COACHING STAFF
Director of Golf - Casey VanDamme, Fifth Year
Jumping in headfirst was what fifth- year South Dakota State Director of Golf Casey VanDamme did when he took over the men’s golf program in 2014-15. Under his guidance, the Jackrabbits men’s golf team continues to make history, winning the program’s first Summit League Championship in 2016 and repeating in 2017. SDSU was the first team in The Summit League to win back-to-back championships since 2010. State is also one of five league teams since 1983 to make two-or-more NCAA Regional appearances. Since VanDamme’s arrival, he has coached four all-league selections, mentored all-academic performer and the Jackrabbits have rewritten the record book. He has also upgraded and transformed the Jackrabbits’ regular-season schedule. The two-time Summit League Coach of the Year has had The Summit League Player of the Year, a first-team All-Summit League selection, three second-team all-league picks and four all-tournament honorees in the last four years. In the classroom, Grant Smith earned Summit League All-Academic accolades twice and was named a Cleveland Golf/Srixon All-America Scholar by the Golf Coaches Association of America in 2016. Fourteen Jackrabbits have also been named to The
Summit League Academic Honor Roll. In the SDSU record book, the Jacks set the 18and 36-hole records and the single-season record for rounds and career rounds. Smith finished his career under VanDamme with the fourth-lowest singleseason stroke average (73.72) and third-lowest career stroke average (74.36). As a team, the Jackrabbits set the 54-hole record and posted the second-lowest single-season team scoring average (296.64) in 2015-16. South Dakota State moved from playing most of its regular-season tournaments within the region against regional opponents, but after VanDamme’s arrival SDSU began playing in national tournaments and against ranked teams and student-athletes. The Jackrabbits play, on average, 12 ranked teams per year and have defeated three top-50 teams. They have also played in Arizona five times, Florida, California and Colorado three times each and in events in North Carolina, South Carolina and Tennessee. VanDamme also added an additional SDSUhosted tournament, The Jackrabbit, bringing in an elite field of golfers for a three-day event at The Dunes course at Prairie Club in Valentine, Neb. Ranked teams such as Clemson, Tennessee, McNeese State, Arizona State, Texas A&M, South Florida and Oregon State have all made the trip to The Jackrabbit. SDSU has finished in the top five twice. Joining the Jackrabbits family in July 2014, VanDamme guided SDSU to a third-place finish at the 2015 Summit League Tournament and a pair of topfive finishes. In 2016, the Jackrabbits broke through, winning The Summit League Championship by 11 strokes. In their first NCAA Division I Regional, the Jackrabbits finished 11th, but captured the attention of the golf world when they were sixth after the opening round and Grant Smith was tied for first. VanDamme won his first Summit League Coach of the Year honor in 2016 while Smith was named the 2015-16 Summit League Golfer of the Year and a first-team All-Summit League selection. Felipe Strobach earned second-team honors and was The Summit League Newcomer of the Year. Both Smith and Strobach also were named to the all-tournament team at the league championship. In 2017, SDSU captured its second consecutive Summit League Championship with a two-stroke win. Smith won the individual title and was named the 2017 Summit League Championship MVP. Alejandro Restrepo was also named to the all-tournament team after tying for fourth in the two-day championship. During the regular season, the Jackrabbits placed fourth at The Jackrabbit Invitational, defeating then70th ranked Oregon State, and finished in the top 10 in six tournaments. VanDamme, who is SDSU’s second full-time golf coach, spent five seasons at Tennessee as director
of instruction/player development, beginning in 2009. During his tenure, Tennessee equaled its best postseason stretch in school history with five trips to the NCAA Championship regionals, advancing to the 2010, 2011 and 2013 NCAA Championships. Prior to coaching the Vols, VanDamme learned the trade under renowned golf instructor Jim McLean. He spent seven years at the Jim McLean Golf School in Palm Springs, Calif., and Traverse City, Mich., becoming the youngest master instructor in school history. VanDamme has worked with PGA Tour players, including as an on-site teaching professional to a participant in the 2009 PGA Championship. He began his collegiate golf career at Marquette before finishing at Northern Michigan, where he graduated in 2000. VanDamme started his tenure under McLean in 1998 while still playing collegiately. He also played professionally on the National Golf Association Hooters Tour in 2003-04. From 2006 to 2009, VanDamme served as athletic director at Mid Peninsula High School in Rock, Mich., also working summers since 2005 with the CVD Golf Academy in Gladstone, Mich. He also served in 2008 as head golf professional at LochenHeath Golf Club in Traverse City. VanDamme and his wife, the former Jill Gobert, are natives of Perkins, Mich., and are the parents of daughters, Madelyn, Claire and Lizzy, and son, Andrew.
COACHING STAFF
Assistant Coach - Maggie Murphy, Second Year Maggie Murphy enters her second season as assistant golf coach at South Dakota State. Murphy came to State after pursuing professional golf status from 2010 to 2012 and most recently played in the 2016 U.S. Women's Mid-Amateur. The Sioux Falls native played in the 2011 U.S. Golf Association Women’s State Team Championship. Competing in the South Dakota Golf Association, Murphy was the 2011 Players Cup Champion, the 2010 Match Play Champion and the 2007 Amateur Champion. Murphy competed in 35 tournaments at New Mexico State from 2006-10, earning National Golf Coaches Association AllAmerican Scholar accolades and All-Western Athletic Confer-
ence Academic honors during her collegiate career. In 2006, Murphy was part of an Aggie team that captured the Price’s Give Em Five Intercollegiate title. Murphy earned a bachelor’s degree in community health at NMSU in 2010 and was a Crimson Scholar.

