“Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own.”
MATTHEW 6:34
Greetings, Mt. Bethel,
It is my pleasure to present the 2019-2020 Annual Report, All In. I believe that God smiles upon what we’ve accomplished together throughout this past year. Our entire community should take pride in the manner with which God led us through uncertainty and adversity to begin this school year with record enrollment and remarkable financial health.
This summer, with your help, we sent out an incredibly resilient class of graduates. The class of 2020 has an unparalleled level of heritage at MBCA. So many of this group attended MBCA throughout their entire education. Others, though coming later in their journey, made indelible impressions on a growing Upper School program as established and excelling. God be praised! They are well prepared to take risks, seek greatness, and stand for Christ. I, and the whole community, am so proud of them. They are our best legacy, a future generation equipped for faithfulness and creative thinking that our world so desperately needs.
Mt. Bethel Christian Academy is a special place. My twenty-two years of Christian school experience have provided many examples. MBCA enjoys unique and outstanding levels of support from parents, faculty, staff, and the whole of Mt. Bethel Church. We are also marked by an incredible student body. They are intelligent, diligent, compassionate, gifted, and full of character. Your family is important to us and vital to our community. I trust our many new families are already feeling the blessings of this wonderful reality. We are so
thankful you’re with us. As a parent, you can be assured that your staff is diligently committed to the 20202021 school year and is willing to personally sacrifice to be here for you and your children. This is a natural point in the year when we learn from what occurred in the last year and prepare for commitments and efforts for the coming year.
Your generous participation in our Annual Fund and other community efforts relays a strong message about the success of Mt. Bethel Christian Academy. The names of so many supporters appear in this report. Each one has powerfully invested in our sacred calling and the extraordinary efforts that take place within our classrooms. I am most

Dear Mt. Bethel Family,
The 2019-2020 school year was my seventh year at Mt. Bethel Christian Academy, and I have had children here even longer than that. I love the sense of community that we all share. I couldn’t even talk about it in our staff meeting without crying! I was so grateful to be able to encourage my colleagues to participate in the 2019-2020 Annual Fund. What an honor to help lead faculty and staff to 100% participation!
I feel blessed to work here, and have my children attend school here, and feel the love that comes from everyone in the building. I am grateful that we all work together, teach others about Jesus, and focus on God in our studies.
The 2019-2020 year was not a typical year, but I was impressed with the leadership and guidance given to us all as we switched to virtual learning the last few months of school. I was not at all surprised with how well our staff and families
I feel blessed to work here and have my children attend school here and feel the love that comes from everyone in the building. I am grateful that we all work together, teach others about Jesus, and focus on God in our studies.
came together to support each other during an unprecedented time! The whole experience just reminded me that I have always seen the teachers and administrators give so much to our students. And, every year, I witness parents and families go above and beyond to support their children. This past year just looked a little different. What wasn’t different was that we were a team working hard to ensure the children had everything they needed to be successful and engaged all the way through the last day of school.
I am overjoyed to be back in the classroom with our precious students. Watching the children worship and grow in their relationships with Jesus is such a rewarding experience.
May God continue to bless our school,
Ginny Cummings 2019-2020 Annual Fund Faculty Chair
Annual Fund Chair Letters 2019-2020
Dear MBCA Friends,
As we reflect on the last year, it is humbling to see God’s protective hand over our school and families and His faithfulness to the ministry of Mt. Bethel Christian Academy. It was a privilege for our family to serve as your Annual Fund chairs
Mission Statement is to “provide a truly Christ-centered education for our children through an environment which develops and encourages academic excellence, spiritual growth, and a lifelong love and desire for learning.” Our teachers, administrators, and
Our amazing teachers went above and beyond to make sure our students were loved, challenged, and supported right through the very end of school.
as, together, we confirmed our commitment to raising our children in an environment where Christ is central in all we do.
The 2019-2020 school year was unprecedented. Who among us could have predicted the changes we would face as we met the challenges of COVID-19? Remember when we thought we would be back in school after two weeks? And then maybe after spring break? So much has changed, yet in many ways, nothing has.
Mt. Bethel Christian Academy’s
staff continued to show their love, commitment to this mission, and their flexibility as we all adjusted to life during a pandemic. We have a lot to be proud of in the way MBCA handled the shift to online learning! Our amazing teachers went above and beyond to make sure our students were loved, challenged, and supported right through the very end of school. Now, as we embark on this new school year, we are overwhelmed by the countless hours of prayer and preparation that have gone into opening our school
for in-person learning.
Many of you may know that our family enjoys sailing. Sailors cannot control the wind, but they can control the set of their sails. Regardless of the wind direction, by changing the set of the sails, a sailboat can make it safely to port. There are more favorable winds than others, but in all situations, with the right knowledge, preparation, and execution, your vessel will arrive where you intend to go. The same is true for our current environment. We do not have control over the situation our world is facing, but we do have the ability to choose how we react to it. We look forward to trimming our sails for another great school year.
We are honored to stand beside you in support of our sweet school. We are blessed to be in partnership with you, our fellow Academy families, to provide these students with the very best Christ-centered education possible.
Thank you for supporting the 20192020 Annual Fund!

