MBCA Family and Friends,
MBCA Family and Friends,
We were driving along a familiar road shortly after our then seven-year-old son received glasses for the first time. He was giddy with excitement as he noticed detail he didn’t realize even existed. He had seen trees out the car window before, but he had never noticed their leaves. He had seen flags waving in the wind, but hadn’t realized they were emblazoned with the logo of his favorite football team. He had seen the neon sign of the supermarket before but never knew it was displaying the name of the store. “Look!” he shouted with enthusiasm time and time again, awed by the beauty of what he was seeing, and impressed with the information he could now discover on his own. This newfound clarity of vision changed everything.
This has been a year of newfound clarity. Our vision was focused, and details came to light that were previously unclear. Through a collaborative process, we determined our next steps as a school and completed a comprehensive strategic plan outlining our goals in the following eight areas: Academic Development, Spiritual Development, Enrollment, Advancement, Finances, Cocurriculars, Personnel, and Facilities.
Just one short year later, we’re revising this plan because so many of our goals have already been met or are well underway and need to be revised upwards. That’s the result of a clear vision, one that has been purposefully committed to the LORD (Proverbs 16:3). An entire community, with clarity of vision, can accomplish so much together!
In this publication, you will hear stories and see reports that highlight this exciting reality, and we can celebrate all those who have contributed so much to accomplishing our vision. We’re growing, building, raising funds, enhancing programs, developing personnel, and so much more – all to achieve our mission of academic excellence, spiritual growth, and lifelong love and desire for learning. What a wonderful community, and what a blessing to celebrate this vision coming alive in front of our eyes!
Blessings,
Dr. Jim Cianca Head of School
Dear MBCA Family,
Thank you for your generous and faithful giving to the 2023-2024 Annual Fund! It was incredible to witness the impact that so many MBCA families made this year. Our children are truly surrounded by a strong, committed community that seeks to put Christ first in all we do.
Being a part of this school community has been a blessing to our family. When we first toured the campus, we knew instantly that this was the school for our children. Eight years ago, our oldest started as a kindergartener at MBCA. Nine years from now, our youngest will graduate from MBCA. As we approach the halfway point of our family’s time on MBCA’s campus, we are more confident than ever that the spiritual and educational impact from this school, the community, and the incredible faculty and staff will last a lifetime.
The growth of MBCA is evident as we welcome more new families to both MBCA campuses than ever before, and the Upper School reaches its largest enrollment to date. All of this growth is happening while maintaining small class sizes, employing a dedicated group of educators, and growing our academic and athletic programs. We truly see God at work every day in countless ways through this school as it prepares our children to go out into the world possessing a strong relationship with Christ and a lifelong love of learning that will enrich and empower them for the future.
It was an honor to serve as the Annual Fund Chairs. We can’t thank you enough for your generous gifts and enthusiastic participation. Your commitment to ensuring that our children will continue to grow in an academic environment where Christ is central in all we do is inspiring. We want to give a special thank you to our Annual Fund volunteers, who worked tirelessly in supporting the fundraising efforts throughout the year by reaching out to your peers and explaining the importance of the Annual Fund. We sincerely appreciate your commitment and your time!
In closing, may God bless each of your families and our school. Opportunity abounds at MBCA as the love of Christ fills the classrooms. We cannot wait to see what the future holds for our school, our faculty and staff, each of your families and, most importantly, each of our precious children!
With Sincere Gratitude,
Erin & Jason Essary