Brookings Country Club Brookings Country Club, home of the South Dakota State men’s and women’s golf programs, has long been recognized as one of the region’s best courses. The 18-hole, par-72, 6,800-
yard course was designed by Earl Bartling and Ward Waltz. It is characterized by bluegrass greens, which are lush and serene, fairways that are challenging, yet uncrowded, and a rolling terrain.
The Brookings Country Club sits on 167 acres 8 miles southwest of the SDSU campus. It has hosted numerous collegiate events and annually hosts U.S. amateur qualifying events.

South Dakota State University
South Dakota State University (SDSU) is the state’s largest, most comprehensive university. As South Dakota’s 1862 Morrill Act land-grant university, SDSU had a fall 2018 enrollment of 12,107 students from all 50 states and 83 countries. Approximately 54 percent of SDSU students are residents of South Dakota, 39 percent are from other states and 7 percent from other countries. The university provides a rich academic experience in an environment of inclusion and access through inspired, student-centered education, creative activities and research, innovation and engagement. SDSU grants degrees from the colleges of Agriculture, Food and Environmental Sciences; Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences; Education and Human Sciences; Natural Sciences; Nursing; Pharmacy and Allied Health Professions; the Jerome J. Lohr College of Engineering; and the Graduate School. The American Association of University Professors categorizes SDSU as a Category 1 or doctoral-level institution.
The university has been designated an Innovation and Economic Prosperity University by the Association of Public and Land-grant Universities and its Commission on Innovation, Competitiveness and Economic Prosperity is a major resource for the economic development needs of the state. The Office of Technology Transfer and Commercialization, which assists the university’s researchers in commercializing intellectual properties and fosters collaborations between the university and industry partners, has generated nearly $18.5 million in royalties and license fees since being formed. During the last five years, the Office of Technology Transfer and Commercialization has averaged 33 invention disclosures, 12 patents filed, 241 agreements executed, 10 licenses and more than $1.75 million in royalties and revenue per year. SDSU Extension, with eight Regional Extension Centers across the state, is South Dakota’s source for unbiased, research-based information. SDSU Extension’s online learning portal, iGrow.org, served nearly 600,000 users with more than 1.25 million page views last year.
Jackrabbit Legend
Nobody knows for sure where the nickname “Jackrabbits” originates, but several theories exist as to how and why SDSU’s athletic teams became known by that moniker, but former dean H.B. Matthews said in the Jan. 29, 1930, Issue of The Industrial Collegian student newspaper that it started as an emblem for State College between the years of 1898 and 1903. In 1898, the students, under the direction of a professor Kerr, published a college annual called “The Quirt” and since in 1903, the first college annual under the name “Jack Rabbit” made its appearance on campus. Many of the older professors and students during the fiveyear span said that the athletic teams became known as Jackrabbits because of their fleetness of foot in contests or because jackrabbits overran this part of the country at that time. As to the exact date and the exact reason for the name, Matthews said it couldn’t be given, as no record could ever be found of that effect. Some believe that the name “Jackrabbits” came from a story and cartoon sketch that appeared in a Minneapolis newspaper following a 1905 football game between the University of Minnesota and South Dakota State College. Many believe that a reporter for the newspaper, knowing of the preponderance of jackrabbits in the Brookings area, wrote that the SDSU team was as quick as jackrabbits. Many people believe that the school adopted the Jackrabbits as its official nickname from that beginning. The other theory about the origin of the nickname came in “The Jackrabbit,” SDSU’s yearbook. A poem in the 1907 yearbook puts forth the idea that the yearbook is called “The Jackrabbit” because a group of juniors wished to immortalize themselves by changing the name of the yearbook. Athletic teams followed suit, adopting the nickname. Prior to the adoption of the Jackrabbit nickname, fans knew the school athletic teams as the Barn Yard Cadets, which made sense, because the school went by the name of South Dakota State College of Agriculture and Mechanic Arts in 1907. The Jackrabbit can run at speeds of 30-to-35 mph, with bursts up to 45, making it the second fastest animal in North America, second only to the pronghorn antelope, which can run at speeds up to 60 miles. Properly speaking, jackrabbits should not be called rabbits but hares, with longer feet and longer ears than rabbits. Most hares live in open country, whereas rabbits—like cottontails— live in brushy habitats. Jackrabbits can grow up to 2 feet long; weigh from six to nine pounds, with ears up to 8 inches long. Hares do not eat meat; they eat tender herbs in the summer and woody twigs and bark in the winter.

