South Dakota State Golf It has been more than a decade since the South Dakota State men’s and women’s golf teams have had a new coach. Does a new coach, new season mean new expectations for Jackrabbit golf? You betcha.

The 2014-15 versions of the men’s and women’s golf programs have first-year director of golf Casey VanDamme at the helm, a head coach considered by many as one of the world’s premier instructors and one of the brightest up-and-coming collegiate coaches in the country. In VanDamme, the Jacks have a mentor who is going to raise the their level of play and push for a pair of Summit League titles this season.

The SDSU men’s squad welcomes six letterwinners and three freshmen, including the Jacks’ top returner in sophomore Grant Smith, who had five top-20 finishes and placed 12th at his first Summit League Championship. The Des Moines, Iowa, native, posted a 75.19 scoring average, good for 13th in The Summit League. Smith also shot a season-low 66 in the third round of the Jackrabbit Fall Invitational and had 12 rounds below par.

Junior Dylan Baker (Eden Prairie, Minn.) and sophomore Trevor Tobin (Brandon) each played key roles in SDSU’s come-from-behind third-place finish at the league championship.

Baker, who posted a 77.07 scoring average, shot a 78 in the first round, was injured during the second round, but came back in the third to shoot a 73 in Texas. On the season, Baker had his best outing when he tied for eighth at the Beu/Mussantto Invitational in Macomb, Ill., shooting a third-round 228.

Tobin came on strong at the end of 2013-14, shooting a season-low 73 in the third round of The Summit League Championship to finish tied for 23rd. His best three-round score of 232 came at the ASU Red Wolf Intercollegiate.

Sophomore Ian Rinken (Sioux Falls) played 19 rounds in seven events and finished with a 78.95 scoring average while junior Austin Sitter (Sioux Falls) saw action in six events and posted a 79 scoring average.

Joining the team this past spring, sophomore Guillermo Gonzalez (Merida, Yucatan) played in three tournaments, shooting a season-low 76 in the Beu/Mussantto Invitational.

Michael Duch (Aberdeen) and Naqiuddin Fuad (Perak, Malaysia).

Formerly ranked No. 1 in Manitoba by the National Junior Golf Scoreboard, Sackett ranked 26th on the Canadian Junior National Order of Merit. In tournament play this past year, he placed second at the CN Future Links Western Championships, third at the Maple Leaf Junior Tour Tournament of Champions and tied for fourth at the 2013 Manitoba Junior Boys Championship, shooting a 76.

Duch comes to South Dakota State after winning the 2013 South Dakota Class A state title.

He was also a two-time Region 1A champion and the 2013 Northeast Conference champion. Additionally, Duch is a three-time all-state selection.

Fuad also brings an impressive list of accomplishments. In 2013, he was the Etiqa Selangor International Junior Masters Champion, and in 2012, Fuad was the Asian Pacific Junior Am Champion, runner-up at Malaysian Junior Open and runner-up at U.S. Kids World Junior - Under-21 Boys Division.

Director of Golf - Casey VanDamme, First year

Making his coaching debut, Casey VanDamme takes over the South Dakota State golf program as Director of Golf after serving as Director of Instruction/ Player Development for men’s golf at the University of Tennessee.

“Casey VanDamme brings a wealth of golf knowledge to this position. He's known as an accomplished golf instructor and a tremendous addition to the Jackrabbit family,” Sell said. “I know he’ll be a great fit with our staff, and I believe the student-athletes on our current team and our golf letterwinners will immediately gravitate toward him and his personality.”

VanDamme, who becomes SDSU’s secondfull-time golf coach, spent the last five seasons at Tennessee. During his tenure, Tennessee

equaled its best postseason stretch in school history with five trips to the NCAA Championship regionals, advancing to the 2010, 2011 and 2013 NCAA Championships.

Prior to coaching the Vols, VanDamme learned the trade under renowned golf instructor Jim McLean. He spent seven years at the Jim McLean Golf School in Palm Springs, Calif., and Traverse City, Mich., becoming the youngest master instructor in school history.

VanDamme has worked with PGA Tour players, including as an on-site teaching professional to a participant in the 2009 PGA Championship.

He began his collegiate golf career at Marquette before finishing at Northern Michigan, where he graduated in 2000. VanDamme started his tenure under McLean in 1998 while still playing collegiately. He also played professionally on the National Golf Association Hooters Tour in 2003-04.

