A MESSAGE FROM OUR CHAIRMAN From a one-room kindergarten in 1998 to a National Blue Ribbon School in 2018, the theme of being anchored by His promises reminds us that we can trust Him in all circumstances.

As I enter my second year as the Chairman of the Board at MBCA, I’ve noticed how dynamic a school is. A school is an ever-changing organization that sees new kids, new families, and new staff every year, while also saying goodbye to families, staff, and kids every year.

I confess that I’m a worrier. So, I was worried about too much change. How do we keep the mission and vision if the staff and leadership change? New kids and parents are unknown to us, and how do we know that students who just graduated or moved can be replaced? My board rotates a third of its trustees off every year, so how do we maintain continuity?

I’ve learned a few things through this journey. One is that change increases our faith. “Now faith is confidence in what we hope for and assurance about

what we do not see.” Hebrews 11:1.

Without change, our faith rests more in our efforts and our provision.

Second, without change there wouldn’t be opportunity. I love how The Message translates 1 Corinthians 9:8, “God can pour on the blessings in astonishing ways so that you’re ready for anything and everything, more than just ready to do what needs to be done.” Without change, we don’t give God a chance to show off by astonishing us with blessings beyond what we would expect and plan for.

MBCA is a living and breathing organization that has seen God’s blessings and provision for over 20 years. From a one-room kindergarten in 1998, to a National Blue Ribbon School in 2018, the theme of being anchored by His promises reminds us that we can trust Him in all

circumstances. In 2018-2019, God certainly blessed us again with a community whose generosity allowed us to dream boldly and achieve mightily.

WELCOME HOME, MS. VICE

There are certain landmark moments along a young school's journey as it begins to mature. These range from first faculty retirements to an inaugural graduating class, and in its 21st year of existence, MBCA was blessed to see both of these and more. But one such landmark, the first hiring of a graduate, had long eluded us.

Joyfully, the Academy announced last winter that Ms. Lindsay Vice '10 had accepted an offer to join the middle school teaching staff. As a student, Lindsay’s time at Mt. Bethel was marked by excellence in whatever she set her hand to. As she transitioned to high school and college, that excellence continued.

After graduating from the University of Georgia with a degree in Mathematics Education, Lindsay knew exactly where she wanted to be.

"When I set out on my job search for a teaching position, I knew Mt. Bethel Christian Academy was without a doubt at the top of my list," she said. "My time there as a K-8 student was truly special, in a way that words alone can’t completely describe. I loved the teachers, the encouraging community, and the instant love that I felt every time I walked through the front doors. Mt. Bethel feels like home to me."

God’s hand is in this opportunity, and we look forward to seeing how He uses Ms. Vice to teach and to nurture our middle schoolers.

"Knowing that I have the opportunity to be the same mentor to my students that my own MBCA teachers were to me gives me so much hope and excitement for this school year," said Lindsay. "In the months I’ve spent back here, I’ve seen that the love that makes MBCA truly special is more prevalent than ever, and I’m so honored to be a part of such a remarkable community."

ANNUAL FUND CHAIR LETTER

Dear MBCA Family, We can hardly believe the 2018-2019 school year is behind us, giving us an opportunity to reflect on all the ways the Lord has been faithful to the ministry of Mt. Bethel Christian Academy.

It was an honor and privilege for our family to experience this year as your Annual Fund chairs as we served our sweet school with families we have known for many years, while also getting to know some of our newest. Together, we all participated, gave generously and sacrificially to exceed our goal, and ensured our children will continue to grow in an academic environment where Christ is central in all we do.

We are grateful that from the classroom to the athletic fields, stage, and the hallways in between, our children are being equipped to be successful in using their God-given talents, while being nurtured with grace and love from junior kindergarten all the way to our senior year.

Our view from the “front row” had us applauding our youngest students who memorized the truth of Scriptures, alongside our award-winning lower school artists, Presidential fitness award winners, and spelling bee champs. Their talents shined brightly, not only within the walls of our school, but in every arena and stage where they participated.

Middle school was anything but middle of the road, as they stewarded successful mission collections for ministries in our community and abroad. Their faith in action was demonstrated in championship titles on the athletic field, and even in defeat when they were gracious in hard lessons learned. Our Duke TIP scholars, National Junior Honor Society inductees, and Honor Roll achievers have exceeded our previous roll calls, and all in an attitude of humility and thankfulness that can often elude this age group.

