Turn the volume up – Circle your finger clockwise Turn the volume down – Circle your finger anti-Clockwise Change rear view camera angle – Create a circle with your thumb and forefinger Select navigation/custom setting – Point to the touchscreen with two fingers Over-the-air updates allow the features to stay current and add new functionality when available. The technology is currently only available on the top-line 7 series but is expected to be rolled out in other BMW models. But if Tom Cruise style gestures aren’t your thing, the iDrive Controller still features on the centre console and can be used instead to navigate menus by rotating or pushing down on the knob or by drawing letters on its touch sensitive surface.

Say ‘Hey’ to Mercedes MBUX Say hey or hi Mercedes and you’ll be conversing with the most advanced infotainment system from the luxury motor manufacturer yet. The Mercedes-Benz User Experience, or MBUX as it is more commonly known entered series production in the new A-Class that launched in 2018 and has since been rolled out in other Mercedes-Benz models. Considerable research has gone into how drivers interact with their vehicles and the result is a smar t and sophisticated multi-media system using state-of-the-ar t technology. MBUX has been designed from the ground up, centered around a touch interface. There is more than one way for you as a driver to interact with it; touchscreen, touchpad or with the touch control buttons integrated into the steering wheel, all geared so that you can interact with the car effor tlessly and with less distraction while you’re driving. The new centre console touch pad uses the same swiping gestures, pinch to zoom and taps as well as handwriting recognition for those who want to input addresses and phone numbers that way instead. Its processing capacity really sets it apar t. It’s fast and responsive and its solid voice control and access to the cloud ensures a superior smar tphone-style user experience. A unique feature is its ability to learn through artificial intelligence, ensuring the functions you interact with the most are only a few swipes away. You can set this vir tual assistant

up to your own profile and up to six others and shor tcuts will appear, designed to make your journey easier. Over time the car will learn your frequent destinations, keep track of your seat position, ambient lighting setting and drive modes, mobile phone calls, contacts and diary and will even remember your favourite radio station which will appear in the suggestions menu when you set off on your commute to work. The natural voice control responds to almost every word, even processing indirect speech. In the same way as you’d ask Amazon’s Alexa a question, you can chat to your car. As long as you are connected to the mobile phone network, a simple ‘hey’ or ‘hi Mercedes’

and you can find out the location of the nearest restaurant. Say ‘I feel cold’ and the air conditioning will respond, increasing the temperature control. You’re unlikely to ever get lost again, thanks to its amazing navigation offering. The inbuilt navigation uses a variety of methods to ensure you safely and accurately get to your destination, par ticularly helpful when it’s a place you’re not familiar with. The entire globe has been divided up into 3 x 3 metre squares and each of those squares has been given its own combination of three words. The What3Words mapping system makes entering destinations really simple… all you need to do is download the app, enter the location you are heading to, find the

combination of those three words and you’re ready to go. It’s one of the most reliable ways to navigate to a place, helping you find friends at an exact spot even in obscure or remote places. The innovative Augmented Reality Navigation uses a camera at the front of the car to stream a live feed of your surroundings which is shown on the cockpit’s widescreen media display. This live feed, showing the actual road ahead is then overlaid with a wealth of navigational information including arrows to direct you where to go, street names and door numbers of houses and businesses. This intuitive infotainment system provides a seamless user experience, one which is sure to appeal to all tech-savvy drivers on the roads.

Audi – PIA

The PIA system will work with the car familiarising itself with you and your habits and tailor its comfor t and infotainment systems to suit your preferences, greeting you personally and adjusting all in car systems to suit you.

Audi’s Personal Intelligent Assistant, or PIA is a prototype designed to do the thinking for you while you concentrate on the road ahead.

It has the ability to save your preferred destinations, connect with the date, time and the current traffic situation and will even suggest you set off early if there’s a lot of traffic.

A driving assistant that does the thinking for you

The German motor manufacturer is developing technology where ar tificial intelligence takes centre stage, giving you more than just an extra pair of eyes.