Dean Ellis, who spent 20 years as the Northern Michigan head golf coach, joined the South Dakota State golf program as assistant coach in 2014.

Ellis, who was named the head golf coach at Northern Michigan in 1993, led NMU to the 2014 NCAA Regionals, where it placed 14th, after finishing eighth at the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Golf (GLIAC) Championships.

Additionally, he guided the Wildcats to the 1999 NCAA Division II Tournament.

While at Northern Michigan, Ellis served as the Golf Association of Michigan Governor, on the NCAA Division II, District IV Golf Regional Advisory Committees and organized and administrated the 1999 and 2010 GLIAC Golf Championships.

In 2011-12, Ellis was the lead instructor at Grand Traverse Resort & Spa where he provided individual and group lessons with use of JC-Video and Foresight GC2. He was also the head golf professional at the Wawonowin Country Club in Ishpeming, Mich., in 1991, winning the club championship in 1995. Additionally, Ellis won the Upper Peninsula men’s amateur championship in 1981.

Ellis was also the men’s basketball coach at Northern Michigan beginning in 1986-87. He posted a 369-303 record, becoming the winningest coach in program history in 2005. Ellis stepped down as head coach in 2010 after 24

From 2006 to 2009, VanDamme served as athletic director at Mid Peninsula High School in Rock, Mich., also working summers since 2005 with the CVD Golf Academy in Gladstone, Mich. He also served in 2008 as head golf professional at LochenHeath Golf Club in Traverse City.

VanDamme and his wife, the former Jill Gobert, are natives of Perkins, Mich., are the parents of daughters, Madelyn and Claire, and son, Andrew.

Assistant Coach - Dean Ellis, First year

Under Ellis’ leadership, the Wildcats made 13 appearances in the GLIAC postseason tournament and won the 1999-2000 title. His 1993, 1999 and 2000 squads won GLIAC regularseason titles and also qualified for the NCAA Division II Great Lakes Regional Tournament.

He had four 20-win seasons (1993, '94, '99, '00) and was selected 1993 GLIAC Coach of the Year.

A native of Negaunee, Mich., where he was a standout athlete, Ellis earned three letters in basketball and four in golf at Southwest Missouri State University. He transferred to Northern Michigan where he completed work on his bachelor’s degree in 1983.

Ellis and his wife, Lois, are the parents of David and Daniel.

Brookings Country Club - Brookings, S.D.

Opened: 1960 Designed by Earl Bartling and Ward Waltz Men’s Course: 6,770 yards, par 72 Women’s Course: 6,015 yards, par 72

Brookings Country Club History Around 1920, a group of young men that included Horace and Van Fishback, Elmer Sexauer, Earl Bartling and a few others created the first golf course in Brookings by mowing the pasture behind Fishback’s barn. Tomato cans were used to make the nine holes. The eight-foot wide greens were constructed with sand and oil. In 1921, the young men leased 50 acres of land from A.J. Kendall for $175 a year.

The course was designed by Earl Bartling and Ward Waltz because the club had no money to hire a golf architect. Their club started with approximately 30 members who paid $20 per year for dues.

In 1926, a new clubhouse was constructed. It was 28 x 50 feet with porches on the north and east sides. A dance floor, basement, concession room, locker rooms and a kitchen were also included.

In 1945, the greens were redone, and in the 1960s, nine new holes were added.

The Brookings Country Club has hosted several high profile golf tournaments over the years, including the South Dakota Golf Association (SDGA) Men’s Match Play Championship in 1982, 1991 and 2006, and the SDGA Men’s Amateur Championship in 1981, 1988 and 1997.

The United States Senior Amateur Qualifying was held at the country club in the summer 2007, while the SDGA Men’s Senior Championship took place there in 2008.

South Dakota State Golf Indoor Facilities

Being an upper Midwest school with a golf program can be tough.

“We used to basically shut down for two months out of the year. Two hitting mats and a simple net gets boring,” former head coach Jared Baszler said.

Thanks to a $85,000 indoor facility on the south side of Frost Arena, that is not the case anymore.

Three years ago, a few of the golfers’ parents approached Baszler and got the ball rolling on fundraising for the project. Support was rounded up by several former Jackrabbit golfers, alumni, other parents of current golfers and just about anyone who had any connection to the SDSU golf program.