Georgia GOAL Donors 2020
Every year, Mt. Bethel Christian Academy partners with Georgia GOAL, a Student Scholarship Organization (SSO) created through the Georgia Private School Tax Credit Program. GOAL provides qualified students with tuition assistance when Georgia taxpayers redirect their state income taxes to MBCA. Specifically, GOAL funding is allocated for deserving, public school students who are new to Mt. Bethel.
Thank you to the individuals listed below for bringing $279,950 in scholarship money to MBCA.
The GOAL program furthers MBCA’s ability to fulfill its Christian mission. Financial aid is of great importance to us, especially now as an increased number of families in our community seek assistance as a result of pandemicrelated circumstances, and these dollars are a critical component of the Academy’s life-changing tuitionassistance initiatives.

Director's Letter
The phrase All In spectacularly and accurately describes the 2019-2020 Annual Fund. We had no idea just how well the theme would align with our efforts when we launched the Annual Fund last fall, but it most certainly applied when we put the bow on the campaign this summer. The past twelve months comprise what is truly one of MBCA’s most defining years.
I’d like to thank Paige and Rustin Parsons for their leadership as Annual Fund chairs. If you know the Parsons, you’re lucky. If you know them well, you know they are the perfect embodiment of faith over fear, and as it turned out, that was exactly what we needed. I am so grateful, Paige and Rustin, for your devotion to Mt. Bethel and your willingness to press on during times of uncertainty.
Backing the Parsons was an incredible team of volunteers who worked tirelessly to help us reach 99% participation from Academy parents. We are so, so proud of this achievement!
The
support of our families is our biggest blessing.
Together, there is nothing we can’t do, and we demonstrated that beginning March 12, 2020, when the entire
Academy pivoted, successfully, to remote learning for the rest of the academic year.
Many thanks to Ginny Cummings for serving as our Faculty Chair. Ginny, your passion for your work and belief in your students is inspiring! We are lucky to have you, and I am grateful for your commitment to leading the world’s best faculty (undisputed!) to 100% participation in the 2019-2020 Annual Fund. Teachers, thank you for being All In! You are true heroes!
The MBCA family is at its best when we rally together and rise to a challenge. Your support, your prayers, and your belief in our mission gave us courage to move forward. Because of the generosity of the families listed on these pages, MBCA is stronger than it was 12 months ago. Right now, and in person, our students are being shaped into the kind of strong, wise, and empathetic leaders that make the world a better place.
When I look back at 2019-2020, I will remember how MBCA embraced remote learning and a worldwide shutdown, sought opportunity through adversity, and grew bolder. We worked together beautifully even when we were apart. We went All In
With gratitude,

Academy 10 Defining Moments
1
INNOVATION LABS
When MBCA’s doors opened for the first day of school in 2019, Middle School students were eager to glimpse the new Middle School Innovation Lab, made possible by funding from the 2019 Parent Council Spring Fling.
As a STEM-leading school, MBCA students are exposed daily to highlevel equipment and materials necessary to develop their passions for science, technology, engineering, and math.
The new lab features iMac computers and large monitors for 3D modeling, Adobe Creative Cloud, video editing, and computer science/coding. There is also a “Drone Zone” comprised of hoops and obstacles hanging from the ceiling through which students can maneuver drones.
Thanks to the generosity of one of our Academy families, we were able to open a similar state-of-the-art STEM Lab at our North Campus where our Upper School students can think critically, struggle productively, and learn in a hands-on, authentic way.
The new STEM Lab is outfitted with commercial-grade equipment and furnished spaces that enhance collaborative work as students explore, build, and create. The lab is equipped with the latest technology such as 3D printers and Glowforge laser printers.
These fantastic additions to our campuses will create exciting opportunities for our students for years to come.