Dr. Barry H. Dunn was named the 20th president of South Dakota State University in April 2016, the fourth alumnus chosen to lead the institution. He assumed office May 23, 2016. Dunn launched the Imagine, 2023, the university’s strategic plan process that launched July 1, 2018. It includes a collaborative and extensive process, reaching out to all corners of South Dakota and renewing the values of the 1862 landgrant mission that founded South Dakota State University. Dunn’s time at SDSU dates to the mid 1970s when he received a bachelor’s degree in biology at SDSU and subsequently completed two graduate degrees in animal science—a master’s in 1977 and a Ph.D. in 2000. He became the South Dakota Corn Utilization Council endowed dean of the College of Agriculture and Biological Sciences in 2010. He also served as director of SDSU Extension and as a professor of animal science. As dean, Dunn led a college with some 550 faculty and staff, 2,800 graduate and undergraduate students, and a $78 million annual budget, including more than $20 million in grant and contract awards, fundraising and development. He shaped the academic and strategic direction of eight departments, spanning 18 degree programs, one regional research and outreach center, six research field stations and 14,500 acres of Agricultural Experiment Station research land. As Extension director, Dunn administered and set the vision for five program areas across two colleges and nine departments, as well as eight regional extension centers with a $12 million annual budget. He led a team of approximately 150 faculty and staff members and 3,500 adult volunteers. Dunn and his wife, Jane, maintain her family’s original homestead north of Brookings where they raised their two sons.

Born in Salem, Ore., and raised in Columbus, Ohio, Sell came to South Dakota State from the University of Northern Iowa, where he worked in various roles, both at the university and in the community for 10 years. He also worked at Villanova University, Syracuse University, Ohio State University and Bowling Green State University. Sell gained further experience working in the private sector for various sports teams and events. Sell earned his bachelor’s degree in sport management from Bowling Green State University (Ohio) in 1991 and completed a master’s degree in physical education/sport administration at The Ohio State University in 1992.
SEAN O’CONNOR
Graduate Assistant Strength & Conditioning Coach Sean O’Connor joined the South Dakota State Strength & Conditioning staff in May 2017 as a graduate assistant strength and conditioning coach. He oversees the implementation of wrestling, men’s and women’s golf and men’s and women’s cross country training programs as well as assist with the Jackrabbit football and baseball teams. Prior to coming to State, O’Connor was at Iowa State University during the 2016-17 season, where he worked with the Cyclones football team. He led walk-ons and junior college transfers through training sessions, teaching foundational movement patterns. O’Connor also worked with injured student-athletes through modified exercises. O’Connor spent part of 2016 at South Dakota School of Mines & Technology, assisting with the football, men’s and women’s track and field, men’s and women’s basketball, volleyball and men’s soccer training programs. O’Connor interned at Northwest Missouri State University from 2014 to 2015. He worked with the men’s and women’s track and field, football, baseball and women’s basketball teams. The Certified a strength and conditioning specialist by National Strength & Conditioning Association, O’Connor graduated from Northwest Missouri State University in 2016 with a corporate wellness degree.

Woody Dahl joined the Jackrabbits staff in August 2015 after a two-year hiatus from the SDSU program for a graduate assistantship. Dahl’s main responsibilities include working with the men’s basketball and men’s and women’s golf programs while assisting with oversight of the athletic training program and SDSU’s other 19 varsity sports. An Albert Lea, Minn., native, Dahl graduated from South Dakota State in 2013 with a bachelor’s degree in athletic training before moving to Western Michigan for two years, where he was a graduate assistant and earned his master’s degree for athletic training in 2015. Dahl is BOC, CPR/First Aid and Rock Tape FMT I and II certified in addition to being a NATA member.