The first phase of the Jacks’ facility was the 960 square-foot (48 x 20

feet) putting and chipping area. After $35,000 and some good old-fashioned labor (a wall had to be knocked out), phase one was completed over in winter 2012. SynLawn, an artifical grass company, installed the indoor putting green in less than two days.

One of the biggest advantages of the simulator is the ‘launch monitor’, a portable black box which can be used indoors or on the course and keeps data on every swing of every golfer for analysis. Like watching film for golfers, the launch monitor records data such as clubhead speed, carry distance, angle of attack, ball spin, etc. The launch monitor and simulator setup were purchased from Foresight Sports—a leader in the launch monitor sector of the golf industry.

Welcome to South Dakota State University

South Dakota State University is the state’s Morrill Act land-grant university and its largest, most comprehensive institution of higher education. It has

an enrollment of 12,557 students from all 50 states and 70 countries who can choose from more than 175 majors, minors and specializations. The institution also offers 29 master’s degree programs, 15 Ph.D. and two professional programs.

SDSU has grown from 80 acres at its founding in 1881 to a 422-acre campus with facilities valued at more than $381 million. The university owns or leases another 15,000 acres of land for research throughout the state.

The university provides a rich academic experience in an environment of inclusion and access through inspired, student-centered education, creative activities and research, innovation and engagement that improve the quality of life in South Dakota, the region, the nation and the world.

SDSU confers degrees through six colleges: Agriculture and Biological Sciences, Arts and Sciences, Education and Human Sciences, the Jerome J. Lohr College of Engineering, Nursing and Pharmacy, as well as the Graduate School. Qualified 26

students may enroll in the Van D. and Barbara B. Fishback Honors College.

The Office of Continuing and Distance Education facilitates distance delivery of credit and noncredit programming, and University Centers in Sioux Falls, Pierre and Rapid City offer degree programs and student support services comparable to those offered on the Brookings campus.

SDSU Extension and the Agricultural Experiment Station reach all parts of the state. The federally funded North Central Regional Sun Grant Center (focused on developing biobased energy alternatives) and the North Central Agricultural Research Laboratory (the only USDA Agricultural Research Service facility in the state), along with the Northern Plains Biostress Laboratory, the Water and Environmental Engineering Research Center, the Animal Disease Research and Diagnostic Laboratory and the Northeast Research Center near South Shore demonstrate the university’s commitment to purpose-driven research and that supports economic development.

Other Facilities The South Dakota Art Museum’s collections showcase the state’s rich art history, including early masterpieces of Native American art, the famed Harvey Dunn paintings of pioneer life and the exclusive Vera Way Marghab linens.

Heritage Museum transformed the former Stock Judging Pavilion into a home for exhibits that record and preserve the agrarian heritage of South Dakota.

Visitors attend the museum from all 50 states and many foreign countries.

McCrory Gardens provides a beautiful setting to learn about ornamental plants adapted to the Northern Great Plains. Enjoy a stroll through the radiant colors and fragrances of the 25-plus acres of trial and display gardens, wander through the 40-acre arboretum or attend a special event in the Education and Visitor Center.

The Hilton M. Briggs Library serves students, faculty, staff and the broader South Dakota community through its holdings of more than one million items, 32,000 online journals, 18,000 electronic books, and 80,000 maps. The library has served as a depository for federal documents since 1889. The archives and special collections encompass 7,500 linear feet of materials and 1,675 digitized items.

The Senator Thomas A. Daschle Congressional Research Study allows for public access to the career papers of Senator Daschle, a 1969 SDSU graduate. Located within the Special Collections area on the upper level of the Hilton M. Briggs Library, the papers consist of more than 2,000 linear feet of materials that document the senator’s 26year career in the U.S. House and Senate from 1979 to 2004.

The American Indian Education and Cultural Center at SDSU is the nexus of cultural programming, services and advocacy to support American Indian students, encourage appreciation of cultural and human differences and advocate for the inclusion of Indigenous knowledge.

Research and Economic Development Research has been an essential part of the university’s mission since passage of the 1887 Hatch

Act, which established state agricultural experiment stations. SDSU has the most active research program in the state with nearly $70 million in research expenditures, and in 2006 the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching designated SDSU as South Dakota’s first High Research Activity institution.