EAGLE CHOIR AT BRAVES
On Wednesday, September 18, 2019, Mrs. Poe and the fourth and fifth-grade Eagle Choir, with some special sixth-grade guests, performed a perfect rendition of The Star-Spangled Banner before the start of the Braves game against the Philadelphia Phillies at SunTrust Park.
Mt. Bethel Christian Academy parents, students, teachers, and friends bought close to 300 tickets for the game and got plenty of love on the big screen inside the stadium.
Mrs. Poe said, “God was in this from beginning to end. It all began with sending in a DVD of last year’s choir singing The National Anthem. Then we had to wait to see if we would be accepted to sing, and we were!”
“The experience was AMAZING!”, said Mrs. Poe. “The choir worked really hard learning how to sing as a team and listen to one another. We rehearsed outside on our MBCA baseball field to get a feel for singing outdoors. I was able to meet with a staff person at the Braves for a tour and how we would walk onto the field. It really helped knowing what to expect beforehand.”
The Braves went on to clinch the NL East just a few days later, capping off an amazing season. MBCA is happy to have been a part of it!
Mrs. Poe praised, “God gets all the glory for how He orchestrated every detail, from the great weather, to parents getting students to the stadium safely and on time, to everyone being healthy and able to participate. What a special memory!”

VETERANS DAY CHAPEL
November 12, 2019, was a special day on the Main Campus. Not only did students contribute more than 200 packed shoeboxes for Operation Christmas Child, they also got to honor the veterans in our community with a special chapel program.
The Piedmont Chapter Color Guard of the Sons of the American Revolution, under the command of Mr. Rick Reese, attended to post the Colors at the start of the program, and Mrs. Poe's Eagle Choir sang the National Anthem. Mrs. Paula Nelson from the Daughters of the American Revolution shared opening remarks, then students enjoyed a Q&A with a panel of distinguished veterans. Two familiar faces served on the panel: Main Campus security officer, Roman Karp, and eighth-grade teacher, LtCol Jim Izen. Officer Roman and LtCol Izen graciously shared stories and insights from their service experiences, and it was a privilege to honor them in this way. A small reception for veterans was held in the Narthex immediately following the chapel program.
Mt. Bethel Christian Academy counts its service men and women at the very top of its blessings. To the veterans in our Academy family, we thank you for your support and your sacrifices to protect our freedoms. It was truly our pleasure to fellowship with you and to learn more about your experiences. God bless!

ATHLETICS SIGNING DAYS
The Class of 2020 has five student athletes continuing their athletic careers at the collegiate level. This amounts to more than 10 percent of
the class - a remarkable statistic.
Last fall, parents, teachers, coaches, students, teammates, alumni, and friends gathered at the Upper School to join Jordan Meka (basketball) and Michael Fuller (baseball) as they signed their national letters of intent. Congratulations, gentlemen! Georgia Tech and the University of Charleston have added two fine student athletes to their rosters.
In the spring, during the school’s period of remote learning, two additional senior athletes committed to collegiate programs, and there was no way the MBCA community would let that pass without a celebration.
Brooks Anderson will join the Bass Fishing team at Emmanuel College, and Bryan Sullivan will play soccer at Reinhardt University. Athletic Director Cal Boyd and Upper School Head Bob Montague planned an outdoor signing ceremony at the North campus, complete with cupcakes and a drive-by parade. We are excited to watch Brooks and Bryan soar!
After COVID-19 and school closures cut short the Eagles’ promising 2020 baseball season, senior Joshua Leerssen was thrilled when he had a late-breaking opportunity in July to continue his pitching career at Birmingham-Southern College. Leerssen ended his career at Mt. Bethel as the season record holder for stolen bases and lowest ERA. He also holds career records in hits, runs scored, stolen bases, quality at-bats, and strikeouts as a pitcher.
As with so many other situations in 2020, the willingness of our seniors to be positive, flexible, and openminded was key in their successes and the recognition they received from colleges and universities. It is with immense pride that the MBCA community supports these graduates as they realize their dreams of competing at the next level.
For two nights last December, MBCA’s Upper School production of ELF: The Musical transported its audience members straight to a laugh-filled winter wonderland. Performing for sold-out crowds at the Roswell Cultural Center, the student actors delivered a memorable take on Buddy the Elf’s adventures in New York City.
Mrs. Leazer and her cast prepared for months to make ELF: The Musical truly fantastic, and their efforts certainly paid off. ELF will go down in school history; the talented cast and crew belong on any Broadway stage!
Hats off to the Upper School drama program and Mrs. Leazer for bringing Christmas magic to MBCA.