Scholarship students and athletes, apologists for Jesus Christ, worship

leaders, AP scholars, and STEM honorees round out our oldest and wisest students.

The Upper School is overflowing with students as we close in on capacity of our original buildings. Our oldest and brightest are leaving well prepared for college and beyond, with a concrete faith foundation in an environment that has stayed true to the original mission of our beautiful school: a Christ-centered education that develops and encourages academic excellence, spiritual growth, and a lifelong love and desire for learning.

These achievements and so many more happen every year at MBCA because of the families who serve, give of their time and talents, and pray for our Lord’s favor on our “little” yellow school.

GEORGIA GOAL DONORS Mt. Bethel Christian Academy partners with Georgia GOAL, a Student Scholarship Organization (SSO) created through the Georgia Private School Tax Credit Program. By encouraging Georgia taxpayers to redirect a portion of their state income tax to MBCA, GOAL provides funding for qualified students in need of tuition assistance. Specifically, GOAL funding is allocated for deserving public school students who are new to Mt. Bethel.

Thank you to the individuals listed below for bringing $312,950 in scholarship money to MBCA. The GOAL program furthers MBCA’s ability to fulfill its Christian mission. Financial aid continues to be of great importance to the Academy, and these dollars are a critical component of the Academy's life-changing tuition-assistance initiatives.

• Security cameras at the North Campus • Teacher grants: Parent Council will offer two grants to teachers applying for higher learning, hands-on experiences that will introduce new concepts to their classrooms.

ADVENTURES IN LIBRARY LAND

Second-grade students shared Library time with furry friends in 2018-2019.

Throughout the year, Canine Assistants volunteers brought service dogs-intraining to the Academy in what was a beneficial partnership for the dogs and students.

When Mrs. Smallwood, Library Coordinator, heard about Canine Assistants from an MBCA family, she immediately decided MBCA had to be a part of their reading program. Canine Assistants is an organization that places service and companion dogs with people who have mobility difficulties, type I diabetes, epilepsy, and other medical needs. They also place facility dogs who provide therapy and intervention services to children and adults.

Socializing the animals and exposing them to different groups of people is important to their training.

Each week, when a dog and its handler visited MBCA, students took turns reading out loud with the dogs as attentive members of the audience.

Canine Assistants believes that children who are uncomfortable reading in front of their peers, for fear that they might make a mistake, are quite at ease reading in front of a dog.

“I loved this activity because it helped build confidence in the students, and it took the nervousness out of reading in front of others because it was a fun and non-judgemental setting,” said Mrs. Smallwood. “I especially loved seeing the students offer a little help to their friend reading if they got hung up on a word or two. I hope this program is the start of a beautiful relationship with Canine Assistants and the amazing work they do for the community!”

The Academy enjoyed other (non-furry) visitors at the Library last year as part

of Mrs. Smallwood’s visiting authors series. To encourage creative writing and have fun with the writing process, Mrs. Smallwood invited several authors from different genres to share their works.

Students were able to hear from awardwinning children’s historical fiction author Jenny Cote; Jonathan D. Miller, who writes and illustrates The Adventures of Sammy the Wonder Dachshund series; and young adult fiction newcomer Kirsten Leigh, author of Believe.

“We read books every day with little thought of the work that goes into actually creating a book,” said Mrs. Smallwood. “The series of author visits was encouraging, exciting, and inspiring for the kids to see the process authors or illustrators take to bring their ideas, their dreams, and their pages to life.”

An encouraging side effect was drawing MBCA’s own authors-to-be out of hiding as a result of the time they spent with these special visitors. “We had quite a few budding authors come out of these events that loved participating in our Author's Cafe at the end of the year,” said Mrs. Smallwood. “I hope I can continue to host these events as an inspiration to our students that they, too, can be authors, illustrators, and creators.”

PATHWAYS

By purposeful design, Mt. Bethel is a preparatory school, and all of our students are working toward the same destination: college. That said, we know every child is uniquely and wonderfully made by God and reflects His image.

That uniqueness means that, although their destination is the same, our students may take different paths to reach a common end.

To better support that effort and ensure all Academy students are celebrated for their individual talents, the Pathways program was created in 2018 to provide supplementary help for students in grades 1 - 8 in the areas of executive functioning, mathematics, reading, and language arts.

In its first year, the program garnered high praise from students and parents.