When I joined the Academy staff 11 years ago, the Upper School was not yet a reality. Celebrating the 10th anniversary of its opening day this August was so rewarding. My kids were little back in 2014, but they understood the excitement! My son asked me many times, “Mommy, when the high school is done, will a college be next?” He was hopeful he would never have to leave MBCA! While “MBCAU” is not in the works, the growth of our Upper School and the continued excellence of our programs in all three divisions is truly inspiring. What a blessing to be here.
The 2023-2024 school year brought many celebrations. Our first-ever home football game on Arrow Field saw an opening drive touchdown, we welcomed back our beloved Becky to the front desk and praised God for her recovery, and we broke ground on a fantastic new facility at the Upper School – just to name a few. Most importantly, we sent another group of graduates out into the world, armed with a truly Christ-centered education. Since 2018, MBCA has graduated 246 exceptional young men and women. The impact those individuals will have on society thanks to their firm foundation of faith is immeasurable, and you help make this possible.
Our Annual Fund volunteers are listed in this publication, and I am grateful for the sacrifices of their time and energy. They worked hard to make the 2023-2024 Annual Fund campaign a massive success, directly benefiting each and every student. A special thank you to Erin and Jason Essary for chairing our 2023-2024 campaign. Your commitment to Christian education and MBCA’s mission is inspiring! We are blessed to be your school home.
Huge thanks as well to Shannon and Carlton Walstad for their continued leadership as chairs for the Building Up Capital Campaign. I cannot wait to welcome everyone to the grand opening of the T. Scott Calvert Student Center in 2025! We are so blessed by the Walstad family for their commitment to MBCA through this important time of growth and development.
The MBCA family is the best, and I am eager to continue working alongside the talented faculty, staff, and parents who make the Academy the amazing place it is. My sincere gratitude, especially, to Jen Collier and Shannon Smallwood; I am so proud of our team!
Thank you for all you do to help us provide opportunities and purpose for our children.
With gratitude,
Alison Stephens Director of Advancement

Bethel Christian Academy’s Athletic Association kicked off 2023-2024 with its signature event, The Eagle Open Golf Tournament at Indian Hills Country Club, and wrapped the year with the second Annual Round Eagle Pickleball Tournament at Atlanta Country Club. The Athletics Association is blessed and proud to bring our community together in support of the Academy’s coaches and student athletes for another year of Eagles athletic excellence.
The Athletic Association is the fundraising and volunteer arm of MB athletics. In the past few years, over $200,000 was contributed by the MBAA to purchase non-budget items for our athletic teams and to support development of athletics facilities. MBAA members also annually contribute over 1,000 volunteer hours to help our athletic events run smoothly, from ticketing to concessions to program banquets.
All Academy families in grades 5th through 12th are automatically registered to enjoy membership privileges in the MBAA, but it is open to all. If you would like to find a way to get involved as a member, volunteer, or sponsor, please reach out to Cal Boyd, Athletic Director, at cal.boyd@mtbethelchristian.org. Go Eagles!

Parent Council’s Spring Fling is the Academy’s largest fundraising event, and it is always a fabulous time. The 2024 event, hosted March 2 at the Atlanta Country Club, did not disappoint! Entitled the Regatta Gala, the evening was designed to raise important funds for the school while celebrating how every hand on deck contributes to fulfilling the Academy’s mission. The motto, “Sails Up,” and theme verse, Psalm 93:4, are a testament to the power of faith, teamwork, and the guiding presence of Christ in our lives. “Mightier than the waves of the sea is His love for you.”
Guests gathered in a variety of nautical and sailorthemed attire while enjoying dinner, fellowship, and spirited bidding on a wide variety of live and silent auction items: fabulous vacation homes, tickets to all kinds of sporting events and shows, memorabilia, a Goldendoodle puppy, tuition freeze, unlimited ASP, and plenty of other MBCA exclusives!
The auction, instabuys, and sponsorships raised $180,189 for MBCA! Thank you, Parent Council, for putting together a truly wonderful evening. We are especially grateful for the Ways & Means Chairs, Allie Arnold and Lauren Holcomb, for their leadership.
Mark your calendars for Spring Fling 2025 at a new venue, Cherokee Country Club, on Saturday, March 22!