In addition to 42 graduate programs offered in six colleges, undergraduates also have research opportunities led by innovative faculty in renewable energy, food, health sciences, engineering and nursing, as well as with programs like the Sun Grant Initiative and the Geographic Information Science Center of Excellence.

SDSU currently is home to three state-funded Governor’s Research Centers: the Center for Biological Control and Analysis by Applied Photonics, and the Drought Tolerance and Translational Cancer Research centers. SDSU researchers also participate in two other Governor’s Research Centers focused on materials and manufacturing at the South Dakota School of Mines and Technology. In addition, SDSU is the lead for the multi-institution South Dakota Research Innovation Center: the Biochemical Spatioltemporal NeTwork Resource Center.

The Technology Transfer Office, which assists SDSU researchers in commercializing intellectual properties and fosters collaborations between the university and industry partners, has generated some $1.8 million in royalties annually since 2010 via an average of 178 total agreements each year, including invention disclosures, patents filed and agreements with start-ups.

Industry partnerships through the Research Park at South Dakota State enable technology transfer and stimulate economic development for the state.

INNOVATIVE

Sanford-Jackrabbit Athletic Complex

EXCELLENCE

The South Dakota State University campus has seen numerous building projects the past 10 years. And it is not slowing.

Currently under construction are the Architecture, Mathematics and Engineering Building, the Sanford-Jackrabbit Athletic Complex and the Enrollment Services Center.

The Architecture, Mathematics and Engineering Building will become home for several of the most dynamic programs on campus including: • Center for Financial Analytics, • Center for Statistics and Biometrics, • Center for Computational Science, • Senior Design Lab for Mechanical Engineering, and • Engineering Resource Center.

Construction of that 60,000-square-foot, $17 million project started in fall 2013 after the summer was spent cleaning and then demolishing Solberg Annex and the Industrial Arts Building. The new building’s footprint also extends to the parking lot north of those structures.

Completion is set for early 2015 with most of the moving to occur in spring and summer 2015. The first floor will be home to the mechanical engineering prototyping and design labs and construction and operations management departments as well as shared lab space with architecture. The mathematics and statistics department will be on the second floor while the third floor will house the architecture department.

The Sanford-Jackrabbit Athletic Complex is a multipurpose indoor competition and training facility currently under construction at South Dakota State University. The project, which will cost an estimated $32 million, was completed this fall.

The facility will include an eight-lane, 300-meter track and 100 yards of synthetic turf, along with space for sports medicine, athletic training, strength and conditioning, physical therapy, hydrotherapy, observation rooms and office facilities.

The building formerly known as Medary Commons has been renamed the Enrollment Services Center. The following offices are at that site: enrollment services, admissions, financial aid, records and registration, and scholarships.

Research has been a vital part of SDSU since 1887 with the creation of the South Dakota Agricultural Experiment Station. Today, research provides a solid knowledge base for economic development, SDSU’s academic programs, and experiential opportunities for students.

The Innovation Campus at South Dakota State University marks the state’s first and only university-affiliated research park. Located on 125 acres just east of campus, it provides an environment that fosters partnerships among the university, business, government and the community to grow the sciences and technology-based economy.

THE JACKRABBITS

South Dakota State Golf

South Dakota State offers 21 sports with Jackrabbit teams competing at the NCAA Division I level. Football competes in the Division I Football Championship Subdivision in the Missouri Valley Football Conference, while 18 sports compete in The Summit League. Wrestling competes in the Western Wrestling Conference, while equestrian currently competes in the National Collegiate Equestrian Association.

LEGEND OF THE JACKRABBITS

Two theories exist as to how and why SDSU’s athletic teams became known as the Jackrabbits. Most believe that the name “Jackrabbits” came from a story and cartoon sketch that appeared in a Minneapolis newspaper following a 1905 football game between the University of Minnesota and South Dakota State College. Many believe that a reporter for the newspaper, knowing of the preponderance of jackrabbits in the Brookings area, wrote that the SDSC team was as quick as jackrabbits. Many people believe that the school adopted the Jackrabbits as its official nickname from that beginning.

The other theory about the origin of the nickname came in “The Jackrabbit”, SDSU’s yearbook. A poem in the 1907 yearbook puts forth the idea that the yearbook is called “The Jackrabbit” because a group of juniors wished to immortalize themselves by changing the name of the yearbook. Athletic teams followed suit, adopting the nickname.