It’s up to you to decide how ‘chatty’ you want your assistant to be. It will respond to

your voice and uses tailored algorithms to communicate autonomously and adaptively with the driver. It will even help you find a new song by your favourite ar tist. During longer drives or traffic hold ups, the Audi system can play relaxing music, adjust the seat to a relaxing position or dim the interior lighting when it’s dark. It’s simply down to the driver and passengers to decide how they want to use this artificial intelligence. When it comes to parking, this advanced technology is there to not only help you find

a parking spot but to park the car for you – aimed at giving you time to get on with your day. The Audi of the future identifies driver preferences after just a shor t time and adjusts the settings on its own. If desired, the car can also adjust its settings based on the user’s condition, which it identifies by means of sensors in the vehicle that observe the user’s driving style and vital functions such as skin temperature and pulse. In doing so, the Audi Intelligence Experience increases the passengers’ level of safety.

BEAUTIFUL IS RELENTLESS The New DBX

Aston Martin’s first SUV

For more info. Click here

Aston Martin’s first SUV

• Aston Martin launches fourth car of transformational Second Century Plan

• First SUV for 106-year-old luxury British marque

• Delivers broadest design brief of any Aston Martin in history

• Broad range of capability from sportscar dynamics to off-road versatility

The unveiling of DBX Aston Mar tin’s first SUV marks a bold new chapter and a landmark moment in Aston Martin’s illustrious 106-year history. The culmination of an extensive development programme that began vir tual development stretching back to 2015, DBX signals a new era in Aston Mar tin’s pursuit to deliver exceptional performance, style and usability in a segment previously unexplored by the world-famous

manufacturer. Bringing both the versatility and indulgence expected of a luxury SUV with spor ts car levels of dynamic performance, DBX sets a bold new standard in this sector. Aston Mar tin Lagonda President & Group CEO, Dr. Andy Palmer said: “I can’t emphasise enough how incredibly exciting and significant DBX is for Aston Mar tin. Through its development alone, this beautiful SUV has already taken the company into new territories and in inspiring directions.” The foundation of DBX is a new dedicated SUV platform, something rarely seen across the sector. More than ever before, this clean sheet of paper has allowed all depar tments within Aston Mar tin to innovate and push the boundaries of what British design and engineering can create, resulting in a truly remarkable product. Utilising bonded aluminium, a construction method Aston Mar tin has refined through the development of its spor ts cars, the body structure is both very light and incredibly stiff. It was designed to allow maximum room in the cabin, putting a premium on refinement and class

leading spaciousness for both front and rear occupants. Meanwhile, the design of the new platform has also enabled DBX to achieve exceptional dynamics both on and off-road. Adaptive triple volume air suspension has been combined with the latest 48v electric anti-roll control system (eARC) and electronic adaptive dampers to provide the new SUV with a huge breadth of ability. With its capacity to raise the ride height by 45mm or lower it by 50mm the air suspension gives any driver the confidence to tackle a wide range of terrain.

Powered by a new version of the characterful 4-litre, twin-turbocharged V8 engine found in DB11 and Vantage, DBX features an impressive output of 550PS and 700NM of torque, carefully tuned to meet the specific needs of this model. Transmitting this power and torque to the ground is a nine-speed torque conver tor automatic gearbox, allied to an all-wheel drive system with active differentials featuring an active central differential and an electronic rear limited slip differential (eDiff). This allows the torque to be moved precisely both fore

and aft in the vehicle and also across the rear axle. When combined with the bespoke steering system that has been tuned to deliver feel and spor ts car-like response, DBX imbues the driver with an overriding sense of control, whatever the conditions. Aston Mar tin’s first ever full-size 5-seat model is not only exceptionally versatile in terms of the terrain that it can tackle, it is also extremely adaptable to a wide variety of lifestyle needs and owners. With 632 litres of boot space and 40:20:40

split folding rear seats DBX possesses all the flexible load capacity expected of an SUV with class-leading interior space. The load space offers a practical and cleanly designed space maximising the practicality for a variety of luggage, such as suitcases, golf bags and ski equipment. Complimenting the incredibly high standard specification of DBX, which includes all available active safety systems, there are many optional accessory packages offered. These packages will tailor the car even fur ther to customers’ needs, spor ts or pastimes.

