Adaptive reuse refers to the process of reusing an existing building for a purpose other than which it was originally built or designed for. It is also known as recycling and conversion.

SOUND
Within KL there are quite an amount of building that have been going through adaptive reuse method in order to kept the history of the building yet make the building functionable again.
From reading through the book called Experiencing Architecture by Steen Eiler Rasmussen I felt interest in exploring the quality of sound.

CASE STUDY
Case study poster representing each site.
SENTUL WORK
Sentul Work current is not being occupied therefore the quality of sound there are more quiet. The wall design are thick enough to prevent unwanted sound for the KTM to affect the worker within the building.
The Row KL
The Row is a street of building all being renovated and are having café and such for now. The sound of nature can be heard clearly but the traffic is quite loud here.
Zhongshan Building
This is the best acoustic quality within the three building. It had the quiet of within the shop with so gentle music and some crowd noise within the café area as well as trees rattling.
BUKIT NANAS
Bukit Nanas is known to be one of the earliest Malay settlements in Kuala Lumpur and the center of Malay power there. In around 1857, Raja Abdullah of Klang raised funds to open tin mines in the Ampang area, and in doing so, initiating the development of Kuala Lumpur as a major settlement on banks of the Klang River that would serve the mines further inland.
ST. JOHN CHURCH HISTORY
This is the second church that had a pipe organ installed in the early 20th century. St John's Cathedral, was laid on 28 March, 1954. That year also saw the ordination of the First Bishop of Kuala Lumpur, Rev Father Dominic Vendargon.
The new building was officially opened on 8 January 1955, replacing the second Church of St John the Evangelist. In August of 1955, this church became the See of the Bishop of Kuala Lumpur with Bishop Dominic Vendargon as the first local bishop of the newly created Diocese of Kuala Lumpur.
In 1962, this church was consecrated and its status elevated to that of a Cathedral with Rev Fr Edward Limat as the first Vicar General and Parish Priest. Thereafter the building became popularly known as St John’s Cathedral. St John’s Cathedral is today a whitewashed modern cathedral with twin spires, located close to the colonial heart of Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.

UNDERGOING ADAPTIVE REUSE
The building that are going to be under this project is an old church next to the current St John Church located at Bukit Nanas.
LOCATION
The site is located in Jalan Bukit Nanas next to Jalan Ampang. It is also around Godown KL.
HISTORICAL BUILDING
Bukit Nanas also contain an eco-forest which is a rare site in KL where there are still many greens located within KL. Here also contain lots of historical building such as masjid jamek, Sultan abdul samad building, Muzuem telekom, convent schools etc.

SOUND ZONING
When I take about city, what will be coming to your mind first? Is it the high rise or the bustling sound? For wat I am going to study about are the sound within the city. As u can see from this plan, I located various type of sound and the distance that can be heard of it.
During the studies I realise that there are plenty of sound unique to this site only. Like the bell sound coming for the bell tower of the church, prayer sound coming from the masjid, nature sound of the eco-forest as well as students chattering coming from the schools. I know this sound can also be found elsewhere, but this sound is the outstanding one over those noisy traffics.

INTERVENTION
From the sound zoning I have located the location to place my interventions.
MUSEUM
For the site is the main programme where museum and a gathering space will be held as it is one of the quieter spots as it is bearer of with a roll of building toward the main street.
ACCOMADATION
Accommodation building will be on the empty parking lot where it can be easily from the main road.

SOUND PAVILION
Next a pavilion is placed next to the eco forest replacing the abandon building that existing there.
FOOD STREET
While visiting the site, I have also realised that there are hawkers stand located on this section of the road which is then giving me the idea of creating a food street along the back alley as the current state of the alley way is only for parking and is some what no safe to walk because of the road condition. This proposer will make the streets a little lively as well as providing the locals a proper place to sell but also improving the condition of the road itself.

SUPPORTIVE INTERVENTION
From the sound zoning I have located the location to place my interventions.
OVERHEAD BRIDGE
Provide better access from Masjid Jamek Station.

CHAMBER OF TIME

Site Zoning
The site is separate using the sound quality of the programme introduced. Therefore two zone are being identified within the site:
Zone A
Zone A is a quiet site as it is surrounded by a roll of buildings from the main road which is Jalan Ampang. Due to the acoustic quality the programme that are being place here is library, museum, office and theatre hall.
Zone B
Zone B is the parking lot next to the main road therefore it is more accessible by the public which is a suitable location to place accommodation here so that not just the visitors can used but the tourists as well.
PROJECT 3_Chamber of Time_ Design Development
ZONE A
Zone A is a quiet site as it is surrounded by a roll of buildings from the main road which is Jalan Ampang. Due to the acoustic quality the programme that are being place here is library, museum, office and theatre hall.
ZONING WITHIN
As u enter the site u will notice a garden area and a pathway linking towards the centre point in between the two blocks of building. The lobby is located here because I wanted people to have easier access to all the facilities provided. And the programme provided within the site is differential by zoning as well. Similar from before I also separate the zone to two type quiet and with slight noise. For the quiet zone there located the old church building which is the one for adaptive and reuse. it repurposes to a theatre due to the acoustic quality of a church should have and how some prayer can be like a musical while they sing. Located within this zone also contain the museum that talk about the history of the site with the help of sound. Then for the public zone held the offices, library, public area as well as m&e.
THEATRE
Old church is one of the building undergoing adaptive reuse therefore I decide to kept the façade.
Then raised the room to best suit the roof height of a theatre.
The raised part is then using a different material compart to the original white plaster façade to show the difference between old and new. In this case brick is the one I explore with.
ZONE B BUILDING(YOUTH HALL, LIBRARY AND M&E BUILDING)
The administration office building is also undergoing adaptive reuse.
Lower the M&E building to help give view from the parking to view the library directly.
Dividing the building into two part. The front part will be the part that is kept with the original façade and the back will undergo changes.
Material of the library building is changed to raw brick façade so that it give a contrast to the old administration building giving the sense of old and new.
Further divide the building to separate the building into library and M&E building.
PROJECT 3_Chamber of Time_ Form development
MUSEUM
Start by shaping in a cuboid to provide a better view to the front.
Floor level moving up like spiral to mimic the evolution chain diagram which in fact able to tell time.
Lower down the base to create a basement to mimic a cave-like experience within the museum.
Removing some part of the top and having the end opening facing toward the church to provide bell sound from the church to be a part of the exhibit.
Open a center well to provide ventilation to the building and providing a courtyard zoning.
Bottom floor center is moved inward to create the entrance of the museum and for second floor open is facing toward the schools to help focus on the sound..
PROJECT
MUSEUM PROGRAMME DIAGRAM
for the museum, it is talking about the history of the site like the mines, the churches as well civil war and World War 2. The design of the building itself is to refer to the shape of the evolution chain where the old is for the bottom and the latest will be located at the top. And because of the programme involved the support of sound therefore I wall up all 4side of the building to reduces the sound for the outside to affect the result too much. Then opening a centre well within the building to provide the necessary ventilation and like to enter the building. Later, extending some me part of the building with opening to focus on view and sound that was from the church and schools.