Prior to the adoption of the Jackrabbit nickname, fans knew the school athletic teams as the Barn Yard Cadets, which made sense, because the school went by the name of South Dakota State College of Agriculture and Mechanic Arts in 1907.

The jackrabbit can run at speeds of 30-to-35 miles per hour, with bursts up to 45, making it the second fastest animal in North America, second only to the pronghorn antelope, which can run at speeds up to 60 miles per hour.

Properly speaking, jackrabbits should not be called rabbits but hares, with longer feet and longer ears than rabbits. Most hares live in open country, whereas rabbits—like cottontails—live in brushy habitats.

Jackrabbits can grow up to two feet long; weigh from six to nine pounds, with ears up to eight inches long. Hares do not eat meat; they eat tender herbs in the summer and woody twigs and bark in the winter.

COMMUNITY-MINDED

South Dakota State is located in Brookings, S.D., a community of more than 22,000 residents in eastern South Dakota, ranked No. 5 on the “Top 10 Best Small Towns 2013” list by Livability.com. Brookings is 55 miles north of Sioux Falls on Interstate 29 and half-an-hour west of the Minnesota border, within a day’s drive of Minneapolis (200 miles), Omaha (230 miles), Des Moines (330 miles) and Kansas City (415 miles).

Brookings and the surrounding area feature tremendous recreational and cultural opportunities. The city features a vibrant downtown area with shopping, nightlife opportunities and an interactive children’s museum. Brookings also maintains an extensive park and recreational trail system, with two 18-hole golf courses, and serves as a gateway to first-class fishing and hunting areas throughout eastern South Dakota.

The South Dakota Art Museum’s collections showcase the state’s rich art history, including early masterpieces of Native American art, the famed Harvey Dunn paintings of pioneer life and the exclusive Vera Way Marghab linens.

The South Dakota Agricultural Heritage Museum transformed the former Stock Judging Pavilion into a home for exhibits that record and preserve the agrarian heritage of South Dakota. Visitors attend the museum from all 50 states and many foreign countries.

McCrory Gardens provides a beautiful setting to learn about ornamental plants adapted to the Northern Great Plains. Enjoy a stroll through the radiant colors and fragrances of the 25-plus acres of trial and display gardens, wander through the 40-acre arboretum or attend a special event in the Education and Visitor Center. Adding to its honors, McCrory Gardens earned the distinction of being named an All-American Display Garden, one of only 13 in the nation.

The city is the world headquarters for Daktronics and Larson Manufacturing. Other large businesses that call Brookings home include Falcon Plastics, 3M, Bel Brands USA and Rainbow Play Systems.

Administration

David L. Chicoine became the 19th president of South Dakota State University in January 2007, the third alumnus to serve as the university’s chief executive.

Chicoine’s tenure at South Dakota State has been marked by a tremendous physical transformation on campus. Since his arrival, he and other university leadership spearheaded the development of a residential life and dining services master plan, a master plan for athletic facilities and the 2025 Design and Master Plan that will guide the overall transformation of campus for the next decade. All told, more than $270 million has been or is currently being spent for construction and facility upgrades on the Brookings campus.

South Dakota State has also seen tremendous growth in all areas associated with research under Chicoine’s leadership. Total research expenditures have increased by approximately $30 million annually since 2007, intellectual property disclosures went from less than 10 in 2007 to more than 60 in 2012, and Ph.D. enrollment has increased by more than 100 students in five years with the addition of four new Ph.D. programs.

Justin Sell joined the Jackrabbit staff May 7, 2009, as the 12th director of athletics at South Dakota State University.

Sell oversees the Jackrabbits’ 21-sport Division I athletics program. Eighteen SDSU teams compete in The Summit League, while football competes in the Missouri Valley Football Conference of the Football Championship Subdivision and wrestling competes as a member of the Western Wrestling Conference. Equestrian competes under the umbrella of the National Collegiate Equestrian Association.

Under Sell’s leadership, SDSU athletics continues to make strides in athletic competition, in the classroom, in fundraising and reconnecting with alumni.