Corporations of all sizes help are helping Mt. Bethel Christian Academy make a significant and lasting impact in our classrooms through their participation in matching gift programs. Many businesses offer programs that match a portion or the full amount of a gift made to MBCA by their employees, spouses, and retirees. Please contact Jen Collier in the Advancement Office at Jennifer.Collier@mtbethelchristian.org with any questions about securing a matching gift, or visit the Matching Gifts section of our website on the Support page.

In April, our seventh graduating class participated in Signing Day ‘24. In front of their parents, peers, coaches, and teachers, five seniors put pen to paper and committed to extend their athletic career at the collegiate level. Congratulations to:
Abigail Bell, attending Reinhardt College for Track & Field; Ansley Brooks, attending Reinhardt College for Lacrosse; Cole Buker, attending Lasell University for Basketball; Katie Cummings, attending Covenant College for Tennis; Will Kuimjian, attending Wheaton College for Basketball
In the last seven years, MBCA has had 24 athletes commit to play in college – over 10% of all our graduates – far exceeding the national average. With a robust football program developing, and state-of-the-art facilities under construction, this number will continue to climb. It’s an exciting time to be an Eagle!
Congratulations to our commits! Eagle Nation will always be in your cheering section!

She’s back! January 8, 2024, saw the return of Mrs. Becky Bechtel to our Lower & Middle School Campus. It was such a blessing for students, faculty, staff, and parents to, literally, roll out the red carpet for Ms. Becky and her much-anticipated return to the front desk. Ms. Becky is the first person our students and visitors encounter, and her absence for 369 days was felt by all.
After a shocking diagnosis in January 2023, Ms. Becky, receptionist at the Lower & Middle Schools Campus, stepped away from her duties at MBCA for the fight of her life. We cheered each of her victories during treatment, knowing that she was one step closer to returning. She is a mighty Eagle indeed.

Thank you to our MBCA community who supported The Bechtel family with prayers, cards, meals, and more this past year. What a difference your love and encouragement made to Becky and her family. Becky and her husband, Todd, are parents to Olivia, MBCA Class of 2021.
“I cannot describe how much you all mean to me,” said Becky. “My red carpet arrival certainly started this year off much better than last. That was truly an incredible surprise, and I am so grateful for each of you. I know you waited in the cold for a long time for me!”
If you couldn’t tell from the chauffeured vehicle, police escort, streamers, confetti, flowers, balloons, signs, tiara, sash, red carpet, 600+ welcoming committee, hugs, and tears, we are so happy to have her back “home” at MBCA!
The Georgia GOAL Scholarship Program continues to make a huge impact in the lives of students and families at Mt. Bethel Christian Academy. In the 2023–2024 school year, 80 students received tuition assistance through the Georgia GOAL program. Without GOAL, these students would not have been able to receive the high-quality, Christ-centered education provided at MBCA. This was made possible thanks to the 140 individuals, couples, and businesses listed here who deferred their state of Georgia income tax dollars to support Academy students through the Georgia GOAL Scholarship Program.
Please continue to encourage your family, friends, and neighbors to participate in the GOAL program. You are going to pay Georgia taxes anyway, so why not defer those dollars to help qualified students receive a Christ-centered education at MBCA?

