OUR ROOTS L

et’s Work, Let’s Play, Let’s Live Together

It all begin in Philadelphia in 1938, with a loving mother and a simple idea. Marion Stubbs Thomas approached a group of mothers with a vision for a new kind of club -- one focused not on the mothers themselves, but on stimulating social and cultural relationships among their children -- and instilling the values and leadership skills that would serve them well into adulthood. The concept was so inspiring it soon spread to other cities and states. In 1947, Jack and Jill of America was incorporated under the laws of the state of Delaware as a non-profit organization.

Today, Jack and Jill of America, is a nationwide organization with 262 chapters in seven geographic regions encompassing 39 states and the District of Columbia. Membership has grown from 20 visionary and loving mothers to over 17,000 mothers and associates, and more than 70,000 family members.

13 • 85 TH ANNIVERSARY EXPERIENCE FIRST PLACE WINNER MID-WESTERN REGION Ann Arbor Chapter “STEM-inista” Cultural The best of the best educational programming is engaging, creative, memorable, accessible, and makes seemingly difficult material approachable and fun. The 2021-2022 October activity for the Group 3 children of Ann Arbor Chapter featured author Micheal Anderson, a Jack and Jill St. Louis Chapter Associate who has written a children's book, Zoey London's Big Move to the Lou. Prior to the event, “Edible DNA and an Author Talk with African American Writer Micheal Anderson,” activity bags were delivered with a copy of the book, supplies, and instructions for hands-on science activity. Children and parents read the book together in the weeks leading up to the activity. On the day of the event, Jack and Jill children in grades 3 through 5 joined a live author talk with Michael Anderson, who shared her perspective as Jack and Jill mom of two accomplished “STEM-inista” young women in science. Ms. Anderson shared the inspiration behind her writing -- that young Black girls and boys could see themselves represented in chapter books. The children engaged with the author through thoughtful questions about her process, her motivation, and several of the characters in the book. They learned about the writing process, editing, workshopping, and researching. Through the author talk and Q&A, children practiced principles from Leadership Modules 9 and 10: Communications, Listening, and Public Speaking. CLICK FOR VIDEO FIRST PLACE WINNER MID-ATLANTIC REGION FIRST PLACE: Capital City Chapter Black Farmers Cultural The Capital City Teen Trailblazers rolled up their sleeves at First Fruits a Black owed Farm in Louisburg, NC. First Fruits Farm was founded by former NFL lineman Jason Brown to share the love of Christ and aid in hunger relief in eastern North Carolina. Jason was the highest-paid center in NFL history, but he walked away from a 35-million-dollar contract with the St Louis Rams to pursue a call that he felt from God to become a farmer. Our teens rolled up their sleeves and took a journey to learn firsthand about the history and present-day of African American farming in North Carolina and how everyone can support efforts to save Black farmland. They learned how to farm from seeding to harvesting through bringing produce to the market. Our teens learned more about the importance of sustainability for black farmers. Resources and partnerships that are needed and advocacy that they could provide and promote for this cause. The Capital City teens left this journey knowing that their work had just begun, but they were now armed with tools to support our Black Farmers. FIRST PLACE WINNER EASTERN REGION FIRST PLACE: South Jersey “Morgan Village School (MLK Day)” Civic/Legislative On January 17, 2022, our children, mothers, and fathers of the South Jersey Chapter of Jack and Jill of America came together at the Morgan Village Middle School for a day of community service. We were joined by teachers of the Morgan Village School and community members. Together we made ten plastic cots for the homeless utilizing plastic grocery bags. That may not seem a lot until you realize it takes 300 folded bags, cut into very specific dimensions to make just one cot. The plastic cots can be rolled up, making it much easier to transport and provide an added barrier layer of protection from the brutal cold surfaces of the street. Also, with plastic bags being a major contributor to pollution, this community service project helped to decrease waste and is deemed a true humanitarian public service at its best. The SJC children partner with local botanists to continue planting and maintaining an indoor garden for the Morgan Village Middle School. This indoor garden led the school to develop a garden club which helps the chapter with maintaining the garden. Our Southern Jersey and Morgan Village schoolchildren learned about gardening techniques and will harvest the garden in a few short weeks. This garden is the gift that keeps on giving! The Morgan Village students will have fresh vegetables to take home, and they will continue to learn about healthy eating and food sustainability. The Morgan Village staff dreamt of place where differently able students would have place to retreat when overwhelmed or to gather themselves. Our chapter cleaned out an unused room, moved in comfortable seating, beautiful lights, handmade pillows, built cozy isolation tents, and constructed “calming kits” full of items students might need. The school was delighted with this addition, and we will continue to make enhancements throughout the rest of the school year. Our South Jersey Teens constructed an enormous wall mural calendar with Black History Month icons behind each day of the month to educate and inspire the students. Each day, a middle schooler would be selected to read from the mural and share information on the Black History Icon of the day with the students over the school’s PA system. As this was going on, various media outlets stopped in to interview South Jersey about our various community projects that we participate in over the course of the year. Morgan Village school is just one of our community partners. CLICK THUMBNAILS FOR MORE DETAILS ON OUR CHAPTERS IN ACTION! ON MISSION ON PURPOSE SEE HOW WE REMAIN

INTRODUCING THE JACK AND JILL FOUNDATION

Jack and Jill of America Foundation was established in 1968 as the philanthropic arm of Jack and Jill of America, Incorporated to improve the lives of children, especially those in disadvantaged and underserved areas. Local Jack and Jill chapters execute the Foundation’s mission and are led by members who instill philanthropy and leadership ideals in their children. A large part of what the Foundation does is fund carefully-selected local organizations that can make the greatest impact on African American children and families.

MISSION

Our mission is to address issues affecting African American children and families, by investing in programs and services that create a strong foundation for children to thrive long-term.

Our vision is to transform African American communities, one child at a time.

JACK AND JILL OF AMERICA, INCORPORATED SPONSORSHIP PACKAGE 15 • 85 TH ANNIVERSARY EXPERIENCE
VISION

There’s a real need in African American communities for a concentrated focus on root cause issues affecting long-term outcomes for African American children. We are committed to supporting services, programs and organizations that address underlying causes of social problems affecting African American communities, families and ultimately children.

During the pandemic Jack and Jill Foundation raised over 3 million dollars to support nonprofits in local communities. Providing access to vital educational programs to children from underprivileged communities would not be possible without donations. Among the uses of the money raised are: $10,000 to help kids in southeast DC study archaeology and $600,000 was provided in college grants to help 1,000 students stay in school.

CAROLE ROBERTSON DAY

September 15, 2023

Carole Robertson, one of the four little girls tragically killed in the Birmingham bombing was a member of  the Birmingham, Alabama chapter of Jack and Jill of America, Inc...She was involved in many activities in her school and her community. At the time of her death, she was working with other students, across the city, on a project that was promoting unity and improved race relations in Birmingham.

The death of innocence was so profound for all Jack and Jill families across the nation that at our National Convention in 1964, it was decided to have a national day of recognition for the accomplishments and service that she was not able to fulfill herself. This commemorative day is carried on to the present, in every chapter, as a cornerstone opening up each new program year. Children participate in a service project and generally a chapter family outing.

To honor her legacy, and this day in the history of Jack and Jill of America, Inc. we will be planning a special 85 anniversary Carole Robertson day of observance, which will also fall on the 60th anniversary of the bombing.