Athletically, the Jackrabbits claimed 18 regular and postseason league championships in six different sports since 2009-10. That broad-based success has led SDSU to claim The Summit League Commissioner’s Cup all-sports trophy three times (2010-11, 2012-13, 2013-14), along with winning both The Summit League’s Dr. William Steinbrecher Men’s All-Sports Award and Dr. Helen Smiley Women’s All-Sports Award during the 2013-14 season. SDSU also claimed the Steinbrecher award during the 2012-13 season and was the recipient of the league’s Sportsmanship Award, an award voted upon by its peers, during the 2010-11 campaign.

In the classroom, Jackrabbit student-athletes continually post a GPA of 3.2 or higher in more than 70 different majors, which led SDSU to winning The Summit League’s Institutional Academic Achievement Award for the 2009-10 and 201213 academic years and the Missouri Valley Football Conference Academic Award in all six years in the league (2008-13).

In January 2011, Sell announced a partnership with Learfield Sports, signing 30

Institute of Government and Public Affairs faculty, then a department head (1988-1995) and dean (1995-2001), and finally as vice president for technology and economic development (2001-2007).

Chicoine currently serves on the Board of Directors of Growth Partnership, Ltd., the public-private partnership developing the Research Park at South Dakota State University and on the Board of Managers of South Dakota Innovation Partners, LLC, a company that provides pre-seed/seed capital and business development services to launch research-derived, technology-based start-ups.

He is an independent director on the Monsanto Company board, an external director on the First Bank and Trust board, and a trustee on the Avera McKennan Hospital and University Health Center board.

Chicoine was recently named the recipient of the 2013-14 Chief Executive Leadership Award by the Council for the Advancement and Support of Education (CASE) District VI. As a policy economist in state and local public finance and regional economics, Chicoine has contributed as a co-author or co-editor on four books and has published more than 100 academic journal articles, book chapters and professional papers.

The university’s president is serving a four-year team on the NCAA Presidential Advisory Group, a collection of 20 college and university chief executives who report to the NCAA Board of Directors.

A native of Elk Point, S.D., he completed B.S., M.S., M.A., and Ph.D. degrees, respectively, from SDSU, the University of Delaware, Western Illinois University and the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. His wife, Marcia, originally from Volga, S.D., is a graduate of South Dakota State University and of University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign with B.S. and M.Ed. degrees, respectively.

a 10-year deal worth $13 million for SDSU athletics. Learfield Sports quickly established a Brookings-based entity known as “Jackrabbit Sports Properties” that directs all aspects of the partnership, including managing and selling multimedia and sponsorship rights for South Dakota State Athletics.

In addition to the deal with Learfield Sports, Sell directed the implementation of the Letterwinners Club, which provides opportunities for Jackrabbit Athletics to reconnect and stay connected with former student-athletes, while supporting current student-athletes at South Dakota State.

In the years to come, Sell wants to continue reconnecting with former Jackrabbit student-athletes and enhancing the athletic facilities while still maintaining success, both in competition, but more importantly, in the classroom.

On the facilities front, Sell oversaw the completion of the Dykhouse StudentAthlete Center in 2010, and developed the 2025 SDSU Athletic Facilities Master Plan. Additionally, Sell spearheaded efforts to add permanent seating and a press box at Erv Huether Field, chairback seating in both Frost Arena and Coughlin-Alumni Stadium. Construction of the indoor facility—the SanfordJackrabbit Athletic Complex—began in August 2013, with completion slated for this fall. Lead gifts totaling $12.5 million toward the construction of a new football stadium with seating up to 20,000 were received in October 2013. The project begins this fall, with completion set for summer 2016.

Born in Salem, Ore., and raised in Columbus, Ohio, Sell came to South Dakota State from the University of Northern Iowa, where he worked in various roles, both at the university and in the community for 10 years. He also worked at Villanova University, Syracuse University, The Ohio State University and Bowling Green State University. Sell gained further experience working in the private sector for various sports teams and events.

In the Brookings community, where Sell lives with his wife, Jennie, and their four children: Abbie, Zach, Josh and Eric, he serves as vice president of the Brookings Chamber of Commerce, vice president for the Brookings Friends of Baseball and on the Brookings Health System Board of Trustees.

Sell earned his bachelor’s degree in sport management from Bowling Green State University (Ohio) in 1991 and completed a master’s degree in physical education/sport administration at The Ohio State University in 1992.

South Dakota State Golf Leon Costello

Administration

Deputy Director of Athletics Loras College ‘98

Leon Costello brought his comprehensive background in athletic marketing and administration from the University of Northern Iowa to the South Dakota State athletic staff in March 2010 as the senior associate athletic director for external affairs. He was promoted to Deputy Director of Athletics in July 2014.