Before the disruptions caused by the pandemic in 2020, MBCA middle school students and faculty enjoyed a beloved Capstone Trip tradition: Sixth grade took a milestone trip to our nation’s capital, seventh grade prepared locally for mission work, and eighth grade culminated middle school with a mission trip. Due to travel restrictions, these trips were temporarily shelved. But, during the 2022-2023 school year, all three grades were able to participate in the D.C. trip, and the 20232024 school year allowed us all to get back on track. Eighth graders were able to take their mission trip, this time to Phoenix, Arizona.
Students spent the week serving Native American communities and exploring the beautiful southwest. The trip began at the Mt. Claret Retreat Center at the base of Camelback Mountain. The day was filled with devotions, prayer, and focusing on how God could use the students during their time with the native people.
Day Two began at the Salt River Maricopa Indian Community, where students visited with senior citizens and built box gardens. This land is very important to the people, and providing a sustainable place to garden helps them live off the land. Students then traveled to the Community Center to assemble bags of
toiletries for families in need, and explored the rich tapestry of Phoenix. The evening ended with stargazing at Gilbert Observatory.
Day three began with worship, then moved to the Fort McDowell Yavapai Reservation preschool where students took care of yard work and maintenance. That evening’s reward was a Phoenix Suns game!
The final day was at Fort McDowell for yard work, cleaning, and organizing. The students then partnered with Feed My Starving Children to pack 8,880 meals in an hour! The trip concluded with a chuckwagon dinner, recreation time, worship, and the reading of letters that families had sent to their students.
The students arrived home tired but fulfilled, with closer bonds with one another, and new understanding of how different cultures live. Capstone trips truly are one way that middle school at MBCA is unique.
“Truly I tell you, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers and sisters of mine, you did for me.”
MATTHEW 25:40
That’s a wrap! On April 29, nearly 400 members of the MBCA community came together to support the first-ever Eagle Wings Student Christian Film Festival, hosted at the Upper School.
Eagle Wings, open to filmmakers all over the country, exists to facilitate community, learning, and encouragement among student filmmakers seeking to glorify God in their craft, and is one of the very few film festivals showcasing Christian works anywhere in the country. The festival received 212 entries in categories including: short films, screenplays, music videos, and commercials/public service announcements. Prizes were awarded in each category. Students, families, VIPs, and others walked the red carpet to join this extraordinary event. They experienced an incredible night championing our student filmmakers and their families, from actor Justin Sterner’s inspiring keynote speech about the importance of being excellent for God, to all of the phenomenal student film entries that lit up the big screen.
Four Hollywood judges shared their unique insights and expertise into the creative process, while four Academy administrators announced the winners of the very first “Birdy” awards. The wide variety of submissions gave the audience plenty of opportunities to cheer, sing along, clap, shed some tears, and enjoy freshly-popped popcorn.
It was truly an inspiring evening for our Film Academy students and all those who attended. Congratulations to Mr. Stephen Burton, Director of the Film Academy, for bringing this vision to life. Please plan to join us for an even bigger and better event in April 2025 - all for the glory of God!
A huge thank you to our Category Sponsors Spindle & Oak, Legacy Living Real Estate , Jerry Sorrels/GEICO, our Assistant Director, and all of our Production Assistants.
The chilly, gray weather did nothing to dampen the mood at Mt. Bethel Christian Academy’s Student Center Groundbreaking Ceremony on February 29, 2024. It was an extra special Leap Year to be sure! The excited community gathered to commemorate not only dirt being moved at the Academy’s Upper School campus on Post Oak Tritt Road in Marietta, but the celebration of a mission that transforms lives and prepares students for life and eternity.
Attendees took in a varsity soccer game and enjoyed food, games, and a shovel ceremony to kick off the construction of the muchanticipated 20,000 square foot Student Center, a multipurpose hub for students, staff, and families on campus. This facility, due to be completed in June 2025, will house state-ofthe-art athletics facilities, including cold plunge pools, health and wellness space, concessions, a press box, additional classrooms, office space, an event hall, and a balcony overlooking the
recently constructed competition turf field. Arrow Field has become the favorite site for competitive sports like lacrosse, soccer, and a quickly growing football program.
Construction of the Student Center marks the completion of the $8.7 million phase one of the Building Up Capital Campaign. With new programs, robust enrollment, and the consolidation of elements from two campuses into one, a $40 million expansion will include new academic buildings, STEM and fine arts spaces, new dining facilities, a new performance gym, and more. The impact of these facilities is transformational, putting tools in the hands of our teachers and coaches to bring the mission alive – combining excellence with spiritual growth in both their athletic and academic pursuits.
Please plan to join us for a ribbon-cutting ceremony next year; it’s a great time to be an Eagle!