With limited class sizes, OrtonGillingham instruction, and highly individualized attention paid to each student, Pathways quickly proved to be a stellar addition to the Academy's awardwinning approach to learning. Because of this, Pathways has now expanded to allow students in grades 9 - 12 to enroll in the Directed Studies arm of the program. In this path, Upper School students learn time management, organization, and study skills, including test-taking strategies for both individual subjects and collegepreparatory standardized testing.

What does a Pathways student look like?

Pathways students have diagnosed and recognized learning challenges, but are able to be academically successful in and out of their selected Pathways classes.

They are held to the same high standards of academic excellence as their peers, but in a maximized learning environment that teaches them the skills they need to be successful. By addressing the students' areas of need, they are able to gain confidence along with their skills, resulting in increased independence and ownership of their own learning.

MBCA has received a chapter of the National Junior Honor Society (NJHS), a national organization established to recognize outstanding middle school students. More than just an academic honor society, NJHS honors students who demonstrate excellence in the areas of scholarship, leadership, service, character, and

citizenship. Seventh and eighth-grade students attaining a 95% numeric average on core academic, year-long classes are eligible.

MBCA: A 2018 NATIONAL BLUE RIBBON SCHOOL

In its 21st year, the Academy had great cause for jubilation as it was recognized by the Department of Education as a 2018 National Blue Ribbon School. Mt. Bethel is in elite company as one of only 49 private schools in the nation to be so awarded, selected for being in the top 15 percent nationally for excellence in reading and mathematics. According to the Department of Education, “These schools serve as examples for other schools throughout the nation."

On October 1, 2018, U.S. Secretary of Education Betsy DeVos recognized 300 public schools and 49 independent schools as 2018 National Blue Ribbon Schools. Mt. Bethel Christian Academy was selected as the only school – public or private – in Cobb County.

Specifically, Mt. Bethel was recognized in the category of Exemplary High Performing Schools. Exemplary High Performing Schools are among their state’s highest performing schools as measured by state assessments or nationally normed tests. MBCA was recognized in this category for its many years of sustained academic excellence.

“I am pleased to celebrate with you as your school is named a National Blue Ribbon School,” said Secretary DeVos in a video message. “We recognize and honor your important work in preparing students for successful careers and meaningful lives.

On November 8, Mr. Callis and Mrs. Kelly attended the 2018 National Blue Ribbon School recognition ceremony in Washington D.C. Also in November, the Blue Bell Ice Cream company treated students, faculty, and staff to ice cream during lunch in celebration of MBCA's blue ribbon designation. What a sweet treat!

In February 2019, State Representative Sharon Cooper (R – Marietta) publicly recognized Mt. Bethel’s achievement in a Georgia State Legislative Session. Mr. Callis and four students attended the session. It was a memorable day in the House chambers, made even more special by a bonus visit with Arthur Blank and

BLUE RIBBON RECOGNITION SOCIET Y (+$1) One of many ways MBCA celebrated its selection as a 2018 National Blue Ribbon School was with the creation of the Blue Ribbon Recognition Society. WORLD DOMINATION

In 2018-2019, MBCA expanded its global presence thanks to the successes enjoyed by the Upper School’s FTC (First Tech Challenge) Robotics Team #10219, Batteries Not Included, and the Upper School Bass Fishing Team.

In its fourth season, and for the second year in a row, Batteries Not Included competed over four days in Houston, TX, at the FTC Worlds Competition. When all was said and done, BNI ranked in the top 16 in a season that started in September 2018 with more than 6,000 teams. Their experience in Houston included more than 15,000 students competing while being cheered for by more than 30,000 spectators.

While Robotics was busy dominating on dry land, two Upper School students were conquering the water. An incredible spring earned Brooks Anderson and David Britt spots at the National Championship in July on Lake Pickwick (Florence, AL).

MBCA was one of 215 teams competing alongside the best high school teams from across the United States and foreign teams from as far away as Zimbabwe.

After three intense days of competition,

MBCA finished 9th at the National Championship, which earned them a spot at Worlds.

At the World Finals, the top 12 finishers were eligible for an incredible $2.7 million in college scholarships. MBCA finished 10th! Rising seniors Brooks Anderson and David Britt were offered scholarships from Simpson University (California) and Kentucky Christian University.

Eagle Nation is so proud of Brooks and David! It is exciting how quickly they put MBCA on the map in the competitive bass fishing arena.