In his role as a deputy director, Costello manages the external operations of the SDSU Athletic Department, which includes ticket operations, athletic marketing and sports information. He also serves as the department liaison for Jackrabbit Sports Properties and works as the sports supervisor for the Jackrabbit volleyball, men’s basketball and wrestling teams.

Before joining the Jackrabbits, Costello worked in a variety of roles for the Northern Iowa Athletic Department in his eight years on staff. From July 2008

until the end of his tenure at UNI, he served as the associate athletic director for external relations overseeing the marketing efforts for the Panther athletic program, directed the Panther Scholarship Club and supervised the men’s and women’s golf programs.

From 2005-08, Costello served as the assistant athletic director for marketing and promotions, where he assisted with the fundraising efforts of the McLeod Center capital project and coordinated all aspects for the athletic sales and marketing plan, including managing the Northern Iowa Sports Radio Network.

A native of Fairbank, Iowa, Costello graduated from Loras College with a bachelor’s degree in physical education and sport science in 1998. While at Loras, he also played for the Duhawk men’s basketball team.

Costello completed his master’s degree from Western Illinois University in sport management in 2002 and served an internship in marketing and game operations with the Boston Celtics. In fall 2002, Northern Iowa hired him as its athletic marketing and promotions assistant, where he worked for a year before earning a promotion to director of athletic marketing and promotions in January 2003.

Leon and his wife, Heather, live in Brookings with their daughter, Cailin, and sons, Michael and Griffin.

Kathy Heylens

Brian Brunner

Kathy Heylens came to South Dakota State in July 1984 as a member of the staff in the admissions office before moving to athletics two years later as a senior secretary.

Heylens became the institution’s first full-time compliance coordinator in 1990 and continues those duties as the senior associate athletic director for compliance and senior woman’s administrator.

Heylens manages all aspects of the athletics compliance program to ensure strict adherence with NCAA, affiliated conferences and university rules and regulations for amateurism, eligibility, recruiting, financial aid, awards and benefits, playing and practice seasons and enforcement.

Heylens is serving an appointment to a four-year term on the NCAA Division I Legislative Council, which serves as the primary legislative body in the Division I governance structure. She also has been appointed to the four-member Legislative Council Administrative Committee, which acts on behalf of the full Legislative Council between meetings to transact routine items of business. She also serves on the NCAA Division I Football Championship Subdivision Governance Committee.

In addition to her day-to-day duties, Heylens serves on the Undergraduate Experience Committee, Diversity Committee, Intercollegiate Athletics Board and Compliance Team.

A Watertown native, Heylens and her husband, Bill, live in Volga and have two grown children.

Brian Brunner joined the Jackrabbits athletics staff in June 2014, as the assistant athletic director for annual giving, where he oversees the dayto-day operations of the Jackrabbit Club directs all annual solicitation efforts and is the men’s and women’s golf teams’ supervisor.

Brunner came to SDSU after spending four years in various roles at Central Michigan University. A former CMU student-athlete, he joined the Chippewa athletics department as its assistant director of the Chippewa Athletic Fund in 2010 before earning a promotion to Chippewa Athletic Fund director in 2013, where he oversaw its annual fundraising efforts. He also managed the Chippewa Club, 1100 Club and Chippewa Champions programs, the Chippewa Challenge Golf Outing and provided oversight for all annual fundraising campaigns. During his time with the Chippewa Athletic Fund, Brunner played a key role in two, record-setting milliondollar-plus annual fundraising campaigns.

During his CMU football career, Brunner appeared in 21 games at quarterback and served as a 2008 team captain. He earned Mid-American Conference West Offensive Player of the Week honors three times, earning an ESPN Helmet Sticker for his performance against Western Michigan in 2008. He also was named a 2008 National Strength and Conditioning All-American.

Brunner played internationally for the Schwaebisch Hall Unicorns of the German Football League and compiled a blog for the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel called “Playing for Schnitzel” detailing his time overseas.

Brunner earned his Bachelor of Science degree in journalism with minors in English and sport studies from Central Michigan in 2009, and a Master of Science in administration with a concentration in public administration from CMU in 2014.

Brunner lives in Brookings with his wife, Melanie.