EAGLES IN ALASKA
7 BAHAMAS
Following months of planning and fundraising, eighth-grade students and staff visited Nassau, Bahamas, last February for their annual mission trip. To say they were transformed would be an understatement. Together, they served the people of the Bahamas through improvement projects, VBS-style programming, food and goods distribution, school visits, and prayer. The group grew spiritually and relationally as they worked together to be the hands and feet of Christ.
“I felt joy constantly this week,” said Ava Michael ’24. “From helping out with the kids to worshipping with the people I’ve known all of my life, I felt joy.”
The Bahamas is home to the most vibrant, welcoming, and faithful community. The students learned so much and impacted so many. Bahamas, you forever have pieces of our hearts! 5
In December, the boys varsity basketball team traveled all the way to Wasilla, Alaska, to participate in the 2019 Doc Larson Roundball Classic. What an adventure! Players and coaches had to battle jet lag and cold weather to stage a huge comefrom-behind win in their first game. They came up a bit short - losing by one point - in game two, but brought home memories of a lifetime!
At home, MBCA families hosted #OperationEagleWatch viewing parties to watch the games via livestream. Because of the time difference between Alaska and Georgia, the viewing parties started at midnight!
home as the community shut down amid concerns over COVID-19. In true MBCA style, parents - and grandparents - stepped up in a big way and made the 2020 auction one of the most successful in Academy history! More than $90,000 was raised through the auction, which offered teacher outings and experiences, one-third of a black Angus cow, a Georgia Tech basketball experience with Coach Boyd and MBCA alumni players, an MBCA social media takeover, beach trips, and even a tiny cabin. The ever-popular wine and bourbon pulls sold out, and Parent Council representatives hand-delivered the bottles and other prizes to the winning households.
The Spring Fling is one of MBCA’s most treasured annual traditions. The event builds up our community and raises funds to help us maintain the levels of excellence our students and parents expect each day. Thank you to Megan Becker and Gigi Fischer for leading MBCA beautifully through the unexpected circumstances surrounding the 2020 Spring Fling!
VIRTUAL SPRING FLING
8 9
For twelve months, Parent Council’s Ways and Means committee planned for the 2020 Spring Fling and Auction: Argyles, Gophers, and Green Jackets. Parents bought tickets and thought of creative ways to dress in their “Bushwood best” to attend the event at the Atlanta Country Club on Saturday, March 21.
Erring on the side of caution, the Spring Fling shifted to a virtual event for parents to enjoy safely from
REMOTE LEARNING
As the saying goes, distance makes the heart grow fonder. We are amending that to suggest that distance also makes the mind grow more creative!
While full of challenges, distance learning brought out the very best in our students, teachers, and parents, as all worked together to make the new style of learning effective and engaging. An abundance of time
at home afforded parents priceless opportunities to carve out time for “specials” such as exploring the local outdoor art scene, proper table setting, baking, and driveway P.E.
Sidewalk chalk and basketball drills became regular learning tools, and pets received all the snuggling they could handle. Coach Boyd shared dance moves every Friday, and our varsity baseball team held “virtual bus rides” using Google Meet. It brought joy during a dark time to see MBCA families embrace this rare opportunity to be together at home for such an extended period. Thank you, MBCA parents, for your partnership in nourishing the hearts and minds of these precious children. The students are back, and they are better than ever!
EVERYBODY LOVES A PARADE
We are better together. The time apart during the Academy’s extended closure was equally tough on students and teachers, so every MBCA student received one or more driveway parades from their teachers during remote learning. While maintaining safe distances, teachers and students air hugged, waved, honked, and held up signs to show how much they loved and missed each other. MBCA faculty logged hundreds of miles to share in-person smiles with their beloved students and to deliver a special yard sign to each Academy family. Faculty and staff received yard sign deliveries from our exceptional Parent Council board. We are better together, but we grew even closer –and more appreciative of each other - while apart!

CLASS OF 2020
MBCA’s third, and largest, graduating class racked up some impressive achievements! One hundred percent of the 43 graduates were accepted to four-year colleges. The 54 colleges to which they were accepted spanned the country from Florida to Montana.
All of this, and a pandemic, too! The Class of 2020 will always bear the distinction of being the first class with an August graduation date, of having to forego their senior prom, and of attending their final MBCA classes virtually. We are proud of them. They weathered all of these disruptions with grace and positivity, which will no doubt serve them well as they move on to colleges, careers, and families. To the Class of 2020, you will always hold an extraspecial place in our hearts.
Congratulations to Grace Montague, Valedictorian, Lauren Schwartz, Salutatorian, and Beau Milam, Randy Mickler Award recipient.