For example, the Pet package will include, amongst other things, a por table washer to help attend to the needs of a muddy dog after a walk. Alternatively, the Snow package will deliver boot warmers to make a ski trip just that little bit more pleasurable. The luxuriously handcrafted interior of DBX has been designed to provide equal space and comfort whether sitting in the front or rear of the car. Class-leading headroom and legroom combines with a full-length glass panoramic roof and frameless door glass to offer a fantastically light and spacious cabin environment. The use of sports car seat packaging in the front not only provides the driver with exceptional support and long-distance driving comfort, but also provides knee and footwell clearance for those sitting behind. Small touches throughout, including separate central armrests, glovebox design and the ergonomic positioning of the car’s key control systems, have been guided carefully by the input of the brand’s Female Advisory Board, dealership feedback and a variety of private focus groups held worldwide. The seats are trimmed in sumptuous, full grain leather, sourced from long term par tner Bridge of Weir. Throughout the cabin, DBX maintains an authenticity of materials, with judicious use of metal, glass and wood. Framed by these materials is an abundance of technology. A 10.25” TFT screen sits elegantly flush in the centre console, while a huge 12.3” TFT screen provides a wealth of information to the driver. Apple CarPlay comes as standard, as does a 360-degree camera system and ambient lighting that offers 64 different colours in two zones. DBX’s exterior works as hard as the interior at bringing the elegance of Aston Mar tin’s spor ts cars into the world of the SUV. From the signature ‘DB’ grille at the front, through

the sculptured sides and design feature line, to the tailgate with a flip that draws inspiration from Vantage, this is an Aston Mar tin from first glance to detailed inspection. Beautiful details like the hidden side glass seals on the frameless doors and glass B-pillar finishers add an elegant sleekness and confidence to the stance. Cutaway sills also assist in narrowing the stepover required to enter the sumptuous cabin, while reducing the risk of ruining a fine dress or suit on arrival to a dinner engagement. The DBX is on sale now, to find out more please contact Rober t Kean, on +44 (0)1983 215 508, +44 (0)7797 755 000 or via email at rober tkean@jacksons.je

Revealed

The New Bentley Bacalar

Bentley Mulliner has revealed the all-new Bacalar at the home of Bentley in Crewe, England this morning. The rarest two-door Bentley of the modern era, and the ultimate expression of two-seat, open-air luxury, this definitive Grand Tourer spearheads a return to coachbuilding by Bentley Mulliner – the oldest coachbuilder in the world.

Just 12 examples of this striking, limited edition model are being created, guaranteeing rarity and exclusivity, and offering supreme luxury and breath-taking performance . Bacalar looks to the future of bespoke luxury motoring each model will be handcrafted in Bentley Mulliner’s workshop in Crewe, according to the individual customer’s personal tastes.

This exceptionally rare car is appropriately named after Laguna Bacalar in Mexico’s Yucatan peninsula, a lake renowned for its breath-taking natural beauty, continuing Bentley’s strategy of naming cars after remarkable landmarks which star ted with Bentayga in 2015.

Bacalar has been brought to life by Bentley Mulliner, reviving its specialism in providing rare coach-built cars to only a few discerning customers.

A roofless Barchetta design with all-new and highly muscular coachwork, embracing a myriad of options and materials, each Bacalar will be truly unique, the result of direct interaction between the Bentley Mulliner design team and the individual customer. The Bacalar is a fully bespoke Bentley, orientated towards a two seat open top experience, and carrying a number of the forward thinking elements of future luxury, first heralded in the EXP100GT as par t of Bentley’s Centenary celebrations last year

Bacalar is a rare and remarkable Bentley, and whilst clearly defined, will be an extraordinary and collaborative experience for just twelve discerning people who will now co-create, collect, drive and treasure. If you would like to enquire about the waiting list for the Bacalar or to discuss Bentley Mulliner coachbuilt cars in more detail, please contact Rober t Kean, on +44 (0)1983 215508, +44 (0)7797 755 000 or via email at rober tkean@jacksons.je
